On my most recent trip to Charleston, two friends and I decided that our trip would not be complete without stopping at one of the distilleries, since SC has only recently begun making their own alcohol within the last ten years or so. We stopped by High Wire and for $5 you get a tour and tasting. They do everything by hand in this one location for an impressive amount of distribution locations (various states and restuarants). And they only have 4 employees! That must be why the employees are so personable and friendly. We had a great chat at the bar as we sipped our vodka, rum, whiskey, and gins. The corn vodka was one of my favorites because you could definitely taste the corn. And as a farm to table approached distillery they have a another variety of corn spirit currently sitting in the barrel. We were three of the last people sitting at the bar, so we took our time perusing the selection of spirits on the wall. Amaro was one that caught our eye. Black Tea, Mint, Orange, and Youpon Holly gives this digestif a citrusy taste. We loved it because we used to work with Youpon Holly! (Naturally caffeinated for those of you who need a little something). Definitely worth a visit! read more

Did the tour of the distillery - was a really great experience. Juliette, the tour guide, was super knowledgeable and friendly! Afterwards, we got a whiskey flight and a cocktail, both of which were great. Chill, relaxed vibe in the bar area. We had a great time here. $5 each got us a tasting of four different spirits (vodka, rye, gin, and a very tasty amaro) and good conversation with the friendly employee behind the bar, who told us a lot about the distillery and the neighborhood. We didn't get a chance to go on a tour, since we came during the week, but High Wire is definitely worth a stop if you're on the walk down King St to or from old town Charleston. Best craft bourbon on the planet. Taking some back to Missouri to share. Certainly worth a sip or two.

So we happened upon this place after hitting up Butcher & Bee. It was not one of their usual tasting days, and it was about 1-2 in the afternoon. It was completely empty save for two workers. However, one of them was kind enough to offer us the tasting flight on the spot. $5 tasting of 5 flavors. In total about 1 shot's worth. I forget the entire range of products, but for me, the gin was definitely the best. Smooth and laced with not only juniper but also hints of other spices. The rest of their lineup was rather weak. Nothing awful but nothing great. They're new and seem to be playing around with their formulas still, so I wouldn't write them off just yet. I heard their bourbon was fantastic when it was available, but who's to say? read more

Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and not pretentious. The liquor is high quality and distinctive. What more do you want from a distillery? For less than $10 you get 4-5 samples (one third of a shot each) plus a tour of the facility. It's a rather small operation right now, so the "tour" is really just a guy explaining the process as you stand in front of the distillation tanks. Maybe that was just our particular timing; there may be more activity at different times. Regardless, it was the right amount of interesting for anyone who wants to see how the genie gets put in the bottle, without getting bogged down in too much of the details. Although, if you want to geek out, the folks there seemed like they would be more than willing and capable to oblige. Of the samples offered, I especially liked the vodka and gin, and the sorghum whiskey was fun. They also have a light and dark rum. Those didn't stand out as much for me, but I would gladly welcome them in my home bar. The tasting area is small, but not cramped. It is clean and comfortable, with a very smart pre-Prohibition era design. They share free on-site parking with Butcher & Bee, in the light industrial section of upper King St., just beyond where most tourists venture but plenty safe enough. All in all, our party of seven felt very welcomed and enjoyed our visit. I will definitely include High Wire in any future tours of the downtown scene for out-of-town guests. And, of course, I will be stopping by, from time to time, whenever I need to pick up my spirits. read more

My husband and I walked 20 minutes in the heat to check out this distillery. We walked in, were not greeted, I had to say hi first. He asked what we would like, I said a tour. He said the 2:00 tour was booked. Ok....can I try a tasting flight? "No, because you would need to leave in 5 min". He literally wouldn't even let us see the drink menu. I don't understand, you need to shut down the entire distillery every time a tour starts? How does that make any business sense? He said we could come back later for a tour but the whole situation and general lack of friendliness left me feeling uneasy. I know when I'm not welcome at an establishment. read more

