In our view, Home Fur-Ever truly earns five stars. We saw a picture of "Louie" on Petfinder some four years ago, and he's now cuddled up in his bed beside me as I write this. Louie is truly the most wonderful dog we have ever had, and we have had several. Thank you, Home Fur-Ever. The adoption process is rigorous, but that is solely due to the commitment Marilyn and her team have to the dogs they place. I encourage those who have authored unfavorable reviews to walk a mile in the largely thankless shoes of the people who work tirelessly in this organization, devoting their time to find homes for homeless dogs with no financial gain to themselves. read more

As with many of the reviews here, not a good experience with this place. What really sucks is I went and met the dog at one of their events, application already completed, and my daughter and I fell in love... only to have phone calls, text messages, e-mails, instagram messages all unreturned. They must not really be in need of having these dogs get adopted. The dog we wanted is still listed as "available" almost a month after submitting the application. What a shame. read more

My mom was brutally attacked and they would not help AT ALL! We took the dog through multiple training classes we've contacted obedience teachers and they do not help at all. I have been trying to adopt a pet for almost 3 weeks. Application completed 2 weeks ago. Many emails and messages sent asking if the pet is still available. Absolutely no response. The dog I am or was interested in is at Pet Supplies Plus today for a meet and greet. I asked again if the dog was still available, the status of my aplication for adoption, is there a highlevelof interest, etc., No response. I am a responsible dog owner. My Yorkie died in December and he was going to be 20 years old this February. I have adopted many rescues, have a fenced yard and am mostly home during the day. It is hard to understand this lack of communication or responsiveness. This is an exhausting experience and an organization that is difficult to deal with. My prayers are for the dogs that may be missing a good home because the potential adopter is never contacted or has just given up. Very sad. I would not deal with this place. I have to imagine they are only in it for donations. Filled out an app. No response. Waited several days. Filled out another app. No response. Sent several emails. I make $150k+ per year I have a half acre lot - fenced I have a history of dog ownership and all have died of old age Every dog I've had has been a rescue My current dog is 12 and gets cooked chicken, rice, and dry food daily. My dogs have a sun room with a separate AC and heat setup when I'm out. They have access to a fenced side yard. My dogs sleep inside at night... and often during the day. When I'm home, my dogs can go in and out as they please I live on a lake. My dogs can go swimming I work from home I'm not qualified? You guys have no interest in adopting out dogs to good homes. One of the great things about this rescue is that they're foster based, which means their volunteers can tell you everything about a dog's personality and what they need in a new home. I was searching for an adult GSD and saw one at their booth at the Novi pet expo, but learned he had a strong prey drive and wouldn't do well with my cats. Sharon, one of their amazing volunteers, helped me find a new dog that would be a better fit- a GSD puppy that would grow up with the cats and be okay with them. The application was long and they definitely cover their bases, but that's what a good rescue should do. They made sure I was prepared for 10-15 years with a strong, driven breed, and that I was fully committed. Their process weeds out anyone who isn't serious and allows them to help you get ready for your new pet. They give a list of trainers and require you complete two sessions with them, and since I had planned to ask for recommendations I didn't mind. All the trainers are force free and use positive reinforcement, which is exactly what I was looking for! I still keep in contact with Sharon to show her photos of my dog while he grows up, and I know the rescue will always be there if I have any questions. They've already helped me find an amazing doggie daycare and we completed our first training course with a trainer they recommended. read more

2 1/2 years after adopting I get a letter in the mail stating that I have 10 days to send proof of sending the dog to training or relinquish him back to them. Plus when they brought him to my house to check out my house & yard, they fed him McDonald's in the vehicle so he was throwing up. read more

