As far as neighborhood haunts go, this is one of the best ever. They have a solid rotation of daily specials, a lineup of roughly 30 beer taps focused on PNW beers, and all of the pool tables and TVs that one could ask for in a sports bar. The ambiance is locally focused and is one of those secrets that everyone knows about (in a good way). It's a little bit of a dive and as it is tucked away, the clientele loves it for what it is. The service is pretty good most of the time. My wife and I have been going for years during the college and NFL football seasons and have enjoyed their brunch and drink offerings. In the past, prior to the pandemic, they featured a wide ranging menu with many great options including their omelettes and scrambles. Since, the selections have diminished and the pricing has soared (perhaps like any other place) but at enough of a pace to alter our habits a bit. Mind you, it is still worth going. Taco Tuesday is ON POINT here~~ hands down the best tacos a Tuesday can offer. I've had tacos all over town and the Birria offerings far surpass most, if not (easily) all. The cooks have it down (there were 2 behind the scenes last week). The bartenders were super engaging and busy busting tail-- easily managing to keep up with all the drinkers, pool players and diners. Barkeep Michael greeted us the moment we walked up and kept us on our toes with his salty style of humor, sarcasm and sass. We felt very welcome and highly (happily) entertained and content. He made me the perfect $5 margarita, to boot. This was once a great place but the new management is horrible. Don't order the food, it used to be good pub food but the menu changed and the quality tanked. The nachos are just plain garbage. The servers are fine but many of the familiar faces that made it a fun place are gone. This was my go to pub in Eugene for a very long time but I'm done. read more

I note it has been 8 years since I last reviewed my neighborhood bar. Like all others, I suppose, it has gone downhill. Food is good to my limited taste, prices are ok but shrinkage has occurred. Night time service Is not very good and sometimes bad, bordering on really bad. Orders mixed up or missing, billings often mistaken, sometimes even in the customer's favor but not usually. I continue to go there because my friends can't agree on another place. But I always expect, good food, ok prices and not good service. My boyfriend and I love to head over to Highland's for good food, drinks, and fun games. Half the bar is "bar games" such as pool, darts, shuffleboard, ping pong, and foosball. Most of the games are free (except pool) and it makes the bar a great place to go casually, on a date, or with friends. I'm going to leave a five star review for this place since I believe it deserves it! We are always a group of at least fifteen people who gather at Highland's. I want to say that this bar has THE BEST bar tender, MIKE, in Eugene. He's so nice, funny and good at his job. You have a lot of options to entertain yourself such as playing pool, tennis, dart and foosball. The food is great. I only have one complain and it's why they've removed the Sun-dried Tomato Pasta from their menu. That was awesome. Please bring it back. My friends and I were all big fans of that dish. This place is great!! They have t.v.s in every booth and a good amount around the facility. I went here for a Oregon Duck football game vs the Washington Huskies. I left before halftime because they where getting blown out. While I was there I had the Down its 2 sliders it was delicious!! and got the fries for $1.00 extra. Highland's have pool tables, pingpong table and foosball, they also have darts too. I would recommend this place if you are wanting to have a good time or just wanting to come and have a beer they have a great selection. read more

We got a Groupon and decided to try it one night. The happy hour specials are $5 for all apps and $6 for apps with meat (I think)... anyway it was a pretty good happy hour. I didn't get drinks since I was driving but I watched them making them and they know how to make a drink! The location was clean. The bathroom was very clean, which I love.... There are pool tables, darts (I thought), dining area and lots of TVS. The Nachos were AWESOME -- 3 of us shared them. Plenty of meat and toppings. I got the BBQ Cobb salad. Holy mambos this was good. I would definitely go back for this salad. Dad got the Asian Chicken Salad and it was okay... the dressing was good. I would definitely say I got the prize salad though. Mom got the french dip type sandwich. The meat was a good portion and tender. The bread was correct and soft and there were onions and mushrooms (i believe) on it. The only complaint she had was that the au jus was packet. BUT it was good in my opinion. If you can get Michael (female pronounced just like the male name though) as your server DO IT... you won't regret it. She may have given the best service I have had in Eugene. HEALTH CODE CONCERNS: My partner I went to Highlands on a recommendation from a friend. In search for a low-key date night the restaurant/pub seemed to fit the build. The place had a cool enough vibe and we exchanged smalltalk with the bartender, Aaron or Adam. While sipping our drinks and paroozing the menu, however, we watched the same bartender pick his nose (and pardon the graphics here) not only with one finger, but TWO. Then, without washing his hands or fingers, take a drink order from another patron, pour and serve them their beverage. To make matters worse, the bartender had mentioned that he used to be a cook at Highlands. With such disturbing hygiene practices being conducted in the front establishment, one can only imagine the potential health code concerns happening behind the closed doors of the kitchen... Needless to say we will not be returning. read more