We'd been meaning to try this place out for a while, as its in our neighborhood. Finally, on a day that turned out to be much too hot for a leisurely walk, their sandwich board with $5 tasting & tour lured us in... Really nice people, delicious boozes, very fair prices. We had a great time, and went home with the Hometown Vodka and an awesomely spicy-delicious Bloody Mary mixer- because it was that kind of day, but we also very much enjoyed the other spirits as well. A few weeks later, I dropped by again to buy my sweetheart his birthday present: HighWire's sweet & exceptionally delicious Sorghum Whiskey, as well as Bittermilk's Old Fashioned mixer. Not only did the guys remember both my sweetie and I, they continued the conversation we'd struck up with them that first day, and were kind enough to wrap my present up for me, gratis! Spur of the minute stop. Nicely greeted when we entered. Reserved tour of 8 was entering when we came in...and he included us and served us in the midst of entertaining the tour. Vodka was smooth. I contacted them via email as I'm now running the bar program at a Mediterranean inspired farm to table restaurant that is set to open in February requesting info on their product. The only reason why it's on the opening list of gins is bc a regular from their other restaurant requested it. I never heard back from them (a little more offended bc I'm from Charleston and will always promote Charleston products when possible) Any company that doesn't want to return a simple email requesting tasting notes and any other info they can give on their product to a person that runs the bar program in an Atlanta restaurant is a spirit that I have no desire to promote and absolutely no desire to put on my shelf. read more

Was disappointed. Stopped in yesterday while on a mini vaca. Your website states that you offer tours and tastings, but does not state it's required.... upon arrival we were told that we could not be served because the "tour" was already filled and that we could return at 4. Very frustrating when we wanted to spend money at your distillery then not being able too. You should update your website so people do not waste their time waking in to walk back out.. read more

I came here for the Food Film Festival in April, and it was so much fun! The cocktails were absolutely delish and the staff was super friendly. I don't usually like Gin, but their Gin is out of this world. Can't wait to go back! read more

$5 tastings gets you premium SEVERAL times distilled vodka, rum, bourbon, and 2 gins. Well, if you see these liquors offered, know that they are pure enough to drink without a mixer. We bought a bottle for a gift, and really enjoyed the upper King St. environment while we were there. This is a beautiful facility. read more

What an awesome find! I was told to get lunch at Butcher and Bee by some locals while I was in town for the weekend. While eating the best grilled cheese of my life, I gazed out the window at the sign for High Wire Distilling Co. I pulled them up on my phone and saw that they had $5 tasting and tours every hour. It was 12:50, so I finished my sandwich and headed over. It was just me and two employees. One of them was the co-owner, Ann. They were both awesome, super friendly, and taught me all about distilling liquors! They had me smell sorghum, and eat a juniper berry to better understand the flavors that go into their liquor! How cool! Two others joined after my private tasting and joined us for the tour through their operation. All of the bottles are filled and labeled by hand. What a neat operation! I left with a bottle of Jack Rudy small batch tonic and the Hat Trick gin. What an awesome, unique, and flavorful gin and tonic I had when I got home! Thanks! read more

Excellent people making excellent gin! And rum! And whiskey! Stopped by late in the day so it was just the three of us talking about booze. Vodka is really neat! Made from 100% corn mash so it maintains a hint of sweet. Silver rum is great but the gold rum is even better! The whiskey. Anazing. Grab several bottles, trust me you are going to love it! The gin... highlight of the show in my opinion. Floral and sweet and nutty and too many other flavors to describe on this tiny keyboard of mine... simply wonderful. This is one of my favorite places in Charleston. The gin is citrusy, bright, and very affordable. The amaro is unique and great on its own or mixed. The whiskeys are all great. Stop in for the tasting or to buy a bottle direct from an impressive local distillery. They are working on the licensing to be able to sell cocktails there and I will definitely be back! read more

Love this Mom & Pop production! The tour was very interesting & informative. The small scale operation meant we got the personal touch. We got to see the bottling too, which was lucky. I was already a fan of their Hat Trick Gin having had it many times around town, but I am forever a fan of everything else they have to offer now that I've visited their distillery. After being inside all day from the potential threat of Hurricane Michael, my boyfriend and I thought we'd branch out and try something new to get us out of the house for a little while. We were warmly greeted by Ryan and enjoyed two amazing flights, their signature flight and whiskey flight. Ryan was super knowledgeable about the liquors we were tasting, giving us flavor profiles, background on how they were made, and the occasional fun fact about the liquor or ingredients that tied into Charleston/SC history. After finishing the flights we enjoyed two of their signature cocktails that were absolutely delicious! I would recommend checking this place out to anyone. My wife and I recently stopped in to High Wire Distilling Co. for a tasting on our trip to Charleston. The gentleman who conducted our tasting was friendly as could be and the different liquors were all very unique and tasty. While I wish I could of bought a bottle of each of their offerings, we settled on getting the gin and sorghum whiskey as I could only fit so much in my luggage on our flight back to Pennsylvania. If visiting Charleston or if you live in the area, I couldn't recommend this distillery highly enough. Also, when we walked in, there was a cute dog on the catwalk above us, which means these people love their dog enough to bring him to work, so that makes me love them even more.
