During our stay in December, we liked the location of the hotel to the main attractions and proximity to various points in the city within walking distance. Once you check in, the staff does not really interact much with you. We barely got any insights to the city and the hotel, making it feel less welcoming. We were told to look at a paper for the restaurant hours and there was some remodeling going on that made it a bit inconvenient with only 2 elevators. The rooms were spacious and clean, but a bit outdated and stuffy. It was comfortable but you could definitely feel the old room. It was sadly under renovation while we were here and I would have chose to stay elsewhere if I knew. The room itself was recently updated and was clean and large. The view was of scaffolding unfortunately. Restaurant area is in a windowless underground location along with a bar that was stocked on rolling racks. Everything could improve. The hotel is being renovated and the rooms that are being rented out are far below a four star property. There is no concierge to take luggage up to the room as advertised. There was no sheer curtain on the window so I could see directly into the hotel across the street which means they can see in to mine unless the blackout curtains are closed. There was no remote for the TV in the room. The bar provides ice for the rooms, however it is brought to your room with no lid on the public elevator so any sneeze or cough and your ice is contaminated. I called for ice and after waiting an hour I went to get it myself and saw the bartender pick said "Ice bucket" (a bucket without a lid is a wine bucket, not an ice bucket) off the floor from under the glass washing sink (unhygienic). Four days into my stay I brought my concerns and frustration to the assistant manager. She said the curtain would be hung and for my inconvenience I would get free breakfast for the rest of my stay (I was booked for two weeks and had mentioned I could have stayed at Premier Inn and gotten better service and free breakfast (as stated earlier breakfast was added along with executive club benefits which I wasn't interested in). I did go for breakfast which is served buffet style (£27 normally) and while the plates were hot, the food was not. I never ate there again. I spoke to the General Manager regarding my concerns and stated I thought I should receive a discount for the state of my stay (I was booked for two weeks). This did not happen. Instead he tried to insist I move rooms; a suite. I wasn't interested after unpacking and being there for five days already. I did request a discount for part of my stay. Hilton Honors was made aware, however they added 20,000 points to my account; after this experience why would I want to stay in a Hilton property again? To date, I've received no financial compensation for this deplorable stay. I'd avoid this hotel at all costs. The Scotsman is across the street, Radisson Blu around the corner and Marriott has properties also in Old Town. BTW, the General Manager told me he charged £7 for a cider in the bar "because he could"! Hardly the attitude a customer who has issues with their stay wants or needs to hear. Our stay 7/26-8/5 - room 446 & 447. Location was fantastic with no loud noise from the 4th floor room. Easy walk all over town. Front desk was so welcoming and friendly. Cecilia and crew in the morning were a highlight! We were able to get our two rooms next door and early. That made the arriving from the US such a smooth transition. Beds were comfy. Nice bath, except slow draining in our shower. Breakfast buffet was totally worth the add on, including mimosas and Bloody Mary's on the weekend. Lots of options to choose from. Bar was nice service and good food, quiet. Hope their remodel is done soon. We never saw anyone working outside, but lots of scaffolding. Thanks for a great stay! I am so very disappointed with my experience at the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton. My husband and I just completed a multiweek trip in the UK and Europe and during our stay, this hotel was one of two hotels that had construction occurring during our stay. The other hotel (a Marriott) had an alert when we booked the hotel that there would be construction and shared the amenities that would be impacted. They sent an email reminder the week before and provided a "thank you for your patience" gift upon check in. The Edinburgh Carlton did not give any information letting us know that there was construction. It was terribly disappointing pulling up to find that the elegant exterior of the building was covered in scaffolding. One of the reasons we picked this hotel was because of the beautiful photos of the lobby with the staircase and places to sit. Our favorite way to wind down in the evening is to sit in the lobby and have a drink. There was no lobby. The entire thing was blocked off for construction leaving a very small, cramped hallway instead of a lobby. The floor plan was completely confusing with hallways blocked off, elevators blocked and no signage for how to get to the restaurant and back to the lobby when you got to your room. We finally got to our room only to find that the app would not work on the remote entry and neither key would work either. Back down to the lobby to get 2 new keys which also didn't work. Back to the lobby again to deal with the annoyed staff who gave us new keys that finally worked. The next day, after a day of sight seeing, we again couldn't get into our room. We went back to the front desk to a different annoyed staff member who got us new keys after questioning us as to if we put the keys near our phone to demagnetize them. We asked for restaurant recommendations when we went out to dinner that night and the staff seemed annoyed that we were bothering them. The same happened when we asked about how to get to the closest train station. That night when we came back to the hotel and keys that AGAIN do not work, so we again went back to the front desk. The next day, the 4th time our keys did not work, the front desk person let us know that there is an IT issue and this is happening in many of the rooms and we get a master key. There was no place to hang out and have a drink unless you wanted to be in your room or in the restaurant, staff overall were not friendly, and we were so disappointed with our stay. I stayed at Hilton Edinburgh Carlton during my February/March 2023 trip to Edinburgh, don't get me wrong, it's a decent Hilton, and the location is great, but the little things add up and I had many issues with my stay, to the point I wouldn't stay here again. Starting with the positives, the location is great, being just off the Royal Mile on North Bridge, a short walk away from Edinburgh Waverley Station, Edinburgh Castle and St James Quarter. PRO TIP: If you're visiting in a car, use the Apcoa parking on New Street at Edinburgh Waverley Station, as residents of the hotel can claim 20% off. As the hotel is located in an old Victorian building, while it looks great from the outside, it isn't exactly practical, the hotel is on multiple levels, so chances are if you're walking around the hotel, you're going to see a small set of 2/3 steps every now and then. Another limitation, potentially down to the age of the hotel is the vast contrast between rooms, my party was assigned three rooms, a King Junior Suite, and two Executive Rooms, and in terms of appearance/shape/size, they were rather different, even the rooms of the same room category. As a Diamond Hilton Honors member, I stayed in my Junior Suite, while the room was comfortable and fine, I was disappointed with the room looking nothing like the photos, and there also was not the separate living area promised, it was just one large room with no separate TV, in the "separate living area", all the more amusing as one of my guest's Executive Rooms, did have two TV's, but again impractical - they were directly behind each other, with only one remote, so you could only use one at the same time! I did find my room really difficult to find, it felt like a trek just to get into the room, as I was placed on the "first floor", I had to go in the first lift from the lobby, and then walk through the bar, before going down another set of stairs to the ground floor, however, the second lift never seemed to recognise my room key, so I either had to wait for someone else to scan in, or walk down the steps. What about people with mobility issues? How can they expect the keys not to work in a lift THAT REQUIRES THEM? The staff did seem friendly, but again I had multiple issues with that during my stay. - After checking in, I asked if there was a fire alarm test planned during my stay, and I was told "No", however, I was woken up in the early morning on my final stay, due to a fire alarm, which I was told was their regular weekly test. Firstly, why are they doing fire alarms at that time of day? Secondly, why would they not give guests any notice? - I was overcharged in the overnight clearance, but they did rectify this after I made them aware, as I get instant spending notifications from my bank. While the room was comfortable, I was disappointed with the pillows, which were low quality. I also was a little disappointed with the facilities, as a mini-fridge was not automatically in the room (despite again being promised), I had asked for this, and then they delivered it on a setting which froze everything I put in on there. Breakfast ends at 10 am during the week, which meant I was unable to have breakfast, as is far too early. 10:30 am or 11 am would be much better. The digital key never seemed to work in any area of the hotel either, after making the front desk aware they were unable to provide any troubleshooting other than handing me a digital key. The hotel has an executive lounge which includes a small selection of spirits in the evening, it was a comfortable and nice area to relax and spend time, but items in the lounge, even bottled water never topped up (even the following day!), and it was very rare to find a staff member actually in the lounge. One of the highlights of the hotel for me was how there was so little noise coming from outside the hotel, which for a city centre hotel, with my room overlooking the train tracks, was impressive, there was some noise, but far better than many other hotels. 2* - A comfortable hotel in a good location, but much better hotels in Edinburgh, with so many issues, most importantly the confusing layout, malfunctioning lift and fire alarm. read more

