That led us to consider other options. After a friend posted about Friendship Trees on Instagram and we saw it's just 30 minutes from Capital Hill, we had to go. Friendship Trees and Christmas Shop is a smaller farm, but that means less people competing for trees. It's close to the shore just 30 minutes from Capital Hill in Washington, DC. Unlike other farms, it's a set price ($50) for any tree you cut down yourself regardless of height. If you want to pay for the best trees, they already cut those down and sell them for between $75-$100. We found one of their only big trees and after bailing, we paid $63. They tie up the tree for you and attach it to your car. This farm also has a small Christmas shop with decorations, candles, chairs, etc. In the back, there is a farm house style public restroom and a snack bar selling $1 Swiss Miss hot chocolate.

On my most recent visit last weekend my husband and I visited their beer garden. I have had this on my agenda for quite some time and finally found the perfect weekend to go. For some reason I always pictured in my head the beer garden being a big white tent with some picnic benches inside. Well I was clearly wrong. The beer garden was so much larger and nicer than I expected. They have a ton of outdoor seating, a stage for live music, a bar to get your beverages and multiple food trucks that sometimes rotate each weekend. There were shaded seats and seats that get plenty of sun and it is all dog friendly! My husband and I each had two beers and some snacks from the food trucks. We will definitely be back, we just wish this was closer to home for us!

I always had real Christmas trees growing up, but I had never bought one as an adult. Nevertheless, Almost Heavenly Trees & Greenery made the process way easier than I could have expected, and for the first time, like ever in my life, we left the tree lot with the first tree we looked at. This is a fantastic 'mom and pop' tree farm operation and the young man, forgive me that I have forgotten his name, was super fantastic! He spent 20 minutes with us making sure we had the exact tree we wanted, and even helped up strap it to the roof of our car for the trip home. I feel really bad that I've forgotten his name because he was so personable. Not once did I feel like he was rushing us even though the lot was busy. And the trees are spectacular. It didn't look like much when we arrived because it is just trees in a lot, but they are quite fresh. The trees (douglas firs) from the family farm in WV were cut about a week before being sold. We ended up with a frasier fir (personal favorite) which came from a farm in NC but we were told they were about as fresh but they just couldn't confirm the day they had actually been cut. The prices were very reasonable, especially for being a local business and not a 'big box' store. We were just so impressed and are so very happy with our lovely tree that we are definitely life-long customers as long as we are within reasonable driving distance! They last all of December, always get it the day after thanksgiving and keep it up until New Year's Day. This year our tree fell over after being up for two weeks. It didn't feel secure and I called to get some advice and spoke with Matt who explained it was likely our tree stand (which it was) and offered to have someone come to our home to install our tree in a new tree stand the following day. As promised, Sam came with the new tree stand and put our tree in it the following day. They went above and beyond and followed through on everything they said they would. We will continue to get our trees from almost heavenly for as long as we live in this area and I have already told many people about this company so you should be expecting some new customers! A typical week includes two types of fruit, some sort of leafy green (salad greens in spring, kale and such later on), some sort of potatoes, an additional veggie (like peppers, onions, and/or eggplant), a loaf of bread and a dozen eggs. My girlfriend and I take one share, designed for a family of four, and we eat well all summer and fall and are able to save a significant amount for winter. They're usually open every Saturday with extra foods and meats for sale. Lastly, even though this is a family operation, they are always quick to credit their "workshares" - members who work picking and/or packing produce in exchange for reduced rates on their CSA. A local business worth supporting.
