It was a bit pricey overall, however the service was amazing but would have appreciated learning a bit more about the wines that we were trying. The property is beautiful and such a peaceful vibe. Google has this winery listed as allowing walk ins. Made the horrible mistake of arriving at this winery, only to be accosted by the owner. We had mentioned reading about walk in availability online and that there is no phone number to call to confirm. We would have been just fine with a simple explanation or polite interaction yet we were met with very unfriendly, and disrespectful behavior. Would recommend visiting a winery and supporting local businesses who are respective and courteous to their community. Luckily in Oregon we have many to choose from. Highly disappointing. read more

I came here a couple months ago with some friends for lunch and had a great time. Driving out to the farm and to the restaurant, the road can get a bit rough but if you keep heading straight you'll end up at the right place! There is a wide staircase outside and you'll be greeted by a black building with large windows (there's also a lot of cute pigs nearby!). The inside of the restaurant has plenty of seating and is very spacious, but there's also outdoor seating in the back as well. There were so many dishes throughout the meal, and everything is done family-style. Every dish I tried was so unique and the blend of flavors, spices, and fresh ingredients was novel and innovative. I don't think I could choose a favorite dish. And, the wine was of course amazing. The wine pours were generous and I was able to try an orange wine for the first time. This place kinda feels like you're gonna be an ingredient on The Menu but that just added to the excitement of this place. Honestly if I died after this meal I wouldn't be mad. I've never been to a farm-to-table restaurant where you can see all the animals and vegetables that'll be served to you. Very unique and circular experience. My group did the farmer's lunch which included family style dining and 6 wine pours. The first two courses started off strong with beets and radish salad paired with a rose wine. To be honest I am a wine beginner and never order it at restaurants but I understand it now. Their wine glasses were huge but thin and I felt so sophisticated sipping on it between bites. The other standout dish was the dessert which was pavlova & Meyer lemon. The airy and crunchy texture was so fun to eat and the flavors were a refreshing finish to the meal. My wife and I had a delightful five course lunch at the Hiyu Wine Farm recently. (Reservations are required). The resturaunt is located well off the beaten path in a building that combines the elements of a modern open kitchen with that of a classic rustic farm. The food and wine were perfectly paired. The wines came from the all over the Columbia River Gorge. Much of the food was sourced there on the farm itself. The staff were very knowledgeable of each dish and happy to answer our questions. Even though tasting menu dishes tend to be on the smaller size, the fourth dish we were served was a very generous portion of deliciously prepared pork loin that was large enough to be its own entree. Overall, the entire experience was quite memorable and we will certainly come back if we pass this way again. read more

I've been going to Hiyu since 2020; I love the restaurant, the food, and the people (and animals) that work there. I've been more than 10 times and pick up wine from them multiple times a year. Some thoughts: -This is a place to go to learn about making natural wine. The setting is awesome and I highly recommend going on one of their tours. -The pour size is plenty (I usually can't have all of what's put in front of me) and you will get to try multiple bottles (everything they pour you can buy). -This has a high end restaurant. The ingredients, wine, team, and setting all have costs. You can reduce the amount you pay by getting a membership; such provides a subscription to bottles of their wine, lets you go in for monthly included tastings. and cuts the price of experiences, meals, and wine by a flat percentage. So we did the wine tasting with the kind of amuse bouche/tasting menu with it. We arrived in the afternoon and were greeted in the driveway by the owners' dog Chef who is just a sweetheart! We were seated and each wine selection was paired wonderfully with a small bite that was shared between two people per plate. They do accomodate if you have dietary restrictions and if there are people in the party who don't partake in alcohol (I think they just get water though, but it is cheaper). All in all, a lovely afternoon just about an hour drive from Portland. Would recommend this as a leisurely afternoon activity with friends and good drinks. read more

Our group of 5 friends was finally able to make it out to Hiyu a few weeks ago for a lunch tasting after it being on the list for quite some time, and dealing with COVID restraints. The food was exquisite!! I was hesitant going into it with everything being listed as small bites, but there was plenty to go around for the group of us. Their menu changes frequently I believe, but you could really tell the "farm-to-table" in the Hiyu beef meatballs. Also, the ice cream with sour cherry granita and granola (and crumbled macaron on top to offset the sour)?? 5 stars on the food. So tempted to go back for dinner. The wine was also delicious and I loved the mineral qualities that came through in everything that was poured, even if it was light. I'd have to say my favorite was the Oisin and we ended up with a bottle of that and the Floreal Cider to-go. The only reason I deducted a star (probably would have been half, but unfortunately don't have that option), is that our waiter didn't really walk us through the wines as he was pouring them, and we repeatedly had to ask which wine we were on and get more information about them so we knew what we liked and didn't, and ultimately what we wanted to take home. Overall, highly recommend both the wine and the food, and can't beat the views of Hood River along the way! read more

We had a wonderful dinner at Hiyu last night. We loved the rustic farm to table food and the wines are so interesting. We had two dishes that were particularly memorable. The first was a lightly pickled and sautéed chanterelle with sheeps milk gnocchi. The second was a roasted delicata squash with chard and maitake mushrooms. The wine pours are generous and the space is really nice. The whole thing has a very intimate feel. The kitchen has just a few people and the dining room is sparse. If I have a complaint it's the chairs. The dinner lasts 2 1/2 hours and the chairs are not comfortable. Overall the whole experience is a bargain in my opinion. The food isn't overdone, the portions are generous as are the wine pours. We plan to come back next summer. read more

