We stayed here for three nights a couple of weeks ago. Booking and check in was simple. The staff are very nice and accommodating. The grounds are very well maintained. There is an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a kids play area, a beach, and many trails. We stayed in the lodge. The room was large. We were picking up my son from camp and I though we would have to share a room, but it was large enough that we ran out and bought a cheap air mattress so he could have his own bed. There are cabins on the property, a supper club, and a coffee bar, but we did not try any of those. The resort was quite busy. There were groups of all ages. While our room was large, the bathroom was very dated and in need of a renovation. There was a binder highlighting aspects of the lodge, but some of the pages had mold growing on them. I thought there was daily room cleaning, but our room was never touched. Perhaps I missed something. Definitely a place to check out if you are looking for lodging in the area. read more

Did not stay at the resort, but wanted to share. I was on the lake and the battery on my pontoon died. No one was on the lake and not knowing what to do, called them asking for assistance. Alex sent someone out right away, jumped my battery, and I was back in business in no time! This is a must go to supper club if you are in the Wisconsin Northwoods. It is a resort on beautiful Lake Thompson just before getting into Rhinelander. I spent many a Friday evenings here when I lived locally. I was so happy to return and I was not disappointed. Not only is the menu and food delicious, but the people you meet when having a cocktail at the bar reminds you of why Wisconsin is so wonderful. Even though backwoods Wisconsin gives me a genuine fear of being murdered via serial killer (looking at you Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Walter Ellis), a gigantic brown bear who devours humans in addition to picnic baskets, White supremacists (I'm caramel colored, yo), or by a Packer fan (http://bit.ly/2dELs7a), I... truly loved my stay at the Holiday Acres Resort in Rhinelander. And I dropped a few stereotypes, too... They have acres for days with these quaint red wood cabins scattered throughout their land. Like... imagine Little House on the Prairie (which I think took place in Minnesota), but real life. Damn it. I should've downloaded or brought the book on this trip. Ah, so many regrets... Okay, to the point: ***** I. BOOKING We were there for a wedding, and when my boo called the process was relatively simple for booking a room. Cabins fill up quick, especially during the summer months, so make sure to plan ahead. II. LOCATION & PARKING Holiday Acres Resort can be a bit difficult to find, even with GPS, but the entrance is where Tre Fiske Road starts to bend east. After you pass through the gravel road, the check in building will be to your left. Since you're sitting on acres upon acres of pristine forest and prairie, parking is not an issue. I'm sure Woodstock could've been held here. III. CABIN Our two room cabin maybe had the similar square footage of a typical hotel room with two queen sized beds. This one, though, came with a fully stocked kitchen, living room (with hunter camouflaged TV and remote control, lol), and fire place. Oh, and most importantly, they have REALLY thin walls. So if you're sharing a cabin with someone, or another couple, make sure to be mindful of your body noises or noises when checking out someone else's body (nah mean? Lol). IV. BED You won't find any foam mattress there, but the beds are adequate and you'll probably get a decent night's sleep. OK, let's be real. You'll probably get totally sloshed, and occasionally find yourself wandering in the dark trying to find your cabin because street lights to not exist. And when you find your bed, whatever time in the morning you do so, you'll be happy to lay on something comfortable. There's a bar there that serves a pretty outstanding old fashioned at a decent price. V. BATHROOMS The shower pressure was surprisingly good (I like a couple notches below the feeling of water from a strong garden hose) and warm. The toilet worked fine, and, most importantly, clean. Me like. VI. OTHER TIDBITS +The resort doesn't have any streetlights, so make sure one of your friends, partner, whomever, is your designated shoulder-leaner-holder. +It's incredibly quiet in the morning, and I finally understand what Simon and Garfunkel meant by the "Sound of Silence." If you love to meditate, it couldn't be more perfect. Errr, maybe if Simon and Garfunkel actually meditated with you. Oooooh. +Lake Thompson is ideal for skinny dipping. Or so I've heard. VII. OVERALL I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this resort, and I would definitely return if I had the chance. read more

My husband and I had a great stay in one of the cabin's this past weekend! It was pretty worn down but not too awful that it infringed in our stay. The cabin was stocked well and while too cold to use it, also came with it's own fishing boat. The staff was beyond gracious and the food delish! We will definitely be back! read more

