It has taken me a while, but Ybor City has grown on me. If I look at it at face value, I would think it is not the best of areas in Tampa. But when I learn more and look at all it has to offer, it really has a lot to offer. It is a historical city with a lot of character. There's a melting pot of descents whom have settled here including those from Spain, Cuba, Germany, & Italy. It also was the Cigar Capital of the World way back then. What I like most about it is the research I have found on its haunted places. For example, the Cuban Club, King Corona Cigars, La France, the resale store next door from it, are just a few to name. When I now walk through Ybor City, I think about how it would have been walking through it back in time. Ybor City district is where many of the city parades are such as the Knight Parade happening this weekend, as well as a Xmas Parade. They also have a Farmers Market on Saturdays and many festivals throughout the year. Ybor definitely wants to instill their culture and history on all who visit. Once upon a time, Ybor was home to immigrants from Cuba, Spain, and Italy in the 1880s.Ybor is diverse, has lots of different restaurants (Columbia Restaurant: authentic Spanish/Cuban food, Bernini: Italian cuisine, Acropolis Greek: their gyro and side salad is big enough for two and so good, Samurai Blue: sushi and affordable bento boxes, etc.) and cigars to offer. My experiences have been nothing than spectacular despite safety concerns and always traveled with my friends. I love walking down the busy alleyway, absorbing the night life, people watching and encountering different personalities. SATURDAY MARKET (4/5): 9am - 3pm every Sat. and during summer hours from May to Sept. the market is open from 9am-1pm. There are many vendors offering reasonably priced vegetables, homemade gifts and yummy offerings for purchase, such as candles, soaps, rum cakes, chocolates, honey, beef jerky, cupcakes, bakery goods and different fruits and vegetables etc. It is a fairly small market, but I love getting out early in the AM for a quiet moment to enjoy the fresh weather as the breeze sweeps across your face and walking around to pickup some fruit and veggies. The nice thing about Ybor is that there's so much to do, so you can easily bar hop from one place to another, soak in different vibes of each restaurant, attend a concert at the Orpheum (see a band up close and personal), grab a couple drinks there and finish off with a couple slices of pizza from New York New York Pizza for a fun and inexpensive night. I love the fact you can go karaoking with friends late into the night surrounded by a bunch of random, drunk people that'll cheer you on despite how bad of a singer you are. lol The homemade syrups, Smoked Old Fashioned and Whiskey Sour, from Big Easy are my favorite go to drinks and easily my weakness! I recommend paying for all day access to electric tram if you are exploring the area and not sure where you want to start and on the plus side, there's a/c! :) There's so many restaurant choices to choose from and I've not had the chance to try them all and plan to with my coworkers due to proximity from work and also taking advantage of cheap drinks during Happy Hour! Ybor is a fun place to go if you want to casually observe people while enjoying a cocktail or two sitting on the patio. Your taste buds won't be disappointed, with exceptions to a few restaurants that have slow service or/and not consistent food (I'm eyeing you Stone Soup Company and La Tropicana Cafe). I feel like there's a lot of different cuisines to offer even if you have particular tastes and drink preferences. Ybor City is a section of Tampa which is northeast of downtown, and it's best known for Cuban cigar-rolling factories, fantastic architecture, terrific restaurants, lots of nightclubs and bars. Ybor City was founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers and was populated by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Spain, Cuba, and Italy. For the next 50 years, workers in Ybor City's cigar factories would roll millions of cigars annually. Once a year Ybor City is the setting for the Krewe of the Knights of Sant' Yago Parade. The Knight Parade as it is better known, falls two weeks after the main Gasparilla Pirate Invasion, and it hosts about 100,000 revelers along 7th Avenue between Nuccio Parkway and 23rd Street. The parade begins at about 7pm and lasts until 9, although the partying crowd will stay late into the night as they progress from the parade route, to restaurants, to bars. This year the Knight Parade happened to fall on Valentines Day, but that didn't stop thousands of people from turning out to view the 125 different floats, and try their luck at catching strands of beads. The parade is free and open to the public -- with the exception of the grandstands (reserved seating). This is a tamer, family-friendly event compared to the main Gasparilla Pirate Invasion and Parade along Bayshore Boulevard, and so there were lots of kids in attendance. Historic Ybor City is not unlike a lot of places around the country 7th street and the surrounding streets are synonymous with having a party and designated as the place to drink and raise a little hell if you're not from the area without the fear of running into anyone you know if that's your intentions. If you're wondering if this is your thing imagine Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Beale Street in Memphis or Duval Street in Key West and you'll get an idea of what you can expect, I must justify this analogy with Ybor City Historic District is probably not to that level but it's along the same lines. In saying that, one should take the same per-cautions when visiting this area at night, a few friends staying together is not a bad idea. I do like the architectural influences, the balconies, overlooking the streets, lots of old brick work, tables on the sidewalks and the overall wide openness as well as the wide variety of characters roaming the streets, you definitely get a perspective of today's society. This may not be a place I'd visit every weekend but neither are the other ones I mentioned earlier. If you're in Tampa this is definitely worth a little of your time. read more