Unpretentious. Quality wine. Great food and the chef went over his recipe and method when we really enjoyed a dish. Columbia Valley, Oregon, and Washington wine is pricy - taxes, taxes, taxes are to blame, but these folks do the little things that soften the blow and add to the experience: their labels are beautiful watercolors, each bottle is wax sealed, not foil, and they seem to really care about their product and your experience with it. The building were the tastings are held is modern and classic at the same time. Full of light. DO NOT GO HERE!!! Save your money for the other wonderful people and vineyards in this area. We were treated horrible and like we were a complete nuisance. The whole purpose of this experience is the EXPERIENCE. Which was AWFUL. I can't say it enough. DO NOT GO HERE. The food was dropped off with our very small wine pours. We were told the name of the dish and the name of the wine and grapes which comprised the wine but were not explained about the wine or the dish or why they chose these two to go together. The employees could not get away from us quick enough. We wanted to buy additional wine pours at the end of the service while we waited for our taxi but we were denied stating they had a private party coming in after us and they couldn't have us impacting the experience of that party. Meanwhile, two other groups were still in the process of their tasting and pairing experience. We offered to drink the wine outside (mind you it was very cold and pouring rain) and we were still denied. We were told we could have water. We were three women, in our upper 30s, that were so excited to go have this wonderful wine pairing experience. I bring this up because I have read similar reviews as it relates to women and their treatment at Hiyu. We had money to spend and would have gladly spent it. We tried not to let it ruin our evening but hard not to when the experience cost $280 and was awful. read more

Waste of money! We had the tavern experience which is $150 per person plus a 20% gratuity. When you book this online you must select gratuity before you can even purchase the tasting, which I found really weird. We had to ask to have each wine explained to us. The servers talked so softly we couldn't hear them. The male server who first helped us continuously looked at my chest. Very awkward. This was basically one glass of wine and five very small bites, like one shishito pepper per person. At the end of the meal no one said goodbye or thank you for coming in, we just walked out. Overall so incredibly disappointing for the price. If this had been $50 that would have been too much. Won't be back and recommend you do not book here. I was expecting so much more. read more

Hiyu is such a uniquely Oregon wine tasting experience: a fully operating winery/farm with a farm-to-table tasting and food pairing. Our small group really enjoyed our trip to Hiyu recently for a tasting paired with snacks. The tasting room has a gorgeous rustic industrial aesthetic, which creates a really warm vibe for the tasting. Our host, Molly, was very friendly and engaging during our tasting. We picked her brain and talked shop about wine. Personally, I really liked the wine. I'll echo what others have noted about the limitations on tasting off the flight. I would like to see Hiyu offer some off-flight tasting options in the future. "Taste before you buy" is really the only way to have faith in your bottle purchase. Hiyu's farm is a smaller shop and production, so it makes sense to me why they can't pop open bottles here or there for everyone to taste. We did leave with 2 bottles of an off-flight wine that came at the recommendation of the host's recommendation. So we didn't leave empty-handed! Will be revisiting for the meal and dinner pairings! read more

Our sommelier at Beast (Michael) directed us to Hiyu winery "near Hood River", he explained. Now, I consider myself A) a pretty big Hood River fan and B) a pretty big wine fan - the fact that I'd never heard of this winery in my FAVORITE TOWN was a bit upsetting but also offered the adventure of trying something new. The very next day, we were off in search of Hiyu. We had tried the 2014 Pinot, which was paired with one of our courses at Beast, and we all loved. We drove into the (poorly signed) winery and I was immediately fully of joy to see a fenced area roaming with dogs and goats. This was going to be my kind of place. We were informed of the wine pairing options and selected the most introductory tasting. For $25, we tasted 6 wines all paired with a small bite of food. Once again - yes, this was my kind of place (food + wine + farm + dogs and goats?! What else does a girl need?!) The bites ranged from a fresh oyster to salmon rillette to a delicious goat's cheese - each was delicious with the wines and the service was excellent and friendly. Each wine she described the process (how long was it aged,etc.) - I would have loved to hear more about the flavor profile of the wines and how it interacted with the food, but I may have been spoiled coming from Beast the night before! The next option would be to taste 6 wines with bites for $65...and then a full fledged dinner by reservation only. I could definitely see us coming back on a special occasion type event. I particularly loved the unique pear wine, and had to practice self control to not bring home several bottles. Overall this space is open, bright (I couldn't tell if there was a really clean window to my right of it it was just open space - it was, in fact, a really clean window), and warm/welcoming. Many of the bites were harvested right there on the farm. If you're in Hood River (near Tucker Park and other wineries such as Phelps Creek) - I would definitely make a stop at Hiyu! read more

Tasting lunch had terrific wines, however,I found it hard to differentiate as it seemed to be poured without a clear schedule and relationship with the family served staggered meal... The food was lovingly prepared, quite good but also much more modest in indulgent ingredients. Mainish course was a pot pie - great crust and flavor. Nonetheless, I had expected more but maybe at $120. Maybe for lunch and flights I need to recalibrate. The wine is amazing, their winemaking process is so interesting, and the food is phenomenal. The deduction of stars is due to a lack of hospitality. The pourer absolutely ruined the experience for my friends and I by giving 3 word descriptions of the wine and not answering any of our questions. I literally saw him roll his eyes as he walked away from our seating once. I was not impressed by his rude attitude and don't know that I'll be coming back if I'll be treated like that. Meanwhile, he was absolutely so friendly to the couple seated across the table from us who were from Australia if I heard correctly. We had driven an hour and a half to learn more about this biodynamic winery that was using techniques that are seldom heard of and done in the winemaking industry and were SEVERELY disappointed. read more
