Breakfast is good, the rest of the meals need updating. There dinner salads are not very good. The water and ice in drinks taste bad. Maybe it the towns water. They should look into filtering it. We had stopped here 2 years ago and again today. Had forgotten how good it was. I had "The Cruz" which is grilled sourdough bread with turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, green chili, mayo. My husband had a Denver omelet and hash browns. Both meals were super delicious!!!! Great ice tea too. Delicious desserts, but we were too full even for the giant cinnamon rolls. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They worked together as a team-a good asset to any business. The restaurant was very clean and smelled clean. Restrooms very clean as well. Worth the drive from Denver. The food was AMAZING!! Took the entire family, and everyone was over the moon pleased with our experience here. Some ordered skirt steaks, they were SO tender and juicy; mashed potatoes seemed like REAL mashed potatoes, not from a box. Also had the meatloaf which was fantastic and bursting with flavor. The breakfast burrito was ordered to, and they managed to eat the entire huge burrito because it was so delicious. We each got a different desert slice; lemon meringue pie, pecan pie, chocolate cream pie, cherry pie, chocolate brownie, and vanilla ice cream all made in house and phenomenal! Some of the best desserts we have ever had!! The waitress was very sweet, and extremely helpful when we had allergy and dietary concerns. The atmosphere and motif are casual country. The perfect little whole in the wall smashed between Family Dollar and an auto parts store. Only complaints, though not worth taking away any stars, is nutrition and ingredient info should be available on the menu with their food/drink items. Going out to breakfast is one of my favorite things to do, so I'm pretty picky about it not gonna lie. Somehow found myself in Bennett, CO and found High Plain's Diner and no joke, it's the best breakfast I've ever had. Everything was perfect, service was incredible. Those ladies know what they are doing (shoutout my girl Sandy). Sandy guaranteed that they had the best pancakes ever, and she was not wrong. Best pancakes I've ever had that I had to drive all the way out there to take my parents from out of town to show them. So good, guys. Best find here in CO so far. read more

Their service has really gone down hill. Went there last week and stood there for at least five minutes while no one acknowledged us. I understand being busy/under staffed but the least they could have done was say something to us. We noticed six empty dirty tables and no one was cleaning them. And once we we were seated there was no apology for the wait. Our waitress was polite and helpful. However our food was cold and the eggs tasted rubbery. We typically love coming here. And hope that once the Cracker Barrel comes it won't affect their business. But if we continue to get that type of service, it will affect whether we go there or not. read more

