Unethical billing practices! I received treatment in February and insurance coverage was all satisfied and my out of pocket was paid and good to go. They called 6 months later stating there was an issue with the coverage and now I owe an additional 500$ out of pocket and it will shortly go to collections due to the timeframe. $2,000 Unexpected Bills and Lack of Transparency Avoid this clinic. There are numerous reports of patients facing unexpected bills, even after the office made it seem that everything was resolved with insurance and payment. In April, I had my teeth extracted by Dr. Isabelle DeMatteis. This clinic was everything I did not expect as a patient. As a patient, you trust that the office will care for you, and this includes making sure you can afford the treatment. I read the reviews and felt hesitant, but I decided to trust the clinic because many times I asked about my treatment, and they made me believe it could not cost more than the amount indicated, as they were handling the insurance. Now, I completely regret not listening to other patients. From what I see in reviews, the clinic has a pattern of sending unexpected bills after treatment has already been completed, which leads me to believe that the office has little interest in giving patients information on how to get an accurate quote from insurance regarding the cost of treatment. I only confirmed my appointment after receiving the treatment plan, trusting that the office had checked with my insurance as I was told. At no point--neither in person nor via message--was I informed that the final cost could be so drastically different, or that I might need another prior authorization. At no time was I advised to check with my insurance or request a prior authorization myself. I ended up being charged over $2,000 for two wisdom tooth extractions. I had this treatment because of pain, and I feel shocked and misled--I believed I was being properly cared for, and now I feel deceived. Where are Dr. Paul Calat and Dr. Michele? It seems that the dentists at this clinic are not at all concerned with the many negative reviews from patients who felt misled by the office. Clear communication and guidance regarding insurance and costs would go a long way toward preventing unnecessary stress. I am taking steps to understand my rights as a patient. I had an excellent experience going to Hoboken Oral surgeons for an urgent wisdom tooth extraction. I was treated by Dr Wang and Ebony. Given precautions related to covid 19, I was able to complete my consult and all administrative documentation by phone and online. When I got to the office, they picked me up from the lobby and took my temperature. Then got straight to work. I went through two different types of x-rays and was advised on all possibly options and scenarios before I decided to move forward with the procedure. The procedure itself was apparently difficult but went without any issues. I was appropriately sedated the entire time. Ebony then made sure I got home safely with my boyfriend and followed up the next day to advise on my medication and recovery. I wish I had read the reviews before getting my wisdom tooth removal here. I was told by their office that insurance would cover the majority of the cost of the removal and I would only have to pay $400 out of pocket, which I did that day. After the surgery was completed 6 months later, I get a bill stating I owe them over $1400 because insurance denied their claim. Now their office is telling me if I don't pay in 30 days, it will go to collections. This isn't fair, and I feel misled and lied to. How can they tell you it will be covered and then pull the rug from underneath you, where now you're forced to pay whatever they want? The billing is very sketchy and worst experience ever. They contacted the insurance company and ensured me that I got out of network benefit. They told me I would only pay 200 and I paid. Then 2 months later they asked me to pay another 240 because the insurance underpaid. Before the surgery, I showed a lot of concern about the money and I already told them that I don't get the money. I had a horrible experience having two wisdom teeth removed. This was a year ago and I'm just now getting to writing it because I didn't want it to be based on emotion. The Doctor Who performed my extraction was a female and I cannot remember her name. She Didn't have a good bedside manner. I was in so much pain and I felt it like she was just pushing against my face and I was crying the entire time and all she kept saying is there's no way you can feel it. Even after having me cry they didn't stop or check on me she just kept going and she was singing the entire time as there was music in the background. I was in so much pain for about four days after and they told me to come back because that wasn't normal. When I came back the same doctor said you're fine I don't know why they asked you to come back. The female doctor just has no empathy. Now let's get to the billing. I was told that I would have to pay about $300 out of pocket as the insurance didn't cover. About a couple months after the surgery they contacted me and said that the insurance wouldn't pay it all and