I do not recommend this company. I will not shop here again, let me explain... I purchased a "Panache Tiger Stripe Edible Fig Plant - Sweet - 2.5" Pot - Candy Stripe Fig" on 8-7-2019. It produced its first fig on 9-12-2020. Sadly, it was not a panache. I requested a refund or asked that they send me the tree variety I ordered. I provided proof of purchase and pictures of the tree and the fig it produced. Hirt's offered to return my money and reimburse me for shipping, provided I dig it up, wash off all the soil, prune it back, and mail it to them. At a purchase price of $15.48, it was not worth my time to mail it back. I have shopped at Willis Orchards, Stark Bros, Fast Growing Fruit Trees, and others. No every purchase was 100%, but you'll get 5 stars every time for fixing the errors, which is what Willis did when they sent the wrong trees and I didn't get one of the cultivars I ordered. I've ordered several times from here and each time was really not a good experience. I don't know why I continued to order, but I won't again. The customer service is terrible. My orders showed up with items missing or damaged. I messaged and sent photos of my plants upon arrival and got excuses or brushed off. My most recent order I had emailed five times or more with plants that arrived in terrible. I finally got a message back stating "live plant sales online are final". Well, if you send me a dead plant and I email you immediately, good customer service would be to refund the plants. They have a decent selection but dealing with the service isn't worth it. It was my first time ordering from HIrt's and it was money wasted. My order contained 10 plants and three were dead upon arrival. In addition, I was disappointed with the quality and the small sizes of the plants. The strings of grapes included in my order was a two inch cutting while the strings of dolphins were literally 2 tiny strings. The plants are hanging but look unhealthy. I should've check Yelp's reviews or check Armstrong Garden Center before ordering. Shortly after a week later, I came across a full crown of Hoya pubicalyx in a 6-inch pot for only $13.99 at Armstrong while Hirt's 10-leaf cutting in a 4" pot still costs $11.99. I ordered American Chestnut trees on June 8th and I'm in zone 5. My order was processed on June 8th and shipped via USPS on June 9th I received my trees in perfect condition on June 12th the exact delivery date they promised. I'm only giving them 4 stars, because I just planted the trees and want to wait to update my review. The trees were grown from cuttings and were very sturdy. I can't speak for others, but my experience with Hirt's went exceptionally well. Please note, I ordered directly from Hirt's website. Yes, the shipping is expensive, but everything was packed with care and arrived alive! Also, the second week of June worried me that it was getting late in the season to plant trees. UPDATE: 3 days after planting, both trees are healthy and growing. UPDATE #2: 4 weeks since planting and both trees are healthy and growing like crazy. I did end up protecting them from the direct sunlight with some plastic fencing as the leaves started getting sunburned. The fencing made all the difference. See photo. read more

I decided to call and the lady attending the phone just hung up on me when I was talking to her extremely politely about all the plants I've ordered are unhealthy with damaged and curled leaves! This review applies to their handling of online sales, not their retail garden store. The good-- Hirt's provided a reasonably easy-to-use website to order their plants, and the actual shipping time to receipt was very good. The sad-- Hirt's, handles customer dissatisfaction with ordered products in a somewhat disingenuous manner. They do not appear to be overly concerned with putting forward a good customer-centric reputation to ensure that online purchasers become repeat customers. The bad-- They ship their plants with masking tape covering top of pot, placed loosely in shipping box filled with Styrofoam popcorn. The following is a copy of my dissatisfaction with a recently ordered plant purchase. Hirt's only repeated response (which did not answer any of my questions) was to let them know if any of the shipped plants survived, then they'd replace/refund that plant(s)). I've ordered from Hirt's twice now despite requiring my order be shipped to Arizona - and each time, I've been impressed with their packaging and shipping of these precious goods! I've had to up-pot or replace soil, but otherwise have been very pleased with my experience! I received my first order with one missing item - I called and immediately got in touch with someone who was willing to rectify the situation with little difficulty. So I got the bright idea to plant a hedge using Fire Light hydrangeas and bought a dozen small plants from Hirts. Initially I was pleased but these plants failed to thrive and as I was informed by the vendor they have a 90 day refund policy so I am out of luck. Pots were not 4" pots as advertised on Walmart.com but 2.5" x 3". The difference is 16square inches verses 7.5square inches per pot! And the pots were not even completely full (they were less than half full). So the net received was less than a fourth of the 4" pots advertised! As well, someone at Hirt's Garden cut (pinched) all the stems off - ALL Are pinched off!!! These plants will not bloom this year! The Hirt's customer service (I am assuming owner) responded that the plants are 'Dormant', Hello the plants were supposedly from a greenhouse. And why chop them up and cut all the stems short? They are only 1inch square each and with all the stems pinched off short killing the stems. They looked as if they were dug out of their neighbor's garden in the middle of December in Chicago or Delaware. THESE DID NOT COME OUT OF A GREENHOUSE. IT IS MARCH HERE, SPRINGTIME. THE OWNER IS AN IMBECILE and refused to credit my account back. Also, they shipped them via USPS!!! And