Hate to say that I agree with most of the reviews here. I have rescued two dogs from this group. First one about 12 years ago and another 3 years ago. The experience was worse the second go round. I echo most of the comments in the other reviews so I will summarize: 1) The interview process was strange and unnecessarily harsh. I understand you need to place dogs with responsible owners and there are a lot of awful people out there. BUT, some of the questions were down right rude or ridiculous. For instance, one of the questions was "If you were to divorce, who would get the dog?" My wife and I were married two years at that point and hadn't discussed divorce, who would get custody of the kids, let alone a dog!! Just a strange question. The application was even more harsh for the second dog. 2) There were a number of strange "requirements" around vets, yard size, etc. While I understand they have specific OPINIONS on what a proper home for a dog is, it is just that. AN OPINION. For an organization that is struggling to find good homes, they make it very difficult for families to adopt. Granted, they want to ensure the animals go to great situations. My yard shouldn't matter. Why? I am not getting it fenced because of a HOA. And, my dogs are not left outside unattended (there are coyotes in the woods behind my house). 3) They are insulting. You can have requirements and "interview" people without insulting or yelling at them. I am a professional, as is my wife. We have also both been lifelong animal and dog owners. Happy, healthy dogs that have lived full lives. 4) Apparently things are getting even crazier as my wife's sister is trying to rescue from this place and the guidelines are even crazier now! So much so that my sister in law was angry with them about how the rep and a foster person insulted her and their home. My sister in law has owned multiple dogs for years. Again, happy and healthy pets. My brother in law was so pissed after the "home visit" that he told them that if they kept dragging them along, they would just visit a breeder that week and be done with it. Long story short. Please consider rescuing. It is a worthy cause and plenty of animals need a great home. But look to other groups to support. Life is too short to deal with rudeness and hassle. They don't need to be this way to ensure they find a good home for their animals. Treat people respectfully! read more

Got super weird vibes from this place. Some friends of mine were fostering two puppies through this organization and my husband and I after several years of wanting a second dog started the process to adopt one of the two. After a wildly invasive questionnaire, investigation (not sure what their qualifications on this were) and vet check we were getting positive responses and it seemed like we were all set to adopt. About a week of no contact then my husband gets a phone call by some lady we hadn't even been talkimg with claiming she didn't think we'd be home enough to care for the dog. I was so tired of the back and forth at that point that we just backed out of the process. They can't adopt out dogs because they keep setting their standard higher and higher during the adoption process until it's at a point literally no one can reach. We are a childless married couple with a huge fenced in yard. We make over 100k a year, our dog got an all clear from our vet, he goes to training and day care and we are gone a normal amount during work days. Wasn't good enough. read more

I actually JUST got off the phone with whoever's number is posted for this rescue (its a cell phone). Whoever this person is was beyond rude and condescending. I called about a certain dog thats been on pet-finder and their site for over a week now to see if he had been adopted. When I called she said "Oh yea, he's already been adopted." I replied with 'Maybe you guys should update the site(s)..' To which she interrupts to say, "Well we are all volunteers and we have lives, and children, and jobs, and husbands, and other commitments." And I said "okay, but I have been trying to reach out through multiple websites, emails, and phone numbers, over the past week and NO ONE can reply?" Then she snaps, "Did you hear what I just said?" And proceeded to go on with that question like a broken record anytime I tried to get a statement in, then ending in her laughing into the phone and hanging up. I texted the number "No wonder your organization has terrible reviews, you are extremely rude and treat your possible customers terrible. I don't care if you have prior commitments, don't make a volunteer organization one of them if you can't do the job." We drove two and half hours each way to pick up a dog we were interested in adopting for the rescue and took the dog into our home. Unfortunately the folks that surrendered the dog lied about the dog's behavior. The dog turned out to be extremely violent and the dog would lunge and bite ANYONE that was near. We communicated this to the rescue that we could not keep the dog in our home because it was dangerous. Then poof they no longer respond. After the dog bit the third person in our home we called the rescue and advised them to come and retrieve the dog immediately or that we would surrender it to the Humane Society. They had the audacity to say, "why do you let people in your house? The dog is only scared!" Keep in mind the rescue never once met or evaluated this dog! This dog has severe behavior issues and it's a very large dog making it dangerous and needs a very specific home and trainer. They then tried to place the dog in a home and told the people interested that the dog was treated poorly in its current foster home. Well, that person contacted us directly about the dog and we told them the truth. Avoid this "rescue" at all costs. They clearly don't know what they are doing and don't have the dogs best interests in mind. They continually lie and make things up on the fly. These imbeciles are going to put this dog in an unsuspecting home and get it euthanized because it is going to hurt someone. Oh, and they are just really, really trashy people. read more

