The day before a 15 mile hike in negative temperatures, we stopped here to rent snow shoes and pick up a little bit of gear. The employees were very helpful. Snow shoe rental was $15/day and if you drop it off the following day with store open, they only charged us for one day which was great. I also picked up some socks and gloves here. The sock selection is great for winter-y sports sort of stuff and I got some liners as well as hefty mountaineering socks. The mountaineering socks were priced at a premium for $29 for one pair, but they have a lifetime guarantee and I haven't regretted buying them. I've used them outside the hike numerous times during the blustery Buffalo weather where I'm from. I also bought a pair of mittens and man the mittens here were very expensive! The cheapest pair I could find was $89, but they are indeed very warm and hopefully will last me for a very long time with many outdoor winter adventures to be had in said mittens. All in all, the staff at the store was great and honest and didn't try to upsell us on anything we may not need. I'd definitely recommend stopping into the Mountaineer -- some knowledgable staff and great equipment! They also rent hiking boots and crampons! read more

I love a good outdoor gear store--like a grocery store, it's therapeutic and full of the "yes I'd like to buy one of everything" vibes. The Mountaineer is a wonderful gem and a must-visit for any outdoor lover visiting the area. We popped in to rent snowshoes (a very competitive $15/day for MSRs) and lingered long enough to buy a few other gear items too. (One of the few places to actually sell Hyperlite... OMG!) The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about all the hikes in the immediate vicinity. You don't just buy gear at The Mountaineer, but you also get the knowledge you need to use the gear safely and smartly in the ADKs. read more

Super nice and helpful staff! They had a great selection! I really enjoyed visiting this store, they had stuff that was very very affordable, and as you would expect for hiking gear stuff that was more expensive. They had a wide selection and stuff you wouldn't find at REI, or EMS, so I was pleasantly surprised. The staff helped fit a hiking backpack me and my husband could share. So we were really happy! I even found super cute headwear by Skida, a brand I had never heard of before, it's made in Vermont. It's such a pretty print. We got an Osprey backpack, which I am excited about to take pressure off my back while hiking! Awesome selection, they had mountain climbing shoes, hiking shoes, fishing gear. I was in the store did not see a sign about return policy of a micro spikes as the displays are full of gear. first off the prices are way higher than the manufacturer prices, 2nd I live 4.5 hrs away from this store. I tried one side crampon in store on carpet. it was a gift for my brother and found out his foot is way larger than mine. I was in the store in less than 12 hours and called to get a refund. This is poor customer service if a package and product is not used and paid an over manufacturing pricing is clearly robbery of clients. watch out for your wallets in this place. Owner didn't want to take care of a new customer that was referred to his store. I will never return and had planned to after I had left. Wow don't let the high end mentality fool you. Sad attitude towards customers on making special exceptions for returns. Wow.... And see how they play the victim in customers supposedly scamming them. Check out manufacturer current prices prior to buying. micro spikes are not considered climbing gear to the manufacturer if you call them. Seems like the altitude or lack of customer service aka fleecing is the way here. read more

This place is incredible! They have nearly everything you could ever need to spend the days outdoors. My wife and I stop almost every time we go hiking in the ADKs even if it's just to look at all the gear. If you're a gear nut, this place is for you. If you forgot ANYTHING for your camping trip, they've got it. If you just want to ask advice about the area, they'll give you more options than you asked for. Went there over the weekend to rent crampons, technical ice axes, and mountaineering boots. You would expect them to have much higher prices then other stores like EMS since they are the only store in the area. That is definatley not the case. Their prices are equal if not lower then EMS and there staff was extremely helpful and knowledgable. They even gave us advice on climbing the Trap Dyke which is why we were in the Daks. All the usual anmes you know such as North Face, Outdoor Research, and Mountain Hardwear. Defiantley a cool store with a ton of character. read more

We were visiting the Keene and Lake Placid areas of New York and wanted to do a little hiking and swimming. Since we weren't familiar with this area, a local woman strongly suggested we visit the Mountaineer for their assistance in locating certain sites and to see what they had to offer. She assured us that they would be extremely helpful. Unfortunately, The experience we had was quite the opposite. The young, blonde woman behind the counter not only delayed answering our questions but finally stated to us that she didn't think anyone but the local people should visit these sites. She was not only unfriendly, she was downright rude. Since I hadn't yet had a chance to walk around the store, I asked her if she would answer our questions if I purchased an item. She remained aloof to the point of indifference. This encounter really soured my "Adirondack Experience". After spending several thousand dollars to spend a week in Lake Placid, I wouldn't recommend spending even one penny at this store. read more

We loved this store. Hi3 of our party of 10 had unbelievably left their hiking shoes home. We were staying at the wonderful keene valley lodge and laurie Daniel's suggested we try the mountaineer. About a 3 minute walk from the lodge. Each one of us was fitted perfectly. I am the least hiking person. Mainly because I hate snakes, but anyway a few sizes were tried and the la sportiva shoes I chose with their expert help I refer to as my slippers. They are that comfortable, but even though I with assistance climbed mt Jo with no problem, the comfort was fantastic. I love this store. read more

Very unprofessional! I ordered a pair of boots online, I was so happy about these boots. They took the order and processed it. Then several hours later they e-mail me back a say they do not have the item in stock. The girl on the phone was incredibly rude. I will never shop here again literally based on spite. I hope the girl who was working the online department phone at 5pm on 10/13/15 gets reprimanded. NO WAY TO TREAT A CUSTOMER!!!! She said that someone came in and bought the boots...after I HAD ALREADY BOUGHT THEM!!!! I think i know what happened, I made my purchase and before they pulled them from stock someone else came in. They need to have a system here this does not happen, any store who respected their customers would already have it in place. read more

I went last week to buy a pair of hiking boots. Chuck, the sales guy, listen to what experience I have and hope to have and chose three boots for me to check out. He was super patient and didn't let me think twice about the shoe if I thought the heel was slipping, toe hitting, etc. I was really surprised when I wanted to try on a shoe that was twice the price and he said that it was more shoe than what I would really use. What salesman wouldn't jump on the opportunity to sell a more expensive shoe? Also, he reminded me of the reasons why he picked the three boots for me to try and helped me not get distracted by all the other awesome shoes I wanted to try on. We finally figured out which shoe would be best for me, but I needed a smaller size that they didn't have. He said that they could order it for me, and I told them to send it to my house (I live two hours south of Keene), but he said that he would rather me come back in and try the different size on just to make sure that it was right. Again, what salesman would let someone walk out of the store without purchasing anything? I was so impressed. Needless to say, the boots are in and I will be back up next week to get my shoes. (And to pay the parking ticket I got in Lake Placid while looking for boots there = / None of the other stores compared to The Mountaineer). read more