then I had to pay another maybe $200 out of pocket. Umm what? Two months later? This is only the review for the front desk. I didn't get the opportunity to see the doctor but based on the short call I got from him last week he sounded reasonable. I just had the most absurd call with the front desk. I called two weeks ago for an appointment and was told that I will need to fill the paperwork first before any scheduling. That's ok so I waited and got two emails, one asking for X-ray and one asking for a whole list of other paperwork such as driver license stuff. I replied to one immediately and forgot to do the other one right away (full time working mom with two toddlers). I didn't think it's a big deal b/c they told me I won't be scheduled until I fill them up. However I got a missed call from the office happened on my bday when I was taking the kids out for a walk saying they had to cancel my appointment due to not filled paperworks. I was surprised they scheduled for me without me filling the documents. Also I never got any calls about the availability for any appointment as well. But anyway I replied in the original email that I am sorry and sent back all the requested documents that afternoon and requested a reschedule for this week. After that I did not get any calls or emails back so I figured to call the office again today to check. This is where this whole thing started. The woman who answered the call was so angry from the beginning saying that I cancelled on her last minute (which I got the call the day before and told the doctor that there might be a miscommunication) and stated that she sent me all 11 emails asking for documents before being scheduled. She went on and on and I tried to interrupt that I did not receive any emails and I did reply back to the one email I got but didn't get a response back. She went directly to attack me for being rude for 5min and said her office would not accept someone like me who don't know what I am doing and not following laws. I was beyond furious at this point as I was never accused for anything like this in my life. She hanged up on me before I even said anything else. Have you considered maybe it's a tech glitch or something?! I know everyone is under a lot of pressure in this pandemic but this is NOT the appropriate way to treat your patient or another human being. read more

This group was excellent! Good customer service, professionalism, bedside (chairside?), and COVID precautions. Dr. Wang and Ebony were great. I went in for wisdom tooth extraction and evaluation for an additional medical condition. Dr. Wang explained what the other condition was, how we could treat it, the options, etc. He was very patient and helped set up a treatment plan without being pushy or rushing me to decide. During the actual tooth extraction, his bedside manner was great and I appreciated the light jokes that were to help with my anxiety towards the extraction. I am a data scientists and appreciated the nerdy dad jokes. Ebony and the other staff were also great, they made sure I was comfortable and feeling OK and even followed up with me the day after extraction to make sure I was recovering well. Finally, I appreciate the COVID precautions. I was the only patient in the office and they make a good effort to limit exposure to other patients. Maybe the only downside are the pre-appointment forms. They aren't the best for mobile platforms and that little bit could probably use some tweaking but its a small inconvenience in contrast to the overall great experience. read more

Dr Calat is amazing! I was dreading the appointment to get a bone graft and implant thinking it would be painful and that there could be complications. The great thing is that it wasn't painful and afterwards, for a few days now, I haven't had any pain, swelling , or bleeding. Looking back, it's been easy and not something to be nervous about. Horrible experience!! I had seen Dr. Calat a few years ago, and I had a great experience. This time I called the office to make an appointment with Dr. Calat, but went i got to the office I was told I was seeing Dr. Carunchio. Also, when I made the appointment I told them I would need sedation for the procedure. I found Dr. Carunchio inexperienced and cold. She had no idea what some of my medications were, and asked me to explain how they worked. She told me she couldn't do the procedure under sedation, because one of the assistants had gone home sick earlier in the day. I hadn't eaten/drank anything since the night before, and now it was 3pm. Nobody called to tell me. I was told that my dental issue could be corrected in 2 procedures, but she wanted to stretch it into 3. Needless to say, I won't be seeing Dr. Carunchio again! Dr. Calat will be considered the best oral surgeon I've ever had (although he really is the mastermind of extraction.) after my appointment with him yesterday afternoon. My appointment was at 2 PM and I was to get just one wisdom tooth pulled, yet after an amazing panoramic X-ray and a clear explanation that this is the perfect time to get all of them pulled or atleast 2 of them, I changed my decision with the help of my parents at an amazing rate. (He's very affordable, along