I've hired a lot of contractors over the years for extensive home renovations - at least six or seven, I'd say. Nelson is unequivocally the best I've ever worked with, hands-down. He did an extensive kitchen and bath renovation for us and we couldn't be happier. The work that he and his team delivers is high quality and exacting, and I am an architect and have high standards. He does things right because he too has high standards and because that's who he is. He also is wonderful when he comes across those unexpected issues that always come up. He talks it over with you calmly and presents options with detailed quotes. If it's not a big deal in terms of time and materials, his team often just takes care of it without charging, which is pretty unusual. He did that over and over in this project with us, and I really appreciated it and think it kept the project cost way down. We were facing a significant home surgery and had to take a leap of faith, and Nelson delivered. He comes highly recommended! A rite of passage for new homeowners is to deal with a major repair. Less than a year after moving in, heavy rains led to water from outside making its way inside without invitation. Noticing some damaged wood that was likely to blame, we called on Nelson to help. Of the various contractors we solicited for quotes, Nelson was the most through and punctual. And throughout, Nelson and team were reliable, communicative and provided expert work for a job which started as a "minor" siding repair but expanded (to our dismay) in scope as increasing amounts of rotting, structural wood from the previous owner was uncovered. Although it was disconcerting to see how much damage we would need to address, Nelson was sympathetic and assured us that it would be straightforward to fix and advised on a couple of different approaches, which we agreed to. His team arrived on time every day and worked around weather conditions to perform carpentry, waterproofing, and offered continuous updates. We also hired Nelson's team to paint afterwards, and are very happy with the results. By the end we started dreaming about other projects or repairs we could accomplish and started getting his feedback on those as well! One thing we learned is that it's necessary to make sure the discussions are thoroughly documented-we had a couple of misunderstandings about what was included or not after verbal discussions, which we either resolved through the contract, or realized after the fact that it was something discussed but never written down so we let it go. But making the agreement itself was a breeze, and Nelson is good humored, flexible and was easy to work with at all of the stages of the process. I used Nelson again recently (November-December 2023) to remodel and retile my guest bathroom. I had previously used Nelson services twice before and was thrilled with the quality of his work (see my prior YELP review from Oct. 2022). When I decided to redo the bathroom, I knew I wanted Nelson to do the work, and didn't bid it out to additional contractors, simply because I knew the quality of work I would be receiving and that the price would be fair and reasonable (which it was). Almost needless to say, I'm absolutely thrilled with how it came out. The craftsmanship was flawless. Again, what is most appreciated is the professionalism of the team, not just from skills perspective--which is excellent--but also for the thoughtful, organized and clean way in which they work. I would have expected dust to be everywhere throughout the house--but they took great care to limit the impact of their work and it was minimal. Everything swept out and put in their place before they left each day. I continue to appreciate Nelson's creativity as well, anticipating potential issues, always talking them through with me, and always having a suggestion or solution. I have known Nelson for ten years: As a private homeowner and during my tenure as a property manager for a 13 unit building in San Rafael. He is my "go to" person. He has renovated 3 bathrooms for my husband and myself and will renovate two kitchens for us during 2023.
