I've been here once before in the summer! This place is a real cute garden center with so much unique plants and garden decor. I honestly can't get enough. This time I was invited by a friend who told me they were having a holiday night market on 12/11 from 4pm-9pm. I was immediately yes! I arrived and immediately fell in love with the cozy Christmas and winter set up. It was like walking into a mini Christmas village. There were plenty of local vendors selling everything from art crafts, to bread and food sample kits. Santa Claus along with his pet was there ready for photo ops. This is an annual event at Tangletown Gardens, but I definitely recommend it next year if there have the holiday market. Good holiday gifts to get for loved ones. read more

Very cute and small garden center. They have one of the nicest and cool pottery/urns that I found in the Twin City but a bit pricey. The little store was packed with plants inside, but it was well organized. Outside was well decorated and it's really clean. Very friendly and helpful staffs. I bought a milkweed plant here last year after talking with one of the staff who seemed confident and knowledgeable about the plants and as a beginner in gardening I felt like I could follow their advice with how confident they were. I did inform them that I live in an apartment and planned to keep the plant on the balcony in a pot and they never mentioned any concern with this. They also informed us of their warranty where if a perennial doesn't come back in the spring you can bring the plant back to return for a refund or exchange (with no mention that the plant must be planted in the ground for them to honor the warranty). Now fast forward a year later, my plant did not come back in the spring so I brought the plant back to see if they could let me know what went wrong and honor the warranty they mentioned. The manager and employee had both blamed us for taking the advice of one of their employees and in their explanation of perennials needing to be planted into the ground not potted to come back spoke to me very rudely and made me feel stupid for thinking that a potted perennial plant would come back... It felt pretty humiliating being talked down to in this way in front of other customers and employees even though we clearly were beginners and explained we had followed the advice their own staff had given us. Despite this, all we got was "I am sorry you received misinformation" with no refund or exchange let alone a genuine apology. I am only giving 2 stars for the fact that they did take my dead plant and dirt to compost. I wouldn't recommend coming to this business if you don't already have a strong knowledge of plants or are a beginner. This was super disheartening to me as I wanted to continue to support small businesses in the area rather than big chain garden centers. I will start with my love for Tangletown Gardens. I have been coming to this business since 2019 and will continue to do so. Not only are they involved in their community, but the staff are so helpful and friendly. It is fun to check out year round as they have different seasonal items that are timeless. Now, to my favorite part. I bought a house in 2022, so for the first time since living with my parents, I was able to have a live Christmas tree. I know they aren't for everyone, but they are more sustainable than fake trees, so it is a priority in my household. This is the second year I have bought my tree from TangleTown and I won't go anywhere else. Last year we bought a Wisconsin tree, and this year we bought a Minnesota tree. It feels great to support local tree farms while also supporting our local garden center. There are many tree options, and if you are looking for something specific, the staff can help you out. You can also look at the price range and find something that fits your budget. If you can't get a tree, they have many other seasonal decorations to decorate your space with. And, if it is your first time buying a live tree, they will tell you everything you need to know. Once you pick out your tree, they will trim the bottom, offer to let you keep the bottom branches for your own use (if you want to make additional decorations) and tie it to your car. All I had to do was show them my car, and unlock the doors, so they could tie it down. It was effortless as a customer. We also ran inside to buy an ornament, as we did last year. While I love TangleTown Gardens year round, this is a new tradition that I am excited for each year. I love supporting my local business as I get ready for the holidays! read more

If you're a lover of plants, gardens, or anything yard related, get down there immediately to Tangletown. This place is a horticulturalist dream. I myself was a bit overwhelmed despite thinking I knew a thing or two about plants, but holy cow, do they have more than you could possibly believe in a relatively small space. Loved the native plants to select from and all the pollinators. It's great to see places offering that as that's what my wife really likes to have in her garden and landscaping. Make sure to pencil out a solid hour of time at the minimum to look around!! A thing to note: they offer a warranty on their perennials which is so dope and a really solid business offering as nothing is worse than getting plants, taking care of them, and then them dying from just being a poor quality. read more

I think I might of just found my absolute favorite go to for plants. Tangletown Gardens not only have the best selection of plants but also help you make the best choices. I brought in a large pot and found a home for some interesting succulents. Such a great variety and staff couldn't have been more helpful. They have a wide selection of indoor plants but don't overlook their outdoor space too. They are a big advocate of evolution and container planting. In other words for container gardening they offer unique plants that can tolerate cold now but also transition well into summer pots. You'll find lots of essentials for planting here. Cute shop, has healthy-looking perennials but that's not what I was here for. I came to look at the advertised rare and uncommon houseplants since I am a collector/house plant enthusiast. I noticed a few red flags going into the store: the door was wide open, leaving thousands of dollars worth of exotic plants exposed to 45°F weather for hours on end and the plants they had (although a great selection) are overpriced for their small genetic variegations and overall poor health. It was hard for me to see a plant I like that wasn't sick or sickly-looking. I'm all for supporting local businesses, but I won't be returning to this plant shop. I just don't trust how they manage these types of plants while charging outrageous prices for low-quality "rare" plants. I would much rather just order from an online or different local retailer that actually puts proper care into the plants! That's the whole point of the business! read more

