FYI - I do read other reviews (mostly before I select a place) and in cases like there were there are a bunch of very negative reviews/comments about the owner/Stephen, I want to add my corresponding experience. Our instructor was Cat and we were in a group with just one other person. Cat was great at explaining the steps and giving us tips to improve. We got in the water shortly after and Cat started pushing us into our waves. After a few waves, I started getting my own waves and Cat provided a few suggestions for what to do the next time. The only weird thing was that Cat got out of the water with the other guy in the group to show him stuff and was out for longer than I expected. My fiancé definitely needed more assistance than doing it on his own, but he kept trying. When Cat finally did get back in the water, she didn't really start pushing either of us. Despite that, I still thought she was good and thought the value was worth it.

The instructor, Taylor, was so kind and patient and made the lesson so fun that neither kid wanted to take a break during the 90-minute session. To put that into perspective, we had to walk three blocks with surfboards, and they required three breaks to make it through that experience. Both boys ended up being able to stand on the board and could not wait for their next lesson. My son struggles to keep doing something if it's difficult, but thanks to Taylor's encouragement, he kept failing and kept getting back up and trying again. They were both very calm and fun throughout the whole lesson and adapted to everyone's level. Luke expressed that he likes to talk/teach a lot and gauged our comfort with receiving all of the information. Personally, I loved it and wanted to absorb all the tidbits he had to share. He was very open to questions and repeating himself if I needed him to. I honestly learned so much about the ocean and surfing. Mike was great. Met us with board and wetsuits and met each of us at our level. He was very hands on and out there in the water with us the whole time. We met by the bathrooms of El Porto by lifeguard station 12 and picked up our wetsuits from their cars. From there, we headed towards a less crowded portion of the water by the rocks, and did a quick yoga flow before going into the basics of how to pop up and hold the board. After the lesson, we got assigned our boards and went off into the water. I think both instructors tried to spread their attention as evenly as possible. I was able to stand up multiple times and surf some one-foot waves (go me!). The time flew by, and once it was over, we brought the surfboards back to their cars. They'll take Venmo for tips. I would suggest wearing your flip flops to the beach since the ground was really hot, and also bringing a water bottle for post-surf. There's paid parking available in the lot although the meters seem to be broken since I still got a ticket even though my parking should've been valid. Otherwise there's very limited street parking. You can leave your valuables in the instructor's car. You can book private lessons on the website or small group lessons as well. Definitely book the lesson - it's a great workout and you'll have so much fun!

I couldn't find street parking, so I paid $12.00 for the day and parked in the beach parking lot, which was extremely convenient. The lesson included teaching instructions on the sand and some adjustments while in the water, a borrowed wet suit and surf board. I signed up for a group lesson which worked for my learning style. It provided the chance for me to try and experiment on my own while the instructor was working with other students. The instructors were very welcoming and friendly.
