And thus, as per the wishes of the birthday girl, we headed to this new one which was closer home and so less driving in this really cold weather. It turned out to be Shiva temple run by the Chinmaya mission. It's pretty neat and tidy. They do have a canteen that cooks dinner on Monday nights, (Mondays are important for Shiva bhaktas) and Fridays. I believe they also have lunch on Sundays but am not sure. Its new and has lot of scope for growth. Am sure at some point in future there will be various traditional arts related classes, or religious stories, to help the younger generation connect with the culture of the country they left behind.

So, as we walked up the steps to the Three Rivers Tibetan Cultural Center, it made me feel relaxed to see the sign" All are welcome here", before I opened the door. We took our shoes off in the small vestibule. I had read that while the beginner meditation classes on Saturday mornings are free, it is suggested that a small donation be made, since this is how the monks rely on keeping the center running, and how they are able to feed and support themselves with basic everyday needs. I donated money in a jar in the hall entranceway. I was warmly greeted by Jonnie. She seated us . Throughout the entire service and meditation session, terms and the service itself, were well-paced and explained, so I didn't feel like an outsider. The concept on intentions, paired with meditation, were eye-opening. The concept behind what real compassion is, was heart-opening.I am excited to go back and try other meditation services at local Buddhist Temples, like the one near me in Monroeville. Three Rivers Tibetan Cultural Center is located in Swissvale and there is free residential street parking.

I can't even see the imam when he is speaking, which makes it near impossible to pay attention. I get to stare at a wall partition and hardly be able to hear because of loud kids screaming around us, both of which only makes my mind tune out and wander so I get next to nothing from the experience. They try to have nice community events but women need to go to the basement which is not an enjoyable place to be, while men get to eat in the nice Musallah. In 25 years of being Muslim, I never had to deal with the segregation I have experienced in every Pittsburgh masjid. And thank God for that, because it helped me remain involved in Muslim communities. But I have stopped attending all masajid since moving to Pittsburgh. The Prophet (saw) had women pray behind men in the same space, without partitions. I do not know why modern Muslims feel they have to "improve upon" the Prophet's ways. That said, I appreciate everyone who works hard for the masjid because I know their work isn't easy, and I pray everyone who goes there consistently and always grows closer to Allah and finds an amazing community. My kids enjoy going there when their friends are there.

It's a very very diverse community and all different backgrounds mix. There's events and classes including some free classes. Imam Chris and the staff and volunteers are great, they really care about the needs of the community and try to keep open dialogue. Imam Chris is very knowledgeable and answers questions from the community or if you're interested to know about Islam. If you haven't come yet, you must! This is a photo of the sisters section. I've been a member of the sangha at TRDC for about a year and a half now, and I really like it. The center is small, but the community is growing and the people are very nice. The center is actually a small apartment, with the living room converted to the main meditation area and the bedroom as a media center. The main weekly practice is a Purification Practice, in English and accessible to beginners, held on Sundays from 11ish am to 12.30ish pm. There are also specialty practices held at other intervals; they just recently added a Full Moon Medicine Buddha practice, which takes place the evening of each full moon; check the website schedule for details. Three Rivers Dharma Center is a friendly and welcoming environment for beginners, the curious, and dedicated practitioners alike. TRDC is associated with the Tibetan Meditation Center in Frederick, MD, the North American home of a number of highly regarded Tibetan lamas. One of these, Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen Rinpoche, is the founder and spiritual director of TRDC. The temple was small yet peaceful. I was disappointed that they ran out of prasadam. However, the priest gave us an apple. Note that there is a small Hanuman temple right outside the main temple.