We fostered a dog for four days and found out that our current dog was just too hostile and territorial which was leading to fights. The foster dog was a good dog and would have worked out just fine in a home without a territorial dog. There was no aggression towards me and actually a great deal of tolerance toward our territorial pet. The rescue was very kind and helpful in the process and the dog was exactly as described. I have no complaints with how things were in dealing with home fur-ever. The owner does a great service by trying to save the lives of these animals and we feel bad that we couldn't help. We hope somebody gives him a good home because he is a beautiful dog and deserves a home. read more

Complete waste of time and energy. I went to see a GSD they had moved along with others into the local pet store. After waiting for about an hour, the Director informed me that the dog could not live with a cat. I can't judge if that's true or not, but if it was they should have done prospective owners the courtesy of listing that requirement on the writeup. Before I went to look at the dog, they gave me a list of things I'd have to do that were borderline inappropriate including not only telling me that I needed training for the dog, but what type of training was ok and not ok. Considering at some point dog ownership changes from rescuer to owner, I decided I don't want to adopt a dog *and* a dog micromanager. If you work with this outfit, prepare to list them on your tax return as dependents. I've owned show dogs before (Soft Coated Wheatons), and this obstacle course they set up was far beyond any hoops I'd jumped through before. So this is where I jump off. My husband and I applied to adopt a puppy at one of your events on 2/17/18. I was told after a week and a half I could call to get an update on the application, which is what I did. I called the only number I could find on google. Not only was the person that answered incredibly rude, but she was also very unprofessional. I did not get her name as she rushed me off the call and directed me to text the number with our info. Again, I did. After 2 days of no response, I messaged home furever via Facebook and got a response several hours later that simply said "applications are still being reviewed." It is now almost 1 month later, and I never heard anything from this rescue regarding our application. I'm not quite sure what the prerequisites are for adopting a puppy with home furever. My husband and I have 2 toddlers (the puppy we applied for was currently being fostered in a home with toddlers), we own our home, have a fully fenced yard, and I'm a stay at home parent and would have been home most of the time with the dog. So I'm incredibly confused as to what the issue was. Not only was the application very intrusive as to personal life (future children, future divorce), but the woman that interviewed us on the spot was condescending and rude. I would NEVER recommend anyone to apply for a puppy through them. Again, I'm very confused at to what they are looking for when reviewing applications, as to my family and I (in my opinion) are pretty much perfect candidates to adopt a dog. I hope Simone (the puppy we applied for) goes to a wonderful home, we have since already adopted a dog through the devoted barn in Newport. I DO HIGHLY recommend exploring other agencies before applying for a dog with home furever. Unfortunately, I have to agree with all of the other poor reviews. We found a dog we liked at one of their adoption events in West Bloomfield. Here's how the process went for us: Application / In-Person Interview: Like everyone else has said, it's a totally invasive, 4-page long application. I found it interesting that if you are under 30, your parents need to sign the application too. Ridiculous. We completed the interview, and were contacted the next day about moving on to the next step. Home Visit: Took a few tries for the volunteer to commit to a day to come visit our house, but when they did, it only took about 10 minutes max. At this point, we were approved for the next step... Foster-To-Adopt: Had to drive to the fosters house in a very specific window of time to pick up the dog. The fosters home was tiny, had about 5 other dogs living there, and a living room full of dog crates. This made me think "wow, if this is their standard, then we should have no problem being approved". We took her home, and started getting her used to the house. Bought her a bed, toys, and showered her in affection (we are a couple with no other pets or children). She was so happy! We noticed that she always cowered when we brought out the leash, leading us to believe one of her prior fosters beat her with it. But we figured we could give her a good home and help train her positively. This part of the process is supposed to last two weeks, but after 10 days we asked if the process could be sped up because we were so happy with this dog in our home - a real part of the family - and we needed her vet records to start getting her enrolled in daycare and training. Adoption / Judgment Day: No happy ending here. Took her to their adoption event on Saturday to finalize the adoption. We arrived on time, but Melinda was not at her makeshift desk until 15 minutes after the agreed-upon time. When she arrived, she scolded us for being late. Then she told us to put the dog in the cage, to which we disagreed - why was it necessary? Then onto the paperwork. I'll just highlight what you should know: 1 - the dog is never really yours, it's property of HFE and they have the right to pay random home visits, access to all veterinary records, and can take the dog back at any time 2 - for puppies, they personally administer all vaccines (except for rabies, which legally must be done by a vet). I asked, and they said that no one on their staff is a trained veterinarian but "trust us, we know what we're doing ". We were concerned they hadn't administered them correctly, but we were met with rude and condescending comments. Their "proof" of vaccinations are literally a sticker from the medicine vial pasted onto an index card. We also questioned this: what vet / daycare / trainer could reasonably believe this is for our dog? Again, treated rudely for asking valid questions. The first time this dog had seen a licensed vet was when it was spayed, a week prior to us bringing her into our home. 3 - they asked us if we wanted them to put a microchip in her, right then and there, or have our vet do it. We said we preferred the vet to do it (again, licensed professional versus who knows), and they got upset with us. 4 - this dog had been in 5 foster homes over 5 months. Poor puppy!!! What does this say about their organization? After tirelessly going back and forth, we finally had all of the papers signed and money exchanged ($375 cash). Now, they wanted a picture of us with the dog. We said "no thanks", don't want our pictures floating around on their Facebook or whatever they decide to do with them. The situation escalated, and they told us to forget it - NO DOG. They immediately refunded our money and ripped up our paperwork. ALL FOR A PICTURE. So here we are, incredibly sad and disappointed that this dog we have come to love was literally snatched from us for a stupid reason. In the end, HFE has serious issues. Lots of great people willing to give dogs a great home, but they behave atrociously and deny what's in the best interest of these animals. Sick, sick people (Marilyn and Melinda). read more

