Great location, plenty of parking, helpful and friendly staff. I was given a handicapped accessible room, which I didn't really care for - the bathroom sink had no room to put toiletries/curling iron. Shower was a big roll-in shower that splashed the floor, even with the curtain closed. The shade on the window wouldn't go up, it was one of those "old fashioned" types where you pull a little on the bottom and it should go up (no pull cords, etc). It kind of looked like someone pulled it down as far as it could go and broke it. I love natural light, so I ended up using a hanger from the closet (with the clips) and I folded the shade up and clipped it. Breakfast was ok - your typical continental along with flavorless/powdered scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon (depending on the day), potatoes....but they do have a pancake making machine, which I really liked. Coffee, hot chocolate and tea available 24/7. Minor complaints, so I would stay here again when in the area. read more

This was a great place to stay. The only reason I gave it 4 was there were a couple of issues that forced us to switch rooms but the staff was simply outstanding during that. Calvin, in particular really made sure that we were taken care of and that we were comfortable. He even took additional steps to ensure that our stay was pleasant. I will be back in State College next year and will most likely stay there again. It is alto convenient to Penn State and plenty of restaurants. read more

It has been my pleasure to stay here on more than one occasion. * The common areas are stunning and beautifully maintained. * The rooms are up-to-date and spotless. * The staff is competent and friendly. * It's located in a beautiful courtyard. * There is a Texas Roadhouse and an Outback just a few seconds walk away. * Many other restaurants are a two or three minute drive. A Holiday Inn Express is the low end of this chain but this hotel does not feel like a budget property. You will be pleasantly surprised with your stay here. Visited this hotel in October 2010 for a five-day business trip. Nice looking hotel in an area with several other hotels (Hampton Inn, Marriott Springhill Suites, maybe one more.) Convenient location with several restaurants within a few hundred yards - an Olive Garden, an Outback, and a Texas Roadhouse. Easy check in, nice lobby. My room was quite large with comfortable beds. Each double bed had four pillows, two each marked "firm" and "soft" which they were, giving you nice options. There's a sink in the living area of the room along with the sink in the bathroom, which is a real benefit if there are two of you who need to get ready simultaneously. A small sofa in the room, and a good work area. Very uncomplicated wireless internet access with a strong signal. No bathtub - which is fine with me, I'm not big on bathtubs, and even less so of hotel bathtubs - but a nice shower with a good shower head and great control over the force of the water pressure. Great staff; they hooked me up with some shaving cream after I ran out. Breakfast buffet is better than average. Warm cinnamon muffin things, very decent scrambled eggs and decent sausage, along with cereals, milk, pretty good coffee, and very good orange juice. My only complaint was being faced with Faux News on the TV, an appetite killer first thing in the morning. Like too many hotels, this one has fallen into the cheesy disposable plastic cups instead of real glass. That's a pet peeve of mine, but seems to be becoming the norm in most hotels of this class and even above. It's so common I can't call it a negative any more, but hotels that stick with glass glasses definitely get extra points from me these days. Rates seem very competitive, but my company may be getting a break as we use this property pretty heavily. I'm likely to be back periodically on business and will definitely endeavor to stay here again, I'm very impressed. Five stars for the class (OK, it's no Four Seasons, but it's VERY nice for a moderately priced property.) read more

We had two double beds...I was not given a choice online, but was told I could call after the booking to request a different room...but the two DBs were fine. Easy check in, very helpful people. There were some tasty, free snacks available for us. Room clean, beds comfortable. Breakfast included was about what you'd expect. Their signature item is cinnamon rolls, which were excellent. Outback Steakhouse next door was not crowded. The crowd was at the Texas Roadhouse across a side street...easy walk...the food was very good. LOTS of parking available. One thing about the toilet: It was WAY too low, shallow and small...like it was built for a kid to use that was just out of diapers. If you are tall, it would be very uncomfortable. Plus, if your are a man...did I mention that the toilet was WAY too low, shallow and small, with the a very high water level? You have to constantly flush to get the water level down. It was game day and they let us have late check out. One thing you should ask about is the shuttle from the hotel to Beaver Stadium. $10.00pp, round trip...very convenient. As it was a Friday, with a Penn State home game on Saturday, they stiff you on the room rate: $400+. We had a free room with an IHG credit card...so get the card, pay the yearly fee...it's worth it. My night at this Holiday Inn was pleasant. It's a clean hotel with 4 floors. Check-in/out was fast and easy. Reservations here include continental breakfast and free WiFi. The WiFi was great. None of the funny stuff hotels often like to pull like advertising free WiFi only to have it work slower than molasses. The hot breakfast could've been better. Eggs, sausage, bagels, yogurt, cereal and fresh fruit were among the few choices. My two complaints? 1) The shower. The showerhead in our room needed some CLR or to be completely replaced as it lacked pressure and seemed to be more of a drip than a stream of water. 2) Wish they had a mini fridge. I've gotta say though, the king sized bed was so comfortable. By far the best night sleep I've ever had in a foreign bed, perhaps even better than my own and I love my bed! The down comforter was soft and weighted without being too hot and the pillows (they provide two: firm and soft) was the perfect mix. Only a few minutes from Penn State and located in an area with plenty of places to eat and shop. If you ever find yourself looking for a place to stay while in State College, give this place some consideration. read more