I've been reading the reviews of this hotel and can't believe it's the same place. Staying here as a Diamond has been a great experience from the room upgrade looking over the Royal Mile, to the included wonderful breakfasts in the restaurant or the nice executive lounge. Rooms are a maze but it's an old building in a great location. I do agree that the air conditioning/heat needs some work, but I wasn't here in winter so we just opened windows for a bit to cool down the room. Comfy beds, nice bathroom. Nice place. The location of this hotel cannot be beat. It is right next to the Royal Mile and not too far from the train station and bus station. Everything is walkable from here. There was quite a bit of road construction while I was there but it did not cause issues with noise but it did make it difficult to find the entrance to the hotel. The staff were all very nice. Find another place. The only reason to stay here is the proximity to The Royal Mile. Stay is August of 2023. PRO's: half a block to Royal mile and walking distance to Waverley Station. The AC did work CON's: Breakfast buffet was not worth it. We had one breakfast it was so bad all the hot food was cold and some was burned. The coffee was mud literally there was coffee sediment in the bottom a pot, when you poured the coffee the cup was a quarter full of a coffee mud. It was a French press and apparently an instant coffee was used. The bread and pastry were hard or stale. When we checked in staff told us we could remove any days of breakfast we did not eat, after our first breakfast experience we returned to the desk and asked to have the remaining days taken off, we were told NO absolutely not. After overhearing our discussion another staff came and said yes the charges for the future breakfasts could be removed. The room had carpet that was dirty with stains, no smell just looked like old tired carpet. There was brown mold in the bathroom around the sink and in the shower. read more

