We were traveling for our sons AAU program and picked Toftrees resort as the location was very convenient. Unfortunately, when we arrived the rooms looked nothing like the pictures online. They are worn down, the hotel also has a pretty bad smell overall. I figured it was fine we were only here for 1 night. Well unfortunately around 5am the next morning, the fire alarms started to go off around the whole hotel. I waited a few minutes before going up to the front desk to see what was going on. The man at the front said he called engineering and they were supposed to be on their way. My son and I walked around the premise until they sorted out the alarms. At this point it's 6:30 AM. My son asked if he could look at the cup on the golf course since he had never seen one before. He must have been on the course for 3 minutes before walking back to the patio they have behind the resort. As he is approaching someone stops and yells "hey are you staying at the resort, you can't be on the golf course". He is 11 years old, and we would not have been outside in the first place if your hotel didn't have alarms going off at 5 in the morning. I would not recommend. 0/10 if I could rate that low. read more

We stayed there last night, and everything seemed fine. Nice room. At about 6:15 am, the next morning, I was awoken by the loudest sound. Literally sounded like construction above us. The front desk said it was likely a bathroom fan. Well, he was right! The bathroom fans (from other rooms) in this hotel are sooooo loud! You will not be able to go back to sleep! I think that's a very important tidbit when it comes to booking a place to stay overnight. read more

Stayed here this past week for one night. Building and rooms are really dated. Bed was comfy for the most part but sloped downward so you're head was lower than the rest of your body which was annoying. Bathroom was the worst - toilet rocked back and forth and was very low to the ground. The shower was super old and the floor felt like it was going to fall through. No microwave in the room. AC got cold but took a long while. Room actually did have a suitcase rack which was nice! Haven't seen one in so long. I did not go to the Field for any meals so I can't remark on that. Front desk staff was great, I left my key in the room and it was an easy ask to get a new key. Plenty of parking. read more

Time to demolish and rebuild! This place was old when I was a student and I'm old now, so that's saying something! Everything is dated. What is this, a 1950s Tahoe lodge that's falling apart? Oh and with the prices to match! It's so old, parts of the hotel are not ADA-friendly! Aren't there laws about not having elevator access? Great property, lots of potential, start the bidding!! One star because the staff are fantastic, for everything else - go get a room in a Penn State dorm! Only stay here is if absolutely necessary. Grounds are lovely as are the lounge/restaurant/banquet areas. The rooms are outdated which I could overlook but I could not get over the feeling of being in a funeral home. My deluxe room was in the basement and the set up in the common area was that of a funeral parlor with the matching smell. There was an eerie feeling, down to a wall outlet and an odd sound coming from the vents.I felt fairly uncomfortable and actually passed on a swim at the pool (which opens at 10!) to check out early. read more

Not what I was expecting. The check in process was quick and easy, which I appreciated. The front desk person was courteous. But the room left a lot to be desired. The decor was outdated. Stains on the armchair and the drapes. There was a patch of the bathtub that was scraped and needed maintenance or replacing. The caulk had come off the shower head and the bed was saggy. Obviously an older establishment which is fine. Was not clean. Pulled back sheets and the fitted sheet was clearly not changed. Dents where people slept, debris etc. We told the front desk and someone promptly came to the door with more bedding. Asked if we would like to change them ourselves or if we needed help. We opted to do it ourselves. Sheets smelled and looked clean after that. I know there is high demand for places to stay near Penn State but this was by far one of the grossest places I've seen. - The room was clean and adequate. Two double beds, dresser, desk, chair. There is a hidden refrigerator in the dresser. The bathroom was decent - plenty of towels and wash cloths. - Cable TV service did not work for 2 of the 3 days I stayed. - The WiFi signal was weak and frequently dropped. - The front desk did not answer their phone when I called from my room or when I called a few days after I checked out. - There was billing issue. I reserved and paid for the room through a travel agent. However Toftrees also charged my credit card when I checked out. They did not answer when I called about it. I am disputing the charge. - The provided clock radio was not plugged in and there was not an available outlet to pug it into. The provided USB charger does not accept USB-C cables. I'm glad I brought an adapter. - The facility is a little run down. -There is an outdoor pool which I did not use. -Their main attraction is a golf course but I did use it so can't comment. read more