This hotel was great. I needed a good night sleep and it delivered. The bed was super comfortable and the linens were top notch. Check-in was easy and fast. Check out was even faster. Breakfast choices provided a great variety. There are two reasons I didn't give it the 5th star: (1) They need to find something else to clean glass surfaces; there was a film on the mirrors and the shower door was obviously not cleaned. (2) The housekeeping crew came through LOUDLY at 8:30 a.m., knocking on every door, announcing, "Housekeeping." It was a little inconsiderate. Otherwise, I'd definitely stay there again and recommend it to everyone. read more

Stayed at the hotel this past weekend for a wedding I was attending in the State College area. The lobby is very nice and the free breakfast was awesome. I had sausage links, scrambled eggs, coffee and a warm cinnamon roll. The staff was courteous, professional and accommodating. Very good staff they have there. The reason for only 3 stars is that, like a previous poster, my room smelled musty and was in dire need of simple upkeep. There were tiles missing in the bathroom and black mold. Terrible! Original room smelled horribly of mildew with a chocking overlay of perfumed "deodorizer". Asked to be moved, second room only slightly better. Gave up as that was clearly the best they had to offer. Pull out bed had only one sheet-thin blanket that didn't even cover the width of the bed. I requested a standard comforter but was told there was none in the bldg. I asked how that could be and was told that only one per room was ordered during the "renovation" (which, based on the carpets, must have occurred in the 70s). I asked what happened when a comforter was damaged ( since they didn't have a single spare) and was told that they ordered a new one and closed the room until a new one came in - saavy business model - might be why they can't afford to clean the carpets. So why, if the parking lot was totally empty, couldn't they have pulled one from a vacant room? Oh yeah, and the wifi sucked thank god for my phone's hotspot capabilities. Close to Penn State with available game day shuttle enticed us to stay here while visiting from NY. Greeted with snacks in the afternoon (possibly only since game weekend?) which were great such as taco dip, pretzels with various dips and cupcakes ! Comfortable beds with four pillows on each bed made sleeping great. One downside was extremely low toilet with very high water level which was uncomfortable. Rest of room pretty standard with fridge and microwave. Breakfast was good with muffins, yummy cinnamon buns and eggs and sausage. Coffee not quite hot enough being in thermos dispensers sitting out. I travel a tremendous amount around the country and stay at many different types of hotels. I have stayed at many Holiday Inn Express locations and almost always find them above expectations. This location did not disappoint. First, an issue that can easily be corrected is the MapQuest location for this hotel is inaccurate as it takes you down the street. Management can easily fix this by pinning the MapQuest location to its front door. However, the hotel is very conveniently located and reasonably priced. The interior is decorated with a unique old world charm using dark finished wood and more Classic decorations that all really work well together. The common areas are clean and well kept. The rooms are reasonably sized and properly furnished with well thought out color schemes, materials, and furnishings. However, a small refrigerator sat alone on the floor next to the dresser and with no microwave. The refrigerator needs to be placed into an appropriate piece of furniture with a microwave on top. There is ample space within the room to accomplish this. The complimentary breakfast was okay and typical. The cinnamon rolls were a hit. The eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy - were all fine. The hotel does not have a restaurant, however it shares a parking area with a number of well known restaurants which is very convenient. A gas station is just across the street. Overall, this is a great Holiday Inn Express location that will have everything you need for a comfortable and affordable stay. read more

