The plants were improperly packaged and arrived broken and covered in dirt. I notified the vendor same day by email and sent detailed photos with a description. He responded with a request to send additional photos once the plants were cleaned up and re-potted. Odd request, considering that the damage is clearly visible - but I complied. There were 4 plants total in the order - 2 were badly damaged. I asked for a refund or replacement on the 2 damaged ones - no response received. I've purchased from many nurseries before, and this has been the worst experience thus far. I'm never going to order from Hirts again. Also, shipping cost was the highest I've seen, so it's amazing that other small, family-owned nurseries manage to ship plants for less and everything arrives undamaged and healthy. read more

Almost everything DIED. I made the mistake of buying twice from this lame place. Bare root strawberries, 2 varieties, 20 plants, 3 survived. Jasmine burned up in 70-80 degree, partly cloudy weather. Over half my order of plants were damaged because of packaging or already dying. The Blueberry tree I ordered was infested with aunts and is dying. I contact Matt Hirt via email. Letting him know i was dissatisfied with how they were packaged. Over 20 plants crammed into one box. Several broken and all the tomato plants were almost dead. He asked me to send photos of damaged plants and the aunt infestation. After sending photos AND video of aunts in plant he presumes to tell me he doesnt know what these photos are in regard to?? I usually never leave bad reviews, and out of 500+ plant transactions, and over 1000+ total transactions, ive left only positive feedback with the exception of two occasions- both with Hirts- total SCAMMERS... Last summer in 2021, they tried to sell me a plant advertised as a 4th Of July Tomato. What arrived was a tomato labeled 4th Of July/Early Girl- which are two entirely DIFFERENT varieties- the listing said nothing about "early girl".. When I asked them about this, they said they were the same type- but when I sent them credible sources proving otherwise, they then proceeded to ignore every email I sent- even to this day. This year, I made the mistake of giving them a 2nd chance, and I'll NEVER do that again. Bought 97 bucks worth of plants that were blackened and dead when they arrived. I took over a dozen pictures as soon as I opened the package and sent them to Hirts. They didn't even bother to respond regarding a $100 order. So much for the Hirts Gaurantee, right? Anyway, I had to go through the hassle of filing a claim with eBay to get a refund since the seller was ignoring every message of mine despite me being nothing but kind, with me even asking "how can we resolve this amicably?" several times. they just want their money, they don't care about online customers. If they can trick you into selling you plants that aren't true to type, they've demonstrated that they are not only willing to do that but STILL do(check out their ebay listing for the 4th Of July/Early Girl Tomato plant- its STILL there, they had to add Early Girl to the advertisement after I reported them for fake advertising last year, but theyre still continuing to sell a Tomato that they clearly don't know the true variety of). They've shown they'll ignore polite and reasonable customers. 0 stars. Avoid at all costs. They are the only nursery of dozens I've worked with to ever disappoint me enough that I felt like I was being genuinely scammed. Go with a reputable nursery like Burpee, Clovers, Bonnie Plants, or any other sources that don't act like online scam artists, as they demonstrated twice to me. People don't realize that unfortunately when you buy plants online it can be a gamble. Plants are delicate and it's not always the distributors fault, even thought it's frustrating when your plant doesn't come as expected. Ordered 5 plants all 5 were unhealthy. They ship you already dead plants or bug infested plant. All 5 Plants was disappointing regarding their well being. The worst was probably the string of hearts. It came in a tiny pot, not just that it looks like it was recently place into the pot due to soil was very loose and hardly any root system. All soil fell apart once it was take out. The other one is the fallopian japonica. It say comes in a gallon pot, which it does but the stem is cut off and dead. There are new sprouts with hardly any leafs. And the remaining leafs looks like it's been eaten by bugs. Giving the description of the pot size it's right to expect a much bigger plant rather than new sprouts. The pineapple Mint has many blotch leafs. The fatsia japonica also has bug eaten leafs. And the oxalis are like baby sprouts that the leafs falls apart and has which fungus on something on them. For the price I paid I would expect something larger or at least heathy. None of these plants looks healthy at all and it would probably take years to recover if they even survive. Overall a very disappointing experience from this nursery. Looks like all the plants sent out was the ones that nobody wanted and was left over for a long time. Ordered Sweet Million Cherry Tomato seeds from this place. Not a single seed was viable. Tried to germinate 30 seeds without a single one growing. I'm a 54 year vegetable gardening Master Gardener. I filled out the comment section on their website explaining the problem and got an email saying, Sorry, all sales are final. I just received my order of 2 x Strawberry Mint - Grow Indoors or Out - Live Plant - 3" Pot 1 x Hirt's Gardens® Button Fern - Pellaea rotundifolia - Unusual/Easy to Grow-4" PotI'm not happy with the condition of two of the plants. The Button Fern is brown, dried up and basically burnt up. One of the Strawberry Mint's arrived dry as a bone with just a paper towel stuck around the pot and not wrapped in plastic wrap as the others? It is also extremely leggy and not what I was hoping for or what I would consider a nice healthy plant. I've included two pictures of the plants both the Button Fern and the Strawberry Mint and would appreciate a refund for the two plants and a portion of the shipping costs since these plants weren't packed very well which may have lead to their demise.Thanks for your understanding. I was wary of ordering due to the inconsistent reviews of the quality of shipping from Hirt's, but I've ordered twice over the past two weeks and have had a great experience. I first ordered directly from their website, and the second time from etsy (both times one had a plant that I wanted that the other did not, so it's worth checking both inventories). Both packages came with a heat pack, plants wrapped in bubble wrap, and padded into the box with bubble wrap. The plants that came directly from the website had the masking tape wrap up, which let a lot of soil out of the pots, and the plants from etsy were heavy duty wrapped in a thin plastic film that kept everything in place and supported the stems - definitely prefer that packaging! I also made a stupid mistake when ordering from etsy and didn't update my email address. I contacted them immediately, and they fixed it by the next morning. Both packages had a bit of plant damage, but I'm not sure how else they could have remedied their packaging to avoid it. I'd say that's more likely an aspect of handling during shipping. I did expect there to be a bit more on the string of hearts (it was just a short strand with 5 pairs of leaves) but it looks healthy so I'm optimistic. There's a lot of variability in the size of plants from what I can see in the photos. Overall, I'm really happy and definitely plan to order again. read more