First time staying at Penn State for a concert at Bryce Jordan Center. I booked this hotel so much in advance that I don't really remember why I picked it. Needless to say, it wasn't cheap. I really did expect more for my money here. Even water that is placed in the room strategically was not complimentary. It was pouring rain and dark on this particular day. We nearly passed up the side road the resort was on. We don't golf, so didn't really care about the fact that there's a big golf course here. Check-in was slow. There was a huge line and only one person working behind the desk. To top it off, after waiting on the line our key didn't work when we got to the room. So we had to go back down to the desk, cut the line and got a mean glare from a customer who was waiting. The room itself needs some serious updating. The bathroom looks old and 1950s style. It's also not very spacious, which isn't a huge deal but might be a turn off for some people. There is also a restaurant located on premise but we didn't visit it. Let's start off with this if you like old out dated rooms this hotel is for you. You must bring your own soap and toothpaste to this 3 star hotel. I was over charged because someone stated used my room number at breakfast. I was told I was charged 178. A night for the room and looked at my Chase account to see I was charged 199 a night. I called Harry the only hotel accountant to see if he could help and it was horrible. Harry informed me what was on my Chase account was wrong and I was charged a certain 178 a night when I was charged more. Harry began screaming so I matched his screaming with facts and he hung up on me. Very unprofessional, I wish I could get all my money back for the nasty way I was treated in this old nasty hotel!! Don't waste your money! Go to a hotel that treats you with respect, you have to bring your own soap this is your hotel!! Oh steal your money too! This place should be closed down! We had a really enjoyable stay. The rooms were clean. The beds were comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful. There was a fridge and a microwave in the rooms which made up for no breakfast on site. We ordered groceries to be delivered when we arrived. I recently attended Setsucon here at the Toftrees, an anime convention that for many years was hosted at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, but was forced to move due to various issues. When you first look into the Toftrees, the reviews are not great, and maps of the venue don't help. The good news is, this venue is better than I personally expected, but does have several flaws. The hotel and conference center are essentially two different buildings, split up by a somewhat narrow staircase with no elevator (I had no issue with it, but the lack of an elevator could affect others). The second floor is one continuous hallway, but the first floor is split by an outdoor walkway, and this could lead to confusion when walking around. Parking turned out to not be an issue with an adequate amount of spaces. My group had a suite on the conference center side of the building that was nice. The bed and pillows were quite comfortable with the suite having two full bathrooms, a nice convenience. Bathrooms had new shower heads but old switches, an odd feature. Suite also came with a table, microwave, mini refrigerator, and two TV's. Sound proofing was an issue with people walking loudly upstairs as it came through the ceiling easily. Toftrees has a fair amount of function space, but it is not large. Setsucon with 700 attendees was pushing the function space to the limits. All of the function space is located is located along the same hallway. The main ballroom can be divided into three smaller rooms. One issue was the speaker system needs to be replaced, as in one of the rooms it was no longer properly functioning, even with the help off the hotel's support staff. A bar/dining area was converted into function space for Setsucon that worked well enough. Several smaller breakout rooms are also available that are nicely decorated. The Field Burger and Tap is the hotels attached restaurant that is quite nice and the food is good. Overall, my experience as I mentioned earlier was better than expected. The venue is dated in many ways without question and updates/renovations are planned/in progress to both function and hotel space. If an aggressive owner came in here, they would build a new hotel/convention center that better utilizes the space they have available. Overall, this would not be my first choice to hold a function, but possibly second. read more

