It's a lovely property in a great location at the heart of the action on Congress Ave (a few blocks…read morefrom downtown). The club is beautifully decorated, and the restaurant/bar serves good food and drink. We stayed in a nice hotel room, but were quite surprised to discover that we had no hot water. After many attempts to fix it, and move us to another room that also did not have hot water, and offer us a third room, we decided to stay in the original room. We wasted a lot of time packing/unpacking, moving between rooms. Eventually one staffer admitted the property had poor hot water circulation in some areas and that the "property was not built as a hotel". The maddening part of all this is the reluctance of the management to admit to what is a known issue, and to offer us a free breakfast as compensation for a $1000 stay. The staff are highly trained to be polite, engaging and outwardly helpful, but are totally unequipped to deal with a real problem that is not easily fixed or papered over.

Coming here requires a change in perspective. It is a wonderful space to work during the day or…read morehold an in-person meeting. Think of it as a calm, upscale sitting lounge with lots of natural light (but still a moodiness, owing to the dark furnishings), that also happens to have food and drinks available. You may not be promptly served menus like in a restaurant; they aren't going to rush you out to turn your table after 45 minutes either. Come to sit and chat or work, and appreciate the fact that you don't have to dash out to get a bite to eat when you get too hungry. The guac is great. The protein in the smoothies is not sufficiently blended.

Based on an invitation from a Yelp friend, I ended up at Pershing Hall again for Motown Mondays…read more On December 22nd, Pershing Hall not only featured Motown Mondays, but also their Yule Groove and Holiday Market. The Matchmaker Band was belting some soulful songs while guests danced the night away. In addition, local vendors were selling their wares from jewelry and fur coats to books and winterwear, i.e. Spider Goddess Divination, LA LO LA Clothing, and Thunderhouse Media Group. Guests consumed holiday cocktails, competed at Pershing Hall's Ugly Sweater Social, and shopped at the Holiday Pop-Up Market with local vendors. Saint Nic aka Santa was milling about for photos along with his naughty elves. This event was free to the public along with free parking (normal entry fee is $5 for ladies). Doors and market opened at 5 PM, social from 6:30-8:30 PM, and Matchmaker Band began singing and playing at 8:30 PM. It is always fun dancing at Motown Mondays. In full transparency, I enjoyed the band more the last time we were at Motown Mondays. However, I am sure I will return.

If you haven't heard of it--you are truly missing out! On to the actual event space and area. There is no free parking at Pershing for the public so plan to take rideshare/carpool or bike if you're close enough! It's a bit of a rough neighborhood so just be mindful when parking late at night. When you arrive security will direct you to the back event space where this event is free to enter and open to the public. Nice restrooms, plenty of space, great stage for Jams! I wasn't hungry when I arrived but, I did sample the carrot salad ($14) from the menu. The name should be changed to whipped feta and carrots. It's more of a spread/dip than a salad and it didn't come with pita or anything to eat it with. The Carrot "salad" was overpriced but (I cannot lie) delicious--tangy with a prefect hint of mint! My mocktail was also great. I got the Cobbler (?) refreshing and tasted as if it had jicama in it! This drink was overpriced too at about $12 for a mocktail. It's bar service only so you order there and if you get food they will bring it to you.
