We've lived in Texas for several years and this was one of the most fun things we have ever done!…read moreIt was my oldest bday and she loves knives. We walked in and they had a cancellation. Jay was absolutely amazing and so patient. Her knife took about 2 hrs to make and we had such a great time it felt like 20 minutes. He had great stories and kept us engaged. He communicated clearly with rules, expectations, and what each step was that she had to work on next. He had us laughing so much. Vic was another brother that was great. He kept my youngest, 9 yr old, engaged and had her complete attention. He was patient and helped her stand correctly and how to hold the hammer. And he had to repeat himself many times but never lost patience with her. He showed us how to make different nail swords and let her help too. This is a family business and honestly it is a must for any visitors, tourist, or even Texans that never see what's around them (like us!). I totally recommend bringing your family or friends. We won't regret it and you'll go home with a unique gift that you made yourself.

The two gentlemen who ran the shop were friendly, knowledgeable, and made the entire experience enjoyable. Building our own knives was an incredible value, and it was easily the best of our visit. The outdoor workshop where everything took place was clean, well organized, and created a hands-on experience. I was a little nervous at first, but once we got into the shop, listened to the instructor , and received all the safety instructions. Zeus was an awesome instructor, I felt completely comfortable. Everything was explained clearly, and the process went smoothly. I highly recommend checking this place out, whether you're looking to purchase a quality knife or build your own. It's a unique experience that I would gladly come and do again!

10/10 would recommend! What a fantastic experience. I literally started with block of metal and…read morewas walked through the entire process of forging a knife by hand. I was given enough steel to build pretty much whatever I wanted and got to pick whatever kind of material I wanted to use on the handle. As long as I picked a design I could finish in the 2 days I spent there, Chad was there to help me build what I wanted to build. Not only that, but this ends up a legit, strong, properly heat treated knife. He had me drop my knife tip first into cement, and then smash it into a concrete block multiple times to test the heat treating process... No real damage... try doing that with your store bought knife! He provided all the drinks and food for us all while we were there, and he didn't cheap out. He got really good food from restaurants in the area. We also had full access to his pool and hot tub, which was a welcome way to cool down after a day standing in front of a forge. Not only did I build a super cool knife, but the Caylor family welcomed me into their home and I immediately felt like I was a part of their family. The money you spend here goes straight to funding their non-profit, Reforged, which helps military and first responders that are suffering from PTSD. So not only do you get an awesome experience, but the money you are spending goes toward a good cause. For real though, this place is amazing. I'll be back.

As meticulous as I try to be about keeping my knives sharp, they have dulled over the years…read more Therefore, I thought it best to seek a professional, local blade sharpener. After doing a quick Internet search, I discovered several options in the San Antonio area, including T.O.O. (Texas Outdoor Organizers) Knife & Tool Service, a service near Vance Jackson and Huebner Road (phone number 210-691-3330), Diamond Knife and Shear, Star Knife Sharpening, and Alamo Blade Sharpening. Many of these providers offer mobile and/or mail-in service. I wanted to get same-day service, so I called around and set up an appointment with Alamo Blade Sharpening in New Braunfels. Ernie Freeland, and his wife Debbie, own Alamo Blade Sharpening. Ernie works out of his mobile unit, but I caught him at his home for an appointment. I dropped off my collection of 5 knives, including a serrated bread knife, and a pair of shears, and they were done and sharpened within half an hour. Ernie is friendly and does good work. My 6 knives were restored to optimum sharpness and it only set me back about $40. I must point out that Ernie charges by length of blade, so the cost of sharpening is different for each knife and shear. In addition to kitchen knives, Ernie also sharpens hunting knives, clipper blades, various kinds of scissors (including surgical, and upholstery), hedge clippers/pruning shears, and chain saws. Just remember to take cash if your total price will be less than $10 because Ernie has a $10 minimum when using a credit card.