Been here many times. Food quality has been an issue. Not bad but never order their side of beans. Canned and not even mixed and was not edible. They are ok but this review is for charges. And for the time I got sick off their green chili they make yet keep all day long... and my bf just got sick and so did I again. Salty salty salty. They are expensive. Texas Roadhouse you get sides. Not a side. I asked for a root bear and she didn't say it's a 3plus bucks and no refills in a bottle. Really!!! Met someone who used to work there and they said canned and cafeteria type food. I'm just tired of your prices and quality and over salting of food. Breakfast is all you got. Ha and they don't even bring sour cream for their tacos and such. Another table was like what? I've been going to this place for years. Once upon a time it was like a little secret, great food off the beaten track. In the past half year there's been a big decline. On Friday or Saturday nights the big draw was the prime rib. Not that long ago there would be a line at 6 PM. Not anymore. Prime time on prime rib night tonight and the place was less than 1/3 full. I ordered mine, "medium, a little less pink." I was about a third of the way through my salad when my waitress Sara brought my prime rib. Except this wasn't a prime rib. It was a pan cooked steak. And looked very well done - as in - really overcooked. Sara didn't seem to mind. She said "that's the way we do it." I ate less than half. It was tough, gristly and the juice and flavor cooked out of it. Again, Sara didn't mind, she scooped up my plate as fast as she had brought it and sweetly asked if I wanted any of their famous desserts. What?? Sara just didn't get it. The service and the food had reached the "this really sucks" level, yet Sara was clueless. Dessert? Are you kidding? I said no, Sara immediately presented my check, in her hand hidden behind her back, it was about 27 bucks. I handed her two twenties and she didn't even blink. Sara snapped her gum, "Do you want change?" What would that be, about a 40% (plus or minus) tip? Isn't EXCELLENT food AND service *BOTH* about 25%? This was neither. Sara didn't seem to mind. As I might have said before, Sara didn't get it. Yes, Sara, I want my change. Sara got 20% because someone here has to be graceful but that's the ONLY reason. 40%? Really? For this trashcan excuse of a meal? So, Sara, for the "clueless" you and your equally 'talent challenged' restaurant, an observation; once, long ago, you were great but now it seems you've fallen. And fallen far. I've wasted my money here for the last time. Bye bye. Good luck with that obviously falling clientele thing. Did you ever wonder why the numbers fall? And back to - did I "want change?" Are you friggin' kidding me? WTF was that all about?? That's why we have to say bye bye. But all is not lost, Sara, for you and your fellow professional chefs and servers! Just up the road is a place, where, on your next job, you say after every sentence, "Do you want fries with that?" We have been long time customers. Generally eating there 3 to 4 times a week. We are local farmers so the time of day which we frequently went in is different. Keep in mind we are sometimes cover in grease or mud. We always tip 20 to 25%. Recently our last FEW times have been less then satisfactory. Horrible horrible service, boarder line rude. Tried to call the owner or manger and they never bothered to return the call. Guess it is time to try another local restaurant in Watkins or Strasburg. The food is okay nothing to brag about and the service usually okay. The restaurant hasn't changed up the menu in years and could use some new selections. Lately, the staff is not as professional as other restaurants, so much chatting and not about food orders amongst the waitresses. Just not an enjoyable experience of late. There are not many sit down restaurants between Byers and Watkins along the I 70 corridor and I sure hope High Plains Diner makes some improvements or we could really use some good sit down restaurants to move out east of Denver soon. read more

There was only one waitress in the place that could not handle the demand, answering the phone while taking our order after we waited 20 minutes with 2 ice waters. They serve tap water that has a huge chemical flavor.... it took an hour and a half to get our crappy order and get out the door - I could taste the chemicals in the water in my tea that was lukewarm that they forgot to bring me that cost $3.49 and I had ordered green chili for breakfast since I can't eat dairy - but it came with a thick layer of cheese- no mention of that on the menu so I could not ask them to hold it - and it tasted like it was out of a can. This used to be a great restaurant but since covid, they have clearly reduced their food quality to save money and they aren't hiring enough help - we won't go back. read more

For small town Eastern Colorado you wouldn't have high hopes out of a diner. This one is a local treasure and worthy of praise. They have a wide variety of foods to try out, and a bar with at least a few microbrews available. I tried out the T.A.B., Turkey Avocado & Bacon; which also comes with cheese and tomato, on toasted bread. It was really good, though if I ever order a second I might request them to double the avocado. I have been told that many of their other plates, from steak to pizza, are equally delicious, so it serves as a good excuse to have a meal there 2 or 3 times a week, assuming you are stuck in the area with not many options. There is a main entrance by the Family Dollar; and main dining can get a little loud if it is busy. There is a secondary entrance to the bar around back, adjacent to the Southern parking lot, there are a few tables back there and outdoor seating as well (I think all of like 2 tables outside). At least in my case, the bar was the more intimate, quieter setting. read more