I tried to adopt from this rescue a few years ago. I was a stay at home mom with a degree in biology. We had a nice fenced in yard in Livonia. A history of dog ownership with support documentation from friends, family, and vets. I paid for my son and I to go to the dog expo in Novi to meet a dog we had been communicating with the rescue about. The foster mom was super nice and talked to me about the dog. When I went to fill out an application, I was treated very poorly. The fist question I was asked was "does your husband know you're here?", in a very snotty tone. After being interrogated, I was told I was unfit for any dog at the rescue. After complaining about the way I was treated, Marilyn (the head lady) said that I was treated that way by a special needs person that "isn't supposed to talk to potential adopters.". I then asked if we could have another interview. The rescue never responded to my numerous requests. Months later (me still trying to adopt this dog), they post a picture of the dog with a "please adopt me" sticker. I started publicly complaining (respectfully) that I had been trying to adopt her for months and questioned why I was still declared "unfit" considering what Marilyn had said in an email. The rescue then blocked me from their Facebook page. A couple months later, a friend notified me that the rescue posted that the foster mom had adopted the dog. After being heart broken, I researched more about this rescue and found that they have more issues than your average rescue. I honestly believe that Marilyn may actually be an animal hoarder. This rescue is racist/sexist/classist. They use the "it's for the animals" excuse to discriminate. Unless you are rich and white or know someone who volunteers here, you most likely will not get a read more

