I've never actually shopped here, but I live nearby. The man that works there scares me because I've seen him cuss out multiple people on the streets. Today I saw him hit a guy that he was arguing with until the guy fell to the side of the street. I'm tired of his aggressive behavior. It makes me feel unsafe in this area. This store was extremely crowded to me making it difficult to really see the inventory. They have packed a lot in a small amount of space. The staff was nice and tried to be helpful but they couldn't find anything either. We eventually found what I was looking for. This was my first time coming here and it was a random visit. I agree with all of the other 1-star reviews. The old man that works there most of the time is nice on the surface when you are purchasing, but turns incredibly mean and verbally abusive very quickly. They are very overpriced, of course. They often leave trash outside on the sidewalk. One of their customers hit another vehicle that was in the clinic next-door for emergency medical assistance, and just drove off. They lied and said they did not have cameras. There are about 20 cameras inside. These are bad people profiting from mostly unsuspecting and unaware customers. read more

So first I have to say if it isn't an ABC it's going to be exceptionally hard to score higher than a 3-star review. Reasoning behind that is you can anticipate that the price for anything you are going to buy here to run @ a minimum of 1/3 higher than ABC. That being said this place isn't bad. They offer some things that you aren't going to be able to find at an ABC. For example they have a large selection of beer including some on tap. They offer growlers (for purchase) then you can bring them back and get them filled with your favorites. The selection here is good, but it is a very crowded store. They are good at carrying seasonal items as well as any of the whiskey, vodka, tequila, etc that you would be able to get at any other typical liquor store. I actually have only interacted with staff on one occasion and that's when I was checking out. So not positive how they are when it comes to getting growlers refilled or helping on the floor to find something if you need help. If I'm in the area I wouldn't hesitate to return here to grab something. Just expect to pay a few bucks more. read more

Upon walking into this store, you feel somewhat overwhelmed and excited seeing so much beer. Then when you walk into the liquor side, you'll get even more excited to see very rare bottles that you just don't see on the shelf at most stores. The joy starts and ends about there. The place wreaks of cigarette smoke. A decent number of craft IPA's they have are beyond dead, I'm wondering if people actually look at the dates on the bottom of cans? The best part? When inquiring of said rare bottles on the very very top shelf and you ask for the price, the guy working here *assuming the owner* has to pause for a minute to come up with a price. It took all of my being not to laugh at the price because it was an 800% mark up. Why bother with the aftermarket when you have business owners like this? read more

I'm a bar snob. I admit it. Blame it on Austin and my beer sensei, Q. It's a stone cold fact. So when my buddy Wes mentioned stopping by the Hookah Bar I was dubious. A hookah bar? In bham? He said there were fifty beers on tap and I thought, "Bring it buddy. Let's see what my old hometown can deliver." Consider me served. The entrance is in a back alley behind the old Western supermarket on Highland Ave on the Southside. No joke, this is the secret back entrance in the alley behind the liquor store. There were two bouncers and a security guard at the entrance so I'm going to assume it was all legal. There actually were 50 beers on tap. The taps aren't at the bar, they're in another room, but they show you a menu and will tell you about any new beers not on the list. I chose two local brews. Avondale Miss Fancy Triple - a crazy tasty 10.5% sweet little malty number on tap and Good People Snake Handler double IPA - a slightly hoppy 9% punch in a bottle. I'd stake Miss Fancy Triple with any of the malty favorites I've met in Austin honestly. So two thumbs up for the beer. I don't smoke either cigars or hookahs so I can't really say how I feel about that. Other people with hookahs seemed satisfied and my friends were happy they could smoke inside a bar. Love the atmosphere. Nice mellow old school jazz. Really casual but not divey. Comfy sofas. The people who work there are clearly happy with their jobs and eager to please. This is a seriously undiscovered gem in the ham. Don't spoil it, just enjoy it and make sure they stay in business till I can visit bham again. Thanks Wes! read more

I believe the owner of this package store is trying to set a record for having the most expansive inventory of booze ever assembled on planet Earth. From draft beers to bottles or cans, if you can't find what you're looking for here then I honestly don't know what to tell you. The wine and liquor selection is also quite substantial. Mixers, gift sets, a variety of interesting things on the front counter from corkscrews to bottle openers to lighters, cigarettes, etc...they've pretty much got it all. I've been coming and going from this place since they first opened the doors, and the staff remains the same. The owner is the quintessential friendly shop owner who has the most positive attitude and is always so friendly with everyone that it really makes the place stand out. If I just needed a pack of smokes and there were 3 places on the street to buy them, I'd buy them here just to pop in and say hi to this guy. They're also open late...so if you find that you're out of beer and running out of places that are open and selling it, then give them a shot. If its legal to be open and selling beer, then they usually are. What more could you ask from a package store? 5 stars. read more