Living in the Bennett area the diner is convenient, the food is okay at best and to be honest not bad for the value. The menu over the last few years is old and like I said its convenient. While we all know most of the food is frozen or canned we went in after a long day and not really into the drive to tower road to go to Chili's or Applebee's we decided to go to the diner. The soup of the day was New England clam chowder, being from the east coast I was reluctant but figure what the heck. When the server brought it to the table I noticed and commented on the color. Instead of being white it was more of on off tan. She said it was fresh (homemade) and just a little different, Well I can honestly say it was not the worst Clam Chowder I have ever eaten but it was close. The worst part was in one of the spoon full I bit into a piece of clam shell. Not a little chip (grain if dirt size) but a piece a little bigger than a dime. I showed it to the server and she was all apologetic and took the piece right over to Gene the owner. We never even got so much as a look from her. I was not looking for anything from them but to be honest I expected someone to come over and say something. I guess talking and laughing with other customers was more important. We eat the rest of our dinner, paid our bill and left. A simple word of advice, when eating there (if you do) watch what you eat. you never know what you're going to find in the food. You want be sure they are not watching and really don't seem to care. As far are we go, IF we ever go there again we are going to stay away from anything home made by them. we'll stick with the canned / frozen food which is about 95% of their menu. read more

I discovered this place one evening while on the way into town from Byers. I was a bit skeptical at first; "You mean there is a diner built into the side of a dollar store?!? MY trepidation was quickly replaced by amusement at the use they have made of the space. Specifically, finding the john takes you down a hallway to behind the kitchen where you also find a hidden private room, which always seems to be full. The decorations are sparse and the spaces are open, and not at all what you would expect from a diner. Tall ceilings with chandeliers mixed with country appointments combine into an interesting oleo. I had the Black and Bleu Burger, ordered medium, and french fries. She had the Reuben Sandwich, with french fries. The waitstaff was cheery and helpful while we ordered and the food arrived very quickly. The only low mark I can give is the fact that my burger was cooked further than my requested medium. It was somewhere between medium well and well done. Considering the speed at which we received out food, I would believe that the patty was already on the grille when I ordered and they did not take the time to grille one to my request. Oh well, everybody gets one. And, as that was the only negative for the trip, I can still give a confident five stars. Her Reuben Sandwich was one of the best I have ever had on Colorado. The Corned Beef was juicy and flavorful. There was a proper quantity of dressing on the sandwich, which is a relief. So many places want to drown the sandwich in the dressing resulting in the other flavors being covered. The marble rye bread appeared to have been toasted to perfection on the grille. Be sure to eat it over the plate, as it is one juicy sandwich. We had noticed the pie rack on the way on the door. We asked and were informed that most of the pies and cakes are made in house. We split a slice of blue berry pie. The waitress talked us into having it a la mode. The ice cream used appeared to be of the soft serve variety. I had never considered soft serve for pie a la mode before. It turns out, this is a great way to do it. The ice cream is soft and sits on the pie like whipped cream. The pie was absolutely delicious! It was well filled with berries and not overly gelatinous as it often they way I find them. Additionally, the fruit was still somewhat firm, indicating that it was not as overcooked as it the current norm. The pie and ice cream was such a delight to end the meal with. Except, we wanted more, and had to resist temptation as we walked past the pie rack while walking out of the door. Now that's effective product placement.. read more

Wow! We have eaten at the Diner every Sunday since they opened. The fare is typical Diner fare (home cookin' classics!), with the occasional gourmet special thrown in. The staff has always been friendly and the service is always excellent. The only reason I am only giving them four stars is because the dining room is really loud due to the high ceilings, and that makes the atmosphere kind of warehouse-ish. For larger parties, request to be seated in the bar. read more

wow, this place was so good. came from oklahoma and stopped for lunch, our waitress was very kind and the food was amazing. i got the club sandwich and my boyfriend got a bacon cheeseburger burger. the bread on my sandwich was toasted perfectly and it tasted fresh, fries were crispy too. the burger bun was toasted and buttery and the fries were also crispy. great service for a great price, wish they had one of these back where we're from! read more

A lot of people seemed to enjoy the French toast and breakfast burrito. Unfortunately we didn't have that. We fell for some interesting concepts, but concept was where it ended. Avoid anything with grits or green chili if you have any knowledge of what they are supposed to feel like, taste like, or look like. Personally didn't know you could make grits that watery or tasteless even just following package directions. Blech. read more