Great resort that retains a sense of time & place not often found yet everything is clean and well maintained which can't be said of every place I've stayed in the area. The grounds are beautiful with flowers everywhere and cabins interspersed throughout a large property that also includes basketball/tennis/shuffleboard/sand volleyball courts for those who are inclined. The "beach" is small but has a number of chairs and picnic tables for sitting plus you've got a communal fire pit a little way back and a separate area with boating/fishing piers. Also, the on-site Three Coins restaurant is excellent (not cheap, but well worth the cost) and there's even a little diner that's open for breakfast and takes you back to a different time. It's not the cheapest place in the Northwoods but it's one of the best run resorts you'll find and they even have some units that are dog friendly so there were a number of dogs around (including mine). If you're of the mindset that new is always better, this may not be your place. However, if you appreciate Northwoods culture and history the Holiday Acres Resort is a great place to immerse yourself and it's been family run for many generations. My family has been coming to Holiday Acres since 1993. There is nothing that I look forward to more every other year than heading up to the peaceful North woods of WI. Whether we are going on one of the organized trail rides, cruising Lake Thompson on the pontoon, or just sitting around the campfire, we always have a great time. We enjoyed a cozy backwoods stay here in November, complete with snow storm. We didn't stay in a cabin due to the two night minimum, but did happen to be there during jazz night at Three Coins, which was a good time. The lady at check-in was friendly and made us feel right at home. The room was dog friendly and had doors that opened to the outside, which was nice for taking a quick walk. We cut through the pool to get to the restaurant for breakfast the next morning, and someone was sleeping on the couch by the pool. Not sure if this is a normal occurrence or someone who got kicked out of their room the night before, but we soon found a waitress in the restaurant, as we were the only early-morning guests for breakfast, and enjoyed our meal while looking out onto the snow. The stay was peaceful and enjoyable, and i would welcome a getaway there again some time. read more

Spent out 40th wedding anniversary at Holiday Acres. Wonderful time. Rented a cottage so peaceful. Absolutely spotless. Comfortable beds. We rented a pontoon boat for one afternoon the lake is beautiful and just the right size for cruising or water sports. Rumor is you can even fish. We had dinner at the 3 Coins Restaurant twice it is easily as good as anything we would find in the Madison or suburban Chicago area. We will be back. Can't say enough. We just returned from another fantastic week that included family and friend annual reunion. There were so many 3rd and 4th generation children that were enjoying beach time, breakfast in the coffee shop to tossing there three coins into the water fountain after the first class dinner in the Three coin restaurant. We adults would close the nights in the customer friendly bar in the beautiful rustic lodge. From the candy hut to the tennis tournament to all the water sports fun was had by all. i LOVE this place. My family (husband, me, 2 year old son) stayed here in the summer. Perfect retro getaway. Clean, updated rooms but very 1950's setting on a crystal clear lake. Our second time here. Liked it even better this time. We were really off-season, and booking late, so no gift shop, limited hours on certain things, and couldn't get a cabin. But pretty much had the hotel to ourselves. There was a reunion group from St. Norbert's in the pool with us one night, a fun bunch, and the next day, pool was just us. They keep the pool area really warm, along with the water, and the pool is freaking huge. Breakfast two days in a row we're the only ones in there. Christine came out from the kitchen, took care of us the first morning, amazing breakfast, and the next morning, Sunday, had their country breakfast. I've never liked the look of biscuits and gravy, so this was a first for me, and already I know I'll never have it better. Their website pointed us to a great day trip, checking out a bunch of waterfalls and rapids a little ways to the east. They'd put away a lotta stuff for the season, but dug up paddles and life jackets for us so we could go canoeing. Had the entire Thompson Lake to ourselves, deathly quiet, climbed around one of the islands for a while. The second to last night I hung out in the bar, and the bartender is a fascinating guy who's played a lot of b-ball and had great stories. Also made a great recommendation on the dark ale I had a few of. We get a kick out of downtown Rhinelander, so proximity to town (which requires a scary-ass ride through pitch-blackness on frighteningly winding roads) is a plus. Really, really nice people, great food and service. Are the rooms and facilities old? You betcha. But everything is clean, well maintained, and if the damn place wasn't so far north of us, we'd be here every couple of months. Can't wait to come back. read more

We stayed here on a recent visit to Rhinelander - my husband's hometown. The exterior ambiance is very rustic, but the rooms are amazingly comfortable. (Seriously, I've stayed in big-city hotels that didn't have rooms this comfy, and I promise they were more expensive.) The staff was excellent and helpful, the pool was in good repair, the grounds were gorgeous (what I saw of them; we didn't do much in the way of walks or activities, which is a pity as there were so many). And the food was STELLAR. Thank you to everyone whose reviews steered us to the Friday night and Sunday morning buffets especially, because WOW were those good. (Yes, Friday dinner is way fancier than Sunday brunch, and if you ask me quality the first is the better of the two, but they are both very good, and good deals.) How can you feel melancholy after a week at a resort where you are treated like family, you enjoy cozy cabins, a horseback ride ending with a hearty breakfast, crazy good water skiing and fabulous fresh air? You become higgily piggly when it is time to leave. Words and "stars" can't really describe the resort owners in the hospitality they provide their guests. Update: Feeling rather guilty for leaving a 3 star review, I decided to visit the front desk to see if any other rooms may be available, that would be both more accommodating and affordable for our family. They simply couldn't have been nicer. We were given two room options, with the option to check both out before committing. They both worked better, and were more affordable as well. Huge win, and shows just how a committed and accommodating the staff truly is. Still looking forward to a remodel, until then Holiday Acres is still a strong 4 star accommodation. read more

i have nothing but fond memories of this place. my family and i used to go up here when i was in grade school. we would rent a cabin and it was so fun!! they had this great coffee shop with bumper pool! they had pinball in the hotel area near the pool! they have this sweet restaurant called the Three Coins. Been staying here once a year for almost 10yrs now. People are nice, cottages do the job...but it is WAY over priced for what you get. We used to stay at Millers Sherwood Vista every year until they shut down...and they were priced much more reasonably. We only stay there because they can hold my large group and we love rhinelander. For the price you'd think you're staying at some beach front suite in Santa Monica, Ca. Honestly. The restaurant is sub-par but again the service is good and the staff is very nice. They have metal boats and kayaks that you can borrow which is awesome. The pool area is nice and clean. Nice to have wifi and television in each cottage, but still...over priced. If they updated the place and kept the prices the same...then I'd absolutely give them 4-5 stars. read more

