i go to another church nearby but had heard great things about tapestry so i checked it out. if you are looking for a congregation is largely younger (high school, college, and a big demographic in the 20s and 30s), then you will probably like tapestry. no church can be all things to all people but i found the people welcoming. the church is definitely on the modern side with modern worship, big production and a modern space. if i had any criticisms or concerns for people who are looking to check it out, it would be the following. bear in mind that these are preference issues and fundamentally i think very highly of the church, but these may be dealbreakers for you. 1. pastor tends to speak very long...frequently over 60 minutes. i didn't find the pastor to be very dynamic, but again, this is a preference issue. as far as theology and content, the messages are very much on point. 2. congregation is on the young side, and the demographic is largely asian. 3. parking can be a little difficult in this part of DTLA and it's a little more run-down but then again, so is my church's area (i go to newstory LA). if this appeals to you, check out their services on youtube for a sense of what they are like. their channel is "tapestry LA church." read more

Wow, this church is absolutely amazing! The people here are super friendly and the welcoming staff will help you get situated. Whether you're new to the faith or a seasoned Christian, there's always something new to learn from the word. Pastor Charles and the other staff are always working hard to make sure people are welcomed and being challenged to be better people. This church also has a heart for local and global missions. There are kids ministries with awesome teachers and tons of staff, so families are definitely welcomed! Youth group and college groups are also taken care of, so high school and college students, check us out! So sad, another church that doesn't reflect the community. This church feels as if it was lifted from a different community and slapped into the hood. I'm starting to wonder if Christians have forgotten the great commission and are just invading the hood because it's cheaper rent. Worship was aight (more of a production than worship for me) and then someone took on the stage to tell us how to greet each other (I found this extremely awkward, especially because I have the memory of a goldfish). There was a guest preacher and he was cool but I'm not sure how much it mirrors regular Sunday service. Beautiful building, seems well staffed (though no one greeted me LOL), and even has a coffee shop. read more