4/6/23 - Being a Diamond Member doesn't help you at all at this Hilton. We checked in at 3pm and relaxing in the executive room. Will add more later. Check out the photos. 3:25 checking in and off to the room. 4 stars total so far. The inside is nice and clean. Friendly staff. The inside is a madman's maze to find your room with -3 floors to a 5th floor. I went from the G floor to the 1st floor then to the 0 floor using a lift, aka elevator, several mini steps and another lift. Finally found the room. The room is nice and comfy again. Would be 4 stars except the maze to find your room. This is not a handicap hotel or if you have any leg injuries. Don't come to this hotel. At a 3 star for the 1st day. 4/7/23- well I knocked the overall rating down to 1 star. There is no working heater in the room and they can't switch us out to another room. Supposedly there are only 3 of these suites. They said they can manually adjust the heat from where the front desk is. Cold AC coming out and no heat!!! Overall 1 star. Paying a lot of money for a room so I can freeze in here with the family all night. Also, no extra blankets or anything. Worst experience ever with a Hilton anywhere in the world. More to come. Front desk now said there are portable heaters they can bring down. It's a dungeon where the room is and no view as stated. Where were the heaters last night when I called the front desk and service. Didn't know they existed. Back to 2 stars. After many complaints and to the 800 number. Hilton employees came in and it seems the heaters are working now in this room. Will update later. It's 2:10 pm. Pending service to the room still. Room was serviced and they fixed the heater. Total of 3 stars overall. read more

First off great location close to everything that you want to see while staying here on holiday; however, that's where the positives end. I had several rooms as I purchased for a group and had the chance to preview all of them. They are just average for a Hilton property. I noticed straight away the extremely dirty carpet and the unkept fixtures. Secondly the signage throughout the hotel wasn't exactly accurate or descriptive in directing you to things such as the lounge, fitness room or hotel rooms. Breakfast was standard and fine. It was what you'd expect from a Hilton in the UK. The staff is the real reason for the low review. You can see that I am well traveled and know how to behave. I have never been rude or condescending to anyone in my travels. I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated. That all being said; the staff was rude and I felt like I was an inconvenience at every simple interaction. From checking in to checking out I felt downright uncomfortable. I will say that this is limited to housekeeping and the front desk; the wait staff was fantastic. Staff will be the single reason that I will not return. read more