I suspect that I have graced the doorstep of this establishment for the last time. This is the neighborhood watering hole for me. Have during some seasons been there regularly. However, tonight the witch of a barkeep and her behavior toward me tells me that I will never grace this establishment again. Highland's is a perfect example of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. We walked in around 9pm on a Friday night and admittedly almost walked out when we didn't see a host, waiter, or any other people eating. Given the time and our lack of desire to find another option, we took a seat and were greeted shortly after by the bartender, who was apartment the only person working for the night (and therefore covering the fairly sizable bar and restaurant). Despite this fact, we received food and drinks as quickly as if we had been the only party there (a party of 6 with dietary restrictions). Impressive. The food itself was just what you'd expect - pretty good bar food, with a few extra options here and there. The menu was fairly large and while there weren't any strictly vegan options listed, I did find a few that seemed to be able to be modified. I ended up with a chicken teriyaki rice bowl minus the chicken (veggies, teriyaki, rice). The sauce was a little heavy for my liking, but between flavor, portion, and price, it was far better than I expected. After dinner, we hung around for the bar games scattered around the restaurant - pool, darts, ping pong, shuffle board, pinball, etc. and quickly understood the appeal of this local hangout. Haven't tried the food here, but this bar was a hidden treat in Eugene that I'm fortunate my friends have brought me to! Late night bartender was awesome - I appreciated the magic tricks. But even more than that, what's your bar game? Because they're more than likely to have it here for free. That's right, there's free pool, darts, foosball, Jenga, and even tic tac toe. It was very quiet when we came here late on a Friday night, but that was a nice touch - there's no competition for all the free games! Whe I'm in town to visit my mom, her house isn't too far away from the pub. So whenever it's football season, I'd come in to watch the Ducks games. The staff is pretty friendly but the price on the food menu is a little bit hefty for me. This place is atrocious. I came in for the first time tonight and was genuinely blown away by the poor service. The bartender was surly and rude, and I felt an incredibly unwelcoming vibe. As I was trying to cancel my tab I asked to pay in cash, but Mike the Bartender had already run my card. I grumbled about having asked to pay in cash, but Mike told me he hadn't yet authorized the charges and promptly ripped up both the merchant and customer receipts. I asked him if he was certain, as reversing charges often take several business days but Mike assured me that nothing would be deducted from my account . I paid for my tab with cash, tipping him 15%. Two hours after leaving the bar, I check my Citibank account and realize that the amount of my meal and drinks have been deducted from my account . I tried calling highlands back, and spoke to Mike the bartender, who was even more rude and impolite than before. He snapped at me, recognizing me by name and barked that there was no way that I could've been charged, and then hung up the phone. Talk about poor customer service. What a piece of shit. I've spoken to my bank and I'm reporting this place and the employee for fraud, I already had a bad vibe about him and really should've insisted for the receipt upon having paid him, for the second time, in cash. I can only believe that he thought I was drunk and assumed he would pocket the cash and turn in my credit card receipt to the till. If it was an honest mistake and the charges will be reversed, he still shouldn't have been such a douche bag to me on the phone. We'll see what happens. read more

This bar is definitely for those that like laid back bars where you can kick back and enjoy one another's company over good food and a pint. It's not a place that many college kids go to, and definitely not for people looking to dance all night. But for what it is, I give it five stars: DRINKS: affordable, wide selection, always fully stocked, strong (or if you request they can make it girly for ya), and even though they're strong it'll still taste pretty friggin good and goes down easy. I'm not a fan of weak drinks, so for fellow heavy drinkers, I highly recommend this place. BARTENDERS: friendly, very entertaining, and always paying attention to the needs of their customers. If you don't order an alcoholic drink they offer you everything else they've got to make sure you're not left high n dry. And above all else they are damn GOOD at what they do! Drinks are strong enough so you get your money's worth for sure, but they still taste great so you'll want another and another. Girly drinks are also very, very delicious. What I like is that if I can't decide what to drink, I just give them a brief description of what I'm feeling and they rattle off around 4 or 5 suggestions of drinks that I've never tried before! Big difference from campus bars where bartenders usually suggest maybe one other drink that they can think of, and it'll guaranteed be a common one. FOOD: I never expected my favorite place to grab breakfast to be at a bar.....If you're someone who likes their meats, eggs, and bread for breakfast, GO HERE!! They have to-die-for country fried steak and eggs. Thick cuts of beef steak, nice seasonings, and some pretty flavorful country sauce. Wide selection of omelets, all of which are served in large portions, not too dry but not too wet either; stuffed and savory indeed. That's just the breakfast though! Dinner is just as good, if not, BETTER. They've got the usual bar foods, but they also offer a very cheesy penne, lots of burgers and sandwiches that dudes seem to inhale cause they're so damn good. ENTERTAINMENT: So when drinking I hate sitting around and getting fuller and fuller and sleepier. Thankfully, this place has a bunch of activities to do with whoever you're hanging out with. Darts, 6 pool tables, skee ball, pinball, and ping pong. Pool tables are all kept in good condition. SPACE: we love watching ducks and blazers games here! Lots of tvs and chairs, lots of room to move around, and best of all LOTS of fans show up on game days! The walls are decorated in autographed sports jerseys, pictures, and gear praising this hidden gem of a pub. Seats and booths are cleaned and bussed constantly, and bathrooms are by far the cleanest and nicest smelling I've ever come across as far as bars go and college apartments go. Not ghetto at all and they always work! So overall Highlands is clean yet not fancy, still keeping that laid back, chill touch that a bar should have. Five stars babee, without a doubt. read more

I really like this place. It's nice and out of the way so an older crowd tends to gather there. It's mellow, easy-going, and I really like the bartenders. I LOVE their bathrooms. This actually becomes really important, especially when they are out drinking! The bartenders, especially the two sort-of shorter one, are really great. They make their drinks strong and for the most part are really fun to talk to (I hate when bartenders are grumpy or standoffish), Their food is good enough bar food.
