I volunteer for various organizations throughout the year and this is one of my favorites…read more Basically, you spend a full day out of your life to help build components of a homesite for Habitat for Humanity. They mainly use donated materials from construction companies that are of good quality with volunteers supplying the labor. The finished homes are inspected as any home would and are offered under a loan program that allows a family down on its luck to recover. In our recent event, I helped build a fence and frame a shed, shoveled and laid down gravel at the job site. The rest of the group laid down tiles and painted the walls in the house. The before and after in just one day was astonishing. It is a great exercise for the body and also for team building. To volunteer, you will need to sign up on their website and attend a short one hour safety orientation. Schedule the day you want online and just show up with appropriate gear (e.g. work boots, jeans, old shirt, gloves and some tools. They will provide a hard hat and some tools too for the job. I urge you to join the fight against poverty housing and homelessness. We can make a difference if we all chip in just a little bit!

Great volunteer opportunity for people of all ages…read more This warehouse is a food distribution center that is used to sort bulk food into family-sized portions. There are two large rooms where the work takes place and each can hold up to 60 volunteers (120 people total). The shifts are all 2 hours long with the first 30 minutes allowed for preparation activities like putting on hairnets and getting an introduction to the facility and the work. At that point, depending on whether the shift is full, you separate into two teams. On my most recent volunteer shift our group was working with oats. Once we were in the work room, each person chose a job. Some scooped oats into bags, others secured the bags closed with tape and put them in boxes, a few replenished oats for the teams, and a small set moved the bags of oats between the scooping table and the boxers. The 90 minutes of actual work time flew by very quickly as people got to know each other and got into a work rhythm. Upon completion of the work, we spent time cleaning the floors and tables and then took a group photo with a sign revealing how many meals we bagged. NW Harvest provides an organized, quick, and inspiring experience for volunteers and I highly recommend a visit.

Big props to the folks who work here everyday and enable all of us to make a difference! If you volunteer here, make sure you a arrive a little before the start of your shift so you can sign in and suit up (hair and beard nets provided). Make sure you wear closed toed shoes and bring a hair tie if you have long hair. Dress in layers as it can be cold or warm depending on the day and what you are doing. There are small lockers for free in the gathering room to store your belongings. You can volunteer by yourself or plan a group volunteer event. I've been volunteering on behalf of Boeing for a while now it's always a ton of fun! There is ample free parking as well in their lot.

A truly helpful and compassionate food bank experience…read more This food bank has been such a blessing. The volunteers are there to help you -- they genuinely listen to your dietary needs and preferences and do their best to meet them. They offer a wide variety of fresh and shelf-stable foods from different stores, all clearly labeled and easy to navigate. Their signs are clear about giving shoppers 15 minutes to choose items, which keeps things flowing smoothly and fair for everyone. One of the best parts is the variety -- sometimes you'll even find items from places like Uwajimaya or other Asian markets. It's such a wonderful surprise to experience new foods and flavors you might not have tried otherwise. Each visit feels a little like a culinary adventure. The staff and volunteers are kind, respectful, and supportive. They truly value your privacy and make sure everyone feels welcome. They're also great about helping minors -- while minors can't shop on their own for safety reasons, the staff will still make sure they receive a full month's worth of food support if that's what they're seeking. If you call ahead, my suggestion is to have all your information ready -- just the facts, ma'am! It helps them answer your questions quickly so they can assist the next person in line.

People are coming to you in need and you treat them like garbage. Not very Christ-like behavior from the so called "Christians" that run this place. We come here because we need to. We already feel horrible due to our situation. The last thing we need is someone looking down on us and treating us like crap because of it. Do better if not for your own beliefs. I was in a pretty helpless position as I was not due to be home for several days. My son came up with a great idea and checked online to see if our dog had been found and turned in to the RASKC. Sure enough, she was there. My wife went down the next morning, paid the fee and picked her up. She had been well treated, and we are very thankful that they found her and gave her a good safe place until we could come get her. My son said that she was so excited to see him. She cried and whined, and fell asleep in his arms in the car. Thank you very much

I intend this to be constructive: please fix your system!…read more 1. volunteers: please let the volunteers try to get through the system once so they understand the user experience and understand the waitlist app and how it looks, what the user sees, and how it calls us. everyone should have to do this. today i was treated rudely (like a scam artist or something) by volunteers while i was doing precisely what i was told to do by the waitlist and the front desk. 2. the waitlist app: the waitlist app is absolutely and totally broken. I waited through a list of 8 people and when I got to the top i was randomly dropped to number 5 again. I waited again. the third time i was at the top, I went to the adoption center they said my name was nowhere on the list at all. it went on and on! I was there for 2 hours of this. I know that you are underfunded but really--why is this so bizarrely inept and broken? Just make a PAPER LIST and call us, like a restaurant hostess would do. We didn't adopt, but we will from a good organization. And the place we adopt from will also receive our donation money.
