I teach out of Hollywood Dance Center and I have to say it is one of the last standing original Dance Studios in Los Angeles. It's a great old school dance studio vibe and just feels like home. I'm proud to call it my home base and Pam is so amazing. Anyone who might give this place a bad review is coming for the wrong reasons anyway. The Facility: Two studios are on the 2nd floor. The stairs are quite steep. Masks are required in the common area. The dance studios are a little bit outdated. I've been taking ballet classes as an adult beginner with Elspeth Kuang and she is a wonderful instructor. Patient but pushes you to learn, and makes sure to correct students along the way (which is a rarity for adult classes). I would give her ten stars if I could. I've seen my technique improve after each class. Haven't explored the facility much otherwise, but street parking is free after 7pm. If you are looking for evening classes to stay in shape, this is the spot. Note that you will book with/pay the instructor and not the facility, so check their website and get in touch with your teacher before coming to the first class! read more

This is such a great place to hire! The ladies here Pam and Miranda are so welcoming and make It feel like family. The studios are HUGE! and a great price for the space. I bring my own disco lights and turn off the fluro ones. They also have multiple lighting choices here and you can just use the chandeliers for more ambiance. Peak times are generally booked by long term hirers but its the best place in West Hollywood to rent for privates which I can book daytimes. They have 2 large studios upstairs. They run a lot of different classes here, from a lot of different teachers, so it's hard to review the place itself. This review is just for Elspeth and her ballet classes. She's amazing! First of all, let's start with the price. You get over 2 hours of ballet, including pointe if you're doing that, for $20. That's far more than you get at most studios. Plus, you get so much more for your money. Her classes are small so she really gives individual attention. That's INVALUABLE. After my first class with her, I already saw improvement in my arabesque. She does take a little while to come up with the exercises, but that gives your muscles a second to decompress lol. read more

I don't write a lot of reviews these days, but Miss Pam's ballet class has been a wonderful outlet for both dance and discipline for our 7 year old. Just gentle, caring (but firm when necessary!) instruction from Miss Pam and her assistant teachers, super reasonable tuition, reasonable requirements for gear and dancewear, and none of that hypercompetitiveness and commerciality of so many other dance schools. I really believe in how Miss Pam runs her dance school, and I'm grateful that my child is able to participate. read more

I really love 9am adult ballet with James Joyce at this dance center. I would say he typically teaches at an intermediate level. Regardless, it's open level, so all are welcome. He is always incorporating new, interesting combinations into his barre work and center, which keeps me on my toes. You pay him directly, not the studio, so bring cash or check. Another thing I love about this class is how BIG the room is and how there is SO much barre to choose from! It's also a smaller class because of the time of day, so if you can make it, you'll tend to get more individual attention. read more

I come here for Zumba classes-- the studio is pretty good. Lots of space, clean, filtered cold water for free, waiting area, and attentive staff. Friday Zumba at 7:15 with Jeffrey- AMAZING! I love his energy, and it's a great workout. His songs are always easy to follow and fun! I usually get very sore by the next day, always in a different body part. He does a good job of rotating workouts and such. He's just great! I would recommend this class to both beginners and people who want more of a challenge. I made the mistake of taking the Thursday night class with Michael (was that his name?) I HATED it. I didn't need to drink water the entire time. It was unchallenging and boring. And he's one of those dancers who will do ridiculously difficult moves in between that only he can follow (like little dumb twists and twirls that stroke his ego but make everyone else loop around confused. My ankle was hurting so I sat down towards the end, i didn't miss much though. Never again! Fridays with Jeffrey is where it's at! read more

I like how this feels like an old dance studio from the 1960s or 1970s... or like an old studio with character from every dance movie you've ever seen. Everything about it is perfect, old style. You have to climb a very steep set of stairs to reach the studio, though. It feels like you're climbing to Dance Heaven. One strange thing about this place is the panel mirrors in the main studio -- certain mirrors are more slimming than others, LOL!!! I like to dance primarily in the ones that make me look thinner. It's like, "Man, I'm lookin' hot today," *smile. So far I've only taken Carrie's "Salsa Fit" class, which I LOVE. I just started. The people are very nice and welcoming. HOTTEST SALSA WORKOUT IN HOLLYWOOD I've been taking Carrie's Salsa Fit class for three years now and I love it. She plays a great variety of Latin music like salsa, merengue, samba, reggaeton, cha cha cha and others. Dancing to Latin music will keep you in shape because it is good for your heart. Carrie brings energy on the dance floor. The ballroom has enough space for everybody. If you are stuck on a dance move that you seem to have trouble, just fake 'n' shake. I HAVE TWO WORDS FOR THIS CLASS, GREAT WORKOUT! I've been trying to find an excercise class on Sunday that is upbeat and that also keeps my interest. Carrie's class hits the spot. I like this class because the excercising doesn't feel like excercise. The music in this class has a beat and keeps me dancing. When I go to Carrie's class, I bring my mom with me. I've passed by Hollywood Dance Center many times as I was driving and finally looked online. I found Elspeth Kuang on the website and got brave enough to check out her Monday night class. SOOO good! Elsbeth is super encouraging and really takes the time to explain things without making you feel like you're a lost cause. (I may be one, not sure yet... But at least I'm having fun!) I can't say how happy I am to have found the Zumba class. Michael is a doll, the class was EXACTLY what I have been looking for. As another person said, all shapes, ages and sizes, not a typical Hollywood scene at all. As a 52 years young, still Broadway dancer in my heart, this school, and this class is perfect for me. Being new to ballet....Elspeth Kuang's class is the perfect intro back into ballet (I did it very briefly as a child but have always loved it!) The class has mixed beginners level but what makes it is how nurturing, patient and informative Elspeth is! There are no egos and the class is a great workout. Just an update to let you ZUMBA addicts know that before zumba there was CARRIE PLESCIA! All "Zumba" is is a trademarked name for Latin Cardio, so get the REAL THING right here. Look, in the "aughts," everybody and their mother was a yoga teacher. Now in the 'teens, everybody and their dog is a "zumba" teacher. So you can dance a little and you pay your $200 and get zumba certified...so NOT! Carrie not only was a former salsa champion, she's been a professional teacher for a very long time. She can CUE; her taste in music is HOT (we're always begging her, "Where did you find that? What's the name of that? Who is that?"); her routines are simple and repetitive enough so you get a broad opportunity to DANCE your arse off, yet choreography involved enough to engage your mind and memory. Give it one shot (FIRST CLASS FREE POLICY -- what do you have to lose?) and see for yourself. I dare you! Okay, I'm a fan. I haven't missed a Sunday in over 3 years. I'm busy and cantankerous and demanding. My buddies laff at me because I've scoped out EVERY Latin/Zumba class in town and I KNOW the pantheon of top teachers and I'm TELLING YOU, Carrie is one of the greats. When I tell you and tell you and tell you this is the real deal, I know whereof I speak! Wear aerobics shoes, bring a towel and water bottle (there's a cooler in the lobby -- free refill, if you need it), and wear aerobics clothes. The ballroom has awesome A/C AND ceiling fans AND four (two operable) "floor" fans mounted on the ceiling corners. You will be totally comfortable even in 100+° heat. Our dance troupe has held classes and rented studios here for rehearsals. The rates are very reasonable and rooms are a great size. If you come on weekends or Sundays there is ample street parking, which is a real plus. The facilities could probably use a bit of updating (hence 4 stars instead of 5), but it's a solid space and I'd recommend it. read more