A puppy was placed with my friend with a foster-adopt contract. Because she asked "too many questions" and wanted to view her adoption contract, they came and picked up the puppy. They were requiring her to purchase a book even though she has had dogs before. This is not a rescue, but a shady agency that rips animals from perfectly good homes. I wanted to share our experience with fostering two puppies from Home Fur-Ever Rescue. So on their Facebook page I said we'd be interested in fostering a puppy or dog. They asked about our living situation. We have two young kids (4 and 2). Fenced in yard and my wife is a stay at home mom due to health issues (high risk pregnancy). We own a friendly, healthy, Corgi. Marilyn got back to us about a week later and asked us to foster two puppies. I said yes. My wife was so excited. They ended up bringing them by an hour later with no crate. Carla was the one who dropped them off and told us "good luck, these puppies are bad". My husband looked at me like "should we be taking these in?" They told us they were lab/terriers but then again EVERYTHING on their website is "Lab" or "Terrier"...when they're obviously Pitbulls. It is more about the lie of the breed than the breed itself. If you go on their Facebook now she has a dog that just had a litter of puppies...she claims their Jack Russell's... obviously pits. They'll lie about a breed to get you to adopt since so many people are turned off by pits. Some dogs they have in their rescue we're picked up off the streets which is fine but nobody has any idea of the personality of the dog or about the actual breed. I'm sorry but if I bring in a dog and it snaps at one of my kids, they're out. My children come first. The event was total bull. You have to be able to attend the adoption event every Saturday. They want you to move people along if they're not there to adopt but that's also how you get people to adopt. Someone holds a puppy and falls in love with it and fills out an application. I've bought plenty of things I didn't plan to. I had multiple people fill out an application for the puppies that were awesome people but I guess they were all turned down?? I know they want to find a good home but as I looked through some of the application questions, let's just say they were being ridiculous. If they really care about getting these dogs good homes they shouldn't be so choosey. I have friends who are amazing pet owners and they're in an apartment. I'm not saying to hand the dog over to the first person who walks in but when you see a good fit there shouldn't be a problem. I was told by other fosters that they are rude to the people during the interview. One foster lady that stood next me during the event told me they sort of threw two puppies at her and a few days later Marilyn came by and begged her to take in another puppy that was about 4 weeks old that she now has to bottle feed and that the puppy shouldn't have been taken from it's mother this young. There is a lot of lies, unprofessionalism, and rudeness from the all the people (except Lisa. Did not have any problems with her) that ran Home Fur-Ever. Then one of the Fur Ever home people said these Black Lab looking puppies were the siblings of the puppies I was fostering. They were definitely different breeds and ages (our dogs were HUGE compared to the others). More lies. Even people walking by was like "WTF..." Nobody bought the bull no matter how hard we tried. During their stay, our Corgi was scared of them so she stayed hiding underneath our bed. The puppies were very hyper which is normal for pups but we underestimated just how hyper. The boy puppy kept jumping up on our son and biting his feet when he'd start walking. We underestimated the work. For settle down time I'd put them in our laundry room to eat and drink and nap since the crate we were suppose to get, never came. In a half hour of them being in there, the room was trashed with torn up pee pads and poop everywhere. Again yes, I know they're puppies. We just never imagined it would be this much work and it became harder on my wife who is pregnant. Then after talking amongst each other we just decided it wasn't working out. Between the lies, the work, the long application process where we couldn't move these dogs, the rudeness of the organization we just didn't want to do it anymore. We texted Marilyn and told her it wasn't working out and to see if we can line someone else up for them. She lectured us telling us the puppies should mean more than our kids (great one of those people) and she knew she should have never let us foster because we're young with kids (both in our 30s), and said the most awful things to us that we ended up hanging up. She then texted and said Carla is on her way over to get them. I told them that I was at work, that I'd have to be later. Nope not an answer. I had to leave work (wife's at an ultrasound to check baby's growth) to meet her. So my work is pissed at me. I get there and handed Carla the puppies, and she asked "what about the cage?" you never gave us one! So about a half hour later I'm at work and Marilyn is texting me and asking me why I'm so mean and what did the dogs do that were so bad bc they're only puppies and that the dogs don't want to be picked up bc of something I did...screw them! read more

I would rather work with a pet store than these scammers. Just about all these places (foster/pet adoption) are shysters. They make a baseless claim they get hundreds of applications daily but what they spend most of their day doing is passing judgement on people who can give animals a good and loving home. I never thought it could be so difficult to adopt a dog in need. I get that this is a volunteer organization but it it's horribly run. Very unorganized and rude to potential adopters. Me, being a mid-twenties guy with a girlfriend (not a wife), had zero luck with these people. I've had dogs my entire life and wanted nothing more than to adopt a lifelong buddy...I might as well been a convicted dog abuser to them. Even looking past that, the events are really unorganized. There is zero communication as to which dogs are available and whether or not they will be at a given event. You might have better luck if you're a perfect nuclear family but otherwise look elsewhere. read more

