I live in Arlington and we have two cats that were rescued, spayed, vaccinated and became part of our family for 15 years. All benefitted from our lives together. Since the dramatic recent loss of our cat from lymphoma, we thought it best to bring a new similar breed, American short haired -Bombay black cat to bring new energy into the sadness from a tragic loss. What we got from Jill G. was not an application but an inquisition. Questions like "what specific brands do you currently feed your cats" I guess that's important? We use Redford dry food - Not the right answer - Home Alone is supported by a large pet food corporation. Second concerning question, "give the vets name, clinic name, phone, date of last visit" "Who do plan to use in the future?" We answered the cats are spayed and vaccinated and seen when not feeling well. Wrong, Home Alone is interested in "regular wellness" visits. Before I give Jill G a proper shout out . I'd like to firmly say that this one star is actually a 5x0. From the first point of contact she was disgustingly rude and dismissive . When she asked what cat I was inquiring about she put a few question marks as if I was irritating her. Call me silly , but this was kind of a bright red flag that I may have been dealing with a contemptuous narcissist. I overlooked it because I was throughly interested in Heath-Cuddler. Jills communication skills are lacking. I never write reviews, but the experience I went through with her warranted it. We reached out at the end of Oct 2021 to inquire about a cat we wanted to adopt. Jill initially responded quickly, sent an application and did a phone screening. When it came time to pin down a date, we couldn't, because she said her house wasn't in a condition for us to be able to see Hershey in a comfortable state. Whatever that means. We went back and forth, still couldn't pin down a time and I offered to have her send me ANY times that work for her and we'll be there. The cat then got ringworm, which we didn't find out about until Jill stopped responding for a week. She told me it could be 6 weeks to complete the treatment. That is completely understandable! I know she has a lot going on. My issue here is that we never once got an update from Jill. I had to reach out every time. There was never a set time frame or date for the next time we can visit. The whole experience ended in Jill cancelling our visit that we finally set up, because she was exposed to Covid. I offered to come just myself, because I had Covid 2 weeks ago and I'm out of the quarantine period, per CDC guidelines, after 10 full days of quarantine after symptom onset, I can leave the house. She sent me a snarky email telling me i should have told her I had Covid, even though I'm no longer symptomatic and out of my quarantine period. She was not comfortable with this and also said she couldn't do a virtual visit because she didn't have a smart phone or iPad.... I got the sense early on that I was just not going to get this cat, even though we are the perfect candidates. It's just really upsetting that someone's personality and poor communication is getting in the way of kittens getting adopted before they grow up and get into an age where less people may want to adopt them. Jill ghosted me after I told her my last cat was an indoor/outdoor cat and was run over by a car (he was half-feral and not adopted through a shelter). I absolutely recommend this rescue! Jill was fabulous to work with. I inquired about our cat on pet finder, and got an email within a day to fill out an application. As a first time pet owner, I didn't really know a lot about what it meant to have a cat. Luckily for me, Jill was patient and gave me great advice throughout the process and most importantly took the time to explain things to me (how to prep my home, different feeding schedules, etc). I couldn't be more grateful. The length of the process was as expected, and overall seamless. It's clear that Jill and this rescue are passionate about finding the "perfect match" which is absolutely crucial to make sure both the cat and the human involved are happy. Adopting a cat is a large commitment and there are processes that are put in place in order to make sure it's a great fit and this rescue does just that. I contacted the organization about a young cat asking whether he would be good with other cats, dogs, and young children. Jill responded "Thanks for your interest in adoption. ______ is still available but needs another young, active feline in his forever home. He would be not be well suited as a "single"..." I've raised, fostered, and cared for puppies, adult dogs, senior dogs, kittens, adult cats, and senior cats for 35 years. She would turn down a perfectly good home for a cat and rather keep it until someone possibly adopts him with another cat. Like many other reviews here, I would have given it a no star if possible. Firstly, the adoption questionnaire was unnecessarily intrusive. Secondly, the replies we've got from Jill were filled with attitudes and made us feel like we were being looked down upon. Jill came up with a bunch of excuses why we won't be good enough to adopt a cat from the rescue, one of the reasons was our cat is too old. We have a 9yr cat who is extremely healthy, active, still acts like