Not sure why Ybor City has such a bad rating. Ybor City has so much history and a myriad of things to do. There are definitely great restaurants that can be found here. Some of the better ones are La Terrazza, Bernini's, Samurai Blue, and La Creperia. It would be a crime not to mention one of the staples of Tampa's history, the Columbia Restaurant which first opened in 1905. There is something for everyone here: nightclubs, hookah bars, tattoo parlors, cigar bars, boutique shops, art galleries, and so much more. Every Saturday morning, there is the Ybor Saturday Market where you can shop for local goods and groceries. You can visit the Ybor City Museum and the Tampa Baseball Museum is opening up in 2015. I've been coming to Ybor city since I was a young woman. I started coming out here when Tracks was a bar and the city really was hard and gritty. It's nice to see the clean up it's gone through, how Centro Ybor has made it a great place to congregate, and more clubs and bars populate the strip up and down. Truly this is the place to come if you want to explore. There are comedy clubs, good places to eat and multi-screen cinema's to catch the newest releases. There are pan handlers and bible thumpers that hang out in Ybor, so be on guard for those, but otherwise, enjoy the shopping, the dining and the dancing that can be found. read more

We almost didn't come here, I read a lot of reviews on Trip Advisor about Ybor City and they weren't great. It seemed a lot of people are concerned about safety and I don't fault anybody for that. Before we moved to FL, we lived in Los Angeles (Venice Beach), so we are a bit more used to an urban vibe if you will! Not that we enjoy it, but we had seen a lot during our time in CA, so this place didn't seem TOO bad to me when we visited during the day. Before our visit, I talked to a couple of Saint Petersburg locals and they recommended avoiding this area after dark. We like a drink or two, but hubby and I aren't nightlife people. This area certainly does have a party vibe to it, but it was fairly quiet when we visited on a weekend day around 2 PM. A lot of reviewers compared this to New Orleans, where I have not been. I can see why people say this is similar to the Louisiana hot spot, but I felt there was a Southern California vibe to it. Ybor City reminded me of places like Old Town Pasadena. I really enjoyed seeing the buildings and just taking in the area. The architecture seemed unique for FL and I liked that. We ended up eating here, there is a good selection of bars and some restaurants. There is also a block with gay bars in Ybor City, which is always cool to see, especially in the south. Overall, an interesting place to visit, but maybe best to do so during the day! read more

History can be a rare thing in Florida but Ybor is definitely a piece of history for us all to enjoy! Immigrants from three main places, Italy, Cuba, and Spain, came here to find work and make a new life for themselves and their families. Just take a stroll through the main streets and examine the buildings carefully, imagining them as they once were. Nowhere in the area will you find such an eclectic set of clubs, ranging from the Ritz to the Castle. Then, get some great food perhaps at Bernini or Samurai Blue, down a few drinks followed by a few more, and finish with a tattoo to remember forever! read more

