We love DanceWorks! I can't say enough great things about Kathy and her team…read more When we moved to the area last year, I started looking online for places for my 5 year old to take ballet. There were a few places with great reviews but most of the moms that I knew sent their kids to DanceWorks for ballet / tap / etc. I was surprised by the lack of reviews but decided to try it out and WE LOVE IT! My daughter is always energized and happy leaving class and we are looking forward to their annual show in June where all classes get to showcase what they've learned. In addition, we just had my daughter's 6th birthday party here and I received multiple follow ups from parents telling me that their kids had so much fun at the dance party. I decided to add a review to help any parents out there who may not be aware of DanceWorks and may not hear about it through word of mouth. It's a wonderful place! Tip: Parking and the entrance is actually in the back.

Extremely Unprofessional and Accusatory Behavior by the Owner at Danceworks Studios in Montclair,…read moreNJ. I was invited as an actor by the director to shoot a film at Danceworks Studios. I had no prior relationship with the studio or its owner, Kathy. What should have been a straightforward professional experience turned into one of the most disrespectful and upsetting incidents I've encountered. During the shoot, I needed a phone charger. A crew member told me there was one behind the front desk, so I went to look. I checked the desk surface (which had a disorganized tangle of cords), opened the drawers when I didn't see anything, and eventually found a charger plugged in on the floor across from the desk. I took it and left. My face was fully visible the entire time, and I took nothing that wasn't offered. Kathy saw this on the security camera and immediately accused me of trying to rob the studio. She claimed my normal, stylish outfit looked "sketchy" and that my search for the charger appeared suspicious. She even referenced me walking in and out earlier, which happened because I have ADD and had briefly forgotten the car keys to her own sister-in-law's vehicle (the same car that had been left for me to use and was parked right outside). We had been filming openly in that lobby for hours prior, right in front of the cameras, alongside her sister-in-law and niece. There was zero context for any accusation. The situation was made worse by the irony: I was later told Kathy is "very OCD" and that's why she reacted so strongly to me opening the drawers. Yet other people on set were casually going through the same drawers for items like reading glasses with no issue, and the desk itself was one of the most disorganized messes I've seen. I was deeply offended by how I was spoken to and accused, especially as a guest invited to the space. Kathy had every opportunity to recognize me through family connections (I've appeared in years of photos with her niece on her sister-in-law's social media), yet she chose to treat me like a criminal instead. A few days later, I even called the studio, left my phone number, and asked if Kathy would offer an apology for the way I was treated. I received no response and no callback whatsoever. That complete lack of accountability speaks volumes. No one should have to deal with baseless accusations and rude treatment like this, particularly when they're there professionally and openly. I will not be returning to Danceworks Studios and strongly recommend others avoid it as well. One bad experience with the owner is more than enough.

Do NOT put your kids into this school…read more We know many parents who removed their daughters and sons from this school primarily because of their harsh words, and it's not just "discipline." They leave the students with low self-esteem, defeated, berated and depressed. This school completely destroyed my daughters love for ballet. For years, her "teacher" Ms. Alyssa constantly body-shamed her, starting at the young age of 10, yelling at a mere child constantly leaving her in tears. Instead of supporting her, she psychologically abused a young impressionable child. By her last year, she was being told to "get the f*** out" of the studio, that's how prefers to treat her students. This is not a "he said, she said" matter. This required parental intervention in which the whole class witnessed. Despite same, Ms. Alyssa and the co-owner of the studio published a false and misleading narrative of our daughter that is now the subject of a lawsuit for libel and defamation as it was all caught on video. After being confronted on several occasions and suggesting that our daughter acted improperly, their statements contradicted reality. They couldn't produce any evidence - not any one student sided with Ms. Alyssa - and despite having an "on-site" video surveillance could not produce any such evidence. However, to the contrary, several students recorded the behind the door episode on their cell phone. That should provide a good example of how they manage their studio. As it pertains to our daughter, they tried to paint a narrative that the final confrontation never occurred stating that it "never happened" despite the recorded evidence, eyewitnesses and statements of the other students. Adding to this remains that fact that our daughter had the lead role - one that she diligently worked towards for years. One she literally worked so hard for, and when the programs for the show were printed, her name wasn't even listed. When she calmly asked the director why her name wasn't listed, she thought it was appropriate to scream in my face at the top of her lungs. For what its worth, our daughter is one of only a select group that had made it to the world renowned Master Ballet in Phoenix - however that too upset Ms. Alyssa. The director also refused to pay her for the hours she worked as a dance instructor (which is wage theft and a claim has been filed with the vicinage in Verona). When I (her father) inquired about the wages, Ms. Alyssa said in no uncertain terms to: "Sue me" and refused to pay the wages to our daughter. So hence, the complaint was filed. Unfortunately, the environment is extremely toxic, cruel, and beyond unprofessional. No child deserves to be humiliated like that. If you care about your kid's mental health and self-esteem, do not send them there.

Absolutely the worst school possible. I wouldn't even give them a star but the system requires at…read moreleast 1. The owners are liars. Ms. Alyssa, the school's owner and choreographer is dishonest, hosts "favorites" and focuses upon billing in exchange for parts and attention. Ms. Alyssa and her assistance Olga regularly body shamed our daughter and berated her in front of her other classmates. Ms. Alyssa regularly and intentionally lied about certain parts and was devious to the point of lying to our daughter's face and further did not include her in the program the day of print - but she still expected full payment regardless for the classes and costumes. Ms. Alyssa also with-held all of the money she owed to our daughter for teaching. Despite this, our daughter was admitted to one of the top dance academies despite VBS. NOTE: VBS's reputation is literally the worst in the state of NJ and throughout the country. If you are going to invest into your child, bring them to a better school. PS - the school has also been sued by the parents of a former student for psychological abuse.

She's been dancing well over 20 years so she knows what she's doing and how to run a class. She is very passionate about what she does and it shows on the dance floor. She is very flexible, easy going, accommodating and sensitive to the needs of all her students and just wants and brings out the best in them so that they can live a healthier life style and and feel great about themselves both inside and out (which they do). She doesn't pressure people to do more or go at her own pace either, just give her your best! Doesn't matter if you're a beginner, intermediate or expert dancer, she organizes her classes so that all levels of dancers feel comfortable with her routine. Her music selection is excellent too. Anyone who wants to work up a serious sweat while having fun doing it needs to take this class! Shes in the process of introducing MANY new and exciting features to her studio as well!
