I used to go to this church. I thought I was in a safe, supportive family of believers. I served most Sundays with all my heart with all my own expense. Then my friends who helped start the church in 2014 all started disappearing from the gatherings - they stepped down from leadership or went to other churches. I asked what happened, but my team "leaders" just told me to keep my head down serving the church and let God take care of the people. Then the heartbreaking stories started coming out from my friends who left - they all felt used and abused. Then brave victims of similar abuse from Hillsong College and various global campuses came forward. Not just a few cases, but HUNDREDS. When I took a break in winter 2019 around when the testimonies came out and saw Hillsong LA did nothing, I never came back. I'll make it really simple: Hillsong LA is a church cult. They believe protecting the institution over the people. No wonder they lost 90% their founding members (the remaining 10% have zero conscience for abuse), lost their venue in downtown LA and resort to a studio northeast LA, and if they have not careful, will lose a lot more because of lies and covering up their sins. God help this place. I tried this church because I love their recorded music. Hillsong the praise team is delightful. Hillsong in the middle of LA will take some getting used to. Very young congregation. 40 and older? You can still attend...just be very secure about everyone looking like toddlers. The music was uncomfortably loud...and I was standing in the back. Stay away from the light...Do not attend if you're sensitive to strobe lights or have a seizure disorder. The folding chairs are physically uncomfortable. I fell asleep on the message therefore I can't rate that. Will return to try again. I'm hoping my second vudit will wow me. I NEED it do well. It's only a couple blocks from my home. It sure would be nice to simply walk to church. I'd be able to attend midweek services and Bible studies for once. read more

I came to this place pretty much because of my friend during my short staying in LA, and I must say after my 1 hour of Sunday session, I see church differently. First of all, I don't have certain religion, so coming here pretty much expect a regular Christian church format where the priest talk through the whole session about bible and sing some songs in the end. But my friend been telling us about how different it is, and sure enough, as soon as we got in, first of all, this "church" is in a concert hall, which most performers at the stage looks really young. The young "priest" as I should call him, briefly talked about the message of the week for 15 minutes . Afterward, it was straight up 40 mins singing follow along. And it was amazing how great they sang! As it almost felt like I was in a concert. Even tho religious is something that coming within and you have to believe and coming from yourself, but music is transparent and no matter what religion you are, you can always feel the spirt and the message that it's trying to deliver. Whether you are religious or not, i highly recommend it ! Hillsong LA is part of the Hillsong churches that are all around the world (also associated with Hillsong the band, Hillsong United). They just started this summer and have decided to settle down in LA for a new location! LOCATION: Services are at the Belasco Theatre at 11AM, 5:30PM, and 8PM. PARKING: Metered street parking is around, but the meters are free on Sundays! It can be hard to find, but there's also cheaper valet parkings a couple blocks away from the Belasco Theatre. On Hill Street, there's annoying valet workers who walk out into the road, waving their flags, trying to get you to come valet with them. The one right next to Belasco charges $20 even though it's advertised for $3... sooo lame. When I asked them about it, they said it's $3 per 15 minutes or whatever... in the tiny lettering. Stupid! ENVIRONMENT: The greeters are so welcoming and genuine, I love walking in and out the doors. They have large banners at the front of Belasco theatre saying, "Welcome Home", and it really does feel like home! If you get there early before they open the doors, you'll have to wait in line, but there's always friendly people who will want around a strike up conversations which is so refreshing. OVERALL: It's a large church but they have mid-weeks in different locations throughout the week so you can get to know people which is nice! The pastor is great and worship is of course awesome! I have intermittently visited this world renowned church for a few years now... And everything has become watered down and diluted, from the worship to the message. It took an HOUR of announcements and 2 worship songs broken into pieces before getting to the message. Really an hour of announcements? By the time the announcements were done, I was mentally checked out. Worship has become a show, a mere performance for man and self glory than a true act of worship, and it's a turn off. No matter how good you are, without the Lord it is futile. I don't have contacts within this church, so I make this observation from an objective stand point that they read this review and can grow from it because it's