Lets just get over it, the parking is rough. If you park off strip there are some spaces with no time limit and no fees. So just go early and drive around a bit. Once you make your way to the strip there is so much to look at. Stores and bars and restaurants. Some old and not so up to date and others newly put together. It is an old area so don't expect it to be new and sparkly. Think N'Awlins' on a good night. Watch for the panhandlers and the homeless. Generally the homeless could care less about you however, the panhandlers can be aggressive and loud. This can be intimidating to some. There are signs posted on buildings about this. And feel free to call the police if you do feel like your safety is at risk. Never has this happened to us but we go during the day and have seen little ruckus. It gets a bit randy the later it gets. This is a cigar mecca, or used to be. They are doing their best to keep it up but the economy hasn't been helping a lot and many people are sadly no longer supportive of the cigar culture which is how Ybor got its start. Study up on the history of Ybor to embrace it entirely. Love it. Always something to look at. read more

Cuban food can be found here. A cuban sandwich or the devil crab rolls... So during the day, you can stroll down this street. Stop in cigar shops and watch them roll cigars. Eat. Drink. A few stores. A movie theater. Visitors center. But that's about it. During the day you're either there to eat or get cigars.... Now night time is a different story. Night clubs. Bars. Think cuban version of bourbon street... but its an experience to be had! Something always going on. Live music. Outdoor everything. I always have a good time when I go! Some town feel with lots of cigar shops and thrift stores. It's a good area to walk around and talk to friendly people. Give it a try! It took me a while to take on what seemed to me like the very daunting task of reviewing the Ybor City District. There's just so much...so many things to do! Stores, restaurants, bars, cafes, museums, landmarks all catering to different styles and demographics. Ybor City has a little bit of everything all tied together with a very signature Ybor "feel." Whenever I have guests I take them to Ybor, it's not always a hit with them, although always a hit with me! It really depends on your mood. During the day it's very picturesque. All my instagram loving friends love going to Ybor when they visit to get that perfect shot. It may be a picture of them in a little brick covered alley way with greenery growing through the walls and down the firescape...maybe it's the graffiti showcasing some latin history, at times its just the street with its iron balconies and the people walking around. Personally, I try to catch shots of the Ybor roosters running around :). I love going into the cigar shops and talking to the workers rolling the cigars...such interesting stories! All while sipping my coladito, of course. There is a very distinct Cuban feel to the whole area that's so fun to experience. At night time...well, it's party time. There are so many bars in the area, most of them casual, jeans and a top are fine at most places. Me? I tend to dress up and need to be very careful with heels because there's a lot of bar hopping through brick cobblestone type streets. There really is something for everyone..there's the hip hop clubs, the rock style clubs, electronic clubs (so fun!) you want to sing? theres karaoke, you want to salsa? theres salsa and latin music clubs, you want to dance on a bar? theres that too (only if you're a girl), want to watch sports? so many places both indoor and outdoor, hookah? yep they have that too. Let's not forget the food! So many restaurants! So many types of food...Cuban, Greek, Mexican, Peruvian, Argentinian, Italian, American, Steakhouses...you'll find something. It's wheelchair friendly enough for those in wheelchairs or with friends in wheelchairs. It's no fun pushing a wheelchair through brick roads or railroad tracks but theres no overly high ramps and most upstairs establishments have an elevator, albeit small ones. I'm not even going to go into the events...but they have annual ones and monthly ones and special ones, there's parades, markets, yoga, etc, etc, etc. Ybor really is a great place. read more

