I have never been here before, but was craving Vietnamese food last night after OTF, so thought I would stop in. I was blown away by how modern everything is! This is not your typical Vietnamese place. The decor was so fabulous that I took a bunch of pictures! I loved the beautiful painting of the Vietnamese woman that hung high on the wall. What a gorgeously decorated space. I had the tofu Vietnamese sub. I haven't had a sub since my meat eating days because I never really saw a vegetarian option before. It was damn good. My partner had beef and said his was amazing. We also got some green onion cakes which were delicious. It was quiet, so we didn't need to wait too long for our food. Our server was friendly and told me to have a great night! I was like "aww thanks". I appreciate a nice sentiment and smile! It's crazy that I've never tried this place before, but I'm glad I did! It was fun and I definitely enjoyed the food, service and art. read more

Based on their ramen alone, I would have to give this place two stars and that's mostly based on presentation. It didn't even taste like ramen. It was more like a bowl of pho with different ingredients. Whole baby corn with regular corn? The noodles tasted like regular vermicelli. I was happy to have a warm bowl of soup on a cold day, however, I was hoping to have a bowl of ramen. This is not that. I realize this is a Vietnamese restaurant simply hoping on the ramen bandwagon but I think it would be best they get off at the next stop. Having been here before for their pho and colour bowls, I know they have good food at downtown prices. Beautiful atmosphere with a real buzz during the lunch hour. 3 to 3.5 based on their Vietnamese offerings. Just avoid the ramen. read more

Yes! The Pho is gluten free! Decor is clean, modern and bright. Parking - there isn't. Meters out front tend to be full all the time. Around back there is a pay parkade, not sure how much daytime parking there will be, the Save-On lot will tow you if they see you park and leave the mall. Stepping in the door, you are greeted by the menu hanging in a long row from the ceiling, the Beer & wine cooler, and a dessert cooler filled with the cutest pastries. Depending on the day, it can get busy here at lunchtime, so it can be good to come early or late to avoid the rush. It's set up for a busy lunch takeout on the right, but it doesn't seem to have taken off. Proceed to the counter to your left when you enter to place your order. You order at the counter, and they give you a buzzer like you'd get at a restaurant waiting for a table. It goes off when your order is ready. Grab your cutlery and napkins after you order on your way to your table, or when you come back to the counter to pick up your lunch. You may want to dress your dish at the condiment counter too. Water is available from a jug at the cutlery station, or you can purchase bottled water. Plenty of soup and rice/noodle bowls to choose from. I've tried both the Pho and Bun vermicelli. While the noodle bowl was straightforward, I was hoping for more variety of veggies with vietnamese mint/basil, cucumber etc. Pho is tasty, and large. I usually have to get a to-go container for the leftovers. I should just learn to bring my own container. Next time! I was hoping to try the rotisserie chicken, but the last 3 times I've visited, there hasn't been fresh ready. read more

Went here for dinner with a friend. We warmers walking to another place but it started to rain heavily and ended up here. It is has nice decor. We were there for hours and the place was just about empty the whole time. My food was good, not really outstanding but not bad. Their was a bit of a communication problem regarding my friends gluten free food requirements but it worked out in the end. My friend really enjoyed her soup and I thin I would get soup if I returned here. Our evening was very pleasant and I had no complaints. read more

This is a favourite place of my co-workers. At least 7 out of 10 times we opt to come here as a group for lunch to order takeout when we want food other than cafeteria food...it's usually very crowded for seating in the lunch hour at this restaurant. They used to have really long lines, but it seems to have lessened a lot now that other small fast food spots have popped up in the same block. That being said, I find parts of their menu have been evolving...they no longer carry desserts & macarons in their display case, but they do offer ramen now & Vietnamese sub sandwiches. I also like their ready made fresh to go papaya salad & rice rolls that they have to buy on the side display. Sometimes I buy it to bring home as a quick win for supper. When you order, you are given a vibrating pager which keeps the line efficient. I have only dined in once, but when you're pressed for time, it really cuts close in the lunch hour. It's bright, tidy & fairly noisy while dining in. Menu wise, I like the pho, but it's quite a production to put together when its takeout. I've been leaning towards their combos and I used to order rice as the starch in my combo, but it always takes so long; so now I go for the vermicelli which has been a win every time: takes 5 min or less & my pager gets lit! Service is super fast, very friendly & efficient. I also appreciate their add-on table, so you can squirt some chilli, soy, or hoisin sauces or add bean sprouts, mint sprigs, or lemons to your takeout dish plus pick your own disposable utensils or chopsticks & napkins before you head out the door. Well I've got to give this place credit, they definitely are stylish! With giant installation light forms that you can see from all up and down on 109th St while you're approaching Jasper Ave. The seating is also very futuristic chic. This quick and easy Vietnamese place sure has flair! Parking, now that's another story... The best I can suggest is in the Impark across the street, or maybe way over in the Save-On lot; not the most ideal for take-out. I had the coconut soup with broccoli and an order of onion cakes. Both were fantastic! I love that the onion cakes are the big doughnut shaped ones. I'm not sure how busy this place gets, The floor to ceiling windows usually reveal an empty restaurant. When I stopped in there was one other person and they were taking their meal to-go. With such a large space in pretty pricy realestate I hope they survive the long winter! read more