all truly heart breaking. The message was 15-20 minutes maybe 25 minutes long and it was astonishingly superficial. How is it that the announcements took longer than the message???! It felt like they were trying to hard to make a comedy show with their interactions with the audience, trying too hard to conform to the masses. In the Word, it says, "Do not conform to the patterns of this world." But Hillsong is trying too hard to be cool and conform to this worlds culture. No wonder their numbers are going down. It used to be hard to get a spot even to stand. Now, lays masses of empty seats. As for the message, you don't need gratification from the audience to continue speaking, just deliver the message God has given you. Speakers were trying too hard to obtain a response from the audience. If the message was power, the audience would automatically respond. Constantly fishing for a response made the message dry, and that's how you know it's not led by the Spirit but by man's desire. The message for the offering was more spirit led in those few minutes than the message. In the end, during the end of worship they incorporated a secular song into worship!!!!! What in the world is going on? I couldn't believe it... what is going on? Really? I write this review in hopes it would be taken as light of as constructive criticism to build on because I think they are slighting away their focus away from Jesus and into their self glory because of their fame. Went for the first time this last Sunday and I left with such a bad taste in my mouth about church. The worship was okay but the way everyone gathered around the stage and cheered as the worship team came up was now about the performers being stars then actually worshipping. The message was so pointless also every sentence out of the pastors mouth the first two rows were screaming and "hyping" him up. Is this church? This is really a dynamic church that is affiliated with the world renown Hillsong Church based in Sydney, Australia. They are currently holding their services in the Belasco Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. I've never been to the Belasco before so it was a good opportunity to be able to see the ornate architectured ceiling inside. It's a dance club at night so it makes it interesting. Hillsong was made internationally known for their Sydney worship team that had put out many worship albums and so worship teams in churches all over the world would play and still play their music during their service. The music here is great too and they had just put out a new album recently which I intend to purchase at my first opportunity. The church welcoming committee is really cool. It seems all the volunteers greet you with a warm smile, wave or handshake which makes you feel really welcome and loved. The message was very good and something I've been looking for, for a really, really long time. It was both encouraging and thought provoking. Parking is $5 in the multiple lots adjacent and across the street. They have services at 11 am, 5:30 pm and another one at 8 pm. I'm told the 11 am and 5:30 pm services both share the same messages but the message for the 8 pm service is different. They have mid week services at four different locations around town such as DTLA, Hollywood, Orange County and Glendale. You can get the exact locations by sending them an email on their website. If you visit here or start attending, I truly believe your life will be changed for the better. I'm so thankful I felt lead to come visit today. Was considering going to this church until I read this: Hillsong Church Statement by Senior Pastor Brian Houston August 2015 I wish to correct reports that Hillsong church has "an openly gay couple directing a choir" at our New York City campus. Hillsong's position on homosexuality and gay marriage has not changed and is consistent with Scripture. As I have stated previously, I believe the writings of Paul are clear on this subject. Several months ago when one of our choir directors made an unexpected public statement regarding his engagement to a man who sometimes sang in the choir, it was a complete surprise to us as well. It is my understanding that they have not been involved in an active leadership or ministry role since. That said, we still love them and acknowledge that they - like all of us - are on a journey, and our role as a church is to assist them on this journey with grace and compassion. I will also remove Hillsong from my Pandora playlist as well as encourage my family members and friends to do so. We need to fill our hearts/souls with spiritual food; not food made from tolerance. I have yet to find that word in the bible. That said ... I will keep looking for an actual CHRISTIAN CHURCH that preaches love of ALL in an unconditional and nonjudgemental way. So I went to the 10 am service on Sunday. I wasn't 100% sure what to expect from a Hillsong church, besides maybe some great worship. It did not disappoint. The vibe is energetic & welcoming. There's a line to get in because it's so popular, but it's not bad & a great way to meet new people. The greeters are especially friendly & happy to answer any questions or just chat. The church meets in the Belasco