I love this hotel, and I say that after just the first night of a 3 night stay here! Well, there's always their famous warm and delectable chocolate cookie presented upon check-in, but that's just the tip of the iceberg for this particular location. This hotel has the major advantage of a supreme location as it's only a 10 minute walk from a host of famous Edinburgh attractions and highlights. Just some of those very nearby attractions are the Edinburgh Castle, the National Museum of Scotland, the Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetery, the Royal Mile, and the Grassmarket Market commercial district. Besides that and more, there are a ton of pubs and other eateries of all sorts of cuisines close by. Then there are their normal hotel amenities. It's a spacious hotel housed in a historic building built in 1892. The room we have is cozy and comfortable and we even have a nice 2nd floor view of Edinburgh Castle. Their breakfast buffet is a delicious and large spread of classic British goodies. All of the staffers we have met are helpful and wonderful. The Hilton chain staffers are also always able to look up my Hilton Honors member number for points even though I never remember it. I can't give this Doubletree a bigger thumbs up. Hotel walking distance from Princes Street, the Royal Mile, and Grassmarket, this was the perfect location to stay. My partner was here for work, and I tagged along for some solo exploring during the day and couples' nights out. Breakfast was served in a lovely dining hall with a solid English breakfast selection, including haggis and blood sausage. There were also juices, a smoothie, porridge, and a menu with additional items from the kitchen, some included, some with an extra charge. King Room: The room wasn't huge, but they made good use of the space. I wouldn't say I loved the TV stand being right at the foot of the bed, but other than that, there was just enough room to open my luggage comfortably. The bathroom was a decent size. AC, robes, ironing board, desk, wardrobe and mini fridge, all used and appreciated. Only downside: the room smelled strongly of mothballs. Overall Service: Check-in was at 3PM, but we arrived early and the staff gladly stored our bags so we could grab lunch and explore. Everyone we encountered, from front desk to breakfast staff, was extremely kind, professional, and welcoming. They hold themselves to a world-class standard of service, and it truly came across in every interaction. And yes, you do get a warm, baked cookie at check-in. Always a nice touch. read more

I chose this hotel mainly bc I love the free warm chocolate chip cookies with nuts. They are delicious! And second, bc it's located near the castle. I wasn't totally fond of our first room and they moved us the second day to another larger room for the duration of our stay, of which we appreciated. Overall, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. The placement of the television on a giant long table directly at the foot of the bed was awkward. It was esp awkward for me being vision impaired and having to get up in the middle of the night to potty and running into it so we moved it back against the curtained wall which was much better. I realized the reason they did that is bc the outlet was on the floor near the bed and I assume they wanted to limit tripping hazards on the cord. They should have figured out another way to run the cord. What a waste of an obnoxious piece of furniture that was large and wide enough to have added drawers. There were no drawers to put clothes in the room. However, on our last night, I returned from the holiday market and walked into our room and my husband pointed out that the curtains were blowing in the wind. I don't know why he didn't bother to check, but when I pulled back the curtains, I discovered that the window had come open and that particular night there were gail force winds up to 60 MPH. My husband figured out how to rig the window shut. We requested more blankets because our room was so cold. This is an older hotel and it hasn't been renovated in a long time, if at all. We ate at the hotel restaurant and that was really good. Every dish that we had, we enjoyed. After our final night, I took a cookie for the road. Imagine my absolute disgust when I bit into the cookie and tasted a clump of hair. I am vision impaired, so I didn't actually look at the cookie before I bit into it, but it totally disgusted me. The staff was nice overall. They do allow pets and I'm not a fan of pet hotels. The location isn't close to anything but the castle and it's a 10 minute walk to reach the castle. It will be a minute before I stay at a Doubletree again after the cookie experience and older accommodations. This is the third doubletree in different cities and countries that we stayed in less than 4 yrs that wasn't renovated and are lacking. read more

The Doubletree is on the "Old Town" side of Edinburgh which may make a difference location wide (no steps). Staff were friendly and I was able to get my room quickly. The room was pretty basic old school but did the job. There is a breakfast place attached and they offered a full breakfast to Diamond members. I would not say it was great but you can also order off the menu rather than just the buffet. For the price it was a decent value. read more

