The beds were comfortable and the rooms had a mini fridge and microwave. The manager was a really nice lady who did everything she could to make sure our stay was enjoyable. She lives on the property and is very helpful. She did say that the company had just been purchased the motel from a family by a major corporation. The rooms are fixing to get a hotel industrial upgrade. I hope this means the price stays cheap!

We had trouble finding either a park that fit our 43 ft class A or no spots due to a few days before the 4th of July. We stayed ten days, got a 10% military discount which is the same as the Good Sams. The sites are all long so you don't need to double park and there's ample room between neighbors. The office, laundry, bathrooms and grounds are clean. We did not use the dog wash but several people did and said they were glad it was there. (We have a cat) We visited Chamberlain about 45 minutes West. It has a cute town to shop, eat or talk to the locals. Friday nights there's live outdoor entertainment and food trucks. Mitchell is a half hour East where there's a Walmart and a local grocery store. Kimball is about 20 minutes West with a tiny town, friendly locals and a great Vet at Countryside Veterinarian. We took our cat for his annual rabies shot and she only charged for the shot not an office visit too. Managers Mary and Steve are hospitable, and always available. They work hard keeping everyone as happy as possible! Great customer service! We definitely would go back if we are on I90 at White Lake.

Site #26 is also pretty nice, and is a pull thru site with full hook-ups. Showers and restrooms are pretty darn clean for a city run campground. Dog friendly, and there are plenty of trails to walk your furry pal on. No cable, but Mitchell does get 3 local channels via antenna, and it's so pretty here you're not going to watch much tv anyway. WARNING (and why this review is only 4 stars): If you're looking to stay here to enjoy the lake, forget it. The lake is pretty gross and full of blue-green algae, so DON'T plan on swimming. Or leting your kids swim. Or letting your dog anywhere near it. If your only interested in the view, the trees, and a nice quiet place to chill out, it's still worth it, IMHO.

There was a list available to see which sites were reserved, though it was a tad confusing because it wasn't in what we thought was a logical order. But we found a site without any neighbors and got set up rather quickly. If I remember right we paid about $30 for our electric post site. The campground was pretty quiet despite being just off the business loop and on the lake during a holiday weekend. The next morning we had to pack up right away, but not before my daughter enjoyed a hot shower in "the cleanest campground shower ever" (she's 14, so picky) and we got ready for the day in the *very* clean bathroom. This was very much appreciated after two weeks camping on BLM land with only a pit toilet available! We spoke briefly with the owner who told us she's managed it for the city for just a couple years and is still working on upgrades, but I thought the bathrooms were great as is. We were very satisfied, and if we could have stayed longer we would have made use of the lake and playground.

When I booked our reservation at Mitchell KOA Journey on May 3, I never imagined it would become…read morethe most disappointing stop on our family's cross-country relocation. We were moving our family from Washington State across the country with a 42-foot fifth wheel, an SUV towing a cargo trailer, two tween children, three cats, a dog, a hamster, a gecko, and my elderly in-laws traveling separately with their own dog. We weren't on vacation--we were relocating our lives. Unfortunately, almost nothing about the trip went according to plan. High winds, health concerns, and vehicle problems forced repeated route changes. At one point, our SUV broke down 110 miles east of Rapid City, resulting in a $700 tow bill and several unexpected days of repairs. Throughout these delays, I remained in close contact with Mitchell KOA, calling multiple times to cancel, reschedule, and provide updates. I was transparent about our situation, our extra vehicle and trailer, and the challenges we were facing. Through all of it, the KOA community was incredible. From Montana to Wyoming and throughout South Dakota, every KOA owner, volunteer, and staff member we encountered treated us with patience, kindness, and understanding. As newcomers to RV life, we made mistakes, asked questions, and occasionally arrived after hours. Every campground we visited approached us with a spirit of hospitality and a willingness to help. By the time we arrived in Mitchell, we expected more of the same. Instead, we experienced the opposite. We arrived after office hours following another long day on the road. Tired and stressed, we were simply trying to get parked and settled safely for the night. Because of the campground layout and the size of our rig, we initially entered from the wrong direction. Rather than attempting a difficult backup maneuver, we safely circled around to reposition ourselves. Once at our site, we began setting up. One of our leveling jacks lost its foot during the trip, requiring us to manually level the RV before extending the slides. While my husband handled setup, I temporarily parked our SUV and cargo trailer while unloading pets and essentials before moving the vehicle. ~30/45 minutes later, a woman approached us and informed us our vehicle was blocking another guest. The moment I understood there was an issue, I immediately apologized and moved the vehicle. Had the interaction ended there, this review would not exist. Instead, what followed left us feeling humiliated and unwelcome. My husband and I repeatedly apologized and explained our situation. What surprised us most was being told that management had been watching us. If that was the case, I don't understand why no one came out sooner to offer guidance. A simple conversation when we arrived could have prevented the entire situation. When I explained I had disclosed our extra vehicle and spoken with the campground multiple times during our travel delays, I was told I had not. I eventually pulled up my call history and emails showing communications, only to discover they had been with the very person insisting they never happened. By this point, I was in tears. Not because we had been asked to move a vehicle or because we had made mistakes, but because after weeks of setbacks, breakdowns, unexpected expenses, exhausted kids, anxious pets, and the stress of relocating our entire lives, we encountered the first person on our journey who seemed unwilling to extend even a small amount of grace. Eventually, her husband stepped in. To his credit, he immediately de-escalated the situation. He listened, calmly explained where the vehicle could be parked, and treated us like people rather than problems. Within minutes, the issue was resolved. Looking back, I fully acknowledge we made mistakes. We drove where we shouldn't have, parked where we shouldn't have, and inconvenienced another guest. For that, we sincerely apologize. But hospitality is often measured not by how people are treated when everything goes perfectly, but by how they are treated when things don't. Every other KOA we visited demonstrated patience, kindness, and a willingness to help a struggling family navigate unfamiliar circumstances. Mitchell KOA was the one exception. We are deeply grateful for the many wonderful KOA owners, volunteers, and staff members who helped us throughout our journey. Unfortunately, our experience at Mitchell KOA left us feeling embarrassed, unwelcome, and disappointed. We sincerely hope future travelers--especially families navigating difficult circumstances--are met with the same patience, understanding, and grace that we were fortunate enough to receive everywhere else.