took a week to arrive. I paid for the shipping!!!! It seems like it is hit and miss with them. I've ordered twice from this place and I've received some good plants and some in terrible condition. Including a banana plant that did not look at all as they advertise it. I'm still trying to recover it. I recently placed an order for a Brazilian Philodendron plant and I cannot tell you how deeply disappointed I am in it. The soil is extremely over watered to the point it has the consistency of a bowl of chowder, there's muck all over the leaves, and the plant is already showing signs of drowning, theres also several leaves with old tearing and other damage. I expect things to go a little rough and tumble through the shipping process no matter how much care is taken during packaging, but I didn't pay for a rehab project and that is what I have received. I'm not only disappointed, but furious. I will no longer be using this company for any plant purchases in the future. This isn't the first plant I've had to rehab from them. In a previous order number, my tradeascantia was also a rehab job- broken into multiple pieces, all of the soil out of the pot and trapped in the bubble wrap. I chalked that up to shipping wear and tear. It happens. I understand. The first issue I let slide. This issue is utterly inexcusable and I will no longer be doing business with this nursery. Full stop. I contacted customer service only to be further disappointed. After three emails airing my grievances, I've received literally 2 sentences in response. It makes me wonder how much the care about their plants, their name and reputation, and their customers. read more

I have had mixed experiences with Hirt's. Pros: Their shipping is fast, prices are great, the online selection seems to be much more varied than other vendors and constantly updated. They do send heat packs for free, which is fantastic. Anytime ive had an issue with an order (will explain that in the "cons" section) they promptly answer my emails and send a refund, although as others have said their attitude is extremely indifferent and they don't seem to be making strides towards fixing their issues. Cons: 1. I ordered a "bamboo shoot sansevieria"/"rocket sansevieria" (AKA- sansevieria cylindrical) THREE times now. Yup, lol. Three separate times. I was never sent this plant. Each time they said it was "out of stock", even though I ordered it and it was in stock at the time of ordering. I literally stalked their website and got it as soon as it became available. I should also add, the plant was just MISSING from my order. I received no email notification, and there was NO packing slip included that said "out of stock- refund issued". I had to reach out to them to get confirmation that I was refunded. 2. I ordered their "French Staghorn Fern"- Platycerium Lemoinei. What I received was a standard, common Platycerium Bifurcatum. I did not reach out to Hirt's about this, I just let it go. Shame on me, I so should have said something but I was so busy at the time. I did, however, make an attempt to leave a review on their website- but it was never "approved". They kept deleting it and wouldn't allow it on their site LOL. 3. I ordered a "Calathea Dottie" which is a gorgeous hybrid with almost black leaves and hot pink markings- similar to a Calathea Medallion. What I received was the standard Calathea Medallion. (should mention that there was a price difference on their website- the 4" Dottie was $9.99 and the 4" Medallion was $7.99) I paid $9.99 for a 4" Dottie and received a 4" Medallion. I was actually VERY upset about this because ive wanted a Calathea Dottie for so long and the photo on their listing was absolutely a Dottie. I emailed them and they said "sorry for the mistake you've been refunded for the incorrect plant". I later checked their site, and they had taken down the listing for the Calathea Dottie after I emailed them. (LOL) I do believe they think people wont notice or something- they are notorious for listing things not actually in stock and/or listing things under the wrong name in hopes that people will not notice. For people, like me, who collect plants- this can be really frustrating! We spend so much time searching for a plant just to not receive it or to receive the wrong one! In the meantime I could have gotten said plants elsewhere but I ordered from Hirt's and now theyre out of stock elsewhere or sold out! Typical my life! hahha I also really dislike how they don't send a notification email or AT LEAST a packing slip that explains why you are missing plants from your order. Its frustrating to have to reach out each time something isn't included. Just add a packing slip saying that things were out of stock by the time your order was fulfilled. They DO fill orders VERY quickly, so im shocked things would be "sold out" by then. Doesn't make sense but oookaayyy. As others have mentioned, the packing definitely has room for improvement. I cant stand the masking tape over the top soil because it peels off leaves when you try to remove it. I wish they would just send things bare root because their soil truly is TERRIBLE. I live in California, so you know that plants coming from Hirts in Ohio are going to have a significant journey to get to me. That said, whenever a plant doesn't make it, they promptly issue a refund. The refund includes the cost of freight for the plant. Great customer service! This company is a lie. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!!! I bought a RED FREDDY GENOVESE BASIL from them but they send a PURPLE BASIL instead. The picture on their website is red and even the tag that came with the plant is red. I was obviously upset and send them an email and the guy kept insisting that the picture on the tag is purple. The picture and the plant look different and they insist on me paying for the return shipping if I want to return it which I believe is not justified since they were the one who send the wrong basil to me.