Prelude: we had just started looking for a dog and Home Fur Ever was the first pet adoption agency we came across... We attended Meet you Best Friend at the Detroit Zoo event and came across a dog we liked from the Home Fur Ever agency. Finding a volunteer was difficult as there weren't many of them at their area at the time. We finally found someone and asked if we could play with the dog we were interested in. After playing with him my wife and I decided he would be perfect for us. I inquired if the dogs foster family was there so we could ask questions and get some more info on the dog. We were told she would be back in an hour. After wandering around we went back and asked if we could get the application process started....this is where I started to become very annoyed with Home Fur Ever. Two pages front and back of questions!!! Ranging from questions that were valid (is your yard fenced) to ridiculous (is divorce in the near future and how many kids do you plan on having). It took us 30 minutes to fill out this questionnaire! Sorry but I'm not a vet and I apology but I don't know the correct answer to "how do dogs get heart worm?" Should that matter? Since I know how to prevent it.... Finally hand in the application now it's time for an interview with a volunteer. The volunteer basically questioned every answer we put including the one about how dogs get heart worm. We ended with "ok if you don't hear from us in two weeks that doesn't mean you would be a bad dog parent, you just don't meet the needs for this dog." If we did hear from them, they would come check our house out, then bring the dog to check our house out, then if finally chosen get the dog. But not so fast...if they check back and the don't think it's doing good with you. See ya, the dog you spent a month trying to get goes back in the system. It was at that point that my wife and I said, even if they call us back I'm denying them. I'm not messing around with that. As someone else mentioned they are far too controlling. If you think you're the only one who can handle the pets you have maybe you should keep them. In the words of Wayne and Garth-"we're not worthy!!! We're not worthy!!!!" The application I filled out for my professional job had less pages than this dog application did. I also agreed with another poster who said if only they treated their adopters as well as their pets. We ended up adopting another a dog from another agency. With nicer people, a more relevant questionnaire and no BS. It's also interesting that other agencies post awards they've won as non profits. And Home Fur Ever has none (that I can find) on their site...that says a lot. I'm sure someone will reply "you're only giving them a negative a review because you didn't get a dog." False. Since I live an hour and 25 mins away from the (Saturday only) event to adopt, I tried reaching out via email 2 times to see if the dog I was interested in would be there. I finally had to call because I received no reply and the person on the phone was very curt and disinterested in helping me (despite my emphasizing that it is a very long drive). I was told the dog would be there and I even double checked the schedule on the website while driving to the location and then arrived to be told that the event had been cancelled that morning because a foster had lost a dog and they were all out looking for it. Not only this, but the people that were still at the location were incredibly rude, didn't apologize at all, insisted the cancellation was on their website since that morning and wouldn't even let me say hello to the puppy that was present, despite it being from the same litter. Since I'd driven an hour and a half for nothing, I was at least hoping to get some questions answered, but I was met with annoyance and was told that I could not even fill out an application. At *that* point I was also informed I wouldn't be able to take the dog home that day, or even the next week, since I had to wait for a 'home visit' and then also a 'trial period'. Fair enough on these things, but I'd like to actually have a 8 week old puppy for the cute stages, since they grow so fast. What is ludicrous though is that not only is their application form incredibly invasive (please don't ask me if I *plan* on having kids and the brand of dog food? Really?), but they insist that you come back to *their* location for all additional shots/procedures, requiring I drive 1.5 hours to their facilities. I really don't know if it is legal to attempt to reclaim a dog if we simply don't meet their standards, but they also ask that you use dog trainers *only on their approved list* and that's just simply out of line. The humane society asks you a half a page of questions, sits down with you for 5 minutes and lets you go home with your dog that day. I mean, I get it, you don't want the dog to go to a bad home, but these are *dogs* ffs, not children, and people CAN just lie on the form if they really want to abuse dogs! And as a result, poor dogs are sitting for longer and longer without owners and missing out on important socialization periods. Case in point, the dog I wanted is here: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/36861802 You'll see she was born on 10/7, and I attempted to go the second week of December, when the pup was 8 weeks old. Just this week, more than two months later, she's finally adopted. I'd recommend you avoid this rescue if you don't want a headache and a threat that they can take your dog back if they don't like what you do with it. I wish I would have Yelp searched Home Fur-Ever before I wasted time going to an event to see the dogs. Many of these negative reviews are spot-on (particular Tony C's): overly extensive application process, an egregiously long acceptance process, controlling nature of the organization, etc. The people who volunteer for the organization are friendly and helpful; however I suspect the main person in charge - Celeste Dunn - is in way over her head and does not know how to efficiently operate such a rescue organization. I attended one of the events to see some puppies. I had to fill out the ridiculously long application while I was there. Bizarrely enough, I asked a young volunteer (she couldn't have been older than 16) that I was going to fill out the app in my car as opposed to a pet store where every dog in there is yapping. She said filling out the app in my car wasn't allowed. Why? Don't ask me. I shrugged my shoulders and went out to my car anyways. After I completed the app, I had to have the oral interview with a volunteer. All they did was reiterate the questions asked on the app. I was told that if I didn't hear back from them in 2 weeks to follow up, or that I wasn't approved. It is now well over a month later, after sending a follow up email, and I still have not heard from anybody. And if I was not approved for a puppy, I do not know why. I have experience with dogs growing up with family pets; and one of the primary concerns on the app was how much time could I spend with the puppy. I work from home, so I could spend as much time with the dog as needed. I'm not sure why I wasn't approved. In conclusion, investigate other dog rescue organizations before Home Fur-Ever. They are so disorganized, and I'm not even completely sure they want to find the dogs they have good homes. I would be an excellent dog owner, but apparently they don't think so. Ms. Dunn needs to seriously think about dismantling her business because it is so poorly managed and presents real customer service issues. read more