Coming into this place, I love the ambiance and trendy décor. It's very clean and seating comfortable. The menu can be difficult to see it all when you are near the front door lining up. It was just before 12 on a Friday and there wasn't much of a line up yet. I ordered the chicken and spring roll vermicelli bowl for $11. They give you a buzzer so you know when your food is ready. It's a good thing we came before noon as we had our choice of seating but it started to get full within a few minutes. The food didn't take long and I went up to get my bowl. They have an area where you can help yourself to cutlery, water, and I believe bean sprouts too. The chicken was good but the spring rolls were overcooked and somewhat hard. The noodles had a few clumps in it too but there was enough fish sauce to give it a good taste. Great location and within walking distance from work. It's nice to see another Vietnamese restaurant in the area for lunch option. read more

I had an interesting experience today when I visited Hoang Long. I have been here before - a few years ago when I was working in an office building nearby, and I've had pleasant visits. Today was my first time back in years and I was craving a bowl of pho. I get pho almost weekly, I really enjoy it and I've eaten it at many restaurants around the city, and even had it home made by Vietnamese friends. It's one of my favorite foods. I think the average price for a bowl of pho is around 11 or 12 dollars in our city. However, I paid $16.17 in total at Hoang Long, which I felt a bit bad about. (There's a $3.00 charge for meat and also an auto-gratuity option on the debit machine that solicits for tips.) I paid it and went to wait. When I received the bowl I noticed almost immediately the oil content in the broth. It was very bubbly and oily, and when I put my spoon in the oil just got worse, it looked really really unpleasant. I decided to taste it and it was an overwhelming taste of oil. This, plus the price I paid, made me want to ask them to return it. I called over the waitress and she was immediately disagreeing with me. I said, "It's really oily, I'm sorry. I don't think I want to eat it." and she told me, "No, that's how it's made." And I said no, there's too much oil. I'd please like to return it, because I paid 16 dollars for a small bowl of oily soup broth. She told me, smugly, "That's a huge bowl actually." That irked me, I said "No I'd like to get a refund please." And she left to get her manager. Now, this is when it gets good. The manager comes out, she's a smaller woman with a nice smile. She must've been the owner or head manager. She came over and I showed her the soup, she immediately said "Yes you're right, that's too much oil. I can remake it for you if you'd like, I can do it better." And I was already angered by the waitress and the price that I just wanted to leave. So I said no thank you, I'd like my money back. She didn't argue or seem upset, she was very apologetic and immediately and easily said "Okay I'll give you your money back, I'm sorry." She didn't question me or anything. She gave me back cash for every penny I spent, and then took it a step further and gave me three free spring rolls and told me, "Here, this is for you. I don't want you to leave hungry. I think you'll like my spring rolls, and hopefully you'll give me another chance to make you soup." It was a really nice gesture, and I could feel how genuine she was. So I left happy after feeling really annoyed - I told her I'll definitely come back and give her another chance. And I will. Customer service: you're doing it right Hoang Long. read more