with the CareCredit plan!) Although this took a bit longer and I didn't go under until after 3 PM, Dr. Calat and his amazing staff waited for ME to be ready. Before I get to post-op, I really have to make a shutout to his team, everyone was up for a conversation and explained things to me clearly, they even put on the Shakira Pandora radio while I was under, talked to me about the college I was going to, and let me in on the pricing process. Very fun and eager! Loved every single one of his staff. For all of those afraid of sedation or feeling anything, don't be. You wake up after it's all done with no pain and maybe a bit loss of memory from before that. Once it's done, I felt so excited to live and be there! I had no complications and that was with getting all 4 out. I can not stress the amount of homey-ness and comfort I felt in that office, Dr. Calat even took a picture of my teeth and my dad and I for me! Dr. Calat is not only a great surgeon but a great person. You can tell by the way he speaks to you that he genuinely cares. I was worried about getting 4 wisdom teeth removed but afterwards I wouldn't recommend anyone else. From the consultation, Dr. Calat was very informative and answered any and all questions. He is very understanding and just the way he speaks to you is very soothing which is helpful when you're nervous. The surgery couldn't have gone better. I don't even remember any of it occurring. I was sedated and the last thing I heard was Dr. Calat say take a nice deep breath. The next thing I knew I was awake and the surgery was complete. I wasn't in any pain. Just some bleeding which lasted about a day which wasn't too bad. The next day I was feeling great, barely felt any pain and didn't have to use any painkillers. I recovered quickly and easily. I saw Dr. Carunchio for wisdom tooth extraction and a surgery to repair a tear in both of my ear lobes. She was incredibly professional; not only helping to explain the procedures, but also explaining how my insurance policy will cover it. She is definitely VERY knowledgeable at her craft. I get very squeamish with anything medical/needle related, so I obviously was not thrilled when I had to get this procedure. But Dr. Carunchio and her team did a great job making me feel comfortable. She did both procedures all in 1 day and did an incredible job. Any surgery you get isn't fun, but Dr. Carunchio made it quick, and as easy as it could be but also did a thorough job. My review is based on the front desk specifically the practice manager, her communication is extremely aggressive and condescending, It started from call one; She told me she couldn't undestand my English which, by the way is pretty good, but I do have an accent so I offered to send all my information via e-mail and her answer was "I don't know if you realize that we are in the middle of a pandemic, it has to be done by phone" which made no sense to me, what does that have to do with my insurance information but anyway. Dr. Paul is the nicest human being to ever walk this earth. He is genuinely so kind, and has amazing bedside manner. Getting a tooth pulled, even just your wisdom teeth is super scary, and can be traumatizing if you don't go to the right surgeon. Dr. Paul is that angelic oral surgeon you're looking for. He has a very calm demeanor, makes you feel comfortable, and most importantly SAFE. He is not going to recommend you anything you don't need, and won't rush you into anything. I have literally cried in his office and he was able to calm me down, and have me leaving feeling so much better than when I walked in. He's upfront about what procedures need to be done, and the potential costs if insurance doesn't cover it. It's definitely better to know the max amount you need to pay, rather than get a scary huge bill later with no notice. I tell all my friends to see Dr. Paul if you're in need of an oral surgeon. I usually visit his Hoboken office, but have ventured into the city to see him at the Bryant park location as well. I would literally go anywhere he is working even if it is not conviennent for me, because I trust him that much. My dentist sings his praises as well, but I think I might be his number one fan, and I take such pride in that! On top of all of that, his offices are super clean, and his staff is just as wonderful as he is. I love them all. read more

I am so pleasantly surprised with my wisdom teeth removal! So much so that I decided to write a review, which I rarely do. They were able to schedule me in relatively quickly, especially since some places make you wait 2+ months. I had Dr. Wang and his incredible assistant (I cannot remember her name unfortunately) that helped me throughout the procedure. I had a bit of a complicated situation, but Dr. Wang patiently walked me through all of my options. I'm not one to make decisions on the spot, but he definitely presented my options clearly and confidently. This review is solely based on my experience with the front desk (Yuri) and billing (Leslie). I went in to have my wisdom teeth extracted on my left side with Dr. Farag in April. The experience went well, she was very sweet and answered all of my questions. I healed well for the most