Stayed here last weekend for Setsucon, Penn State's Anime Club's Convention. I was a bit skeptical of the venue as I heard the hotel did not have an elevator (A huge let down for large cosplays) and saw some less than sparkling reviews. Our experience however was quite enjoyable. Hotel wise: Decent beds/space for a hotel and huge bathrooms. Probably some of the nicest bathrooms I've seen at a hotel. The staff were very helpful and courteous with our check in/out and through out our stay. While the hotel has aged a bit, they have kept up to date with fixtures/beds. Room decor could use an update but thats mostly cosmetic. I recommend the Field restaurant attached to the hotel. Nice place to eat if you don't want to leave the property. Convention Space Wise: Layout was very easy to navigate, and panel rooms were a nice size to interact with your audience. I ran an early morning panel and quite liked the size of the room. Hallways are not very costume or crowd friendly as they're pretty narrow. Saw one cosplayer get stuck several times due to her wings. For larger panels, the lines ran through the hallways and back to almost where the restaurant was. Not a huge problem but again the narrow hallways didn't leave much room for error here.Theres also an odd seating area between the con and hotel that the "con funk" tended to hang around in, especially around meal times. I'd steer clear if possible and exit from the hotel side and re-enter a few feet away at the convention side to avoid this. Overall its a nice venue and hotel for a small event or get away from the hustle of downtown State College. read more

My company recently held an event here and I have to say, out of all the years we've been doing this meeting, this was the nicest one we've had and the most enjoyed by the attendees. The food was great and set up on time per my agenda. Everything was absolutely delicious from the Hors d'oeuvres to the desert. We absolutely look forward to coming back here in future years for this meeting and I definitely plan to make time to stop over at the resorts restaurant for a milkshake before I leave! read more

This place was fine, was here for a wedding. The surrounding area and scenery is beautiful. The hotel itself is nice but definitely dated. When checking in, we witnessed a somewhat hostile interaction between a customer who was a little irrational and the front desk employee who was pretty snarky with him. It kind of set things off on a weird note. Our hotel room was fine, nothing special though clean. The bathroom was pretty big. Our shower was awful, it was hard to adjust the settings on it. The attached restaurant ("The Field") came in pretty handy for us, food was good there. Price for a night was comparable to similar place. Overall, a decent place to stay. read more

I get it that they have a right to charge you $500 a night for a $100 room. But silverfish in the bathroom? A toilet that was not securely bolted down so it rocked when you sat on it? Room service breakfast that comes in a cardboard box (with no liner by the way) even though they ask in advance if you want it to go or for the room? A restaurant that closes at 10p and refuses to seat 2 guests at 9:10 because they're not sure they can serve us in time? This was per the young hostess, who was not very friendly this 10/27 Saturday night. We did find seats at the bar and ate there. But the hotel did have some good employees who really did care. The young lady at the front desk on Friday at 1-2p and again Saturday morning was awesome. This is a very dated hotel that has done little over the years to upgrade. This place is a sub-par, tired hotel in dire need of a makeover and/or serious overhaul. Lovely, quiet and calm area, but an entirely disappointing and dated hotel. The grounds and the lobby, though nicely kept and clean can't hide the fact that this hotel is long past its prime and stinks of budget. This is no resort, my friend. One does not come here for an escape or to relax. Toftrees hotel has three floors, and no elevator to speak of. If you're not on the first floor, you have to haul your belongings up a flight or two of stairs. Entirely unacceptable. The hallways reek of cologne or some type of heavy air deodorizer (which was so strong and heavy and very off-putting, what are you trying to cover up?) The whole place and interior is very dated, and the decor, especially the bathrooms are extremely budget and strange. Clearly rehabbed on a budget. Our room on the 3rd floor, had a large bleach suspect stain directly outside the door to our room. Bizarre design elements - rooms on the third floor offered their only closet to be located inside the bathrooms, which was a very bizarre design element; no luggage space, and virtually no space to hang towels, dated big box televisions also are always a tell-tale sign that the hotel needs a makeover. This place does not make sense. Period. No wifi to speak of, but hey there's one desktop for your pleasure in the lobby! On-site restaurant was also very sub-par and the breakfast buffet (even with an omelet station) - was, at the risk of sounding juvenile, ick. If you stay here, skip this place and head to American Ale house just down the street for your eating pleasure. Also, an interior decor lesson to all - never, ever tile an interior room, specifically, bathrooms with large square shiny BLACK tile. It's mental hospital meets dive bar bathroom. Awful and scary. This should be your last option if all other hotels are booked (especially on a game weekend). read more