I've been wanting to try this location ever since I found out they sell the grilled quails that they have at Taste of Edmonton that I just adore. Of course this time I was with co-workers so I was a bit embarrassed to gnaw on the quails (can't let anything go to waste!), so I'll have to come back another time for them... I will get to try you one day, quails! Although the line was a bit long (right to the door) around 12:15pm, it moved pretty quickly. There are macarons by the cash and a few grab and go items in a cooler right by the door, though it's unclear if you still have to wait in the line where everyone else is ordering if you want to pay for those. The menu is splashed across several screens spanning the back wall and it's a bit difficult to read one end if you are standing at the opposite end of the line. I ended up ordering the bun bo hue as I was craving some noodle soup. (Other menu options include a variety of salads, curries, build-your-own pho which is genius, and a build-your-own-bowl option.) I love that you get a little token that buzzes when your order is ready, so in the meantime we went to grab a seat and I checked out the beautiful modern decor. The high ceilings and ceiling-to-floor windows means lots of daylight, and there is just the coolest light fixtures. When my token buzzed, I excitedly ran over to grab my soup. There wasn't a lot of spicy oil floating on the top - fortunately the lady behind the counter scooped me out a bit more when I asked nicely (I think it was actually a shrimp paste chili sauce? In any case, delicious.). A bonus of this meant I also got a 'regular' Chinese-style soup spoon - so much easier to eat noodle soup out of. The noodles already had shredded cabbage on it but I went over to the self-serve station to add on some fresh bean sprouts and Thai basil (amidst other goodies hanging out there). I was pleasantly surprised by the bun bo hue. Piping hot, flavourful with the lemongrass scent, a decent ratio of noodles to tender beef shank chunks (some with fat, not just the perfect fat-less slices of beef catered to North American taste..) and Vietnamese cold cuts. It was a pretty decent-sized bowl too, comparable to a large bowl of pho at dedicated pho joints (or is it XL? I never understood why the small bowl was 'M' and the next size up a 'XL'..). I am docking a star because it is on the pricey side. I guess that's the cost of doing business downtown. However I'll probably likely come back again to try out other items. This afternoon while walking along jasper, my companion and I decided we wanted Vietnamese and checked this place out. We were dressed in sports gear and thought it would be a great casual place for a bite! There's vegan options (although you have to be aggressive in asking about ingredients. Mainly because two people barely spoke English and I had to ask for a gentleman to come from the back and speak to me to translate. Update: the steamed buns (bao) with tofu have lard in the buns. Their spring rolls have egg wash. Not vegan!). Anyways I loved the make your own bowl concept, you pick your own sauces and I tried their peanut and chill sauces! I got both vermicelli and brown rice. So good. We also got salad rolls with tofu and my companion got a make your own bowl with chicken and beef. I'd love to try their mango salad and coconut soup if they can veganize it next time. It's cool how they have alcohol there if you drink, and tons of take out and fresh desserts there! I personally like Thai food a lot better (and like their peanut sauce more than Vietnamese peanut sauce too) but honestly this Vietnamese can compete with more familiar Vietnamese around the city! This place just opened up it's really huge and looks very clean. They do a bit of bakery stuff like macaroons and Asian food by weight. They seem to be setup for big crowds but it was pretty empty when I cam in at 1245pm. I tried the pho, and it was pretty good. Above average and a large bowl for $12.50. I think once this place gets know it will get pretty busy. read more

At lunch they have quick meal service with cold and hot options and easy ordering. Depending on how busy they are, it may take a while to receive your food, but it is generally delicious and exactly what you've ordered. They even heed my 'no cilantro' request very well on their Vietnamese sandwiches. I usually order a vermicelli bowl with one or two toppings. Apparently they also offer more of a traditional sit down environment for supper. This is a nice combination for the area. read more

Hoang Long has been a staple in my lunchtime dining for over 9 years (since before it moved from the West end). I've come to know it's meals, flavour and service quite well. Previously, I have rated this restaurant quite high... I'm sorry to say... my experience today was well under expectations. I don't know what's changed lately but service has been getting more poor each and every time I've come in. Today's wait for a lunchtime take out meal (ordered before 11:30; and the lunch rush) was almost 12 minutes of waiting. There were 7 customers behind me who ordered and were served before I got my meal! In addition to that the Lemongrass Beef on Rice was not up to par. I KNOW the taste of that dish and today the sauce tasted like spicy ketchup! The meat was so-so and the rice was stuck together in balls. Like I said, I've come to know this restaurant quite well through the years but today was disappointing. Not so sure I'll rush to go to Hoang Long anytime soon again. read more

The positives: This is a nice quiet spot for a late lunch if you come after the busy lunch rush. My friend and I came here around 2 pm during the weekday with our newborns in tow. Because the place was virtually empty, save for a couple of people on hr back corner tables, we were able to enjoy our meals leisurely, breastfeeding as needed, and not have to worry too much if our babies put up a fuss. They have a condiment station where you can load up on bean sprouts, Thai basil, lemon wedges and sauces for your meal. The negatives: I ordered a bowl of wonton soup for $12 or $13. It advertised that along with the wontons, it came with veggies, chicken and shrimp. Well I got wontons, a few pieces of veggies, a few pieces of chicken and one shrimp. For the price point I would expect much better. Also, the place was a serious hot box from the moment we entered until we left. It felt like they had the heat blasting (although I hope they didn't) to the point where it was uncomfortable. So overall my experience was just meh... If I'm craving a wonton soup my preference would be to go a few blocks over on 106 St. to the Back Street Bistro as they have excellent soup bowls but they have limited lunch hours. read more