I've never written a review for a church before as I've used yelp primarily (in the past) for foodie related things. What I love about yelp is the ability to look up almost any business and now, even a house of worship such as a church, where one can read reviews and honest opinions about them. In a way, I am reviewing food - spiritual food. Tapestry L.A. is a church I visited almost 3 years ago (Jan 2015) to be exact. When my friend invited me thru an invite of her mutual friends, I was a bit hesitant. At this time, I had been "church hopping" for almost 1.5 years and I was spent on trying to find a church I could regularly attend and call home. I actually looked on yelp and looked up tapestry L.A. to read more about it and view pictures of the building and location. I was 1). Surprised they even had a yelp page and 2). So intrigued by the positive feedback visitors gave. This made me more willing to check it out. Tapestry to me, is not just a church. It's a place many can call home and where a community of people really come together and live /share/experience life. One of the my first impressionable memories as a newcomer at this church was how everyone was genuinely so nice and friendly. The goal is to get each member connected into what they call a cell group. It's equivalent to a life group or small group. Cell groups are wonderful because you get to know other members of the church on a deeper level and really dive into the word together as you explore and share in a safe, vulnerable environment. Cell group introduced me to wonderful new friends and community. There are many outings and events that tapestry holds whether it be a bbq over the long weekend, volleyball or basketball games, local or short/long term missions, the list continues. The church is really big on loving the community and the sermons by head Pastor Charles are so relatable to me. I often find myself relistening to them during the week and sharing with my friends who don't attend Tapestry. I am thankful to have checked out tapestry L.A. church and even more thankful to have taken the leap of faith in not only checking it out on yelp, but physically visiting. Everyone comes from a different background, has different needs, is in a different stage of faith...but for whatever reason, you're looking for a spiritual home or just want to check out a new-to-you church. There is no perfect church, but there are healthy churches and Tapestry is definitely that. Tapestry is a non-denominational church that aims for the "radical middle." This means striving for both solid Biblical doctrine teaching and the power of the Holy Spirit (so somewhere in between conservative, which I'm more familiar with, and charismatic, which can mean passionate prayers and speaking in tongues). Pastor Charles, the lead pastor, describes himself as a "Prestecostal" - part Presbyterian, part Pentecostal. This is a fairly new and rapidly growing church. It officially launched back in November 2014 (there is a back story of how it came to be, and the pastoral staff has plenty of experience). The first time I went to service, I went alone and got a bit overwhelmed so I left right after. The 11:15 a.m. service gets really packed (which makes the space seem small), the girl who I was sitting next to was really emotional, and I just figured everyone else already knew each other. I went back though, and I was determined to make connections/meet people/get plugged in. Who should notice me standing in the back of a very crowded room, awkward and alone? Pastor Charles. He greeted me, explained to me that a lot of the people there were also new like me, but quickly introduced me to some members who invited me to a cell (small group) potluck. I haven't missed a Sunday since then. What do you want in a church? I'll tell you what I want and what I've found at Tapestry. 1. Community. People to do life together with. Weekly cell groups/small groups. Lots of occasions for fellowship (picnics, basketball, volleyball, lunches, etc.). 2. A pastor who knows me, knows where I am spiritually, and prays for me. I also enjoy getting to know all of the pastors and their families, as well as their testimonies. 3. People who truly embody the image and spirit of God. People who are so genuine, loving, accepting, and supportive. People who walk the walk, but also lend helping hands to others. 4. Scripture-based message, that's a given. 5. Plenty of opportunities to serve both the church and/or community. Other things offered are children's ministry with dedicated teachers/volunteers, youth ministry, college ministry, worship band/team, opportunities for missions/outreach, etc. but you can learn all about that on their website/FB/etc. and should you decide to attend. It's located in Westlake near MacArthur Park (close to both K-town and downtown). There's free parking (garage, lot, and street) but can be challenging if you come late, especially for the 11:15am service. So what more can I say? Been going to Tapestry for a while now and it has been such a wonderful experience serving with this church and seeing God move. Like what others have said the pastoral staff is amazing and really wants to get to know you and pray for you. Pastor Charles is such an amazing man of God and his sermons always blow my mind because of how theological it is but at the same time he lets you know how you can apply it to your life. Another great thing that this church is about is loving the community and really being good neighbors to the harboring area, Westlake. Cell groups are amazing because its broken up by gender, age, and location. This makes it easy to find the right group that fits you. I was looking for a church for so long. I have been to so many churches 3 months there, 1 year here, etc. to find a church that truly preaches Christianity and teaches as well as follows Jesus. I listen to Pastor Charles's sermons online and he leads a solid growing church founded in good biblical theology. I guess you can say Pastor Charles reads his Bible well. Additionally, I have known Pastor Charles for 2 decades as well as many of the leading staff and members of this congregation so I can comfortably and confidently give this church my seal of approval if you're looking for a sanctuary and church to call home in Los Angeles. The church is relatively new so be aware of that, but what the church lacks in size they more than make up for in heart and service. I would suggest this church for anyone looking for a seeker sensitive gospel focused glory to God type of setting where the lead pastor is very easily accessible and pretty simple to get plugged in. This is not the type of church for those who may be looking for the bells and whistles that some of the bigger churches around town may be known for. Multi ethnic and friendly for people of all types, shapes, colors, and sizes. Tapestry is a unique church name, but it makes perfect sense in that the church isn't a place filled with perfect people, but rather filled with people from all different walks of life, broken and hurt, restored by God's love, and redeemed by His Love. When all these differences (Threads) weaving through each other to make a beautiful picture that Glorifies God, which explains the name Tapestry. Spirit is POWERFULLY moving thru an amazing praise and worship. I am in tears every Sunday praising. It's doesn't matter if it is fast song or slow song, my tears are from being overjoyed and also from my brokenness. Pastor Charles' sermons are very intellectual and thought provoking. He is dead serious about being a Gospel Centered church. He and his staff are tireless workers that prays hard, teaches and counsels, loving and serving with humility. I am so blessed to see so many young people in their 20s loving and worshipping God with Passion and dedication, I am challenged by it every day. Also solid group of people in their 30s and early 40s that are married and have children are mature in their faith and strive to give their time and love for church and for the Kingdom works. Truly truly blessed and BLOWN AWAY with what they called the "THREADS" every Sunday, a brother or sister shares 5-10 mins how they come to know Christ and why they fell in Love with the Lord. "Threads", yeah it makes sense to make the Tapestry. More impressed with the willingness to show vulnerability to share each brokenness, hurt, in how God has transformed each lives to Glorify God thru both happiness and crisis. This is a community that strives to understand the true meaning of community of faith that anyone can feel safe, not judged, but rather can relate to pain and joy, and can experience spirit powerfully moving in people's lives. This is my experience as a new comer attending this church. They have great praise and worship. it's loud enough where if you are a terrible singer, they play loud enough to cover your voice. Pastor Charles is a great speaker, but more than that. He's very approachable, and he really does care about you. (he actually writes back on facebook, how dope is that) But the most important thing for me is the people. They have great people in this church, it might take some time to get to know them, but I promise you. If you push on, it will be worth it. Join a cell/small group.....and get plugged in, don't be alone. If you play basketball, there's a group for that. If you play boardgames, theres people who do that. do you bowl? come for that.... If you want like great food, there's people for that.... There are also some married people, but also lots of single people in this church, so if you are looking.....come check us out!! I love the community here at Tapestry! It's really refreshing to see in LA a great group of people who are genuinely loving and caring for one another. Now a days, it's hard to find church leaders and staffs who are really committed to serve and love one another... but over here, every week the sermons are incredibly Christ-exalting and gospel-centered. For those who have children, I highly recommend the Sunday school! The TapKids ministry for children (from preschool to upper elementary) is simply amazing and so God-centered! I went to this church with my friend since he was visiting and wanted to go to church. I should state that I grew up catholic, but converted to Judaism (it will make sense after this review). I went into the service with an open mind, but the pastor started talking about sexuality. Basically it was a gay bashing. As someone else he said if you are straight, cis and married sure have all the sex you want. If you're gay, you better lie and be straight or nothing for you. I've never been more disgusted in my life. It took a lot from me to not shout out during the service. I left fuming. As a trans person I never felt so hated before until that day. As a place of worship and being in service to god you should be focused on being welcoming and not making people feel like trash. I would stay away FAR FAR FAR away from this "place of worship". read more