youngster and has been with much younger cats/kittens. The cat we were trying to adopt is 2 yr. This whole process took about 3 weeks for her to denied us based on pure assumptions and the fact that our cat is "too old". We have never even met Jill or the cat. I grew up with cats and have been around them my whole life. I've hand delivered kittens, adopted strayed cats and volunteered at shelters but still I don't fit their "perfect" criteria. I knew from the beginning that Jill wasn't going to give us the cat but I stuck around to see what she'll say. My advise, don't waste your time and energy with this rescue...or any other so called private rescues. In my experience they are all pretty much the same. I understand that you have to find the cat a good home but this is just way too much. Do yourself a favour go to your local animal shelter. The staff seriously need to work on their people skill or consider a career change. Very negative experience all the way around. Jill G. is very dismissive in her attitude. We were the first adopters to visit a pair of cats and were told that we didn't respond quickly enough to accept the adoption -- although we were told we had until the next day to decide. Offered the cats to another adopter -- and then didn't tell us for another week and a half. We just weren't good enough apparently (nevermind that I have worked as both a pet sitter, vet tech and raised 3 separate cat litters). If you want to experience a lot of difficulty in adopting, feel that you are an inadequate pet owner and waste your time -- by all means use this rescue group. I'd give them 0 rating if I could. Thank you to Jill and her amazing team of foster families! HAFR takes on these tiny orphans who might otherwise face a high kill shelter. These kitties never spend any time in a cage. They are transferred to loving and skilled foster parents that nurture these babies with bottles, butt wipes, doctor visits, medications, and nutritious food. But most importantly they are raised in a loving family with other kitties and tons & tons of TLC. When the kitties are ready to be adopted they are brimming with health and immensely socialized making them a perfect pet for their furever family! Jill and the foster parents may be a little thorough in vetting potential adopters. But they are emotionally invested for life in all of their cats and want to make sure that they are matched with just the right family. She sent the adoption application when I requested it and I was approved in about a week after submitting the application. After a visit to the foster home, she give you 24 hours to decide if you'd still like to adopt. If you decide you would, she will arrange to have your cat(s) taken to you or you can go pick them up from the foster home. Thanks to her, I adopted two kittens. My wife and I have been cat lovers whole lives (both grew up in cat-loving households). We were recently married and are trying to adopt kittens. We saw two adorable sibling kittens currently advertised for adoption by this agency. My wife fell in love and we applied to adopt from HAFR immediately. We both had high hopes, after all we're cat-lovers, we live in a good, safe house, no children, etc. I figured we'd be the perfect applicants. Unfortunately our application was denied simply because we would not commit to keeping the cats inside for their entire lives. (Which anyway strikes me as tantamount to animal cruelty: they're pets, not prisoners for crying out loud!) Our neighborhood could not be safer. It's a townhouse community where no one drives more than 5 mph due to the excess of speedbumps. I grew up with indoor/outdoor cats all my life in a similarly safe neighborhood; they all lived to ripe old age. I wanted to adopt a cat who caught my attention and told my family and everyone about that one cat. My application was normal, didn't have any pets and was willing to do anything for the cat. I contacted another organization for a backup cat just in case and they were way more professional and cheaper but I still only wanted my first choice. This is an email I I sent To Siamese Rescue Center that captures my experience. This organization is to be avoided at all costs. Read the reviews and see the common thread! I have been an avid supporter of Siamese Rescue for years. During the last few years, when relatives have died, we have requested that donations be made in their honor to Siamese Rescue. So I am not some stranger off the street, so to speak. I want to bring something to your attention that has me seriously concerned and more than a little angry. The other day, Siamese Rescue distributed an email giving details about cats that were up for adoption through Hone Alone Feline Rescue. While I know that Siamese Rescue does not endorse in any way organizations mentioned in such emails, I feel that this one you need to avoid at all costs. I am going to condense my experience without omitting any important details. Our beloved Siamese girl Stella passed away recently. We have room in our hearts and home for another Siamese kitty and when we received the email from Siamese Rescue, we thought that one of the cats at Hone Alone Feline Rescue might be one we could give a forever home to. We wanted to go visit the cat, Calypso, and see if we meshed. I