club, so it's dark. The stage lighting is bright & reminiscent of a concert. There's enough space for all the people. We came a little late, so we had to sit in the balcony. I didn't feel too disconnected though. The worship was truly incredible, loud, spirit-filled, & fun. Just what you'd expect from Hillsong. They play all Hillsong music as well. The message was comedic, convicting, & biblical. It wasn't long either. I'm very big in social justice & they showed a video about homeless ministry the church is doing in LA. That sold me. It's not just Hillsong being a popular church in the city, they're really being good neighbors & stewards. The crowd is definitely younger & it's a large church, but I feel like I saw enough people from different walks of life. I'm not sure on the parking situation as I took the bus, but I definitely recommend taking public transportation if possible. read more

I've been calling this place home church for over a year and a half, and I've been on the volunteer team for almost 3 months now. Honestly it's my favorite church so far. The people are genuinely sweet, caring and loving. They carry a heart of gold to love you as you are and love you as Christ loves us. Hillsong now has a history of over 30 years now and has locations in 19 countries, 80+ cities (campus). It's just amazing to think that it all started with a faithful couple. Hillsong LA's home pastor Ben and Lucile are the most inspiring and spiritual leaders. The worship team is also the best. I appreciate how they make it about God and jo Jing else. It's really not easy to find a church with amazing music and great, biblical sermon. The parking is $5 right next to Belasco, sometimes they have it in the Orphum theater, but both places are close to each other within 5 min walking distance. read more

I have been coming here for five months now and I love it. They have a heart for Jesus and it shows in the way they serve. I noticed that some of the average or below-average ratings on Yelp have nothing to do with Jesus, but about how comfortable the chairs are or how bright the light is. I wish for those people to visit countries where praising Jesus can get one thrown in prison or killed. We are so fortunate to have the privileges we have here in LA, and Hillsong is doing their best to be great stewards of it. I see it in their passion for God. Parking was easy ($5 across the street). Nice people greeting us all the way in. The theater is hard to figure out where to go and has some poor sight lines. Great music. A lot of love for the Lord and energy. The songs were unfamiliar, even though I regularly go to contemporary worship services. Here's the real concern. The lead pastor started off the message on a VERY troubling note. He admitted he was sleep deprived (new baby) so that explains the mistake he made when he claimed Judas was the brother of Jesus. I'm sure he meant James although there is New Testament to another Judas who could have been a brother of Jesus. If that's what he meant then it was correct but obscure. What was NOT a slip was when he started the message with the wrongheaded secular notion that some people in certain races are more culpable for sin than people in other races. This is NOT biblical. He stammered when he said it and had to read directly from his notes to cover his discomfort with this heresy. He did not (and could not) cite to any Bible verse that supports the canard that white people should feel guilty more than other races or that only whites can be racist. This is nonsense and only serves to drive a wedge between the races. This is not the message of Jesus. Thankfully, he changed direction and spent the remainder of his sermon on the need for compassion to prevail. That message is certainly biblical and was well supported by his passion and reference to the New Testament. If this Pastor makes a habit of adopting the secular and divisive rhetoric of the political world, he will only make things worse and push people away from the Good News that we're all equally sinners and all equally in need of salvation. read more

I had to report on a new experience for work, and I decided to share about my visit to Hillsong LA. Here's the play by play. Please enjoy! 9:40 AM - Waiting for the Big Blue Bus on Ocean Ave. Awesome day out. Have my two singles ready. Dressed in white jeans and dressy Ferragamos. Feet are killing. Ugh. 10AM - There's one other guy on the bus. What if he's going to Hillsong too? 1020 AM - Arrive at Olive and Olympic. The other guy gets off, and I follow him to The Mayan Theater AKA Hillsong! What are the odds? 1025 AM - In line waiting to get in. Already around 50 people are here for the 11AM service. Really nice people in line. Light convo here and there. I'm all smiles. Side note: Downtown is a completely different beast from Santa Monica. 1032 AM - Hillsong volunteers have been unleashed to the line to make us feel like we're not strangers. All very nice people, except for the one guy who tried to sell the fact Justin Bieber attended a service. I'm sorry, but of all people in the world, JB is the last person I'd brag to me about. 