Growing up Portuguese, bread is quintessential. One night, my husband and I went to dinner at Bom Apetite, and when the bread basket hit the table, I immediately noticed it was different. Not papo secos. I quickly asked the waiter about it, and he told me it was a loaf from Holiday Bakery. Fast forward to Saturday am....I wanted to make kale soup for the family dinner and instantly thought of that bread. I went early Saturday morning to Holiday Bakery and, as expected for a great Portuguese bakery, there was a line about eight people deep. I bought two loaves for a total of $5.......such a steal. There were so many other bakery treats calling my name, but with it being the New Year, I tried to behave. That said, let me tell you... this bread was outstanding. A semi-hard crust with an incredibly soft, fluffy center. Add a little butter and it melts in your mouth. It was the perfect pairing with the soup, and the kids couldn't stop eating it. Every time we buy something different and it always tastes good. For the first time ever, we decided to buy a coffee. It's called galao but don't be afraid that it's made with expresso because it tastes like a regular coffee from those expensive places but half the price. It's also worth going inside and getting that linguica roll for lunch or breakfast. Best linguica roll in town. Obviously the best bread in the city! You will not be disappointed! read more

Disgusting! My husband brought home a box of pastries earlier in the week and they "looked" amazing but were probably made last month! The cannolis were literally like rubber and some other cake pastry was dry and stale. First and last time I will ever pay for something here. Hint - cannolis should be filled the same day you are selling them. If stuff doesn't sell after a few days, you are a bakery and need to throw it away and not charge people for stale items. Always fresh and delicious pastry and desserts, Tiramisu and Chocolate Mousse, so good. They offer savory food: Cacoila, linguicia rolls, fresh bread you can have sliced. I haven't been in New Bedford since 2015 and needed my custard fix. I ordered 2 custards and 1/2 dozen pops. The custards were still warm out of the oven and I ate one with a spoon. Heaven. Perfect consistency. When I got home I made a sandwich with one of the pops and did a little dance because even though they were a little smushed from being in my carry on and 6 hours of travel, they were just like I remembered. This place is within walking distance of my apartment and it's a good thing the walk isn't short! You need to walk off the calories gained from the delightful sweet bread, the biscoitus, eclairs, flan or any number of wonderful delights. They actually display sweetbread in aluminum baking pans on the wall!!...you pick either the large or small. You cannot resist the sweet smells wafting around the entrance. The place always has customers and I am usually one of the few English speaking customers. They have a little coffee shop and they also sell milk and eggs to boot! Old school city bakery heavy on the sweets. primarily Portuguese with wonderful looking pastries, malassadas, fresh farmer cheese and of course: pops and other savory breads. Again, I behaved and got some decadent pastries and cannoli for a friend getting out of the hosp, but had none myself! I did treat self to a crusty Portuguese boule to have with suppa tonight. This is the best cacoila in the city, without a doubt. Codfish balls are good, too. More of a savory bakery, although the desserts are extremely attractive and complicated. There's not a profusion of desserts, though. More of a balance between food and dessert, with lots of bread and that INCREDIBLE cacoila. read more