Small place and hard to find parking. Behind its' packaged store in an alley and it was a $5 cover charge for a Saturday night. 6 of us went and ordered 4 hose hookah. Had 4 bud lights and 4 mic ultras and a glass of angry orchard all for $73. Sat down and waited for about 10 min before a waitress came over. Mind you that there were several empty seats in the house and the place is small. We were there for 1.5 hours and NOT ONCE after we got our pipe and drinks did a waitress come by to check on us. Tongs weren't provided to flip coals so we had to improvise and use their paper coasters. We had to get up and go to the bar and get our second round of drinks which I carried back to our table. Summary: something neat to try if you've haven't done so before but be prepared to bus your own tables and get your own drinks We left a 5.25 tip for the non-customer service at a bar/ lounge. read more

Tons of selections..... pretty much every flavor you can think of. Came here looking for cider boys blackberry cider but found out it is seasonal... still managed to pick up some blackberry cider to try out and a growler of angry orchard.. first growler i have ever purchased in the ham.. i will say on the liqueur side of the house they are a bit expensive thought. One of our favorite rum is the cruzan banana rum. The 750ml at an abc store runs about 11 bucks. Here at this place the exact same size runs 17.99... while i am all for the business making money... this to mee seemed a little steep... so i will continue to get the growler of orchard and stick to the abc store for anything harder. read more

Overpriced but open late!!! If you are downtown and need liquor before midnight this is the only place you can go that's not a bar. Some of the best local beers on tap and all the liquor you could ever need to make your drinks. Owner is super nice man and always remembers me when I come in. $7-10 more per bottle than the ABC store but they don't close at 7p! Highland package has been my go to for draft beer for quite some time. They have a large selection that they run specials on and change out frequently. You can buy kegs from them as well if you're having a party, etc. In addition to draft beer, they have a large bottled and canned beer selection. It's not so much organized by type, but it's fun to wander around and pick one out. Oh, and if you have something you want but don't see it there, they're good about trying to get it for you. Their liquor and wine selection is decent. A little pricier than some liquor stores, but they're really helpful if you're not quite sure what you need. Up front, they have some non-alcoholic beverages and food items like chips. Overall, I really love this place (and love that they're open on Sundays). The guys that run it are very friendly and super helpful, and I'm willing to pay a little more for that. read more

I love hookahs, so I had to try the "#1Hookah Bar in Birmingham". The hookah bar is located in a sketchy back alley, and once you find it, you are greeted by a security guard who demands a $5 cover charge. I have been to many hookah places; Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Russia, Italy, Texas, New York, and many more. In none of those hookah bars have I ever had to pay an entrance fee. So once I got ID'ed, paid the $5, and sat down, I sat there for approximately 20 minutes, waiting to order a hookah. Since nobody came to the table to take an order (only after I already ordered it somebody came and asked if I had been helped already), I finally got up and just walked to the owner (?) and ordered a hookah. It turns out they only have Starbuzz Shisha, which is unacceptable for a "#1 hookah bar", and since I am a huge Nakhla addict. So I ordered a hookah and had to pay $19.80 for a 1 person hookah, which is crazy, and it turned out, the price is far from being worth it, especially since you have to pay $1 for every coal. I got probably a 14 inch hookah (most reputable hookah bars will use at least a 22 inch hookah), which is somewhat small, so you won't be able to get much smoke, negatively impacting your quality of the smoke. They use the same hoses for all the flavors, so don't expect to only taste double apple when you order it, I could taste some strong mint flavor. The smoke was only good for about 5-10 minutes. So the coal burned up and they do not bring new coals at all. I walked over to the owner and asked for another one, and it turned out (as mentioned above) that each now coal costs one dollar. This is crazy especially since you aren't allowed to bring your own (you could buy a 10 pack for a dollar). Never had I ever been charged for new coals. And the most important thing: Instead of using all natural coal, such as Coco Nara, they use the cheaper self igniting version, which has a strong chemical taste. Self igniting coals have the benefit that they light up quickly, but they use chemicals to be able to do this, and the chemicals are very unhealthy and most hookah bars will not use self igniting coals since they have a bad aftertaste. So in the end I paid almost $30 for a less than mediocre experience: the music was too loud, the atmosphere not fitting for a hookah bar. I won't go there again and don't recommend it to anybody. The hookahs they use can be bought for cheap. So you can buy them yourself for less than $50. Just buy one online instead and invite your friends over. You save everybody a lot of time, money, and negative experiences... read more

If you are looking for the best beer selection in town, Highland Package is your place. There are so many options, I usually find myself pacing back and forth trying to decide what to get for much longer than I should. It all looks good! The store is divided down the middle with beer on the left and wine and liquor on the right. I mainly stick to the beer side. They have about 50 beers on tap which they sell in quart, half gallon and gallon sizes. The rest of the beer inventory is a hodge podge of six packs ranging from more affordable stuff to pricey imports and craft beer. Recently, the state law has changed so they've added 22 oz beers, furthering their already vast selection. The two owners are really nice and have worked hard to make Highland Package a stand out establishment. There is also a cigar & hookah bar, accessed from the back alley, operated by the same guys. A really cool, hidden locale in Birmingham. My only criticism is that finding a parking spot can be next to impossible. I usually have to park way down 11th Ct. read more