I'd like to point out first and foremost that I am not a religious person, but I want to be. I want to find people who are like-minded, but can always teach me how to improve myself or to lead a better life. I am very open-minded and I have always been the type of person to stand up for what I believe is right. I attended church for the first time in my life on September 1st, 2019. I was told this church is a group of young people under 40 who are mainly Asian, and I am half Filipino so I was looking forward to it. I did feel a bit awkward as I didn't know what to expect, but first came the songs. Yes, the songs suck, but I didn't expect much else from gospel. My only complaint about the songs is they're repetitive and highly lack any originality. My problem was the church itself. Today was the first service being held since USC's fall semester started. I was told tons of new students are being invited and it would be very welcoming. Tons of new people were invited, but welcoming was the exact opposite of what was held. The very first speaker was a man who claimed he was gay 4 years ago and became a full fledged Christian and denounced his sexuality in all aspects of life. This was so difficult for me to listen through as I had tears in my eyes during his entire speech. If I could have done anything different during that speech, I wish I walked up to that man, hugged him, and told him I accept him for who he is and whatever he's done. Then the preacher spoke. He reiterated that "we have no room in our hearts for homophobia," but proceeded to exclaim there are 23 verses in the bible that says you shouldn't be gay. In short, his argument is that as long as you're cis, straight and married, screw whenever you want. However, not a single time did he mention gay marriage, and whether being with your partner who you are legally married to under the eyes of God and the law, is okay to be with romantically or not. Let's not even bring up trans people into this mix, let's act like only cis people exist in the world! They held this specific lesson because they knew that there were tons of new students coming from their invitation and they wanted to vet the newcomers, displaying their bigotry for the first time of the school year. I am so glad that I didn't have to attend multiple services to be shown the true colors of this church. I am a bisexual cis married woman and I have never felt more horrified during a speech in my life. As soon as the service was over, I went to my car and cried. This service has completely changed my desire of wanting to feel like I'm apart of something bigger than me. This experience was so disgusting, I don't want to attend church ever again. read more

I felt very welcomed from day 1, and was refreshed by the service. Great balance of valuing the Scripture and allowing the freedom of the Spirit. Tapestry LA Church is amazing. The praise band is awesome - you can feel the Spirit moving. Pastor Charles and the pastoral staff are so devoted and approachable. The sermons are gospel-centered and Spirit-filled. The small groups (called cell groups) meet weekly, are life-changing, and are a refreshing break from the weekly grind. Tapestry LA has been my home for three years now. Looking back, I don't know where I would be if not for this church community. The college ministry truly emanates the body of Christ that we see in Acts 2. Every Sunday service feels like an encounter with God and there hasn't been a week that I didn't leave feeling spiritually refreshed. I started attending Tapestry a few months after I made a very dramatic move to LA in 2015. I was recovering from some trauma and really wasn't sure about going to a new church, especially given how introverted I am. But I stepped into a cell group and was completely embraced. Pastor Charles and the staff are an amazing mix of Word-driven, Spirit-led people; I didn't know a church could be both. This is my newcomer's experience at Tapestry. Tapestry is a great church with an amazing community of loving people. This is a place where you can really feel the glory and love of Christ. I'm someone that is "newer" to the Word but I really look forward to the sermons and cell group meetings. Pastor Charles is incredible at delivering the message of the Lord. As other yelpers have mentioned, most of the members are Korean American, but this isn't a Korean church and there are members from various backgrounds and ethnicities. If it's your first time and you feel hesitant or anxious (maybe bc you're a shy person?), don't feel that way and come out to one of the services! The members of this church are truly welcoming and all you have to do is smile or make eye contact with someone on the welcoming team (the people that are wearing badges, usually standing around the round tables) and surely someone will come and greet you. They are cell based so you can join a cell group to get plugged in, but you're not pushed to do so if you're not ready to. But I highly recommend joining a cell group and going to the bible studies. You learn a lot and meet really interesting people that love Jesus! There are services at 9:15 or 11:15. The pattern seems to be that the first service tends to be more mellow with less attendees and the second is almost always full. There is a parking structure in the building, enter through Coronado. I was feeling low vibration and wanted to be around people who love God. I yelped and found this church. I was welcomed immediately and after some confusion was directed to a worship room. They members were very polite, warm and welcoming. I received healing last night and shared similar coincidences with a church group member. That is no surprise. I'm also Catholic but love worshiping with Evangelicals also. I recently read that the pastor of the Church also mixes it up a bit with Presbyterian, Pentecostal and Evangelical. I'm a Catholic-Evangelical. Lol. I was very impressed and will return again for another group session because it made me feel good. That's the whole point. Amen. read more

The worship is beautiful and Pastor Charles sermons are deep, thought provoking, and most importantly, extremely humble.