What a delightful place to spend some time. They have unusual plants though not extensive, interesting items for sale and a bit of quirkiness. I really enjoyed spending some time looking around the shop and settling on a couple of unusual house plants. I will most definitely go back again to see what they have in spring. If you go in the winter, the neighborhoods around the area have great Christmas lights. We took a short drive and loved the displays. Tangletown Garden is a small garden store which has a somewhat limited selection of plants and a very extensive collection of upscale pots and garden decor. Unfortunately their prices are high and although some staff are helpful many are indifferent and act as if they wish you would just go away. We used their landscaping service once and were unhappy with the individual that we worked with. This is a boutique store and not the place I would recommend for your everyday gardening needs due to their limited selection and high prices. If you are looking for a nice upscale decorative pot and can't find what you need at Bachmans or Wagners you should give them a try however. read more

Walmart service at a small business. I was at Tangle Town looking for a plant to liven up my cubicle. My lady friend and I were the only ones in there and the worker was behind the counter talking on the phone. By the sounds of the conversation, it wasn't a customer. When, he finally ended the conversation I asked if he would show me some plants that would work well under fluorescent lighting. He'd acted as if I was a huge bother and then wasn't very helpful. Guess I'll make the decision with out his help. Finally I decided on a bonsai tree. I had learned a little about bonsai from a friend who's in the Minnesota bonsai society and has some questions for the clerk. "Do you know if this tree will work under the artificial light in my office?" "Yeah, it should do fine" "Great! Do you know if it needs a dormant period? Does it need to be put outside for the winter?" "Nope, it will be fine." Now, it's six weeks later and the tree is dead. I showed my friend who's in the bonsai society a photo and asked what I did wrong. "That's a Juniper, they need lots of light and need to be kept outside in the winter. They won't work well in a cubicle" Exactly the opposite as the unwelcoming worker told me! I would have been fine if the worker said he didn't know. But, he choose to lie instead. So the combination of the bad service and the lie which lead to my purchase being wrecked is was drove me to writing this review. read more

Today was my first and last visit to Tangletown Gardens. I saw three employees while I was there, and two of them said "hi" to me, but not one of them offered to help me find anything or asked if I needed any help. I walked past the same two employees several times and each time they were fully engaged in a conversation with each others' about their personal lives. The selection was nothing special. I know it's a small location, but there were more lawn decorations than plants. I was also surprised by how expensive everything was. I expected prices to be a little higher because it's South Minneapolis, but I was quite taken aback by just how high everything was priced! I was very disappointed with my visit - most specifically with the lack of customer service - and I will not be going back. read more

I'm a little torn about this place. It is a nice little shop that has all sorts of little knick-knacks and plants in pots and all sorts of things. With that in mind however the prices were astronomical. I really could not believe how expensive some of these items were. And from the looks of it many of these items were not exactly brand new. A lot of their lawn furniture and other outdoor items look like they had definitely been used. If you're going to have expensive prices on used things like at this place, I don't know how you expect people to buy it. I'll go to H Depot and buy new stuff for half the price. Also take note that they do not take American Express here. Which to me seems just baffling because on the prices for some of these items you would expect that they would take American Express. This is a great place to walk around, but is it a great place to buy plants? Well sure, if you think that paying way too much for your plant will make you care for it more responsibly and thereby extend the life of said plant. Tangletown is a beautiful little oasis and I'm all for buying local and paying a little more, but if you're going that route take a trip to Linder's or Gertens and pay a lot less for locally grown items. (And get a bigger selection, better quality plants, etc.) Now if you're searching for a gift (i.e. a unique garden sculpture made by local artists) that's another story entirely. Go here for that. I stopped in on our spring break visit to the Twin Cities. I was looking for succulents and was NOT disappointed. The dude working was incredibly helpful and kept showing me varieties I've never seen before! (I was too short to see higher on the plant rack so he brought lil plants down so I could see). My only regret is that I didn't purchase the additional 2-3 plants I was interested in. I'm already excited to stop in the next time we make it back up to the area! read more