1033 AM - Thinking about why Justin Bieber is even relevant. I mean, is he still recording? I only hear of his reckless attitude in public. Ugh. 1034 AM - More light convo with line volunteers. Cheers. 1035 AM - Checked out the food truck which is parked right in front of the theater. Nothing to be seen here, folks. 1045 AM - Doors. Yay! Feet are killing. The lobby greets you with a merch table, and another table where you can officially sign up and join. More people greet you and shake hands. I wish I'd brought my hand sanitizer. Next time. 1046 AM - I find a prime seat, and sit myself down. I take a moment to admire this majestic theater/former night club. I can almost smell the hairspray from the good ol' days. 1059 AM - Music is pumping. The lighting is dramatic. Expectations are rising. A heart warming video is played for a few minutes, featuring some of Hillsong United's music. 1105 AM - The band heats up, and the assembly is on their feet. 1120 AM - We're about 15 minutes into high-octane praise music. The music is awesome, but all these songs are starting to sound the same. Still digging it, but if Justin Bieber hops on stage, I AM LEAVING. 1130 AM - These Ferragamos are KILLING ME! The lyrics are projected on a screen, so I can mouth the words to make it look like I'm actually participating. Yay me! 1135 AM - At last we sit for a few announcements, an invitation to attend a mid-week event, the opportunity to give money, say some prayers for some church members, and hear the introduction of Reed, who will be preaching his message this morning. 1140 AM - And, OMG, we're on our feet again. Ugh. Don't tell me. Another praise song? 1145 AM - Reed comes out, and he's impossibly cool (but not in a slick way). He's pushing 30, and is wearing what looks like a J Crew outfit. He speaks about this being a new year, and that he's not going to just give us a typical New Year sermon, and that we're going to get more from him, and that we're going to leave here changed. You hear that world? I'm going to leave here changed. I'm into it. Reed oftentimes refers to scripture, and voila - it's on the screen. 12PM - Love it when Reed is in the middle of saying something, and a guy upstairs is encouraging him by saying, "C'mon!" 1210 PM - When Reed says "Amen?" the rest of us answer "Amen!" I'm waiting for someone to shout "Hallelujia!" 1215 PM - The last few minutes of Reed's sermon is kind of disjointed, but he's trying to exit his set with grace. He invites everyone to close their eyes, and bow their heads. And, now we're asked to raise our hands. I don't do any of that, but I see others aren't either. 1220 PM - And, that's a wrap for Reed. Someone comes out thanking Reed, and the band is on one last time. I'm feeling good! Here's my lasting impression of today: As far as preachers go, Reed is alright. No, he's not the most eloquent or the most sophisticated guy you could hear from. He plays it kind of safe, and definitely will appeal to a large number of people, especially young people. His message is basic; but in a church, what more do you need? I was hoping to hear the same dynamism as Carl Lentz (the pastor of Hillsong in New York), but Reed is so young. And, how can a guy this young tap into life the same way Lentz does? I don't think I can expect him to. But Reed doesn't bite off more than he can chew, and what he does is fine. Not great, but fine. Reed is only a small part of what Hillsong is about, I believe. Hillsong is a movement of people, who choose to get together weekly, then go and try to live their Christian lives. And, in a time when organized religion is so harshly criticized, Hillsong meets their peoples needs, or at least they try their best to. read more

I'm very happy with this church. Worship is the make it or break it for me with a church and since the worship here is so awesome Ive stayed. They do a totally if probably 6 songs a service and it's moving. I can feel the presence of God and it's a spiritual time for me. The preaching is good. It seems to always be someone different. I'm happy there though. Get involved in a small group or serve. It's really the only way to connect but once you start connecting it's amazing. read more

My reviews are far and few between because I choose only to comment on the places that have really impacted my life or the way I experience something. As of this review I still consider myself new to church and Christianity. Many people know about God, but they miss the blessing of knowing Him personally. I was one of those people for a really long time. A friend of mine recommended I check out Hillsong so I went one Sunday not really sure what to expect or if I'd even like going. Without a doubt that first step, that first leap of faith was life changing. I found so many things because I decided I'd give it a shot. I found real friendship, a loving community of people, an encouraging family, and a home. And above all I found Jesus. Hillsong LA is an incredible way to experience worship and the word of God. The pastors are incredibly warm, well-spoken, and personable. They even poke fun at themselves for their Aussie accents and habits! It's human and it's fun. Every week I try and sit next to someone I haven't met before and always end up meeting a new friend. This Church is a