I found out there was one in the area, located at Reno's Music. I had never heard of this establishment before but I saw on their website that they have a lot of Martin guitars in their inventory. So when my husband and I were in the general neighborhood, we decided to stop in and have a look. This turned out to be a really bad idea. I have been playing guitar for 55 years and my husband also for nearly as long. My father was an Indianapolis jazz guitarist who will be inducted into the Indianapolis Jazz Hall Of Fame in 2026. I have been visiting guitar stores since I was a little girl, and never have I been treated so rudely EVER. There was one guy working there, and zero customers. Most guitar shops are lively, upbeat places filled with music but this was basically an office with a storeroom of what looked to be a zillion boxed-up guitars. I asked this person if he had a D-17 because I was interested in playing one. He launched into this gatekeeper routine that would have made my father laugh with scorn and then turn around and head straight out the door. This guy said, "First we're going to have a little conversation". What??? I thought this was a business and I just wanted to see a guitar! He wanted to know our names. I thought wtf? Our names won't mean anything to you? But I gave them, first and last, and then he replied that his name was Mark. Okay fine, whatever. Do you play? he wanted to know. Okay, why would I even be in a place like that if I didn't play? I was playing before this guy was even thought of! Well, after I replied yes, we both do, he condescended to let me try the guitar. It was a very nice guitar but I had already made up my mind that I would not be buying a $1 kazoo off this guy. I played one more guitar there and we left. Needless to say, I will take my money and my business elsewhere. I am still in the market for a high-end Martin but thankfully there are many other guitar stores in the Indianapolis area that are far more welcoming and treat their customers like they want their business - NOT like they are doing them some kind of a favor just letting them in the door. I've seen other reviews left by people who had much the same experience with Reno's Music, so it wasn't just us, it's how this place is, unfortunately.

Mark is a great dude who is genuine and makes a real connection with folks. We nerd out on guitars and fiddle tunes and whatnot, and there's never any pressure, but he's also been attentive to what I've been searching for as a player. When the CEO-7's first came out and couldn't be found, he gave me a buzz and said "This one has something, no rush, I'll keep it in the back until you get a chance to swing by." It's the only time he's ever called direct on a specific guitar and I'm so glad he did. It's still my #1 acoustic. Cut to a few years later and I was wanting to buy a custom Martin changing the specs of an existing model. Mark got me around 10 quotes across 3 years as I considered what I wanted to do before I was ready to pull the trigger. Never any pressure, always just "That sounds awesome, let's see what they say!" I bought that guitar, then it was delayed at the start of the Pandemic. Mark stayed in touch with updates and when it finally arrived, had me in safely to the shop on my own as we had a 4 week old daughter on top of it all. Years later as that guitar needed a neck reset from the Factory, Mark helped me get all of the planning set to drop it off as I passed through PA. Cut to a few years later and as I finished my PhD in music technology I wanted to finally get a 12-fret Martin. Again, several months of another 7-10 quotes before I was ready to pick the right one. As he was on a trip to the factory per my request he sent me photos of Wild Grain Indian Rosewood and Swiss Spruce options. Ordered and waited. When the guitar arrived, we pulled it out of the box and the lightest picking was beautiful...but if I dug in things weren't right. Mark got out the straight-edge and we found that the neck was underset. I don't view this as any reflection on Mark or Martin really, just a dumb luck thing to have happen twice. He let me make decisions about the next steps to take, but did all of the work for contacting the factory and navigated all the steps necessary of having the replacement parts selected and built. On top of all of that, he takes the best pictures, runs a great website, and is the first place I would send anyone within 300 miles that was looking for a new Martin (and other acoustics as well). My 2 custom orders are not at the high end of the range, they're really just small changes to existing platforms, but Mark has always treated me with great respect and kindness. With the Eastman and Bourgeois options in the store, I'd say that for anyone looking for their first great acoustic, their ultimate, or anything in between, this is the place. I couldn't tell you how many guitars I've played in the shop, but I'd guess I'm getting close to 100. I remember a few I should have bought, but mostly I think about the good times just hanging out, marveling at these wonderful instruments that bring so much joy to our lives. I'm extremely grateful to have a place like Reno's that I know on any given afternoon I could swing by, see and play something really cool, and have a great chat.