The hotel is located near Old town which gives you lots of options to see many of the sights in that part of Edinburgh. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are fair size for a city hotel. All of the furniture is very dated but still useable. The food, both breakfast and dinner is very average at best. Had we not been on a tour we would not have eaten there. Even with that, we did skip dinner the 2nd night. read more

This was such a beautiful hotel to stay at. We were here for 5 days and the hotel accommodations were perfect for me and my little family. The rooms were very clean, the bed was soft, they had water available for the guest and warm cookies on check in. Everything was walking distance but we rented a car. The hotel doesn't have parking so we just parked down the street. No big deal. It was a little noisy at night but that's because it's the city and people are having fun . read more

We ( a group of 3 adults and 2 teenagers) arrived late at night, completely wore out from the North Coast 500 road trip. Our original booked hotel did not work out. We wandered into the Doubletree exhausted and fingers crossed that they would have rooms for us. The night staff was so kind. They found us 3 rooms close together. They gave us wonderful cookies and gave us free breakfast vouchers. The rooms were so clean and comfy. Hot water, clean sheets, and comfy mattresses. It was heavenly. Thank you Doubletree. Nice property in a busy area. Very nice staff for us in and squared away quicky. Air did not work and asked the front desk for maintenance to address and guess they didn't. Never worked. Absolutely the best front desk staff I have experienced in ages. Quite welcoming upon arrival, but one staff member, Tz, went above and beyond when we needed help after the ATM up the street ate our debit card. He spent his own money calling the US for us; for some reason, the phone in the room couldn't dial the US. Also happened to have a chance to talk with the middle and upper management--several of whom shared their love of Scotland and gave us ideas for our onward trip. Thank you, Scott. High speed WiFi and spacious room. We turned down the daily sheet changing to be more green, but the Scottish shortbread was a nice touch. Plenty of towels too. Breakfast for Ł10 is quite reasonable with plenty of options including handmade omelettes. Really nice not to have to go looking for some place to eat early in the morning. Great, quiet location away from, but within easy walking distance, to all of the sites which interest us. Look forward to our return visit! read more

The room had adequate facilities including a refrigerator and coffee maker. Great hotel. Close to everything, including public transport. Hotel was super accommodating, we were supposed to stay only 2 nights but extended our stay another 2 nights. We were perfectly happy staying in the room we booked, but they upgraded us to a suite which was absolutely beautiful. Front desk staff is multi-lingual and were able to answer any questions we had and set up transportation to the train station. Staff in the restaurant were unbelievably friendly and fun to speak with! Would highly recommend this for any type of travel: business, vacation and/or family! read more

OK, first and foremost, this hotel in nowhere near the City Centre! When you check in, they try and sell you a £10 per day breakfast package (breakfast in NOT included in the rate). They have refrigerators in the rooms and we purchased some yogurt, scones and fruit which was fine for us. Several food stores on Lothian road to choose from. There are many bus routes about one block from the hotel entrance on Lothian Road. There are also many restaurants at the intersection of Lothian Road and Princess Street, which is a nice walk. The hotel was very clean but the bathroom was tiny. Hardly anyplace to use your shaving kit and water gets all of the floor. But they do provide many towels. Overall, just an average Hilton hotel. This is an excellent property. It is located very close to public transportation, and walking distance to the Edinburgh castle and the Royal Mile. There many restaurants, bars, grocery stores, ATMs within walking distance. The lobby is clean, large and inviting. The staff is friendly and helpful. My room on the 2nd floor was very large, very clean, and offered all the amenities I needed such as fast WiFi, a very comfortable bed, flat-screen TV, a mini-fridge, a work desk, air conditioning, and many power outlets for my electronics. The bathroom was clean, and well-lit. The internet speed was great. The breakfast at the hotel was tasty and offered many hot and cold items. This property gains a huge advantage and disadvantage because of it's location. I have a view of Edinburgh Castle from my 4th-floor room. Stunning. Parking sucks. Although the hotel has negotiated a favorable rate of £12 a day at a car park, it's about 5-minute walk away. Unlike the DoubleTree Bellshill (Glasgow), I have functioning A/C. The traffic control signals range from obvious in Edinburgh to "wait for someone to honk at you" so you know it's safe. If you plan on driving to the hotel, rent an automatic with GPS. read more