If you want a product that is advertised as one thing, and then get something different, order form Hirts. After ordering 4 inch potted blackberries, they sent completely small plants in a container about half that size. After pointing this out and requesting a replacement, Hirt's said just plant them. When this was pointed out, Hirt's said the container should be measured on the diagonal, despite the fact that American Standard for Nursery Stock states and I quote, "Dimension measurements for square containers containers shall be taken along one side and not diagonally." Then, they added the that pot was a 4 inch pot because it had a 4 on the bottom. Of course the 4 is not a measurement, but simply the model number of the pot. I just received my plants from Hirt's via USPS. They were VERY nicely packed in a cardboard box, individually wrapped in bubble wrap to prevent any damage to the plants. Standard shipping was very quick and it only took a few days to receive the plants out of state. I am very impressed with the condition of the plants (catmint and ivy) - they are all beautifully green and healthy. During a time like this, where theres a global pandemic and we cant shop in person, ordering online was perfect. I have to be honest - there are quite a few mixed reviews out there about Hirt's, so I was a little nervous ordering, especially given the low prices. But sometimes I take the opinions of others with a grain of salt (some people are just never happy) and ordered a few small plants I've been searching for to add to my collection through their website. And let me just say - I was pleasantly surprised! My new plant babies arrived safely and so quickly! Opening that box totally made my day!!! All of them were well-packed, healthy and arrived in beautiful condition! If I'm splitting hairs, there was one tiny leaf on the crocodile fern I had to prune, but I think it had been that way prior to shipment. I bought a small variegated lemon tree from Hirt's and was disappointed with the quality of the plant that I received but thought if i planted it and took care of it, the plant would improve. I emailed customer service with my concerns and never rec'd a response. I planted the tree and kept it alive for about 6 mos until it died. I have several other lemons and limes which flourished during the same time frame time so I can only guess that the initial quality of the plant that was sent to me was as poor as I had suspected it to be. I called customer service when the plant died and spoke to a guy who sounded like he had just woken up w/ the disposition to match. He was rude and unpleasant to say the least and refused any discussion regarding a replacement saying that they had no more trees in stock and hung up the phone. I have had both great service and absolutely terrible service. I have sent an email about the same plant 3 times. He keeps asking for the order number. It is in the subject line of the email and I included the original order confirmation that THEY sent me when I placed the order, with the email so they could reference the order quickly. They won't respond, provide a plant, or provide a refund. I spent hundreds of dollars the first year I found them, and would have spent hundreds more if this didn't happen. I went ahead and gave them two stars since a lot of what they shipped to me was okay. The two items that have been bad, make the whole experience not worth it to me. I will have to take my gardening obsession to other reliable suppliers with better customer service and better policies regarding problem resolution. read more