The truth is that I'm a fan of Yankee Candle and I visit this particular location on a fairly regular basis when killing time before a movie - this means at least once a week. I've yet to find a candle that works for me as well as Yankee Candles do. I feel the same way about most of their secondary products like air fresheners (home, car), etc. Yes, they're more expensive. They're also very good. So, if I were to rate Yankee Candle solely on the basis of their product I would most likely be looking at a 5-star rating. LOVE their products. Here's the thing. I really, really, really hate shopping at Yankee Candle. While I've always found their sales approach a tad over-the-top, over the last few months it has almost gotten to the point that there are times I simply don't go in because I don't want to deal with it. Seriously. Here's the experience I have had almost every single time over the past few months at Castleton, including last night. I go in. I check out their specials and check out a few tables. I don't begrudge them the fact that within a couple minutes, someone is going to swoop in and offer service. That's fine. I'll typically decline unless there's a specific need. Yankee Candle has a challenging layout for strollers, wheelchairs and pretty much anyone with a big butt. While I've not broken anything in Yankee Candle, it's taken a conscious effort every single time I'm in there and I've sure had some close calls and have tipped over smaller items before. I realize inventory is important, especially in a high profile location like Castleton, but it would be nice to have some room to get around. A few months ago, they really began pushing their e-mail advertising and their rewards club. How do I know this? They push it every single time. When you buy at Yankee Candle, you're not just committing to the sale but committing to the journey toward the sale. Seriously. "Do you want a wick trimmer?" "No, thank you." "Five minute lecture on why wick trimmers are awesome" while they casually roll your candle up in tissue paper, a courtesy that these days feels more like a sales ploy. "Can I get your phone number?" "Phone number given." "Can I get your e-mail?" Silently thinking "You can't look it up by phone number? This is 2016, after all." I've asked. They apparently hired an IOT department straight out of their local community college (Sorry to all you community college grads - no slam on you intended). If you decline an e-mail, you get a five-minute lecture on why their e-mails are awesome. Because, after all, EVERYTHING is awesome. "Are you a member of our rewards club?" "I have no idea. You've lectured me into a drunken stupor now." I'm sitting here thinking "Why didn't I go to White Barn? They actually sell you candles without the lecture." "Three minute lecture on why the rewards club is awesome - $5 gift card after $100 spent. For the record, that's not awesome and it's not worth the amount of my time you kill with every sale. If you're lucky, your products, even if you only have one, will be ready to go by the time they get through all the lectures. If not, you get another lecture on an upcoming sale or changing products. EVERY single time. I mean, heck, last night they even acknowledged that I was a regular but felt the need to give me every single lecture. There are now times I don't go in simply because I don't have the time to commit to the entire journey. OH sure, I could probably be rude and cut them all off (and have). I've also simply left if it got overbearing (Do you hear that Yankee Candle? You've lost sales because of this current dreadful sales approach). The painful conclusion, at least for me, is that I love Yankee Candle products but hate the experience of shopping there. While I've been hesitant to switch over to shopping online, it may prove to be the best option because Yankee Candle, at least this location, crosses the line from good customer service into the realm of almost stalkerish tendencies with a hard-sell approach that betrays the very essence of what folks like about Yankee Candle.

I went in previously to check it out and it seemed OK and appeared to have a huge inventory. When I went in again recently to look at a few things including a nice Zippo lighter, I decided to buy it. I also got a few more items. When I got home and looked at the receipt, the only thing that was listed clearly was the lighter. All of the other items were not itemized and it was thrown together in a lump sum. I called them and questioned it because I felt like I was over charged. I also asked if I could return the lighter because I didn't want it. It was not used and still in the box. The guy on the phone said they have a no refund / return policy. He said it was on the receipt. I told him it was absolutely not stated on the receipt. I didn't see any signage stating that as well in the store. I understand consumable products might be logically subject to a no refund policy, but not the lighter. At that point I knew I was dealing with a sketchy business. Before the call ended he was obnoxious and called me - Karen. I called the other location to talk to the owner and I ended up talking to a clueless woman who didn't speak English. It's all beyond weird, pathetic and unprofessional. Let the Karma fairy deal with it.