As a diamond guest (that means I spend way too much time in hotels) it was far below average. The biggest issues were the rooms, as they are like being in a dungeon with the darkness. Not good! The biggest issues is the loudness in the rooms. You can hear EVERYTHING!! So if someone on your floor comes in late you will be woken up for sure. Yeah that's quite bad. And the bar and restaurant are quite... not good. The bar had a poorer selection of scotch than Places in the USA (how is this possible?), and the food is average at best. The staff, however, is quite amazing and friendly! So there is that! read more

The Edinburgh Doubletree is a mix of positive and negative. Depending on what you value, it may be a good choice. First, the positives: 1. The staff were friendly and helpful. Service was courteous and prompt. 2. The location is excellent. Depending on the room, you may get a great view of the Castle, and there are excellent restaurant choices within walking distance. Haymarket all trains to everywhere are a quick 10 minute walk. The University is right around the corner, and shopping abounds. 3. The room furnishings. There was a luxurious soaking tub in the room, and an adjustable shower with excellent pressure. The furniture was tasteful, clean, and comfortable. There were a few negatives as well: 1. The pillows. The bed pillows looked great, but they were the least comfortable I've ever slept on (including those that came with cots in open bay barracks). Whomever picked out the pillows should be sentenced to sleep on them for a year - though that may be too severe. 2. The WiFi. The wireless was outdated and slow, and continuously dropped service. If you need to VPN for work, this is NOT the hotel for you. 3. The restaurant/bar. It isn't really a restaurant - the soup tasted like it came from Campbells (it wasn't even fully warmed up), and the menu was limited and overpriced. Similarly, the breakfast buffet consisted of powdered eggs that were swimming in water, and some heated up frozen breakfast options. They could do better. Overall, the positives outweighed the negatives, and with a few tweaks the hotel could be one of the best options in Edinburgh. Hopefully the management reads reviews and is able to take action to make this a top choice for the city. read more

I was at the conference facilities they have here for a two-day meeting with work. I have mixed feedback about the place. The rooms we had were decent, spacious and the temperature was fine, and there is a good supply of coffee, teas and snacks throughout the day. The staff in the conference facilities were so lovely too, really helpful. We had a few technical difficulties getting laptops connected to the screens, but staff were on hand to help and fixed any issues quickly. Beforehand, I'd been a little worried about what I might be fed, as we were having lunches there too, and hotels don't always get it right at all when dealing with dietary requirements. I have been fed a bowl of lettuce on far too many occasions for me to expect anything wonderous. I needn't have worried. On the first day, the chef produced a fantastic lunch for me. Starter was grilled asparagus, perfectly done, and main was a delicious warm salad, with roasted peppers, courgette and aubergine, with chunks of nicely done sweet potato, and a lovely spicy-ish sauce. I was delighted. I was looking forward to the second day, as I knew I'd be well-catered for. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Somehow they had forgotten about me, and there was a bit of a drama trying to get something together, what with them insisting on checking every single pre-order form for our large group. They had also set the table with the wrong amount for the group, and one of the staff was pretty much just rude when sorting things out. He also was insistent on declaring that the cullen skink was the 'vegetarian soup', which caused utter confusion for the vegetarians and non-vegetarians at the table who had ordered it. So then followed the usual awkward situation of me sitting with no food while my colleagues sat down to theirs - and of course they didn't want to eat until I had mine, and it's just horrible, because I hate being the centre of attention like that. I didn't get a starter, and they brought out my main before everyone else's. So then I sat and let mine go cold until my colleagues had all been served their mains. I had a version of what I'd received the day before, which was fine. However, I then had an upset tummy for the next two days. Now I'm not saying that they served me something that had dairy in it (I'm badly intolerant) because they were a bit under pressure after forgetting about me, but it does seem a bit of a coincidence, as they produced something suitable for my very specific dietary requirements pretty sharpish, which I was quite surprised at. And also, I'd been fine up until a few hours after lunch. Perhaps I ate something else that upset me. But I was really disappointed because the first day had been really so good. So I'd say they have a wonderful chef (first day, it was a different chef on the second day), but the restaurant side of the operation need to get better at the detail, and consider the impact of their actions. And while the main man in the restaurant was impeccably behaved, some of the other waiting staff need to take a look at their manners. read more