I ordered 6 plants from Hirt's Gardens. They arrived in horrible condition - see pix. I planted them immediately. Two of the plants looked completely dead, one of the tops was broken without any roots, and the other one looked dead without roots as well. The note that came with the plants said they may go dormant but plant them anyway and they'll come back. It's been over a month and the two plants remain dead while the other plants are growing and thriving now. I contacted Alan Hirt at Hirt's gardens and sent him a picture of the plants upon arrival. He said he wanted to see the plants. I said I sent a picture. He said he needed to see them now. I said they are dead, there's nothing but dirt, no response. Days later, I asked him if he was going to replace the two dead plants, no response. Today after checking my bank account, I found a refund for the two plants. read more

Wow, this company works hard! I have made two orders from their website and one on Amazon. When my seeds from Amazon didn't germinate and one of my perennials didn't live, Matt responded to my email the same day, refunded for both items even though the seeds are not guaranteed, replaced the live plant. When I made a 2nd order on their website, one of my plants was shortened on the quantity. Matt responded immediately and not only replaced the one plant, but added two more of it. Horrible experience! I ordered a Plumeria pudica. It arrived fast but was infected with spider mites and sooty mold. I sent a photo and an email (very politely) to which Al Hirt finally replied "Try some horticultural oil". Yep, that was it. Terrible service, terrible product. I received plants from this company in May - 4 of the same kind. They were a bit pricey but they came and were in good shape and lived. I ordered $130 worth of more plants and seeds and had to pay $50 shipping. The box came late. Not unusual, but $50 for shipping I would assume next day. Everything was smashed into one box and heavily saturated with water. There was 1 plant that was tiny but did not have any issues. One plant was full of mold, the others were either full of dead leaves, the leaves fell off, the leaves were yellow, or the stems were broken. Contacted the company and they refunded JUST the moldy plant. Contacted them again and was told they do not refund dead or dying plants. What?! I literally took the photos within 5 minutes of unpacking them. If I saw them at a greenhouse, they would be in the garbage bin. This review is about their online store. The Venus flytrap, which my son was beyond excited to get, arrived mostly dead. I cut the dead parts, which was almost all of it, and did the additional instructions listed on the tag. It's six days later and will be 100% dead within a few days. I called the store and their phone number was "answered" by their fax machine half a dozen times. Then I read reviews here. I'm sorry I didn't read them before buying. Made two large online orders on their site and am so unimpressed that I feel obliged to write a review (for the first time). 1. Plants were shipped in a prompt manner -- probably because they were simply thrown into a box with some packing peanuts and tape over the soil. Very little care in packaging. 2. Many of the plants arrived in poor condition and much smaller than advertised. I ordered a moon valley pilea in a 4" pot -- the plant I received looked nothing like the picture on the site. It has about 3 leaves. I moved it into a 3" pot, since it also hardly has any roots. I emailed Hirt's about this, and the curt response I received: "give the plant time, it will grow." Nothing more. While I am, in fact, aware that plants grow, I don't think that selling a tiny seedling in a too-large pot is honest business. I also bought a $20 alocasia in a 6-inch pot. While the plant was not nearly as full as the one in their picture, it seemed healthy enough, though the soil was pretty dense and poorly draining, so I lifted the plant out to change the soil. Lo and behold, all the roots at the bottom of the pot were mushy and rotted! I spent about 30 min. cleaning up the rotted roots--hopefully the plant will survive. Then, I decided it might be a good idea to check the roots of the other plants. While shaking the (extremely dense, water-retaining, inappropriate) soil off an Easter cactus, several huge black bugs crawled out! I quarantined the plant on an empty windowsill but it's not doing too well. And now I'm kind of scared to check any of the other plants. 3. One of the plants I ordered (a fusion white calathea if it matters) was simply not sent. It appears that the plant went out of stock as it's no longer listed on the site. However, I was never contacted about this, and in the case where an item paid for is not available, I think that providing a prompt refund (WITHOUT prodding from the customer) is a basic responsibility for a business! However, I had to send two emails to the company before a refund was issued, two days after the order was received. Perhaps they were hoping I wouldn't notice? In short, probably one of the worst online shopping experiences I've had. Communications with Hirt were extremely unapologetic, and this business seems brazenly and complacently unscrupulous. While Hirt's prices may seem pretty good, and their selection large, I would urge people not to support this business, as it's simply not a good or honest one. read more