part but was still experiencing pain on the left side of my face, that is ongoing but has just been summed up as TMJ pain (although i wasn't experiencing this pain before i had the surgery so not really sure about that.) The troubles and attitudes started to come after i came back in several times for pain that i was still experiencing that is apparently a MYSTERY and the third and last time i went in, the front desk (Yuri) made me aware that apparently my insurance didn't cover a BIG chunk of my procedure, which is not her fault, but boy did attitudes change when i told them i would not be able to pay all of that money upfront right then and there. I am a stay at home mom and my husband is the only provider for our family. Yuri, proceeded to tell me " I HAVE to pay it today" and i informed her that was not going to be possible. So, she spoke with the billing department (Leslie) and they were able to come up with a payment plan for me which was much appreciated. I filled out the paperwork as i read it and handed it to Yuri and she LOOKED at it and said thank you and i left. I get a call today saying the attempts to collect the money declined due to an INCOMPLETE credit card number and i made her aware that the number she was looking at was my account number as thats what the paperwork asked for so thats what i wrote down and when i handed her the paperwork to review she looked at it and sent me on my way. Is it not her job to review paperwork given to her and make sure everything is filled out properly? that's how it has always been to any office i have been to. Furthermore, i began to read out my debit card number to her and paused for maybe a millisecond and she said " THATS NOT A VALID DEBIT CARD NUMBER, I NEED MORE NUMBERS." to which i said, i wasn't done and if she would let me finish i would give her the rest and had me wait on the phone while she processed the payment which she made very clear (like i was some sort of convict or something) Not to mention almost TWO whole months went by with no one contacting me to get the information they needed. It ended with me speaking to the billing department representative (Leslie) who was also rude and treated me like i was a penniless peasant and just did not want to deal with me and ended the call with them revoking my payment plan and said i had to pay in full by the end of the month or it will go to collections. I don't know what patients they normally deal with but i don't know who has $$$$$$$ to cough up upfront and unexpected. Meanwhile i paid what was due the day of my appointment and was under the impression my insurance would pay the rest and when that seemed like it wouldn't be the case, the claws came out when i told them i was in no position to pay the full amount on the spot. I was happy to make the monthly payments and happy to give them the info they needed and was met with bullying and complete and utter disrespect from the very start. read more

I went for wisdom tooth extraction. Bo Wang called me before the initial consultation and gave me a heads up what to expect. Because of Covid they were letting only patient at a time and they took all precautions. All documentation were exchanged online. On the day of extraction, I opted for IV sedation, it was all done in about 1.5 hours. Smooth, had the usual pain for couple of days. I had to see Dr. Calat as an emergency referral from Dental Arts of Hoboken. I had a rotten tooth with a hook root that just wouldn't come out! I was in a specialist office in Jersey City and told at 9 am that I needed to have a root canal tooth extracted due to an infection. By 11 am I was in Hoboken and was seen by Dr. Wang. The Staff and Dr. Wang were so pleasant and professional and the procedure went well. In the evening I had a concern about the antibiotics. I got the answering service and even though it was just a question, they notified Dr. Wang and to my surprise he called me back within 5 minutes with an answer. I contemplated leaving this review for some time but after multiple unpleasant experiences, and due to the fact that this is a medical practice, I feel I'd be doing an injustice to future potential patients by not leaving one. To begin with, they had me come in for my consultation 90 minutes early just to leave me in the downstairs foyer for 30 minutes, after that I was sat in the waiting room for another 15 and then was moved to an open plan X-Ray room, which was more of a glorified hallway and certainly not private, it was also only a few feet from the waiting area where other patients were sitting and in earshot. The entirety of my consult and evaluation were then done in that room by Dr. Carunchio who quite literally stuck her fingers in my mouth for 10 seconds and then made me feel bad about my needle phobia, she also went to no length to offer me alternate sedation options and when I asked if she could recommend a practice that could work with my phobia, I was met with an instant "no". I was then charged $145 after being forgotten about in the X-Ray room; I say forgotten because a woman I had not yet interacted with from behind the front desk asked me if I needed anything as I'd been sitting unattended for yet another 20 minutes.
