What an awesome sporting store and bike rental shop. The owners were super cool and we had a great time renting bikes from here. One of the first things that impressed us about this store is its size. Besides the truckloads of bikes on display they offer many other sporting goods equipment such as fishing and even footwear. Once we found the bike rental part of the store we were immediately given help. There were a few bike maps for country trails around the area, many of them we found out were 40+ mile long too long and strenuous for our skill levels. In truth we only had vague ideas of what we wanted to do (turns out biking "around" Lake Placid doesn't mean biking "a round trail" around Lake Placid.) However High Peaks Cyclery had us covered and recommended we take the River Road loop! This was an awesome trail that didn't go too far out of town but still had wonderful views of Mt.Marcy, rivers, etc, etc. It was a great recommendation. Besides the great biking advice High River Cycling rents out very high quality bikes. Honestly these might be the best bikes I have ever rented around the world but I guess you should expect higher standards when biking country roads. We were very impressed by them. Overall High River Cyclery was a fantastic place to rent bikes from and I hope they continue to do well during the the COVID-19 affair. read more

Rented bikes from here in the past and these guys run a first class operation. They really try to serve their customers and be as accommodating as possible. They are able to rent high-tech $3,000 bicycles to customers and they have older ones as well. Rentals range from $35-55/day to $100/day depending on the bike you want. I've rented from them in the past when the roads were closed during the half ironman and I needed to transport myself to the start of a trail. Grateful they are around and hope they stay around and continue to be in business after COVID-19. read more

First time in the "Daks" and wanted desperately to jump on a mountain bike and hit some trails. I called the shop and talked to Matt.. what a nice guy! So welcoming . He told us to come over. We got there and was immediately helped by Derek who, after learning what we were after, took us back where the masters were busy setting up some bikes. After a brief wait, they brought out these amazing bikes , took some time to direct us to some great spots, and off we went. Trails were sweet. Bikes were ......oh yeah! The staff here were amazing. I came here twice because I had to buy some cold weather gear because I didnt realize how cold it gets in the mornings here at lake placid. The second time I came to get air for my bike. I told the staff that I would be climbing whiteface and they even checked my brakes to make sure it was good to go for the long downhill. Walked in to buy some snacks for my bike ride and to see if I can get some local tips on the route I was planning on doing. I was from out of town and was looking for info on road quality for cycling as well as climbing at the dacks. Clearly they knew what to suggest and even took time to modify my cycling route to fit my needs. Loved that people that work here care about and are actively involved in the sports, not just working at the shop to just to work. They were stocked w all the energy snacks I needed for the ride and seem to have a wide variety of gear for those that come for not just bikes but also apparel, cleats, winter gear. They also had some good sale items. Cannot say much about the repair shop since I didn't get to use them but they do repair bikes from the looks of it. Good experience and will definitely come back next time I visit the area! read more

Rented a couple of road bikes here this weekend. The guys at the shop were cool guys and definitely focused on sending us out on a good ride. . They looked at the ride we had planned and talked us into what was clearly a better option, highlighting recommendations on a map etc. Looking at the website we were a little unclear what bikes they'd have for rental. We were pleasantly surprised - I had a Giant Contender SL and my buddy something similar. For short money, we were still able to get in a good ride without lugging our bikes on the trip in a crowded car. read more

Great local mountain shop. The name "Cyclery" doesn't really do justice to all the categories this shop carries. Went in here in late Winter, they still had a good selection of backcountry and cross-country ski gear, maps/books, Patagonia apparel, running and bike stuff. They also had a small-ish camping assortment. But if you are looking for a place to gear up for a week-long backcountry trip, I might recommend hitting the Mountaineer in Keene Valley instead. We spent a lot of time chatting with Bob, who was really helpful with advice on where to go, where not to go, for a backcountry tour. In addition to rental and repair shop, they also have a consignment area in the back of the shop -- full of clothes, skis, and other gear. One other thing about the prices in this shop -- a lot of these shops have a small window to sell things at full price... if you don't want to pay full price, wait until the end of the season. High Peaks had some great deals when I was in there last week. read more