(unless you buy a whole order maybe?) I only had purchased a side order on my vermicelli bowl. Still customer service sucked and today it was super super slow. I am sure I even asked the owner!!! I went here for lunch to check it out as they had a Downtown Dining Week special. I ordered spring rolls and ramen. I have to say I thought the spring rolls were absolutely fantastic! The ramen was pretty good, too. I didn't love the ramen but it's the first time I have ever had true ramen (not the square plastic-wrapped kind from the grocery store) so I am no ramen expert. I love how spacious their restaurant is and it is designed in a cool, modern and relaxing way. They also have free wi-fi, which I am all about because I am a slave to my laptop and working. Anyway, I will be back for sure! I am glad I checked it out and I look forward to exploring more of their menu. Hoang Long is in a great location with great decor & seemingly pretty darn good food. That being said... the service was brutal. Afterwards? Wait for it. I went in and we ordered our lunch. The young lady behind the counter spoke so softly I couldn't hear a word she said, not that she said many words. She got the order wrong after I clearly and fairly loudly repeated what we wanted at least three times. Maybe... turn the music down? Not sure but what I am sure of is how frustrating it was to get the wrong drink and have them forget the soup. No really. Finally when we went to leave, a large portion of the pretty good sized portions was left and so I went to ask for a "to-go" container. You'd have thought I was asking for a free meal... it was a struggle and the final clincher was when I made the mistake of asking for a little tiny container (of which they have several hundred sitting right beside the checkout. "We don't have any..." Wha?? The food itself was very tasty. Unfortunately for me it also made me not feel very good. I am not sure I'll go back to Hoang Long. read more

I was working for a couple weeks in the neighbourhood. First time I was rushed and got the shrimp salad rolls. They were okay. Barely any veggies or herbs in them. The sauce was good. I came in on a Saturday for lunch. Just me and one woman in there. I ordered a ramen and waited half an hour for take-out. Then after one employee made three sandwiches for the other patron, she finally got to my ramen. And then I heard chef mike. She microwaved my meat and veggies. I actually stood by the cash register and watched her do this. Then she threw in some noodles and broth and bam, my order was done in three minutes. Waited half hour for garbage microwaved ramen. Should have gotten a pack of instant noodles, which probably would have been better than the rubber meat I got. It was disgusting. Wish I never tipped in the end, but I had prepaid. Oh well! There are much better places to eat Vietnamese in the city. read more

This is one of my favourite lunch spot downtown when I'm craving Vietnamese. They have a variety of viet rice/vermicelli bowls, salads, subs, soups and even ramen. My go to is their vermicelli bowls because I believe they serve one of the best lunch time grilled meat option downtown and they do not skimp out on the meat. I also always add spring rolls as an extra topping because they are quite delicious and not the frozen skinny ones that a lot of Vietnamese restaurants now serve. For those cold wintery days, they also have an assortment of soup noodles (pho, bun bo hue, etc). The only thing that I wouldn't recommend is the subs not because of the taste (the filling is actually quite good) but I find the ciabatta bun that they use is too doughy for the delicate meat that they serve with it and you end up just eating a lot of bread. I would definitely give the subs another shot if they ever switched out the bread they used. Environment - they have tons of seatings so this is a great place if you are looking for a good sit down lunch with your coworkers. They are also a great take out option for sitting at the legislature on a nice summer day. read more

I usually go to Hoang Long in WEM so I thought I'd give this one a shot-- and I am so glad I did, the menu is quite different and the variety offers a great selection. I went here for lunch today and got the beef skewer and an order of kimchi (things not offered at their other location) and really loved it! They don't have servers here so you just order your food and get it when you're ready, so don't expect too much service! They were quite polite when taking the order and everything and everyone working had smiles on. I took my girlfriend here last night for dinner. We went in the evening and the place was empty; probably because it was a holiday. She ordered the bahn mi and I had the veg curry bowl. My curry bowl was one of the worst things I have ever eaten. The tofu was so over done and the curry was basically a paste with an awful taste. The bahn mi was slightly better only because my gf rescued it with some hot sauce. We wanted to get some bubble tea so we got a strawberry and mango only because those were the only two left. I couldn't even finish it because it was way below expectations. The worst part was that I paid close to $40 for two meals and two drinks. I wish it was possible to pay based on the quality of food. This place has gone seriously down hill. Ordered Chicken Pad Thai it was swimming in grease. So much so that I had to literally pour some out by holding the top of the container over the dish.