I normally don't write a review but I am compelled to let you know of my experience with this Rescue. I went to the adoption event at the Detroit Zoo in September on Friday and was looking at a family of puppies. The foster mother was there and she spoke very highly about the litter. I told her that I wanted my daughter to come on Saturday to see the puppies. We both came back on Saturday and picked out the puppy that we were interested in...once again speaking with the foster mom and she was very polite and helpful! Unfortunately, that's where the good experience ended. After filling out the application and waiting for weeks with no answer, I went on Petfinder.com and there the puppy that we wanted to adopt was, still without a permanent home. I sent an email to the Rescue directly and did not receive an answer. After another week, I sent an email to the Rescue via Petfinder. I received a response asking for a little more information about myself. I explained that I had been to the adoption event and had not heard anything. I received a response that if it had been more than 2 weeks I was not a good fit for the puppy. I questioned how this could be determined just by filling out an application and a less than 5 minute interview with a volunteer. Obviously if I'm still inquiring about the puppy I am still interested and in the meantime this little one still doesn't have a home! I am truly disappointed with this Rescue and told them this in another email and let them know that I would not recommend them to any friends or family. The reply to this was that it was mean of me to say that I would not recommend the Rescue and that their recommendation to me was to go to a local shelter near me and adopt an animal who is in jeopardy of being euthanized or older. I don't post reviews but when I was reading these about this rescue and about Marilyn, I do have to say a few things. I came across a dog on their site that I felt would fit well with my lifestyle. When I inquired about him, it took a few days to get a response back but I also understand that rescues are always busy, as I've always rescued my previous dogs from other locations so that never bothered me. Marilyn and the volunteers do ask you a lot of questions and to some, it may seem very personal questions but they're trying to find good homes for the animals and I appreciate that. And I had admitted to Marilyn that I live somewhere that I have nothing to meet their expectations other than giving a dog a great home and give him the love that he deserves. They allowed me to foster him and to hopefully adopt him. I've had him for just a little over a month and I have had some serious problems arise but it has Nothing to do with this rescue or Marilyn. It had everything to do with his health. In fact, Marilyn is the reason this dog is still alive. I came home from work one day to vomit all over my house. When I rushed him to the vet and they told me that he has bladder stones, I called Marilyn. And he has been in the hospital for 3 weeks now and she texts me every single day with updates on him. Everyone has different opinions and yes, I can absolutely agree with other reviewers that this rescue is a very difficult one to adopt a dog from. BUT!! It's because they care about these creatures and they want them to have a forever home. I've not had one negative thought about this rescue nor about Marilyn. That woman has been on the phone with me at nearly midnight to talk to me and calm me down while I'm crying my eyes out because of my dog. I can honestly say that if I do have the chance to adopt him, I would always stay in contact with Marilyn because she is the reason my life is better. read more

I felt obligated to write a review after our recent experience. Hopefully others have better luck , but please be warned! My husband and I are huge dog lovers, and have decided it's finally the right time for us to get one. We really want to rescue. We attended one of the Petco events, and fell in love with several dogs. We filled out the very long application and had an interview with the director. We were interested in 3 dogs, one of which was an older dog and unlikely to be adopted by others. They informed us we would be contacted in 10-14 days. Well 14 days later...no word. We went to another Petco event and saw the same dogs. The foster family and several volunteers remembered us and asked why we were there. They were very surprised we hadn't been contacted. They went and got the director, and after 30 minutes of waiting for her to talk to us, she gave us a short response of "What's the problem here? If you weren't contacted, you weren't approved." She then walked away. We've sent emails, tried calling, nothing. It's no surprise this shelter has so many dogs...they must not want to give them away, or are too unorganized to successfully find the dogs a new home. This process has been nothing short of frustrating. We feel so bad for the dogs, and just wanted to give one a loving home. It's been over a month now. I guess we'll be moving on to a new place. We're devastated, as we were so ready to make one of these little guys part of our new family. Hopefully someone will eventually be able to give them the home they deserve! read more