I eventually located an employee who did not seem to want to help. When I told him what I was looking for all he wanted to know is why I wanted these plants. This place is fantastic. My wife and I have become avid gardeners since moving into our home in 2011 and we spend many summer days at Tangletown searching for new treasures for our yard. The employees here are amazing and have spent countless hours discussing our gardening hopes and dreams with us, giving honest feedback about what they think will and will not work, as well as what they like to do in their personal gardens. We built a new garden last summer and found many of our supplies at Tangletown. We are planning on putting in another this spring and will undoubtedly be returning to Tangletown for their fantastic service and inventory! **Added bonus, across the street from Wise Acre Eatery. Go for a lunch and gardening date and get an iced coffee to go, you won't regret it! **Second the sentiment on pricing being higher than other places, but the helpful/knowledgable staff more than makes up for it. They practically act as consultants and when available are more than willing to address any questions you may have. read more

Eh, not impressed. Arrangements are beautiful but they are GROTESQUELY overpriced. We viewed a wreath and i was expecting it to be $200 for the size, nope it was upwards of $400. They have lots of fun little items and arrangements inside but they are so jam packed in there you can hardly move around. A small pot with a few succulents was $60-80 when it would be more appropriate at $30. I think the prices were even more skewed since we had just come from Bachmans, which is a little high yet reasonable. It is a cute place but I wasn't so impressed with the plants or arrangements that i would have considered paying that amount of money. read more

I've been shopping at Tangletown Gardens for years, have taken classes there, and love their garden tour. This year because of Covid and the odd spring weather, I was having a hard time finding tomatoes. One of the center's staff worked with me picking out his favorites because I wasn't finding my usual varieties. Now I'm excited to taste these new varieties. The owner and staff are always friendly, helpful and willing to provide their knowledge and expertise. I just enjoy walking through the garden center and looking at things. I was shopping for houseplants and found a lovely variegated Jade plant. It was crawling with bugs, and when I asked the employee about it he told me that "Those are just spider mites, they won't hurt a plant like that." Spider mites spread rapidly and can quickly destroy an indoor plant collection. The mere fact that the salesperson would knowingly sell me a diseased plant shows an embarrassing lack of integrity. There are so many great plant and garden supply stores in Minneapolis, don't waste your money here! read more

Tangletown Gardens is beautiful - I actually would say stop by if you're in the area just to check it out because it is very pretty for a garden center with gorgeous products. Also cool is that they have a CSA, although I haven't personally used this service so I can't really rate it. However, to me, there are other garden centers that I would much rather go to. This is a garden center that seemed to cater to a pretty ritzy crowd. We wondered around for a long while trying to find the vegetable starter plants and seeds and were basically ignored by the workers, despite the fact that they were not busy at all. When a richer looking couple came in, the staff immediately asked them if they needed help. All of the products were beautiful but to me that isn't really what I want in a garden center. I want functional products, not elaborate sculptures and pretty pieces to put in a yard or garden. However, if you are looking for a great piece to put in your garden/yard and have quite a bit of money to spend, come here. The pieces truly were beautiful and high quality. Of course, there were plants but they didn't really have much for vegetable starter plants when we came, it really seemed more of a make your yard/garden pretty with pretty plants and pretty things kind of place. If this is what you want you will be overjoyed, if not skip it and get your gardening stuff elsewhere. But like I said, do stop in if in the neighborhood because it is very pretty. read more

Is this a garden store or a botanical garden?! Tangletown Gardens is simply stunning. It's like nothing I've ever seen before. I wasted an hour here without even really trying because there were so many interesting plants to look at and the presentation is gorgeous. A lot of the reviews are negative due to prices. This is definitely not a place to go for budget plants. This is a place, however, to go for high quality, well cared for and unique plants. I saw plants here that I've never seen available before locally. The $600 tree was GORGEOUS and incredibly unique. You may not be able to afford a $600 tree but some people, especially in that area, can and this is the store to suit their landscaping needs. Tangletown Gardens doesn't have the greatest selection but they have many basics and for the rest, they focus on less common plants. They also offer ridiculously amazing planters. I was absolutely in awe of the huge succulent planters they had for sale. At $140, they were practically in my dreams but again, there are people in that area that can afford those and the "sold " stickers prove it. I appreciated them for how beautiful they are, even if I can't afford them. While I was there, I did pick up a rock solid teddy bear sunflower plant for $5 and some organic fertilizer. I was impressed at how sturdy the sunflower stem was. As noted above, I had the impression that all of their plants were extremely healthy. Tangletown Gardens also stocks gardening gifts, cards and misc. They didn't have a lot of supplies, mostly gifts and the plants themselves. Oh yeah, and you can buy FARM FRESH EGGS here for about $3.50/doz! I do wish they had a better selection of house plants. read more

Tangletown has interesting items and items you dont find at many other spots. I've gotten a few neat garden pieces there and they get many items from local artists, so very cool. My fiancee got a small metal dachshund for our garden, which is now in our house. They are however over priced, you can find many of their plants for 30-50% less elsewhere...but they do have items you just cant find elsewhere. read more