contacted Hone Alone Feline Rescue (although we were out of town at a family function, rescuing homeless cats is important to us and I did all this in the midst of other responsibilities). I completed the application, corresponded with "Jill G" to make sure everything was received and was awaiting a date for us to meet Calypso. Instead, I received the following message: Thank you for submitting an application. I spoke to Calypso's foster mom about your interest and she feels that Calypso needs another young feline companion. Calypso is not only an affectionate lapsitter but really enjoys playing with the two cat in her foster home; we don't believe a senior cat will satisfy that need. Any chance you'd consider adopting a pair? Jill Home Alone Feline Rescue I have several issues with this but will stick to two. First, did this organization share our personal information (the application required lots of personal information), with the "foster mom?" We did not submit an application for her to consider; we submitted an application for Home Alone Feline Rescue to consider. Second, is this a ploy to adopt out more cats to pad their statistics and to fund-raise off of? Where is the interest in the cat's welfare in all this? Mark and I have been blessed with many wonderful cats over the last 32 years. All have been rescues. We have found homes for 70 cats on our own; cats who have been abandoned or born in our front yard. We spay or neuter, get their shots, and have a complete check-up done, all at our own expense, before finding a suitable home. We ALWAYS have the best interest in the cats foremost in our hearts and minds. I have no doubt that a young cat (Calypso is 2 years old) requires attention and stimulation. If I had any doubt that we would not provide a suitable home, I would not have pursued this in the first place. I have posted my experience on facebook and other media sites and have been contacted by several people who have had similar experiences with this organization. All of them said that they would never deal with Home Alone Feline Rescue again and that they feel the organization is a "bunch of women on a power trip" -- their words, not mine. I sent in my application, had the screening interview and was good to meet my potential kitty. Suddenly no one responds to my emails trying to solidify to a time and place. Not the place to go if you have children and are looking for a cat. In the course of two weeks, she came up with reason after reason not to pursue any of the felines that she either suggested or about which I inquired. After bringing the kids to meet two that she had recommended as being best friends and great for little ones, she informed us that only one kitten was there (the other was no longer okay with kids or friends with the cat anymore, apparently), and then started to steer us in another direction, entirely. But the kids connected with the original cat, who was all about them. I told her that day we wanted the kitten, and was asked to have the landlord confirm that animals would be permitted in my house. I did so within 24 hours, only to be rejected by Jill with the reason that the cat would surely run away when my children open the door. I would have appreciated her being upfront during this process. If you have kids, follow her own advice and pursue a different rescue group to find the "purr-fect match for your family". Jill is an age discriminator. In all aspects. I have been looking for a perfect temperament for my cat and my family for a very long time. When I got to the cat adoption in Capitol Hill, I almost immediately knew she wasn't going to let me adopt the cat. She looked down at me and made me feel extremely insecure, even though I have a lot of experience with cats of all ages, including kittens much younger than the one I wanted to adopt. The moment she repeated with a slight attitude you live in an apt with your boyfriend? (I have been with said boyfriend in that apt for. 10 years) I knew she wasn't going to let me adopt. Once I applied she said my cat was too old for a kitten as a companion. I asked for her to reconsider, and she told me is proceeding with other applicants. read more

This is a really serious 1 star review, because it has to do with living beings who are not being handled well by Jill. It's concerning. While looking for a new cat, we saw ads from Home Alone saying to consider fostering. I thought this wss a great idea because I haven't ever had a cat and wanted to know that this was a 100% fit. Jill wrote back promptly and said we would be a good fit for fostering. On Monday she wrote to me saying she had two cats for us (and pictures) and she would like to bring them Saturday at 12 noon. I said no, that we had out of town guests, but we would be back at 6pm. She said OK I'll write back when I figure out what to do with them in between 12 and 6. She never did. On Friday night I emailed asking what was going on. She said she had placed them somewhere else. We had gotten them toys food liter treats ect. Ect. They would have had a loving comfortable home. I'm heartbroken. Jill isn't kind or professional. I can't possibly give Home Alone a lower rating. It's terrible how she treats the community and the cats. read more

