Wish I could really love this place since I live in the neighborhood, but I find much better prices, quality/variety of plants, guarantees, service, and layout at the bigger nurseries like Gerten's/Bachmann's, or even Leitner's. I've bought plants here that quickly died despite appropriate care, and the store wouldn't replace them. Sometimes what is available in store already looks half dead. They are also very picky about what you can use store credit for on the few items that are covered under their guarantees. I have a really hard time finding what I need due to the compact layout and lack of much signage. Employees are usually friendly and helpful but it can be hard to find one who is available. Even though it's a much longer drive, I usually go to Bachmann's instead to spend less and enjoy an easier experience plus worry-free guarantees. read more

Love this neighborhood little (not that so little) nursery. They have variety of Japanese maple, and a lot of gardening decoration accessories. You can find some rare plants or flower here. They have a lot of different size pots and designs. They have very good customer service, willing to assist. Some plants are well price and others are a little bit more expensive but because of their rare uniqueness so if it's what you're looking for, don't mind paying for the price. Highland is my favorite nursery in the Cities; they have a huge selection, from perennials to annuals to veggies to trees to houseplants, & everything always looks SO healthy. They also have a huge store inside with more colors & varieties of pots than you could ever want, plus assorted other supplies and knick knacks. I would say price-wise, they're about on par with other standalone nurseries (forget box store prices for gnat-infested plants that die within a month); they do have a wide selection of cheaper, smaller plants as well. Everyone who's ever helped me at Highland, from folks working outside to the checkout clerks, has always been so kind & super helpful. Everyone either seems to know everything, or they can at least direct you to someone who has the answers. My only gripes are: the parking lot is small & people don't always navigate it in the most efficient way; there's plenty of street parking, though, which I usually opt for instead. Pushing a car through the yard isn't always the easiest, so folks with mobility concerns should keep that in mind. That being said, I'm almost positive one of the lovely employees would help if you need it :) This nursery rocks & I can't recommend it enough! read more

We recently stopped in to this business, planning to make a large purchase of trees, bushes and other landscaping material. We had some general questions on planting and spoke with an older woman who we believe was the owner (by the way she was ordering the younger employees around). When I asked my question to her, she snapped back at me and shouted: Google it! Then she just walked away. Since she obviously didn't want our business, we went to Leitners instead, in the same neighborhood. The staff at Leitners were so friendly and helpful. We ended up spending thousands of dollars between their garden store and landscape shop. We were very happy with our purchase. We certainly will never go back to the Highland Nursery given their rudeness. read more

I came here because I know I will find things I want. My most resent trip I found an Episcia that had 3 blooms on it. I have not seen one in bloom in so long so I got it. I've driven by this place hundreds of times, always thinking, "someday I should check this place out." This week had someday in it. Oh my gosh! Why didn't I go in years ago? Amazing selection of houseplants -- better than anywhere I've been recently -- all looking healthy and thriving. Fun and novel lawn ornaments (need a hanging monkey for your jungle-theme garden?) and beautiful gazing balls. And though I have no need for outdoor plants, wandering around their displays made me smile. I bought several houseplants, including one I've been searching for for five years. One of my favorite if not the best garden centers in the Twin Cities. Unlike a Gertens or a Bachmans, this place holds true to the ma and pa stores of old with their quirky outdoor ornaments, hard to find species of plants, and just all out variety. Their edibles section has a bunch of heirloom varieties which I love to grow in my garden. I am also able to find certain species of edibles such as vine kiwis and miniature pomegranates, basically non-existent anywhere else. There is also a large variety of perennial and annual plants in a rainbow of colors depending on what you are looking for. Perennial bushes are in large supply as well compared to the local competition. Prices are pretty reasonable and they have a customer club to save a little bit of $. I think they also honor a one year guarantee on their plants. They also have a neat gift store that has a lot of unique stuff for the garden/outdoor lover. During the holidays, they decorate the area and sell gifts. Very neat little shop off of 7th Street. Be warned though that getting to their parking lot can be a hazard depending on time of day. 7th Street can be insane during rush hour so use caution when pulling in and out of the lot. read more