I went to Tangletown for the first time looking for a flat of patunias. Clearly I underestimated this gem. I was floored by the variety, health of the plants, attention to detail. Of course they didn't sell flats of petunias (once I got inside it was obvious, this is a specialty nursery.) Beautiful varieties, many I had never seen before. It was amazing to see the numbers of plants, trees, shrubs the fit into a city lot size space.The staff was helpful, though I mostly looked in awe and planned to come back after going to a big box store to get the patunias. If you are looking expert advise and unique plants, this is a sweet little store with a big statement. read more

While Tangletown Gardens has many lovely (and expensive) items, the customer service is atrocious. After wondering through the displays for 30 minutes, not a single team member asked if there was anything special I was looking for. I finally found a flowering hanging basket (impatiens) that I had to seek out a team member to help me find another matching basket. Once I made the decision to buy, the team member suddenly was very accommodating, asking if I needed help carrying the baskets to my car. Within 5 days, the flowers began to shrivel and wilt. The baskets were kept in the shade and watered sufficiently. When a call was placed to the store to ask if their products had any guarantee, I was accused of not caring for the plants properly. Any good garden store's products will not die within 5 days of purchase, and any reputable business will stand by their merchandise with such a short period of time from date of purchase. This store has a reputation (deserved) for having unique garden items, as well as supporting the LGBT community. While these two business strategies may give a customer a "good" feeling when patronizing the establishment, the non-existent customer service will certainly eliminate any repeat business. Bottom line, you can do much better at Bachman's, Linder's, Gerten's, etc. and know that the company will stand by their products with no questions asked. read more

Soooooo overpriced. Gardening should be accessible for all. The prices here make it not so. I went to buy simple annuals as a fill-in for a few spots thinking I might need 12 or more of things like nasturtiums, marigolds, zinnias. Nothing fancy, nothing exotic. The price was $6.29 for each annual and there was one plant per pot. It's later in the season so things weren't even looking that great. These are all easy things one could plant by seed (I should have planned ahead). A quick calculation in my head made me realize that pricing was roughly a 2000% markup! (knowing you can buy a pack of seeds for a couple bucks). A pleasant worker informed me that the farm is organic and everything is grown there. I get that....but the margin just seems ridiculous. When you go to the grocery and buy an organic head of lettuce, it's more expensive but within reason. I am not on a budget and I spend 100's of dollars each year on pots and perennials without a blink of an eye, but this shocked me. I ended up leaving empty handed and went to Mother Earth where I bought beautiful healthy 6-packs for $5. I bought a flat and they are still making a good margin on it. Tangletown has some beautiful and unique items you can't get anywhere else but why overcharge for simple annuals? Imagine buying one standard zinnia plant for $6.29. It just doesn't seem right. $75 vs. $10 for 12 annuals .....hmmmmmm.... somethings just not right. read more

I recently bought a very large magnolia tree from Tangletown Gardens. While it was quite pricy, it is so beautiful in my garden! Some reviewers here are quite upset by the prices, and I get that, but the prices here aren't any higher compared to the other upscale garden centers around town. In terms of the magnolia I had purchased, it was obvious to me that they had taken great care to choose only the best quality tree to sell - a perfectly straight trunk with plentiful blooms. On top of that, two wonderful employees wrapped it so carefully and helped my husband get it into the car. It was a very busy Saturday morning and the place was packed with customers. They did not rush getting the wrapped tree into the car, but they took great care to angle it very carefully to ensure none of the branches would be damaged during the transportation. It was very hard work, and they had such a positive and friendly attitude throughout. I have also seen the quality landscaping job they have done on my neighbor's property, so I will be reaching out to them for some landscaping services as well. Overall, I am very impressed with the customer service as well as the unique offerings they sell (they were the only garden center in Minneapolis selling the 'Keiko" Itoh peony this season. WOW! Total lack of customer service. I bought 2 peonies a few weeks ago - turns out neither were what the tag said they would be. When I stopped back, both workers blamed customers for changing tags around. When I pointed out that the current tags were obviously wrong on every buckeye belle (clearly a completely different peony blooming than what was labeled) they were like, huh, but did not correct them (just left them). Then they suggested that I should buy the plant when they were blooming so I could see it. Really? ps. many of those plants aren't even going to bloom this year. Total disregard. One almost tried, the other just seemed irritated to leave his computer. Won't be back. read more

This place is fantastic! I have shopped here for three years now, and they have consistently had some of the healthiest, most beautiful plants that I have found in the region. They have quite a few unique plants that others don't stock, and their substantial full and partial shade zones allow them to provide varieties for diverse settings. I have no clue of who some of these earlier commentators dealt with -- I have had fine, helpful interactions with quite a few staff people, and have received useful advice from them. They grow their plants using sustainable methods. You won't find vast greenhouses here, so if all you want are thousands of identical petunias, this might not be your spot, but if you want interesting and vigorous plants, be sure to check them out. read more