I was fostering to adopt a kitten, Chloe, from Alley Cat Allies in early August. A couple weeks after, Chloe came home, I realize that Chloe needed someone her age to play with, with the hope that she would leave my old lady, a 13 year old Himalayan (Cailey), alone. I saw Snow on Petfinder. Like most animal rescue organizations, I had to fill out an application before I could meet Snow. Jill was very responsive, and she provided all the information she has on Snow. She informed me of the next adoption event where Snow will be attending so that I could meet Snow. Because I don't feel comfortable venturing into certain unfamiliar areas of D.C., Jill tried adjusting her schedule for me to meet Snow at one of the foster homes. Unfortunately, our schedule didn't work out that morning as we had hope. Since I was already in the area attending a dog event with my dog, Jill went above and beyond, and she and Snow met me at the dog event that afternoon. She attended to my dog while I sat in the backseat of her car with Snow. Meeting Snow - It was love at first sight. I knew instantly that Snow was the one. Alley Cat Allies rescued Chloe at 4 weeks, and I started fostering Chloe at 6 weeks and to adopt after she get spayed. When I was ready to bring Snow home, Chloe (8 weeks) and Cailey both had a viral infection. Jill wanted to make sure both Chloe and Cailey fully recovered before Snow came home, and she offered to keep Snow until my 2 girls are recovered. She didn't want to risk Snow getting sick. I was so thankful that Jill offered to help. When Snow came home, I took her to the vet and discovered that she might have Feline Herpes because one of Snow's eyes sometimes closes slightly. I was told that Feline Herpes is quite common for stray cats. I mix Feline Lysine supplement in their food to minimize symptoms. All my girls seems healthy, and Luna is the only one exhibiting some symptoms with her eye occasionally. One of the reviewers commented the cats they adopted from this rescue were sick. When rescuing a pet or even purchasing one from a breeder, there is no guarantee the pet will be in perfect health, and the animal rescuers are often not medical experts. This is the risk we all take in exchange for the unconditional love of a pet. I was happy to read that the reviewer got medical care for their cats. Prior to submitting an application for Snow, I submitted a couple of applications for a kitten with 2 local rescues. I never heard from one, and the other had several concerns that I didn't feel were valid. I felt like they are looking for someone who is retired, independently wealthy, and doesn't leave the house. I understand that getting ignored or turned down can be disappointing, upseting, and discouraging when you know that you will care for and will love the pet. I tried to look at it as "it's just not meant to be." If the other 2 rescues allowed me to adopt their kittens that I inquired about, I wouldn't have Luna (aka Snow) now. If you really want a pet, don't give up and keep trying... kind of like finding Mr. or Miss Right. Every rescue has their own set of standards and expectations. I feel that Jill does hold high standards and wants to find the best homes for her rescues. Unlike other rescues, Jill was responsive; she went above and beyond throughout the adoption process; and she continues to be available for me should I need her expertise. She truly is interested in staying in touch, unlike other rescues who would disappear after the adoption is complete. My perception of Jill is that she is quiet and reserved. It is easy for others to misinterpret her demeanor. If the opportunity presents itself, you'll see that she is a nice person who wants the best for her rescues. read more

My family and I recently lost one of our pets and are looking for another companion for our other cat. I have applied to adopt cats all over the country and have come up with the same excuse that this "organization" gave me. The first time I contacted Jill she said the cat I was interested in had over 20 applications and would not be taking anymore applications at this time. Thinking that at least 1 of the 20 would be acceptable and the cat would be adopted. That was over 2 weeks ago and the cat is still up for adoption. I emailed her again and she responded quickly till I told her we have a cat that's 5 yrs old. I didn't know that meant ancient and wouldn't allow me to even qualify for an acceptable home. Also I was told that I lived too far outside of the area for her volunteers to do the mandatory home visit. The problem is there are not a lot of kittens/cats that my family is interested in our location. I thought the ENTIRE purpose of the word RESCUE was to adopt animals and give them a great home. Not pass on over 20 applicants and keep the kittens/cats in the "foster" homes till they are so old that many applicants are no longer interested. I felt the need to share my experience with all of you in hopes that you actually find a companion and don't have to give over your first born, your last bill and maybe some DNA samples just to adopt. This is the main reason why there are so many poor animals that never get adopted and are kept in cages the rest of their lives. I was going away on vacation and didn't want to take my cat to be boarded for 8 days. I feel like