Stayed here for a wedding that was in Tyrone, PA. King size bed was comfortable. Pillows were great too. The room came with Showtime so that was cool to watch while recovering Sunday morning. Complimentary breakfast was a hot breakfast buffet -- scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, plus continental breakfast options. There is an Outback Steakhouse in the hotel parking lot and lots of shopping nearby -- walking distance from the hotel. Campus is two miles away. read more

This holiday inn express isn't the best. Of course it's run by college kids. The rooms aren't as nice, not having a mini fridge or microwave. They also only have stand up showers; no bath. It does have a nice lobby and the location is great. But overall I would stay at one of the near by competitors. read more

We pricelined the hotel. My husband and I (along with several other friends who were in different rooms) were up for a pre-commencement ceremony at PSU for a friend. Hotel is under renovation- but they were very upfront about it. Room was clean (the other rooms I saw were also very clean). Bed was comfy. Lobby was very nice. Plenty of parking. Staff was very friendly. Priceline had us defaulted into a smoking room - front desk staff asked if we wanted to change before we even got a chance. Breakfast was decent. The pancake fax machine (the thing really sounds like a fax machine it is odd) was the most amusing thing one member of our party had ever seen. There were plenty of dinning options in the little square where the hotel was if you wanted chain food for lunch/dinner. Was a safe area to walk around at night. Pretty close to PSU. read more

Our toilet didn't flush upon entering the room but even though it was after 11 pm, the front desk sent someone up and it was fixed in about 15 minutes. We came from out of state to visit family. Had no idea there was a concert in town to which they jacked our hotel rate up for that night to $199. That was after they knocked $100 off for us. The first morning we woke up to eat breakfast our three year old asked for milk so we got milk out of the fridge for her only to find out that it was solid curdled milk . That same day we came back to our hotel went to use the side door and before we could put our key in my oldest pulled the door open. Little things that didn't really bother us. Well the next day housekeeping came in to do their job and they moved a bunch of our things and went threw some of our personal belongings. And the thing that topped our horrible visit was my daughter waking up with gum in her hair from the headboard (she slept on the floor with her sister from Friday-Sunday) of the bed which had gum stuck to it! My kids don't chew gum and didn't get it from anyone we visited. We asked to talk to a manager to let him know what was going on. We were told he would call us on our cell phones which he never did he called the hotel room at 4am according to the phone. Which we were sleeping and the phone didn't ring. He said he would call back later which he never did. The night before we left we informed staff we would be leaving early and asked if the manager would be in before we left we were told that he would be in at 2pm the day of our departure but she would call his personal line and let him know. We called the hotel from the road at 2:30pm and were told he wasn't in the office and would be giving us a call Friday! The lady on the phone was very rude and snappy with us. He calls us today and basically says he's sorry he was busy until now and that he thinks that his staff did everything they were supposed to do for us and said that housekeeping moves stuff to clean which our stuff WAS NOT in their way at all for cleaning and he basically defended his staff for going threw my personal stuff. And accused me of lying about the gum found on the headboard About four years ago when we stayed we had an awesome experience with this hotel they gave us a flat rate of $99.00 a night and that was for a double queen room with a conference room attached to it. They were very nice. That is the reason we came back this time is because we had such a wonderful experience. However after this stay we will not be coming back again. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone and I hardly ever write reviews about anything. If you want rude staff, housecleaning that goes threw your personal belongings or steals things from your belongings, gum in your hair when you wake up, and a horrible manager that doesn't care how your stay went then by all means this is your place to go. If not I highly suggest going some where else! read more

I thought a Holiday Inn was a Holiday Inn. NOT! No bathtub for my three year old, just screamed through a shower. Supposedly they have no rooms with baths available-the parking lot is empty. No microwave. No fridge. See through curtains. Shower dirty. Wifi so slow it's not even worth it. Will be complaining to management and will not give any Holiday Inn my service anymore. read more

Left room at 11am came home at 10pm and room wasn't made up. Called down to front desk and told them. No apology just " are you sure you didn't leave the Do Not Disturb tag on your door?" When I asked them to make sure to make it up the next day he said " we can do that for you" as if he was doing me a favor. We were staying 5 nights. Every night we would get up to our room and our keys had been deactivated. When room was cleaned, pieces of paper were scattered all over the carpet as if they had fallen out of a vacuum cleaner. read more
