Unlike a couple of his colleagues, who were rude and dismissive on the phone (and one of whom has yet to call me back, a week later), John answered the phone promptly (on a Sunday!), addressed all of my questions, asked all of the right ones, and waited patiently while I consulted with my wife on his quote. He came the very next day, and completed the job in less than a day and a half. John provided expert input in choosing a shade and finish (who knew that white paint is not just white paint, or the secret to choosing the right white?). He showed up equipped with a copy of his license, insurance and bonding papers. Although he had to move some furniture and other items to do the job (and did so single-handedly and without complaint), he was able to get the job done with absolutely no disruption to the household. And it is truly the best paint job I have ever seen. John's business is called East Bay PAINTER, but it turns out that's not all he does. While he was working, I asked whether he happened to know a good handyman who could remove an old decaying wall cabinet and install shelves. John was happy to do the job, came back a couple of days later, and -- once again -- did a fast, efficient, reliable and professional job, even hauling away the old cabinet. I came to Yelp to find a painter to fix the mess this handyman had left behind. Well, I should have come to Yelp in the first place . . . I called John at East Bay Painter and told him our situation. He came by our house in an hour and gave us his assessment of what needed to be done and quoted a price cheaper than the stupid handyman from Craigslist. Within a week from his visit, he got a sample from the house to get the matching paint, painted the messed up area for an amazingly affordable price. I never dreamed that I could afford such a professional and pleasant painter for such a reasonable price! In 2019, I called Steve and he came by to give me a bid which I thought was fair. I was having the entire outside of a Victorian 4 color house painted so lots of decisions to be made. I figured I would be looking at these colors for the next 20 years so I had better like them! Steve was super professional and patient with my 22 paint samples and a couple of changes along the way. My home is beautiful and I love the colors! When I had a hard time choosing, Steve even offer guidance along the way about what he thought would work best. He did a great job, a lot of attention to detail and was very communicative. My neighbors even commented on how great he was to work with as well. Steve had to access their yard to paint a portion of the home. He worked around their schedule, as one of my neighbors works from home and didn't want noise during certain hours. They just finished the exterior of our house, which required them to go through the house to reach the back. Each day they tidied up the first floor areas and picked up their drop cloths so we could access the living areas on that floor without going through a work zone. I was really impressed with the amount of preparation they did on the house before they even started painting, and feel the house is well protected now in addition to the aesthetics of a crisp paint job. Alex's quote wasn't the highest or lowest of those that I received. It was very fair. He also spent the most amount of time checking over our house and walking me through how he would have his team prep the house for the best results. Once they started working they were extremely through. I think all in all they were working on our house for 6 weeks? There were about 4-5 coats of paint on the whole house. It's very thick and I expect this paint job to last much longer than the prior one. We also had a lot of repairs that were discovered that needed to be done once the scaffold went up. The prior owners had deferred a lot of maintenance as well as left over 30 years of cords on exterior which Alex's team cleaned up. Alex was extremely kind to help find tradesman to come help fix things for us. We paid extra for that but the prices were all very fair. From the beginning, we could tell they were going to do the job right. At the outset, it was clear that Bill put a lot of consideration into the initial quote; he was also transparent that there were factors that could only be identified once the project began (as with any major construction project). Once work began, their dedication to, and pride in, their work was immediately made clear by the way they prepped the worksite to ensure it would be shielded from the SF elements- they did so much more than one typically sees from other companies, which signaled to us that our home was in good hands. It was amazing to watch the crew expertly strip away 100+ years of paint jobs layered on top of each other, and, when unforeseen issues came up, they took ownership of fixing them (notwithstanding that they weren't responsible for the issue in the first place)- for example, when they discovered that almost all the shingles were disintegrating upon touch, they pivoted to cutting new ones on-site, by hand, and didn't alter their original quote. We couldn't have asked for a better partner to think through decisions big and small. Our project involved replacing every window on the entire front of the house (which they ordered and installed), expanding and replacing the garage door, adding new lighting, shoring up the front steps and restoring various decorative elements. We so appreciated their introductions to, and managing of, the appropriate tradespeople (electricians, etc.); they ensured that this work was all coordinated seamlessly. They are incredibly knowledgeable about historic aspects of SF homes and do their research when approaching the restoration of a property. Kyle designed a sun for the top of the house -- spending endless time iterating on the details to ensure it fit the character/period of the home, while having enough dimension to stand out -- and built it from scratch; he is an amazing woodworker and it was a pleasure to watch him work. When we showed them a picture of a house with a color scheme we liked, they color-matched it perfectly, and were happy to mix and test out various shade options until we landed on the final combination. And the team! Bill, Kyle, Ryan and Raf are simply the best. We loved having them around every day and enjoyed getting to know them and hearing about the process. I can say, unequivocally, that they there are truly wonderful people. They were incredibly kind to our 2-year old daughter (she was very sad the day they left), always accommodating of our scheduling needs (e.g., pausing the louder work during our daughter's nap if she was home from school) and kept us up to date on the progress. They take such pride in their work, even going above and beyond to ensure that they left interior spaces better than they found them (for example, they patched/painted interior cracks that were revealed over the course of the project, notwithstanding that this was well beyond the scope of their work). We are so proud of the final product, and frequently get compliments from neighbors and other passersby, and will certainly turn to Excel in the future when we have additional (interior) painting or restoration needs.