I recently bought a Prayer Plant from Hirt's. I wasn't too impressed with the experience. The plant was shipped promptly, but the packaging was awful. The box got crushed easily because Hirt's didn't use enough packing peanuts inside. Also, the tape on the exterior of the box started to come off. The plant wasn't damaged in transit, but was quite dull looking. Normally Prayer Plants are a deep shade of green. The one I got appeared to be very "washed out" with a beige tinge. Not brown and crispy, but maybe had more sun / less water than it should have at their growing facility. The plant was a nice size, however. It's been a few weeks since I received it, and with proper care it's starting to look better. I wouldn't buy from Hirt's again. read more

I ordered a fifty dollar plant in a 3 gallon pot. Black beauty elderberry, if anyone cares. I received a tiny twig in a maybe 4 inch pot. When I called I was told they were unable to do anything on the phone and I needed to send an email. When I called back nearly four hours later (2/3 of their business day)I was verbally accosted by two employees. I was treated as if I was in the wrong, my concerns were scoffed at and I was eventually hung up on. I was accused of being rude and talking over people, but that is more projection than truth. I talked over them when they repeatedly spouted nonsense. My concerns were not treated as valid and once I get the shrubbery, I will never do business with Hirt's Gardens again. I was told IF there was a mistake it would be fixed and my email would be answered eventually. They don't deal with customer email, like mistakes, until they get all their money for the current day. If you paid them before whatever day you contacted them, you go to the end of the line. And really, why not? They already have your money. read more

Whoa! I'm a bit surprised by all the negative reviews, but yes, they do affect me. I've ordered from Hirt's and have been entirely happy with the results. But I'm certainly not going to question the experiences of other customers, especially given that these reviewers appear to be entirely credible. I have ordered several times from Hirt's via Amazon, and a couple times when the order was for a larger plant that I thought might have smaller shipping charges going through Hirt's itself, given that I live in extreme Southwest Virginia, the part contiguous with Kentucky and not so far from Ohio, where Hirt's is based. I've had good experiences all around, but I am now uncertain if that is simply a matter of less time in shipping, given that I'm not so far from Ohio. Or what. So although my own experiences have been good, I don't want to dismiss the experiences that other people have had. I have ordered live plants that came to me very healthy and obviously well tended. I'm quite happy with them, and the price was fair. I was impressed by the fact that Hirt's included heat packs to ensure that my Meyer Lemon trees got to me without damage from the cold. Some other vendors don't do that kind of thing. I frankly had not expected to see negative reviews here. And yes, the experience of others does affect me. But all I can say is that my experience has been very different. read more