they aren't given the attention that she needed. Dealing with Jill was pretty awful. Went to HAFR to adopt a cat. We have three cats -- all are very well cared for -- up to date on their shots etc. It's just my husband and I -- we have no children and have no plans to have any. I reached out to Jill about two specific cats. She promptly turned me down because she wanted to give the cats to someone else who would have more time to spend with each cat. She never asked our schedule ... p.s. my husband and I are home most of the day and all of our cats are extremely loved! Each cat has cuddle time with both my husband and I daily! There are SO many animals that go without a loving home. It's truly sad to see someone say they have the animal's best interest at heart when it's clear they don't. I was just perusing petfinder.com recently to see that Cutty, one of the cats I was interested in is STILL up for adoption ... and this was months ago that this happened. So I guess it's better for this cat to just not be adopted than to be in a home with three other playmates. Makes perfect sense. It seems that I am not the only person to be discriminated against ... most of the reviews on here are specifically directed at Jill. I hope that whoever is reading this will consider reaching out to another adoption agency -- Homeward Trails was absolutely wonderful to work with -- we adopted two of our three cats from them! read more

I was a first time pet owner and was very impressed by Jill's set up and recommendations for everything that I needed to prepare for Freyja's arrival. I was able to visit the foster home for my cat to learn more about her and see how she interacted with others. Freyja came home with all of her medical history, proof of shots, microchip information, etc. Once I adopted Freyja, I contacted Jill many times for advice - at one point my cat had an eye infection and Jill left me eye drops for her- she truly cares about each pet and is committed to making the experience successful. If I could give a zero, I would. I contacted this business to consider adopting two kittens as companions to my older cat who recently lost her companion to cancer. I submitted an application for two that I thought might work (you can't even meet the kittens until they get a form), and I got a snotty reply back that I clearly am an experienced pet owner but they had two concerns. I responded to their concerns that I would consider them, took a weekend to read through the entire set of information they set me (which entailed two full websites of information and still no actual recommended solutions!), and sent them another email saying that I agreed with them on one of the concerns. They then told me that they had closed my application and I'd have to resubmit! WTH???! No word from them that they were closing it, no word from them on my response, NOTHING. And by the way, the snottiness of the person responding to emails at all make me wonder how they ever place any animals at all. Go elsewhere. Don't walk, RUN. They may do good work, but it's despite their staff. read more

I cannot thank Jill and Home Alone Feline Rescue enough! We had a great experience with them and continue to receive the benefit of assistance and guidance from caring and knowledgeable experts in feline care. We first came into contact with Jill when we learned about the plight of Orpheus, a cat that had been abandoned at the Washington Humane Society before reaching foster care. Even though Orpheus was not technically fostered by Home Alone, Jill was incredibly generous with her time and guidance as we adopted Orpheus and dealt with his various medical issues. When the time came to adopt a brother for Orphie, we did not hesitate to contact Home Alone and just adopted a very sweet companion, Wolfie, who is well adjusted and socialized. Wolfie's foster mother JudyAnn was also incredibly generous with her time, answering our questions and giving us tips and hints to ensure that Wolfie's introduction and transition went well. Jill also took the time to visit our home, gave us some great tips for integration, and stayed with us to make sure that the initial introduction went well. Words cannot express how happy we are with Home Alone Feline rescue and I heartily recommend this organization to anyone interested in adopting a cat(s). read more

My experience with Home Alone Feline Rescue, managed by Jill G, was great. I lost my eldest cat in January and my remaining cat needed a buddy. I also have a very large rescue dog so finding the right personality to fit in our home was essential. Jill's rescue group is small and all of the cats are fostered in local homes; this means they know personality! I had the chance to meet a few cats (and their wonderful fosters) before I met Rudy. Seeing Rudy in action with his foster family's large dog and cats, talking through his personality, and being able to interact with him twice really made me comfortable that he was the perfect fit. It's been three weeks and everyone is doing fantastic. I can't thank Jill enough for her help in finding exactly the right fit for my household and existing fellas. I'm also planning to use Jill as a cat sitter for my next out of town trip. I know that my feline crew will be in wonderful hands. read more