First we were. It notified there was construction in the hotel. The Breakfast was at best a little warm when we ate. We also Hide this hotel because it had dining because we sometimes don't feel like going out after a long day. Just vacuumed and bed made. We went on Saturday as there were no seats and were told we need reservations. We are staying there not off the street. There were only two of us! When we asked for the room to be cleaned and reset. I'm a gold with Hilton and platinum Marriott to put my review into context. I was weighing up between a 4 and 5 star and decided a 5 as for a Hilton and regular hotel its as good as it gets. I can't rate it against a resort. I would stay here again for sure. No idea why the bad reviews. I stayed here 2 nights and had zero issues. Summary- Pros: - Nice clean rooms and bathrooms - Modern rooms and bathrooms - Wifi was quick - no waiting at check-in or check-out - The diamond club was nice and a lot of food - I was able to literally park out the front for nearly an hour on both check-in and check-out with no issues. The times are posted so you need to be gone outside of those hours. - The elevators were quick - No noise in the room from the street or other rooms. Cons/Problems: - No onsite parking but its a 5 minute walk and they will give you a discount. It was 16£ a day after the discount. Other info: a short walk to the Edinburgh Waverly Train Station, The Royal Mile is literally 30 seconds from the front door, Edinburgh Castle about 10minutes up the Royal Mile. read more

Extremely disappointing! We traveled six months this past year between South America and Europe this was the worst Hilton hotel experience we had. Seriously, do NOT stay here if you want service, good food and heat go someplace else. The business lounge is small, very few window which looked out into an ally which makes the room bar dark and unwelcoming. The room was cold and the food display was just disgusting. The wine and liquor was kicked up. We searched for wait staff but was unable to find anyone. The hotel lobby and bar were literally freezing on the first day we arrived. The next day was warmer but the halls were freezing. Breakfast room was a sauna. Sloppy loose running scrambled eggs. We tried to order room service twice called every number we could several times no one answered. My husband had to go to the bar to order our food and bring it back to the room. Location is good but there are several hotel options with just as good of a location in the area that I would suggest trying before this one. read more

We stayed 6 nights in this hotel last week. I was with a group and we booked two rooms. We wanted to be near the royal mile and there are MANY options for that but in discussing our options I fought for this hotel because I genuinely believed it would be the best. Like anything, there was good and bad but I always write my reviews with the mindset that people reading them are those who are trying to make a decision about where to stay, so let me share our experience and try to help. First of all, the location is great! It is literally a 15 minute walk or less to anything you might want to do in the area, from the Castle to Calton Hill and there are plenty of Whiskey and Gin distilleries within that distance as well. You are also right next to Waverly station, which is a huge transportation hub, so if you need a train, one is right at your doorstep. Five stars for location all the way. What brings down the rating of this hotel is the hotel, its service and its staff. As I said, we booked two rooms and luckily they were near each other. However, one room was quite poorly designed in that you open the door directly into a wall and then one person has to scoot towards the restroom to allow the other person in so that you can close the door. Very odd, but since it was a corner room, not a huge issue. The first thing I did was walk to my second floor window to look out at the view, but the windows were SO dirty, it was difficult to see anything. The other room was the same. We did see the top floor getting their windows cleaned from outside the building on a walk back to the hotel towards the beginning of our stay and held out hope but unfortunately our windows were never cleaned. We had issues with housekeeping on a daily basis and this was not just a problem for our two rooms, as we listened to a rather heated argument between another neighbor and staff towards the end of our stay. "Don't you dare call me a liar!" I heard a woman yell outside my door, so I headed to the peephole to see what was going on. On the way, I heard pulling on our door and got a bit frightened, but when I got there, two of the housekeeping staff were speaking to an older woman in the room next to me. They had pulled the "Do not disturb" sign off of our door and were telling her that her room hasn't been cleaned because she had her sign out. She vehemently disagreed, saying that her room had not been cleaned in 3 days and that she had put the sign on her nightstand specifically to make sure someone came in. She was very angry and refused to let them in asking for a manger. Around 6 p.m. we heard someone vacuuming, but the whole ordeal was uncomfortable. We discussed coming out to speak to the manager as well when she arrived as we had been having similar issues but we needed to leave for dinner by the time we heard the vacuuming. In our experience, when check out is at 11 and check in at 3, most hotels get the rooms cleaned during this time. However, we would be out until late in the afternoon and return to an uncleaned room. After the second day when we needed our bins emptied and some fresh towels, I put the bins outside the door around 4 p.m. Later they had been changed but that did not help us with towels. On the third day, we returned by 5 and the room was still dirty so I called housekeeping. They told us they had just not gotten to our room yet (after 5) and expedited the cleaning. Someone was there within 15 minutes. Mind you, there was only one day during our stay when we left the DND sign on the door. Towards the end of our stay, we were tired of it and just sought someone out and asked for what we needed. I was disgusted to learn that I could not be given clean cups when I asked the cleaning staff, because in her words "we just rinse your dirty ones in the bathroom sink. We don't have extra". No wonder both our rooms had dirty cups. To the contrary, the other room had advised us that they were woken by housekeeping one morning in the middle of our stay asking what time they would like their room cleaned. They said this happened around 8 am. Regardless, this hotel DESPERATELY needs an overhaul in housekeeping. It's an important part of a person's stay. Sorry to go on and on about this. When we are only staying a few nights we find it easier to just not have housekeeping come and it is rare we use them, but I have never had issues like this in the past. The breakfast buffet is decent but definitely not something I would pay for. Also, my partner witnessed items from a table being cleared returned to the buffet area, including butter and silverware. I am very concerned about the cleanliness and sanitation of this hotel and therefore cannot give them more than 2 stars. One for the location and one for the room itself being modern with a comfortable bed. I hope they focus on service and cleanliness and improve in the future. I would personally not stay here again but try one of the smaller boutique hotels on the Royal Mile. read more