Although the Hookah bar has a great ambiance, the Hookah service is sub par. Upon arrival there is a cash cover and although I only had my credit card the staff was able to provide an ATM. Me and my small party ordered a two hose Hookah to ensure that we could enjoy smoking without having to share one hose, we noticed that the hoses were not working and the server did clear one of the two hoses. When the other guest in my party noticed the second hose was non functional, we alerted the server who proceeded to say that we would have to use our FINGER to cover the hose opening so that the other Hookah would function. At that point we should've left... that is an alarming display of poor customer service. The situation could've been handled more efficiently and professionally. read more

The selection is good, the beer on tap is awesome, the dog is cute. The guy behind the counter is nice but not very helpful. It's located near western's and a nice little Indian place. The prices seemed fair but not extraordinary. I particularly like the place because of the selection of beer on tap. Hop city is nice but they don't have American Light beer on tap like coors light. (Some people actually appreciate non craft beers on tap). This place has about 60 beers on tap. (Though some are empty when you go in) The issue I have with the place is the service. I came in yesterday and told the guy "I will be back tomorrow to fill my keg." Today I came back with a keg and he said "you have to come before 9 because that's when my guy leaves." He definitely should have told me that before I made the trip. I also don't know why he couldn't let me fill it myself after making the mistake. Even though my experience wasn't the best , I will return for the selection of beer on tap. If anyone knows a store that will sell me regular American light beers on tap by the gallon for a 5 gallon keg, let me know. This is a terrific place to stop for your drink. Always welcoming and with a great selection, what more could one ask? So the reviews on here that knock them for their price need to be addressed. It appears that many people on here don't understand the Alabama liquor situation and blame Highlands for their higher prices compared to the ABC stores. They have to buy from ABC. It's a state-held monopoly. Why begrudge them the markup? They wouldn't stay in business very long charging us what they pay. If you want the ABC price, go to ABC before they close in the evening. This place had everything. Options galore. The had flavors of JD I didn't know existed. Place was clean and owner was super friendly. At first I was skeptical...you do have to walk down the alley behind Hot and Hot - you'll know you've reached the door because they have lights strung above the door. Once you get inside, it's not a bad set up at all! There's seating along the walls of the place, chill music, a bar w some additional seating and cool decor. $10 hookah for happy hour till 6 pm? don't quote me on that! on Tues-Thurs. Staff is very helpful in recommending flavors - can't go wrong with grape and mint! It's not the biggest place so it does tend to get packed on the weekends later in the night - and the music does pick up. There's also several restaurants that deliver to this place! I have been to several hookah bars, so keep in mind that my review will be from the perspective of a hookah bar regular. When we walked in, the atmosphere seemed really nice. They had music playing (not too loud) with several low tables and chairs for enjoying your hookah and drinks. There was a smoke machine and lasers which gave it a bit of a weird vibe. A place with such a chill feel makes a small laser display seem very unnecessary, but it wasn't bad. We were charged a $5 cover which would have been fine had the hookah not been so overpriced. A regular one-hose hookah was $18, but they charge $1 for every coal. For those who don't smoke hookah, a normal bowl of sheesha will last for 7-8 coals depending on how you smoke. The average price I've seen elsewhere is around $11 per hookah with no surcharge for coals. The idea seemed a bit ridiculous. Then there was the service. On a Friday night, they seemed understaffed, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. We waited about 15 minutes for a server to take our hookah and drink order. The hookah came out pretty quickly, but when a coal died, it took FOREVER to get a new coal. The atmosphere allowed us to make new friends at the table around us, but we were interrupted several times by having to hunt down a server to take care of our hookah or bring more drinks. Overall, I'd say this place is WAY overpriced. We paid $52 for one hookah and 2 drinks (both well). If you're a hookah fan, hit up the package store attached to the bar and just buy a hookah and the necessary materials. It will be more expensive at first, but you'll make money back quickly. $50 for ONE HOOKAH and two drinks is ridiculous if you're used to other establishments. read more

i have quite a few friends that enjoy hookah so this is a common spot for us to land after dinner. Personally, Im not a fan of hookah, but I always have a good time soicializing with friends over a good drink. Thats the problem, I have yet to get a good mixed drink from here. The atmospere is cool and laid back if your group is able to find a spot because its not a rather large lounge. I have learned to just stick with the bottled beer. read more

I love this place! It's the one of beer section I've found in town (besides Hop City). They have so much variety in bottles, cans, and on tap. You can get 4 different sizes of beer to take home from their taps. Little jugs to big growlers. They also have local tap beers that aren't getting canned yet. A little bit of a Birmingham staple, Highland Package Store is almost always open. Icy roads? Highland is open. Christmas holiday? You can still go to Highland Package and get your booze. They have a nice variety of liquor, wine and beer and will more than likely order whatever you might request. They also have a tap in the back so don't forget your growler! The cons of this store are horrible parking, high prices and long lines. They share a parking lot with two or three other stores which makes parking a pain. The prices are much higher compared to other package stores but I suppose them being open all the time makes up for that. There's almost always a wait because they only have one register that's operated by an older man that loves to talk. Do I like Highland Package? Yeah, it's great. Would I go out of my way to go there? No, if the ABC Store is open or another package store, I'm definitely going there. read more