Extremely disappointing stay. Did not have an elevator, had to carry luggage up flight of stairs (good thing I'm not handicapped??!) Room did not have automatic temperature regulating sensors. Therefore, we had to continually adjust the heat/cold setting. Toilet was actually not secured to the floor! No continental breakfast - although there was a restaurant on site. No in-room refrigerator. No luggage rack in room. Extremely small rooms. A great deal was missing for the high priced rate we paid. read more

The other reviews are right. It is a very outdated place and I mean the lack of stairs was not a big deal but I can see why that makes the hotel undesirable. We stayed for only one night and like any other mid level hotels, the carpets are dark and in a crazy pattern, the bathrooms are some what clean and the dark lighting in the hallways are familiar as other hotels. The price was so so for the area and the parking in the back was close enough. I had my service dog with me and they had no problems which I loved. I requested a room away from the crowds as my dog may bark and on the lower floor. They listened and I got a room as I wanted. It was not bad for one night but it wasn't great. I will definitely have to try other hotels before I can sleep here again read more

I have to agree with the majority regarding the Toftrees Golf Resort & Conference Center. It's outdated by the hotel staff is friendly. My husband and I were up in State College for the night and wanted to find an inexpensive but clean hotel. Since we weren't looking for fancy, modern amenities, the Toftrees did the trick. Please note that our visit was during a non-football weekend. I'm sure it's much, much more expensive when there's a game. The room wasn't huge but we also spent very little time there. The shower was surprisingly great. It was really easy to operate and the water pressure was perfect. The bathroom floor could have been swept a little better before our arrival, but I also wasn't hanging out underneath the sink. The hotel was conveniently located near a bus stop that made getting downtown really simple. They also came to our rescue with a mini sample of toothpaste when we realized it was 2am and we had none. We booked through AAA and the front desk staff had a little trouble finding our reservation (cue panic attack) but everything ended up working out. I'd recommend the Toftrees for a non-frills overnight stay in State College. read more

This is one oddball property. Although the hotel, the golf course and the catering facility all occupy the same space... they are three distinct entities. As a guest of the hotel I felt like I was intruding into the other two worlds. The way the building is set into the hillside makes for a bizarre layout. There are a lot of narrow hallways with low ceilings. To get to "the gym" you have to walk through the room where wedding receptions are going on! Everything is very dated and starting to show its age. The negatives aside... The staff is very friendly, everything is very clean although there is a lingering fruity disinfectant smell wafting through the hallways and the rates are reasonable. I wouldn't want to have my kids weddings here... but for a quick overnight to visit my son at PSU... it was just what the doctor ordered. For bargain rates this place is aces... if you are paying full price... not so much! read more

The hotel staff was very friendly. We called ahead to ask about taxis and transportation, the young lady had information ready for us when we got in, which was late. We stayed on the first floor. I did not see an elevator, but I live on a third floor and take stairs on a daily basis. Stairs and not having an elevator does not bother me. The bathroom was a nice size and it did have handicap handle in the shower. The hallways were also wide. There are plenty of vending machines and working ice machines. They had two bottles of water and bag of Ascher chocolate waiting for us in the room-that was a nice personal touch :-) The temperature settings in the room were easy user friendly and it quickly warmed up. The breakfast buffet was nice and easily accessible. The selection included: fresh fruit (really good), yogurt, cereal, corned beef hash, sausage, bacon, French toast, eggs, and toast. The servers who brought us beverages during the breakfast were also very nice. The grounds of the hotel seemed really nice and were very well maintained. I wish it was warmer weather to explore and take advantage of the volleyball pits and golf course. I would come back and stay here. read more