For a Floridian, cigar smoker and someone intrigued by historical significance, Ybor City is a 5 star no-doubter. In the late 1800's, Tampa was well-established with a proper downtown, a newspaper, city hall, police and fire departments, a busy port, Henry Plant's railroad system and 30,000 people. Just to put that into perspective, there were only 2,500 people living in Miami at the time. Vicente Martinez Ybor was searching for a place to relocate his Key West cigar operations at this time, and a land mass outside of Houston, Texas was the front-runner. That is, until a buddy of his named Gavino Gutierrez wrote to him and said, "Hey bro, fuck Texas. Come check out this land I found while scouting for guava harvesting. It's swampy as hell, but we can just get some pumps going an fix that shit." That's how I envision the conversation going at least. Ybor set up shop, and soon other cigar manufacturers followed suit. Before anyone knew it, Tampa, FL had become an epicenter for Cubans, Spaniards, Italians, Germans and was producing more cigars than any other place in the world. After a few devastating fires, some hurricanes, the invention of machines that could roll cigars and the fading popularity of cigars in general, Ybor City took some serious right hooks to the chin over the last decade. But that wouldn't stop the neighborhood from flourishing. Interstate 4 would eventually be constructed in 1957, splitting Ybor City in half, with its southern section eventually becoming the "Historical Ybor City District." The northern section would fall into decay and become riddled with urban blight, which is sad because the area still retains some beautiful historic homes that are owned by folks whose resolve probably mirrors that of settlers out west during the gold rush of 1849. Mostly, Ybor City consists of restaurants, shops, bars and night clubs today. Cigar rolling still occurs, but on a miniature scale in comparison to the days of old. Still, it is nice to see people keeping the tradition alive. Tabanero is my personal favorite. The shop owner, Yanko is major cool. The district is where the Cuban sandwich was invented around the turn of the century. Sadly, the quality of the sandwich in Ybor and Tampa fell into disrepair along with the cigar industry. Sandwich shop owners began taking shortcuts to save money by using processed ingredients, and most people living here still haven't had an authentic version of the sandwich. Most people wanting a Cuban sandwich in Ybor City will land at either Gaspar's Grotto or Carmine's, both of which are pretty terrible by my standards. Stone Soup is the best option along 7th Avenue, by far. Just to the east of Ybor, Brocato's has a really good one too, though they're a little heavy on the meat for my liking. For authenticity, The Colombia has it on lock. The owner, Richard Gonzmart, spent thousands to get the restaurant's Cuban sandwich back on track during the early 2000s. Ybor City boasts a few hotels with more on the way, so it is an excellent place to party and lodge. I live in Hillsborough County, and I've still done "staycations" in Ybor. It's a good time, and even better knowing that a bed is waiting nearby. Restaurants abound! Aside from Cuban sandwiches, there is a lot of good food to be had here. One of the best Italian restaurants in the city is located here, Bernini, which is owned by Historical Hospitality. They also own Green Iguana, Carne and Tequilla's, but skip Tequilla's. The food and service there are terrible. Like Greek food? Acropolis is pretty solid, and usually a fun time around 8 PM on weekends with belly dancers, plates and napkins flying all over the place to the tune of some guy's accordion. If you want a truly unique dining experience though, head to Hamburger Mary's. It will not disappoint. How about Latin-American fare? El Puerto, hand's down. The Colombia opened in 1905 and is cool, so if you want to see some old school Florida gilded age type stuff, check that out. My personal favorite spot to eat, and drink is James Joyce on 8th. Hand's down, the best burger and bartenders in Tampa. Plus, the craft beer and whiskey selection is expansive. Ybor City is unique, rich in history and still very significant in 2015. When I have friends and family visiting, this is ALWAYS a place they're taken. My first time in the area was 1990 to listen to Techno at a club called Tracks. Then later on, it was House Music at the Jazz Cellar. Now I mainly go to eat and smoke cigars. I imagine I will continue going until I die. read more

A friend decided to take a chance and see Ybor City with me for his birthday. He was quietly shocked. Everyone was really nice at Ybor City. This area is turning into a restaurant, office, and art haven. The city has opened up the streets to traffic, and it has changed from a lil' Bourbon Street feel to more of an Austin 6th Street. At night, if you are not a young club goer, then stick between 17th St. and Republica de Cuba (one block on either side of Centro Ybor). You will find good cigar bars, great tourist bars like Coyote Ugly and Acropolis. Locals typically stick to Fuma Bella, New World Brewery, and Reservoir Bar. read more