The best business in the entire town. The Delaney family raises studs. The shop is very knowledgeable with everything they carry. He gave me a road bike when I was kid and it has been the only road bike I've ever ridin. Still rides perfectooo. I have many miles on my ride. Terrible experience. The owner and right-hand man are unhelpful but love to hear themselves speak. Didn't offer a single helpful hint or trail for tourists completely unfamiliar with the city. These folks were very helpful and provided exactly what I needed for a nice morning ride through the Adirondacks! I thought the price was very reasonable and, since I was from out of town and brought none of my own gear, they hooked me up with a helmet and water bottle at no extra charge. They also pointed me in the right direction. The road bike I rented was solid and well-tuned. I wasn't expecting such a nice bike for a rental. I will use them again when I return to the area. My fiancé and I travelled to Lake Placid to get away and find some adventure. We aren't familiar with the area and hadn't done anything outdoors in the Adirondacks, so we thought it would be a good idea to link up with a guide shop. We definitely picked the right one. The pros in this shop are best in class. I have spent time in many dozens of guide shops in big mountains out West in the Rockies and Western Canada, and High Peaks hangs with the very best of them from the standpoint of knowledge and expertise. There is one thing you get at this shop though which I have never received at any other gear/guide shop I've ever been to though which is 5 star hotel level concierge service. When I first reached out over the phone, the guides were all booked up for our weekend. Zack took my cell and worked tirelessly to find someone who could show us through the backcountry. He ended up connecting us with a great guide, but unfortunately the guide's wife got sick the day before our trip and he was forced to self-quarantine. We were all bummed, but the shop did totally right by us! Matt, cannot say enough about this guy he is a total superstar, called us and provided us some options. We decided to do a simpler overnight hike unguided. To get us off on the right foot, Matt opened the shop at 7AM the next morning (two hours early), and reviewed and outfitted us with gear, covered safe travel practices, built us an itinerary, provided us a number of super important and helpful pro tips, and gave us his cell phone number in case anything came up down the road - all free of charge. The shop allowed us to put the money we had spent to reserve the guide toward the purchase of new gear, and we got some really great stuff. Super positive experience, great team for anyone seeking gear or guidance in the high peaks! read more

Rented bikes for a half day from High Peaks last week. 20 minutes into the ride it started raining and didn't let up. Returned the biked an hour later and they agreed to let us come back the next day and take the bikes out again if the rain let up. Returned the next day and didnt have any issue taking the bikes out again for a half day. This was before peak season, mid-week, in crummy weather so I wouldn't expect this flexibility all the time, but it was a nice gesture and it sure gave us a good customer experience. Staff was friendly too and they had some good bike ride recommendations. read more

Not only did he help her pick the correct bike, he took the time to properly fit the bike to her. He set her up riding her new bike, mounted on a stationary mount, attached to a computer. Rented bikes for 1/2 day at their location near the Olympic XC trails - Mt Van H or something. Bikes were disappointing quality (compared to the ones we rented at the Placid Planet Bikes). Trails were extensive but trail maps were cheap and hard to read. read more

Rude and impatient guide! We had booked Intro ice climbing session for half a day..When I made the appointment I has stressed on the point that we are beginners and have never climbed ice before..On the day of climbing, our guide had some suggestions on layering which we gladly accepted. We also practiced putting on the crampons in the rental shop but it was harder out there on the actual ice..so we were struggling with the crampons and that's when the guide started losing his patience..he did help us but not before making his displeasure very obvious..My point was, being a newbie I was totally fine getting less of an actual climbing in,we were just out to have fun and do a new thing! But guess our guide didn't agree with that..When practicing the climbing techniques on the ice, he again started losing his patience and said how he was wasting his energy teaching us!! That statement was very rude and totally uncalled for..the climbing part was fun but we left with a bad taste in the mouth overall.. I wouldn't recommend going with them if you are a total beginner..and I recommend that their website shouldn't say 'no experience needed' either!! read more

I was driving thru Lake Placid, thinking about my first adirondack bike ride, and realized that my bike was geared for flat land - south florida. I called high peaks and asked if they could swap a cassette on both my bike and my wife's. They said bring them in, which i did in about 5 minutes. They put a larger tooth cassette on mine, checked the chain which was worn, replaced that and confirmed shifting and a few minor adjustments. My wife's bike is an older setup and uses the 9 gear cassette, and would have gained only 3 teeth on the large ring, they recommended to stay with what we had, and cleaned up the existing cassette. All done in about 30 minuets. Highly recommend high Peaks, excellent quality work, fast, reasonably priced. read more