However, I feel like this location does not meet the standards of a KOA. To be fair to the owners though, the location suffered major flooding last year. Looking at pictures online, it was far better before the flood, but the owners seem to be doing all they can to make the place fully operational again. Because of Covid guidelines, the laundry room was closed, but this is no fault of the facility. Also, when the reservation was made, the employee warned us that that got lots of rain the night before and the place was soaked, so this would explain all of the standing water. The sites themselves were fine. They were fairly spacious pull throughs that were almost perfectly level. Standard 20/30/50 amps were available. The place has a slight bug problem, probably due to its low elevation in respect to the surroundings. However, we were told that the camp store closed at 8, but it actually closed at 7, so that's a shame. Where this KOA loses stars is the fact that a campsite was over $60 a night. This is unacceptable given the condition, but once again, I understand that the owners likely need revenue to rebuild. Overall, this is adequate for an overnight stay. However, I suggest going elsewhere if you value scenery and amenities.

Owner, Matt Evans, is coward who will take all your money, but refuses to communicate to paying customers on their second homes. Free WIFI is a joke. He advertised as Fast Free WIFI, but when anyone would message him regarding it not working, he refused to answer. I believe his advertisement now is that the pool is arriving soon. You will have a better chance seeing pigs fly before that happens. And don't bother asking for an update on the pool or WIFI or you will be fined $20.00.  He attempted an inflatable waterslide in leu of no pool. This thing was up maybe 3 times throughout the whole summer. Not to mention it was sitting on a pile of weeds and cockleburs. These poor kids had miserable pain after this awesome waterslide!! The playground is basically a land of misfit parts. It's about halfway put together and the other parts have been laying on a piece of plywood along with screws, nuts & bolts for kids to eat or just throw around for fun! My 3-year-old had a blast throwing them all over every weekend!  And the turf that I assume is supposed to be under it, is still rolled up. Not sure why he doesn't just finish that project? I can confirm when I pulled my camper out of there on Oct 13th, it still was in this same condition. He has zero follow through on things. He has an event center that is locked most of the time and the vending machines eat your money. We had the camp manager tell my husband that he doesn't need to be nice to anyone. I texted Matt Evans asking him to call me when it worked for him because I wanted to discuss his camp managers behavior. I didn't want to text or email because tones can get lost, and I wanted him to hear the whole story. He wouldn't respond back to me, I resent the message a time or two and he finally responded to me stating all non-emergency comments must be submitted by email and he doesn't have time to talk to campers. I reminded him that I did not ask him to call me right now, I asked him to call me when he had a chance. I ended up emailing him and I was then advised text/emails/calls are not allowed, and if we did, we would be fined $20.00. Communication is the KEY to running a successful business. I know several people who really didn't care about the pool or WIFI, it was the fact that he responded in such a way or lack of, when people did ask. He obviously needs to hire some sort of HR person to handle his calls/text and emails because he has zero social and communication skills. He continually threatened people with fines for all sorts of random things. Oh, and he also charges more than the electrical company does for electric. He is only in this for the money, not to build a community for people to camp. I could go on and on with more detail, but campers reading this, PLEASE do you research and do not give this man any of your money. I do expect him to comment on this post and turn it around and how it's our fault blah blah blah...If anyone wants proof of his horrible ways of talking to people, please feel free to email me.