We went to Columbia Ybor for my 69th birthday dinner. We watched the beautiful & talented dancers & singer. We ate the excellent Spanish food & drank the sangria. I being an old birthday brat had some flan too. The entire evening was a wonderful delight. We were also taken for a tour of the kitchen. Last place I had a tour of kitchen was Bern steak house. If you want to live anywhere near here...Be aware that the city lets Roosters run all over the area, waking you up in the morning. A friend of mine is a professional musician in this area and invited me down in August of 2015 when I got married. It reminds me of Halloween and Mardi Gras mixed with the Major League Street Whore Division series playoffs with shit loads more alcohol and a heavy sidecar of lady boys. How do I describe this A three ring circus if I didn't know better I would swear I was in the middle of Greenwich Village or another neighborhood in New York City this area is loaded with bars restaurants it's one of the oldest districts in Tampa it's not like West Hollywood or Wilton Manors in Fort Lauderdale but looking at the buildings and the architecture it really doesn't look like a typical Florida district, it does have character and there's some very interesting people walking the streets at night be prepared for people coming up to you asking for money asking for cigarettes it's all part of the local charm I would definitely go back here and be entertained again read more

Ybor in a sentence: If you don't know Ybor, then you don't know Tampa. Ybor in one word: Diverse. In this roughly 1 mile strip, most of which is on 7th Avenue, you will find loud, quiet, hispanic, black, asian, white, gay, straight, transgender, young, old, bright, dark, churches, dive bars, pubs, salsa, jazz, hip hop, techno, pizza, sushi, crepes, expensive, dirt cheap, cigars, hookah, cigars, tattoos, more cigars, and....well....just go and discover for yourself. All of these different types of genres mix here....and most of the time it works, for those coming with a very very open mind. It is somewhat of a microcosm of the diversity that is Tampa Bay, all in your face at one time. People can get uncomfortable here, especially those who believe that the area they live in (carrollwood, esst tampa, west tampa, Seminole heights etc.) is what Tampa IS. In reality my friends, these are all in themselves very very small pieces of this overall city. Parking on the street is usually fine unless there is some sort of event taking place or it is a Friday or Saturday night. On one of these nights, this place is very packed. In such case, follow signs for parking garages. They usually have space. I recommend seeing Ybor both in the nighttime and daytime as it is two very different places, both beautiful in their own regard. All in all, Ybor IS Tampa, Fl. If you live here, or are just visiting, I seriously advise you to visit this place if you want to be able to see all of Tampa at once. Just don't be quick to judge. A tale of two cities. During the day, Ybor is a city rich in history and fascinating stories of how Tampa came to be. Jose Marti park is Cuban owned land. Take a trip to Ybor, FL to visit Cuba! Saturday mornings, visit the Ybor market where small businesses come to sell there goodies and hand made treasures. You can also catch a trolley here. Trolley's run from here and through Channelside district where the cruise ships dock. At night, Ybor is transformed into an ultimate party town. It is often compared to New Orleans' Bourbon street. 7th and 8th Avenue are home to night clubs and bars and several drunk visitors. There is also a movie theater, a comedy club, neat craft beer stops and several restaurants. 7th avenue is also a well known parade route where the masses flock for beads and a glimpse of a Pirate or two. If you are brave enough or open minded enough, I also highly recommend the ghost tour. Some of the nations most haunted places are in these few city blocks and the tour is rich with history. Rarely do I visit a place that I dislike so much. I tried to like Ybor. Really, I did. I took a good look around, thinking, "there has to be more to it than this". Sadly, for me, there wasn't. So, what exactly is the appeal of Ybor? Well, if you're a "twenty something" who likes partying in dive bars with sticky floors, Ybor might be for you. You want a tattoo or piercing? Ok, try Ybor. Cigar afficionado? Certainly, come here! As far as the restaurants go, yes, there are several, and some probably very good. But to be quite honest, I was turned off by the dark, dingy, dirty feel of the whole place. We tried only one, and I could not get past the "icky" feel of it to be able to enjoy it. Went here in 2010 with my girls for one of my good friends birthdays and will NEVER return. So disappointed with Ybor and Tampa in general. Not sure if we were in the wrong parts or what not but on a Saturday night we went out to Ybor where it is rumored to be 'where it's at' as far as night life is concerned. Let me tell you, there was maybe one place which looked even remotely populated and it was a hip-hop club that wanted something like a 15-20 dollar cover charge (we were not minors either).
