Went to the Seilacoom Historical Museum for the first time today. As far as I can tell, there are…read moreactually three buildings to tour. The main musuem on Rainier Street houses nice displays of the history of the area. Downstairs there are touchable items that illustrate daily life in the olden days--kitchen, school, quilting and barber shop. There is also a small gift shop with nice items. The staff was friendly and knowledgable. Just a few steps away is building nubmer two--Nathaniel Orr's Wagon Shop. There are two wagons on display and a large display of old tools, some of which I'd never seen before. Three wall mounted, hand cranked phones are interconnected and able to be used--again, a first for me. The docent there today was Buzz and he was just the best--personable and a wealth of information. I bought one of his handmade wooden tops that was made from an old plum tree of Mr. Orr's. The last building to see is Bair's Drugstore a short block away. This has some very nice displays of things that would be sold in a drugstore. They also sell refreshments which I wish I had known about beforehand so I could have gone in hungry. I guess I'll just have to plan a second visit. I also enjoyed the general old-timey feel of the town, seeing some beautiful gardens like my great grandmother's on our short walk around, and the wonderful view of Puget Sound from just about everywhere there. The Wagon Shop is always free, and very hands on for kids and adults. Our girls LOVE it! The Wagon Shop has been one of our favorite museum spots because it's so kid friendly. (Our 2nd personal favorite kid friendly museum is up here in Monroe- the Western Washington Heritage Museum- kids can drive a tractor, run large belts, grind corn, etc) At the wagon shop they always offer a wagon bouncy ride for kids :) There are two buildings to their town's historical museum that come with admission 1. the wagon shop's owner's house from the 1800s (everything is original), and then the actual museum next door (not the wagon shop). To visit all 3 museums would take up an afternoon! Check out their website because they do have events and sometimes kids and adult crafting classes. Support their effort! Like the other reviewer mentioned.... Go down the way and look up the Bair Bistro (it has an apothecary sign out front). I never realized it was a cafe, and it is so fun to hang out in. They said the Steilacoom trolley used to go past this place around 100 yrs ago. It's a museum you can eat in! One of our family's favorite Steilacoom traditions has become their apple cider press party. I think it's called Apple Craze? It's like the 1st Sunday of October- check their website. Come early, but wow, so many old apple presses to watch and use!

Our Gondolier (John) had a beautiful voice for serenading us around the Harbor. Felt like we were floating the waterways in Venice. As more of my friends have crossed this age milestone, I've seen the full spectrum of responses: people who downplay it and later wish they'd done something special, people who throw huge parties and regret the stress and effort, and people who choose extreme adventures only to find the adrenaline crash leaves them feeling depleted afterward, bringing '50' home in a hard way. This struck exactly the right balance. It was special enough to feel like a true celebration, offered a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and created memories (and amazing photos) I'll carry with me for years. While it's certainly not inexpensive, once you see the amount of equipment, preparation, effort, infrastructure, expertise, and care that goes into each flight, the pricing feels more than reasonable. It's a significant experience without being financially out of reach. If you're looking for a memorable way to celebrate a milestone event--or simply want an extraordinary experience--I highly recommend it.
