They are not a scared-straight organization; they take good kids and enhance what values already exist inside. The Drills are normally exciting and always encourage the kids to be physically, morally, and spiritually fit. My daughter always comes back home very mentally energetic, though physically worn out, and it's amazing to see her interact with the rest of the family. They are not a recruiting tool; one of their main goals is to keep kids off drugs and instill the moral courage to stand up for what is right. There are obviously military aspects to the program. They all have to graduate a boot camp to become a Young Marine. There are current and former Marines serving as Registered Adult Leaders. The kids march and perform physical activities one might see in the military. But most of those items are a ton of fun for the kids and the Drills present opportunities to the kids to do things they might never do before. I've witnessed quiet kids blossom into leaders. Kids are positively encouraged to succeed within the program and in life. Drug awareness is present throughout, as is CPR training. Assistance with school is encouraged, particularly with those older kids mentoring the younger ones. Trips to locations to build cohesion are prevalent as well. This past weekend, the kids completed the obstacle course as teams. There is an upcoming trip to visit the Lexington. If you have the ability to get involved in this program, I'll recommend it!