I booked a three night stay using my Hilton Honors points and as a Hilton Diamond member I can say, without equivocation, I have never been treated so well by a staff member. Hugo, the dining room manager, was SO attentive to my mother, daughter and myself! He helped us with directions (printed out a map and added personalized comments), looked into my mothers missing bag (mishandled on an Air France flight), and when we realized she wouldn't be receiving it until well into evening, had some toiletries and a tin of Doubletree's famous chocolate chip cookies sent to the room. Stayed there two nights before taking a sail boat cruise around Scotland. The hotel was clean with fairly small rooms. The most disappointing part was the bathrooms. Showers had half glass doors that made it impossible to shower without getting water all over the floor. Worst part was there was no room whatsoever on the sink to put any personal items and the lighting was terrible. Made it very difficult to put on make up. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating. They let us borrow adapters so we could use our electronics. Cost was $443 US for two nights. Would look elsewhere if we return to Edinburgh. Another note,..although the hotel was easy walking distance to the Castle and Old Town, it is also on the edge of a rather seedy section with strip bars and tattoo parlors. read more

As a Diamond member I was very disappointed with hotel small rooms, staff very unprofessional and not trained properly. The staff charged my credit card for a standard upgrade. Linae a staff member of hotel told me there were no upgrades when I got to my room and called down she changed her statement and said they did have an upgrade for 2 nights. She then with no notice had another staff member (male) come into my room a few days later and pack up all my belongings and my guests another female with no notice by phone, email, text or phone call to the room the staff member left all my belongings in the safe in the room while I was on a tour in Glasgow. Upon returning to my room my key opened the door and all my belongings were gone. My clothes, toiletries, personal items with no notice and when I called the front desk from my room they stated I was moved and needed to come obtain the new keys. I went to the front desk she was not there and a man at the front desk told me he moved all my stuff and was informed by her that it was ok to do so without my knowledge he was kind but stated that he was told I was notified. I told him my passports, money etc were in the safe so he told me to get my stuff that he had already given the room to someone else . The following day I went into the lobby with my guest and many other guests lingering in the lobby and restaurant and Linae came out from the front desk and confronted me in the lobby and started yelling at me in front of my guest and other guests checking in very embarrassing and shocking. I told her I didn't want to speak to I would talk to Hilton directly and she continued to follow me yelling that she told me I had to move I asked where is the call, text, or information that she notified me she said I told you when you checked in. I told her I have never been moved by any staff without notification before she stated she didn't have to notify me that she told me before which is so unprofessional if you have ever had someone enter your room unannounced and take your stuff its alarming and she left the most crucial documents in the safe and didn't disconnect my room key therefore I walked into my old room at 11:00 pm and that room had been given to another guest, imagine if the guest had been in the room when I entered that would have been frightening for them and myself luckily they weren't in the room. My guest stood and witnessed Linae's behavior and she stated to her that she was standing there when we checked in and she stated that if she wanted us to move she would notify us before which seems to be a standard policy and I have had this happen in the past at many hotels but not without notice. She then told my guest that she was wrong as well and began to argue with my guest about what was agreed to I told her to get out of our face or I was calling security. I am appalled that a member of your staff would not only aggressively pursue a guest and a diamond member especially but not apologize and argue a fact that she was not wrong in what she did. Upon initial check in this same staff member Linae told me that my room was already check in and had us wait in the bar so she could find out who checked into my room which could not have been possible as we had just arrived from San Diego CA and they didn't have a credit card on file. I also had a hotel booked in London shortly after this stay and upon check out and was hesitant to stay due to this treatment, however I was treated very well by the staff in London this behavior would have never happened in this hotel nor has happened in any other Hilton I have stayed and I travel extensively. I hope that Hilton will take action to investigate this issue as many other guests witnessed this and I am sure were appalled as well. As any guest a staff member should never treat a guest like that NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCE IS or even if the guest was rude or wrong. She is very unprofessional and aggressive toward Hilton's guests and should be trained properly. read more

the building itself is amazing. the staff are so nice and welcome you with a warm cookie. the rooms are so nice and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting edinburgh. 10/10 for service. 10/10 for everything else. the rooms are great prices and so beautiful with amazingly comfy beds. we had breakfast included which was lovely and well displayed. check out was not too early either! i'm absolutely dying to go again! read more
