I was very favorably impressed with Mike Hitchingham. For starters, he actually responded to my "request a quote" inquiry on Yelp within a day! I responded to his message by calling him, and described the problem over the phone. He asked some clarifying questions, and agreed that I was probably right (I suspected a 110V outlet was receiving 220V power). There were only 6 YELP reviews and I generally like to see more reviews before selecting a vendor, but his courteous, open manner and willingness to take a little time on the phone convinced me that he was the right guy to look at this. He stopped by within a day or two when he was on the UWS to check it out. He confirmed the problem in a brief visit, and said he'd return on Sunday to fix the problem. Then he actually returned on Sunday, and fixed the problem! His price was fair, and I was happy to pay his invoice. I've given his name and number to the guy across the hall, and to a friend who lives 6 blocks away. I found him to be straightforward, direct, honest, and willing to answer questions and educate me. Patience is a virtue! I had an electrical problem at my apartment. After calling a number of electricians, who started their response by quoting me $150-$180/hour without more patience to understand what needs to be fixed, I decided to give it one last shot. Mike picked up the phone and, with the utmost patience, insisted on learning about the problem I was facing, suggested alternative solutions and offered more time on the phone after those methods have been tested. The idea was to not charge me unless there was an absolute need for it. At the end, the problem was solved by hopping on the phone twice for more than 30 minutes. In New York, where time is money and nice/kind/empathetic people are a rarity, someone like Mike is truly to be valued and applauded. I wished I could've given you business. I used Hitchingham to repair a very expensive lighting system installed in my apartment as part of a gut renovation 18 years ago. The system is from an Italian manufacturer who was difficult to,locate for parts. Mike Hitchingham found the manufacturer, repaired the system and did the work in a caring, sensitive manner. His charges were extremely reasonable. He showed up when he said he would, never missing an appointment. A job that was complicated was efficiently completed. I began managing an office about a year ago and wanted to improve the lighting in the open office space. I checked out the fixtures and all of them had burnt wiring or dead ballasts. I called when my pitch light switch broke and no light! We tried to replace but new ones are different so we blew a new switch! Called on Sunday and got a call Monday and appt for that day. Hitch did knowledgable, careful work. Was clear and concise and was done with that and another i decided we had better have done quickly. Mike was really friendly, very helpful, and fast. He replaced the "ballasts" on a few of my business's fluorescent light fixtures. He even offered the diagnostic for free because he wanted to try out a new piece of equipment. I don't know if he normally does free diagnostic visits, and I wouldn't expect it, but I think it shows that he's a businessman that cares about making the customer happy. read more