I am currently staying here for an industry conference and am not impressed thus far. I have one more day to go and what just happened on the phone ordering room service at 7:30 am, compelled me to write this. But, lets start from the beginning. I will say the grounds are lovely. Driving through the property, you can tell they take care of this and do it well. The guest check in is a little odd. It's off to the corner and if you have more than one bag you are screwed, as it has two manual-quick-to-close doors. The rooms. Ugh, I hate saying this but I actually posted photos on Facebook joking about expecting Don Johnson and the other guy from Miami Vice in my bathroom. The floor was dirty, and everything seemed yellow. The bed room was ok, except here's the kicker.... The doors open out. So I have to do a peekaboo check for fear of opening in to oncoming traffic. Also this doesn't make me feel so safe. Now on to why I'm really not too pleased. I awoke this morning early enough to enjoy breakfast and some extra work (7:30 ish), only to be told by the gentleman on the other line that they were short staffed and that I would have to come pick my breakfast up. This was the second time I have called for room service only to be disappointed. First time, was two days prior at 10:30 am when I was told they don't serve anything till 11:30. What?? So this is why I'm giving an average review. I travel each week for work and am not a picky person. But there are some things that one should expect if you call yourself a "resort". Clean updated rooms and the staff and ability for room service, or don't offer it. read more

I love Penn State but sometime need to stay away from all of and Toftrees is perfect. I am happy to have that mini refrigerator and the balcony/porch. It is super convenient to have The Fields just a walk down the hallway. If you are going to eat here, check out the weekly burger and fries special. I need to figure out a time to try the Caramel covered fries during this visit. Update: the walls between the room are thin. Unfortunately I could hear my neighbors talking. read more

Brides-to-be, watch out. I had planned to have my wedding here this fall. Due to an unforeseen and devastating circumstance, I had to cancel it, but I did so with plenty of notice (almost 3 full months). The contract showed what seemed to be a clear fee schedule with a declining percentage of refund as the days got closer to the event, and as I was within the 61-90 day period, I was prepared for them to keep 30% of my deposit. However when I actually emailed them, I was informed that they would be keeping my ENTIRE deposit because the 30% was based on "estimates" about food, alcohol, and rooms. Keep in mind, I hadn't even mailed out my invitations yet, and the final guest count and meal choices weren't due until 3 weeks before the wedding, so there is no way they could have even had a rough estimate of how many people would have attended. Also, if they had listed the estimated totals in the contract, it would almost be understandable, but they didn't. The only numbers in the contract at all were three equal deposits, two of which I'd already paid. Very, very misleading. To the management, if you plan on keeping the entire deposit regardless of when an event is cancelled, just say so in the contract. Don't put in a cancellation schedule if the percentages have no bearing whatsoever on the money actually paid up to that point. Plan your wedding elsewhere, folks. Trust me when I say it's not fun to have to deal with an incredibly upsetting circumstance that forced me to cancel the wedding AND know that I lost all of my money with absolutely nothing to show for it. read more

2.5 Stars. There's not a whole lot to say after attending a PSU organization brunch reception here recently. The food was standard buffet, with the made-to-order ham, cheese and mushroom omelet the highlight of my meal. The dessert table was impressive though. Service was decent with consistent refills of coffee and water. But cramming 11 people at our round table made for tight dining and up close and personal conversations during the meal. read more

We came here for a wedding reception. I would have to give the food 2 stars. It wasn't anything more than banquet food. The reception had about 200 guests and the inside seating was way too small. The outside patio was beautiful but a bit too small for 200 people at a cocktail hour. read more

I stayed here in the spring for a work conference. The room was a good size with a nice balcony/fridge/microwave. I enjoyed the burger and chicken sandwhich at the restaurant and the proximity to town was great. It also has a beautiful setting and golf course. read more

We stayed here for a couple of nights while visiting our son at PSU. I was a little worried after reading the Yelp ratings and reviews but there were few rooms to be had in the area and so we went ahead and booked a room at Toftrees. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised! From the start, the front desk staff was amazingly friendly and happy to help us; I rarely see this level of warm customer services. BIG shoutout to their staff!!! The room may a bit "tired" but it was absolutely comfortable, clean, and quiet. I would not hesitate recommending this hotel and I would definitely stay at Toftrees again while in the area. read more
