Highland Gourmet Scones is great! Their hours aren't very long, I think 8-12 on weekdays, so it took me a while to catch them when they were open. Over a few visits, I've tried almost everything on the menu, with my faves being the Hazelnut Cream and the Cherry Almond. Some of the options are fresh baked and still warm, but they also have frozen options if you want to stock up at home. I've tried both ways and they are always perfect! This little gem of a place is baking another level of deliciousness! I first received a tin of scones a few years ago as a Christmas gift. They were amazing and I was hooked. I started to order them as gifts and always receive rave reviews on how wonderful they are. So many different flavors that it makes it difficult to narrow down what to get. I was looking for a recipe for scones and stumbled upon this place instead. What's better than making your own scones? Having someone else make them! I checked the website and was thrilled to see they had a drive thru and were taking call ahead orders. Lots of varieties, it was tough to choose. I decided to get a half dozen. The flavors I picked were cherry amaretto, lemon blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, toasted coconut, and orange cranberry. Honestly, they were all great but my favorite was the toasted coconut. I really enjoyed these in the morning with a cup of tea. I have a baked goods setting on my microwave and it warmed these up nicely. But they were good even without warming them. Update of my Yelp review on 9/12/22: Finally, on 9/14, I received an email from the owner of Highland Gourmet Scones (HGS) stating: "on your claim with UPS we'll be sending a replacement for the 5 broken scones to you today." However, I adamantly communicated to HGS that the damage to my original order was not the fault of UPS (neither the tin nor the box was showing any abuse). Furthermore, I was uncomfortable with HGS filing a claim "on my behalf" & passing on the final determination to UPS. On 9/16, I received a tin with SIX scones, which I thought was fair under all the circumstances previously noted in my 9/12 review. However, the top scone in the tin was, once again, SEVERELY CRUSHED & in crumbles! Obviously, HGS has a problem with packaging & preparing the scones for delivery. Perhaps, HGS should monitor their staff to ensure the contents are in perfect condition for shipping. Also, a bold FRAGILE! stamp on the outside box as well as the existing "Perishable" stamp may prevent this situation in the future. I unequivocally do NOT recommend this company due to its unacceptable customer service and steadfast denial of any responsibility on their part. read more

Oooooh, where do I begin!?!? First, with the super-nice girl with the short hair who comes to the window to take our order (we were WAY too lazy to actually walk inside). She was SO nice and accommodating. Or, do I start with ordering several scones to go - then eating one in the car (cranberry/orange) and having to spin my car around (rubber burning) to go back for more??? So, yes, I liked the scones. Loved the scones. Sooooo delicious. We had the cranberry/orange, a blueberry/lemon, and a coconut. Can't say which was the best because they were all beyond wonderful. If you don't believe me, read the other reviews - all 5s. We were just passing thru for the day and had seen this scone store. We couldn't wait till it opened in the morning to be the first in line. I am so glad we did. The young lady at the window made the whole scone experience even better with her great personality. Go here, go now. If you live in Birmingham, lucky you. So, we are currently down in the Birmingham area for Thanksgiving, and in a storefront in front of the hotel, I saw Highland Gourmet Scones. It looked like a decent coffee shop, so the first morning there, I wandered over. And wow. Based on the smell alone, I ordered a custom tin, then took home the mocha, original (golden raisin), and an orange-cranberry. And we sampled, and both agree, this is a find! These are clearly the best scones I have encountered - from the mass-produced at Starbucks to the fancy at Third Coast Cafe in Chicago's Gold Coast. These beat them all. Properly dry, epic flavor, and just that incredible smell. I can't say I have sampled them all, but of those I have, I prefer the Cherry-Almond, Original, and Orange-Cranberry. I've driven by several times and wondered if they were a bakery, shipper or seller of mixes. They sell freshly baked scones and Irish coffee and tea. Scones come in regular sizes and wee bites. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the owner, Connie. We were asking about the different flavors they offer and she offered us a sample of each. I'm so glad she did. Some of the flavors I would never have normally tried were my favorites. Connie will tell you the Pumpkin Spice is more accurately described as Fall spice. It's good but it really has no pumpkin flavor. Would be delicious with a side of pumpkin butter. I also loved the cherry amaretto but normally hate amaretto. Connie and Mark make a great coffee and scone. We will definitely be back. read more

Received a tin of 6 cranberry scones as a thankyou gift from Kathy Ludwig in Alabama. After scarfing the first scone down, called to thank her for the delicious gift. These scones are delicious, soft, travel well and are a delight to receive as a gift. Much better than starbucks in fact no comparison. I like the round shape and it's thickness. So yummy. I hate that I love them so much because I am trying to eat healthier. A client came in my office today and had a warm blueberry lemon scone and a bag of "Wee Bits". I thought I had died and gone to heaven. They were soooo good that I stopped by after work to get my mom a bag of Lemon Blueberry Wee Bits for Mother's Day. Very pleased with every visit to Highland Gourmet Scones. I live out of the state and any time that I am in town I swing by for a scone pick up. I at first tried the mini's to distinguish which ones would be our favorite, but I have to be honest we like them all. So we have upgraded to purchasing the large scones in a variety of flavors. A few have made it to being a fan favorite - Cherry Amaretto, Pumpkin Spice, Toasted Coconut, and Orange Cranberry. The regular size scones are a bit more moist, and have a stronger flavor. We highly recommend them, and have not been disappointed with any of our orders!! The one time I returned home without scones..........we had a few sad faces. Stopped in here today for a surprise treat for my 8 year old daughter. She chose the lemon blueberry and I had the orange cranberry. I had every intention of snapping a pic to go along with this review, however the scones did not last that long! They were so delicious!! Oh, my word! I had totally forgotten there was even a Highland Scone store! I can remember visiting the one in downtown Birmingham. Well, I'm lucky because it is now located near my house. We went there on a whim and were not disappointed! The new owner is a warm, friendly guy who offered us "wee bites" which are smaller versions of the large scones. We were hooked immediately. We left with more than we planned to purchase. We just finished them. They were heavenly. It is great to know that the new owners have treated the legacy as a privilege. We WILL be back. OMG - unlike anything i have eaten. Family owned and i LOVE that they are so backed up with orders at christmas, they close the regular doors. I didn't know there was a scone place in Birmingham until a friend suggested we go, and I am so glad she did! I lived in Ireland, and the scones we had at Highland Gourmet were better than any I had in the old country. The toasted coconut was to die for, and the mint chocolate chip was really good as well. They're soft, buttery, and just delicious. Perfect alongside a cup of their imported Irish tea. I wish they had more of a sitting area inside, because that would be the ultimate study spot, but the outside tables worked perfectly for a pretty day. Don't miss the scones here! read more

Stayed at hotel behind this store. So hubby popped in and got two scones...pumpkin and coconut. Although very tasty we both had our tongues go tingly and numb. Usually a sign of allergy to something they have put in the scone. Possibly "natural flavoring?" I'm guessing. I don't really know. It was after a few very small bites. Then we saved the scones for later in the day and tasted again and same thing happened. Hubby didn't know it happened to me until I said I think something's wrong with these scones.