This single growing season alone Highland scored three plant varieties I was having a hard time finding (Fire & Ice Hydrangea, Bailey's compact viburnum and white kismet coneflower). I bought 3 plants from this place and all 3 died. I bought a "gallery mix lupine" from here and a "gallery blue" from Menards. The one I got from Highland Nursery never took and just slowly died. The one from Menards flourished, bloom twice for me last summer, and this spring is looking great again. I also bought a clematis that never grew. And a Tree peony that never grew. This incredible woman knew a gem when she found one snd today Highland Nursery is a place I send my friends across the city to see. Its not a big box shop, its a garden boutique and a gem of one. My favorite for sure and its 30 plus miles from my house. If you are looking for hard to find plants and grasses, great concrete statues and iron work. My review rating is based solely on the indoor plants selection. Holy moly, this is absolutely the best indoor-plant selection I've ever seen. They take amazing care of their plants, unlike some box-stores that shall not be mentioned until I review them, where the plants look like they're on hospice. That just ain't right. I wanted some specific succulent thing like a typical hipster stereotype and they obliged. I, coming to my older and wiser senses, was quickly diverted and distracted by the seemingly endless selection of houseplants in the greenhouse. I found a absolutely beautiful plant I'd never seen before and a gorgeous three-tone color pot. If you need to prepare for winter by bringing the outdoors inside this is your place. I've been coming here for years to purchase my mom a moss hanging basket. She absolutely loves them they have always been overpriced but now they're $80. That's just way too much to pay for a hanging basket and they don't make them as pretty as they used to. That used to cut in the side of the moss and have flowers hanging out of it now there only just planted normal in the top. I was surprised at all the negative reviews on yelp for this business but I'm starting to agree with everyone else. I was here for about a half an hour looking around and trying to find something else other than an overpriced hanging basket. None of the employees ever said hello or smiled at me or asked if I needed help finding anything. I really used to like it here they have a great variety of plants you can't find anywhere else. But $80 for a bowl of moss with flowers in it. Sorry mom but you're getting something else it'll last a lot longer than one summer. read more

Just went with my family to get a few plants and pots. Some items pricey, but the mums were 1/2 the cost that I'd seen anywhere. Recommended some plants that I needed for outdoor/indoor, as well as proper indoor plants that require minimal care. Upon purchasing 5 ceramic pots, as we took them outside, three broke. The attendant came out and replaced them, no charge to us. We were floored with that kind customer service. Will definitely return! read more

This place is a pretty little place that I have visited over the years. I travel a good distance to get there so if there is a particular item I am looking for I would like to know if it is in stock before I make the trip. I tried calling but got a recorded message saying that calls wouldn't be answered as they were too busy. CUSTOMER SERVICE NOT! Anyway the message said that they would answer emails after hours when they apparently had extra time to provide customer service. I followed that directive but no one bothered to get back to me. Now I am not special or entitled and consider myself a reasonable person. I work in retail where we have been encouraged to provide customer service. Apparently Highland operates by a different standard. I will forgo my trip there this year and probably for years to come seeing I'm not valued as a customer. read more