As a Lifetime Diamond member at Hilton, I've stayed at well over 1,100 nights at Hilton properties around the World, most without issue. As for the Carlton in Edinburgh, possibly the worst hotel still holding a Hilton flag. Poorly managed, understaffed in all areas, Hotel management has no qualms about misleading and/or lying to your face, just to get you to move on. The hotel has a good location, if you can get past the understaffing in the restaurant, front desk and Executive lounge. The Executive Lounge food is always picked over and not refilled. The tables are un-bussed and the restaurant service is virtually non existent and extremely slow when they do show up. We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated in an empty restaurant. If you aren't bothered by poor service & ineffective management , then this is the place for you. I've been a Hilton Honors member for 36 years, so I don't take these negative comments lightly, but the Hilton Carlton in Edinburgh has earned everyone through their lack of service, poor performance and lack of quality provided. read more

Great location and nice rooms with very comfortable beds. Service ranges from great to ok. Stayed here for three nights on two occasions. The first time, we had a bit of difficulty with our room selection, and while there some inconsistencies as to what could be done for us, as they were fully booked; they made it up to us on the second stay--upgrading us a much larger room. The rooms are well appointed and beds are extra comfortable. Depending on where your room is located, access to the rooms may be difficult as there a series of stairs in middle of many hallways. However, despite some of the shortcomings above, if you are looking for location, it is excellent. Located near Bridge and High Street, you have easy and nearby access to the major attractions. Also, if you are coming by rail, Waverley Station is a quick 6 minute easy walk. For those who have Executive Lounge access, breakfast is much better than dinner. If you don't have lounge access, the breakfast buffet is ok--but certainly nothing to write home about. Overall, would stay here again. Although,, if given the choice, the Caledonian would be my preferred place to stay. read more

We stayed here for 4 nights and was very disappointed in the service we received. When we arrived, the shower floor was quite dirty. It is a white textured floor, and ours had a brown scummy ring around the outer rim. There was also black fungus / mildew in the caulk where the glass partition meets the shower floor. I grabbed a washcloth to see how easily this would come up, and sure enough, it came up just fine. The next morning, as we left for the day to explore the city, I mentioned it to the front desk, asking for it to be cleaned. The staff member wrote our room number on a pad of paper with no other note next to it and seemed quite disinterested as she apologized and said it would be remedied. It wasn't. I got back to the room and the room had been serviced, but the shower was not cleaned. I decided to just do it myself with a washcloth they had in the room. Gross. Several other events really disappointed. The bar took 30 minutes to prepare my wife's drink - because they were out of cucumber. I wish they would have just told us, she would have skipped the garnish, but they kept her waiting and then never came back by with the bill. I had to go to the bar and ask for it to be printed. We were one of two tables in the entire bar. There are other small complaints I have during our stay, but will leave them off here. After reaching out to the staff via email, I got a form reply that said "sorry, and we will discuss this with our staff". Another brush-off. This hotel is expensive. Location is great. If I had to do it all over again, I would have stayed elsewhere. read more

