Here is my one and only complaint and it's major enough I knocked the stars down to 3 rather than 5. The store is often a mess. Huge boxes of books blocking walkways. Carts of books blocking your way. As well, the shelves are often a mess. The place looks like a rummage sale rather than a book store. That's ok but then they need to charge rummage sale prices.

The contents of the store made me feel like I was living out a wonderful dream. The shelves were lined with things from my favorite amines and books, especially Harry Potter. I just told them I have two nieces and their ages and the personal attention I received was great. Her suggestions were useful in aiding in my decisions. The selection in toys are what sets them apart from a big chain retail store. They have items that a young kid would get more out of then what you'll find else where. If you like WonderFair in Lawrence, this is a redux of that, carrying art prints, books, zines, stickers and pins, shirts, local souvenirs and rad miscellaneous novelties. There's even a delightfully nostalgic video rental room in the back, and for $12/mo, you can rent as many dvds, vhs or blurays as you want (2 at a time, of course). Kevin is usually the dude behind the counter and he offers great suggestions on movies and can probably tell you anything you want to know about the area. LGBTQ and blue-friendly, Vortex is a very welcome little oasis in Wichita and I hope folks take advantage of it! A note on parking: While free, there are limited parking spots in front and along the block, so we tend to park in the big lot behind The Monarch and cross the street.