Mistreated loyal customers and accused them of lying. I've been going here for years - houseplants, gifts, outdoor gardening. I was consistently taken aback by how rude, dismissive, and/or uninformed the staff were (the latter always by their own admission). This doesn't apply to the younger, college-aged seasonal staff. I had one good experience and kept telling myself it's important to support local businesses. For this reason, we bought seven hydrangeas last year. They were pricier than other places but we were ok with that - we wanted to support our community. We showed them photos and measurements and sunlight stats for where we planned to place them. We asked for guidance. After passing us off to different staff several times, they finally helped us select two types. 2 of the 7 plants did not make it; the others flourished. We called when they were going downhill and asked for advice. They told us to wait. The months passed and the plants gradually disappeared beneath the soil. When we tried to replace them under the "hardy plant" guarantee, one staff member - very loudly to the point it felt she was yelling at us - basically accused my husband and then me of lying and telling different stories (we didn't - we were just describing two different points in time as the plants slowly failed, and she would have known that if she hadn't interrupted me). She said what we described was impossible and it was either our fault or we moved the plants to another location (we didn't). After being extremely rude to both of us, we said 'thank you' to avoid making a scene, got our replacement plants, and immediately went elsewhere for the rest of the hydrangeas and hostas we planned to buy for the front yard. At home, when we dug up the empty spots and sifted through the dirt, we finally found a few random hydrangea roots. What is the point of having this policy, of having open and curious and loyal customers, willing to learn and communicate, if you are going to treat them like lying fraudsters? I should have known better. How you treat your customers under normal circumstances - dismissive and rude - was a warning sign I should have heeded. read more

I have shopped at highland for years. They take care of their plants and have a vast variety of genus / species for any environment. Prices mayshock afew people but plantlovers please unite! EXTREMELY shocked and taken aback by the harrassment my girlfriend and myself just experienced. We pulled up in the parking lot at 10:55AM and were waiting for the store to open. The Manager, TERI OTTERNESS, a caucasian lady with short brunette hair, was unloading pallets from a truck and first yelled for me to move my car out of the way. I reversed into the parking spot directly in front of the store. She precedes to get out of her forklift and scream at us to "get the fuck out of her parking lot" 2 times. My girlfriend calmly told her that we shop her all the time and that were were waiting until 11AM, when the store opens. Her entire demeanor changed and she said "oh, yeah...well your tabs are extremely expired" which I replied "yeah, I know, I have a yellow paper tag" then she just walked away. We told the lady inside what happened and she apologized and she "she's probably just stressed she has to move all those pallets out the truck " . We are both African-American, she clearly racial profiled us as we were sitting and just waiting. We will no longer be shopping here. Thanks to the other employees that were respectful up to this point. Today was our last purchase. read more

Highland Nursery is one of the best nurseries around -- not just for their quality, but also for their variety.. I've found many unusual or hard to find plants there that you just can't find at the big box nurseries. I'm forever on a shoe string budget so sometimes all I can afford to do is drool as I wander through their gardens but when they have sales--there's no better value around. The staff is always helpful and the indoor displays are gorgeous. ... but their gardens in the back are worthy of awe... I used to drop my kids off at school and stop in just to wander through their back garden which feels like the private gardens of some great estate with its sculptures and fountains. They're also a family-owned business with a long history--my best friend used to work for them back in the 60's!--and I love supporting small and local business. I know they had to fight tooth and nail to stay in their location a few years ago when the city wanted to put a K-Mart or one of those monstrosities there and I'm soooo glad they fought and won. St Paul would be a poorer place without them. read more

I witnessed an employee or owner scream at the top of her lungs for an elderly customer to get out of the store. It was 10:20 in the morning. The flower shop had only been open 20 minutes. I don't know what the man did or said, but it was very unsettling to all the other customers in the shop. The whole staff acted like this was normal behavior or were afraid she was going to loose it again. Most garden shops workers are working overtime....you did not need to scream that in the man's face. It was an awful start to my Memorial Day weekend. It's a beautiful place with healthy looking flowers and plants. However, I agree it's incredibly disorganized. I hate having to buy several plants, toting a cart around the small aisles. Have shopped here for years. Owners are friendly and very knowledgable. If you can't find a plant that will grow in a particular place or have a slug problem they always have a solution. Expensive, but then all the other , cheaper places have gone out of business- so I think they know what they're doing. If you want cheap go to Home Depot or Walmart but only if you know the day the plants arrive and don't care about bees.I don't find it disorganized- everything is where it's always been. This is an old gas station that grew and grew like adding on to an old house. Oh, and in season it's quite crowded. So, a lot of other people must find it useful and convenient. I don't understand the negative reviews. Highland Nursery is not perfect( neither is Gertens or Bachmans) but it's very good and we're lucky it's close to home! read more