We are stay here right now, the experience is awful! I booked three rooms for my family, the heat in 2 of them did not work and the outside temp is in the 30s. They told us it was to late in the evening to change rooms and would only give us new accommodations after complaining twice more this morning. SHAME ON HILTON! Found an offsite parking location 2 miles away. Hilton would not pay for that parking 50 pounds. Staff is cold and unfriendly, they could care less if you stayed there or not. We spent five nights at this hotel for vacation. It is a very nice facility with modern amenities. The staff is friendly and very helpful. We needed electrical adapters and they were happy to loan us a few during our stay. We coordinated trips through the concierge to visit the Highlands; he gave sound advice on which ones to go on and which ones we might want to avoid. Overall it was a very simple process and we were not disappointed. Our room was very spacious and comfortable, clean, and what you would expect with the Hilton brand. One word of advice, avoid any room that is on the Royal Mile side of the hotel. Lots of Whisky drinkers having a good time until the wee hours of the morning will keep you awake!! Stayed here for 2 nights with husband and 14 year old daughter. The hotel is on North Bridge just off Royal mile and in prime position for touring the city in foot, food places, Waverley station and shopping. Reception were lovely, we came in very early and were able to leave bags while we went out to see the city. The hotel lobby is very nice and the rooms were very comfortable. Housekeeping however weren't great, toilet paper wasn't stocked up and bins not emptied but hey, we were fine as we literally just used the hotel for sleeping and charging devices in between tours! I would stay here again as it's very conveniently located. read more

Hilton Edinburgh Carlton was an absolutely wonderful Hotel! From the super nice and efficient staffer at the check-in, to the room, to the time we checked out, this was a great hotel experience. This is a modern hotel in an old city, but from the outside, it blends right in. It is right in the heart of Downtown Edinburgh, just a few minutes walk from the Castle. Also within walking distance are fantastic restaurants, shops, and historic places. The hotel staff had a singular purpose, and that was to make us at home and help us enjoy Scotland and Edinburgh thoroughly. They were so terribly kind to our little girl, and treated us as family. The hotel has a special breakfast area for Hilton Honors Members that served the best Hotel Breakfast food I've ever had. We had the blood pudding, kind of like a sausage and I really liked it. The food was the same quality as a high end restaurant, and table service was there. The waitress was awesome! Because of the rainy weather in Scotland, the hotel has a huge lobby with plenty of places to sit while waiting for transportation. The front desk staff were just fantastic, and at every turn were moving folks where they needed to be with patience, respect, kindness, and speed. The room was cozy and modern with a full selection of coffee, tea, and treats. Everything was clean and well maintained. We literally had not one stressful moment caused by the hotel or their staff. I hate to admit it, but arriving at this hotel and meeting the Scottish people running it, served to begin what will be my family's life-long love affair with Scotland, Edinburgh, and the Highlands. Love the location of this hotel. We've had a couple of issues with responses from the front desk and housekeeping but otherwise have enjoyed this location. Hopefully we can visit again someday. read more

It is in the heart of the city, close by to tons of restaurants and the Royal Mile. The building is nice and the rooms are clean. Great location as it's also right by the train station and all the car rental places. read more

Great hotel!!! Clean. If you're a Diamond member the lounge is pretty nice. Quiet. Has wine and beer complimentary and usually a soup and an appetizer. Perfect if you want something light or to hold you over. You have to consume everything while in the lounge you can't take anything to your room. Also have an assortment of coffees and teas, sodas l, waters and juices. For breakfast has breakfast items and a small menu you can order a la cart from and it's also included again if you have access to lounge. If you don't the buffet breakfast the hotel offers is very good also (not sure on price). And let's talk location couldn't be better!!! You're just like 8 min walk to castle, 5 min to marks and Spencer's, Primark, TK Max, and much more. Lots of great bars and restaurants just a short walk away. read more

Really enjoyed my stay at the Hilton. Great location, clean and functional accommodations. The decor was very modern and I liked that they had sound proof windows for those with sensitivities to the outside traffic. Highly recommend this hotel! The only two considerations: the shower in our room did not have a full glass door, so water gets everywhere. It's a really neat looking shower, but not the most functional. Other than that, it takes quite a bit of time to get through the check in line, so plan ahead. Great stay! read more