We had a big group of about 12 come in for a Friday fish fry and loved our entire experience at Holiday Acres! Their drinks at the bar were delicious and the food was just as great! Despite it being a Friday night, we got all of our food in a timely manner and the entire staff was very friendly. They have a great patio as well, which we decided to utilize after dinner! Booked a cabin for the entire week for 10 ppl (aged 1-70, with a quadriplegic). Booked their largest cabin to accommodate our big family and because it was "handicap accessible". We know that phrase is often abused so we inquired about specific needs we had like a ramp, wide doorways, accessible bathroom, roll-in shower, etc. We were told the cabin had all of those things, WE WERE WRONG. The ramp to enter the cabin was so steep we had to go down it backwards to keep control of the wheelchair. It was what I would refer to as "step steep made into a ramp". I would say it was an 8ft long ramp for a 4.5 ft height change. The "roll-in shower" was maybe 30 inches wide and had a 5 inch step to get into it. No wheelchair would get into the shower. We use a lift for our individual and had to make a make-shift ramp system in order to even get the person into the shower enough to have reach with the shower wand. Luckily we had some of our own portable ramps with us. The other bathrooms in the cabin were tubs with glass sliding doors, not an option. We were told it was a 1-2 inch lip to the shower, boy were they wrong. When we told them of our issue, they had no solution to even offer. Cabin itself had many problems. The furniture in the family room area was BROKEN. When you sat down it caved in on the backside making it near impossible to use. We had to stuff pillows in it to be able to sit without getting back aches. We asked them for replacement furniture and they said they had some but never brought it. Maybe the next guests will get to enjoy the replaced furniture, maybe not. If you get there and the green plaid furniture is in there, don't sit down, its broken. The cabin had a terrible ANT problem which we told the front office about, it was not addressed at all. Garbage disposal worked on and off the whole week, had to have maintenance fix it at one point. Fridge leaked all over floor everyday. Had to clean up water mess daily. Shower ceiling & corners were covered in black mold/mildew in the master. Many of the windows were opened by cracks where mosquitos would come in and eat you alive. The mosquitos are unbelievable populated. Not even bug spray helped. Especially with windows opened by cracks letting them inside. Exterior doors that wouldn't open due to warping and twisting. Pretty sure that's a safety hazard in the event of an emergency. Water front area that went with the cabin was overgrown in weeds and water vegetation. Other docks were obviously being treated but not this one. Rented a pontoon boat for 4 hours, crazy expensive. Boat was moldy, and sticky from sun rot. Nice and quiet. Clean. A bit run down, but not too bad. Scenic. While I didn't eat at the restaurant it is supposed to be one of the better eats in the area. Parking lot certainly gets crowded for dinner. read more

Our family stayed in 2 cabins for 4 nights starting the day after Christmas. We had a fantastic experience with some snow but not enough to snowmobile which we have done in the past. The resort is right on the snowmobile trail. We were able to CC ski on their excellent trails. The pool and sauna were very nice. We also ate breakfast and dinner at the Three Coins restaurant and it was very good especially the dinner with Walleye and Salmon. The owners are very friendly and helpful as was all the staff. This group is the worst we spent $12,000 on a hot tub they charged us $1200 to put it into the house and when we asked to get help and would pay per hour to get help to take it out they refused us actually told me no it'll cost you 250+150+150 an hour so unethical such a bad group read more

We got married at Holiday Acres in June, and can't say enough good things about our experience both leading up to and during our weekend there. The entire staff from the grounds crew, servers, hotel and restaurant staff to the managers, were excellent. Even the owners checked in with us to make sure everything was going smoothly. Rhonda, the event coordinator was exceptional. We planned the wedding from Colorado and she made the process extremely easy. The whole staff truly worked to accommodate our every request and truly made our weekend one to remember. They were open to various areas for us to set up our tent and for the location of the ceremony, and also worked with us in case of incremental weather, which we did have on Friday evening. They also opened up a nearby vacant cabin for us to use as extra bathrooms during the evening. Further, the reception food was excellent (stuffed mushroom ravioli, chicken, and beef tips) both from our perspective and numerous of our guest comments. Our guests enjoyed Holiday Acres facilities for the entirety of the weekend. Kids bounced back and forth between swimming in the lake, the indoor pool, and the playground. Everyone enjoyed the beach, pontoon rides, and sitting around the fire in the evening. The brunch buffet was expansive and excellent, and everyone was happy with their rustic, clean, and functional cabins and hotel rooms. We will be back. read more