healthy, thriving example of God's kingdom on earth. The culture at Hillsong is fun-loving and wonderful. The people are warm and bright. I used to look forward to Fridays and the start of the weekend but now my weeks begin on Sunday. Why does a church have an hour of announcements? The service starts at 12, worship should be 10-12 minutes long, announcements should be 5 minutes tops and you're out of there at 1. I'm mentally checked out after an hour of sitting their wondering why I even came. My boyfriend and I walked out at 12:50 last Sunday and announcements were still going. It's so disappointing. Yes!!!! The Lord saved me through Echoes of Faith church in Ontario, CA (though recently relocated) and for many years Ive been going to Echoes of Faith, I tried other churches, but the presence of God was mighty in EOF so I never went anywhere else. I also pretty much left it to God, He led me there and He will lead me out if the time comes where He needs to. I recently got married and hubby and I couldn't quite agree on a church. He is a "new" believer coming to the Lord and for many many months I was spiritually starving. I'd attend a church he liked, it was visually appealing and it was so "hip" and etc.... Not really what I care about, what I was lacking was teaching that fed my spirit and empowered and strengthened me for the victory we have in Christ. Long story short, I felt hungry all the time, to the point where I felt like I was starving and desperate for the Word of God. Like bad. Fervently praying, God led my husband and I to Hillsong LA and God's love and presence is upon this place. Im not so hungry anymore yet there is still nothing like my pentecostal church Echoes of Faith!!!! However, it'll do. Hillsong Church is a loving family and they really care for you. Once I started to sign up for the connect groups. I was able to meet people at the connect groups. Meeting people at the connect groups are very loving. They do really care for you. They accept you as the way you are and going in to the church last week. I felt love and support when the hosts team come up and talk to you. I am usually afraid of meeting new people, but they welcome you in and don't care what type of clothes you wear. They are really loving and support you and pray for you when you are down. I have been going to connect groups for a long time and I had met friends that I can share my testimony. They are really a family, even though the church is big. Going to these small groups have helped me walk with Jesus and not care about what the world thinks or what others think of me and my walk with Jesus is strong. You should check it out first. If you're looking for a home church then you need to come few times to feel the heartbeat of the church and leadership. My wife and I have been attending for several months now and I'm home. I could write for days on the impact this church has had on my life, but I'll look to keep it short and sweet. The moment my wife and I first walked into church with our baby girl, we knew we had found home. The place that we belonged. Everyone from the greeters in line to the amazing volunteers in the kids ministry right through the worship and word...just unreal. The genuine nature of everyone was tangible and you really felt like folks were all in this together. And the grace that was both preached and experienced changed us. It was honestly like stepping into the kingdom of God in the middle of the city. What I love about Hillsong LA is the fact that it really feels like home... As a church body, Hillsong LA has a heart for Jesus and a heart for people, and it's really refreshing to see such strength and unity at the core of a church. I am a recent transplant to LA, and I love the way that Hillsong LA not only says "welcome home" to anybody who walks through the doors, but everyone from the leaders to the greeters genuinely wants you to feel welcome, to know that you have a place, and to be assured that you belong, even if you're not sure what you believe... after all, that's the love that Jesus was all about! When you walk through the doors, you're greeted with smiling faces and high fives (great to pump you up for sure!), and I'm often able to stop and talk with these church volunteers who authentically want to get to know people who walk through the doors... it isn't fake, it's a genuine love in this place. When service starts, there's never pressure to look or feel a certain way, and the music and Biblical message you get to hear always leaves you feeling encouraged and even challenged. I love the way that God is welcomed in such a tangible way at every Hillsong LA gathering I've been to... In a city like Los Angeles, this place is a beacon of light, proclaiming God's glory and grace. If you're looking for a place with great music, a fun and enjoyable vibe, solid and strengthening Scripture being taught, and a fantastic community, I highly recommend Hillsong LA! read more

It's not my first time at this church. They don't have an own place, so most of the time they run their survive at Belasco theater. This time it was in a theater next door - Mayan theater. The place was packed but they managed to get us to one of the front seats. read more