Let me start this review by noting that in no way is it to deter people from fostering and/or adopting rescues pets. Rather, it is a precautionary tale on knowing what you are signing up for, before falling in love with your new children and best friends. Stella and Trouble were both heartworm and cherry eye free in June 2017. As normal, after every vet visit, I spoke to Melinda to let her know how they were doing for their records. During this particular conversation I decided to ask her how and when I can adopt them, since I've had them in my care for a year and a half. This lady had the audacity to say 'I didn't know that you wanted to adopt them. You've showed no interest in adopting them.' Excuse me? I've been loving these dogs and taking them to every appointment, spoiling them with food and toys and treats, yet I've showed no interest in their adoption? Could she not read the foster forms where we checked fostering to adopt? Strike 1. She then proceeded to tell me about how the adoption process works and asked me questions that are typical. She learned of my age, my boyfriends age, where we live and how we obtained the house, what my job is, what his job is, if I plan on moving etc. Somewhere in the mix of unseemingly personal questions, I tell her that I am attending school in the fall. I'm not sure if she doesn't trust 24-25 year old, or if the idea of having money for dogs care is over her head if its not through HomefurEver, but she condescendly says, 'I just don't know if you should adopt them. Are you going to have enough time or money? I just don't think that's a good idea'. Straight to strike 3. I dare her to find a new home for these dogs. This was my breaking point with HomefurEver. At the end of this miserable conversation, she told me she would be sending me forms to fill out, since she did not have my new address on file. I waited and never received them from her. I contacted Marilyn, who told someone else to send them to me, and I finally received them in email. I emailed the forms back to the lady within 2 hours, and she responded thank you-so I know they received them. A week later, I receive a text from Marilyn who said she never got them. So, to quicken this process, I send them to her. 2 weeks after initially sending them, I receive a call from Melinda, who said that she never received them. I sent it again- for the 3rd time. How can you successfully adopt out rescue pets, with such extreme disorganization. Maybe some communication between the different people working there would be beneficial. I may be young, and yes, at times irresponsible, but I would never put these dogs in a situation that would make them unhappy. Further, if I ever needed help financially, my parents understand my love for them, and would graciously help me if I ever needed it. Also, you call yourself a rescue when you think that you can take 2 badly injured dogs, who finally found happiness, love and peace, and just relocate them like that to a new home? How happy do you think my dogs would be. When I finally had an appointment to adopt them, I was reading online and it said that food is provided to fosters. In addition, when we first got the dogs, we bought HomefurEver a cage, and was told that we would be refunded. Since I was hoping to cut HomefurEver out of my life after the adoption (which will never happen), I decided to text Maryln to ask her. The response I received was SO rude, there are no words to describe it. If your running an origination, speak to people as equals. She spoke to me like I was the scum or the earth. After, she proceeded to tell me on how they may not be open at the end of the year due to financial difficulties. Maybe the reason Homefurever isn't making as much money as is should be, is the direct fault of the management, i.e Melinda and Marilyn. Like the dogs are required to take training classes, take people classes, and learn how to be more cordial and professional when handling people. Yes, this means people of ALL ages. My family and I were more than willing to go to our own vet and use our own money to pay for the dogs and all of their surgery. My list unforgivable moments with HomeFurEver can go on for awhile- as I haven't even mentioned the hour drive to the vet, the shots out of the garage and of course, the many 'pleasant' conversations with Melinda. All in all, before adopting or fostering with HomeFurEver know these few things:The volunteers are amazing and are doing a great job. This review is in no way reflective of the volunteers.;The head people, Melinda and Maryln should not be at the top. They are rude and condescending, and extremely disorganized. I do not want people to be treated the way my family were; Be ready to share your life with them. I could have adopted a child from China faster then I could adopt these dogs. If you do choose to adopt or foster from Home Furever, thank you. We need more people who are willing to take in rescue dogs. read more

Over the last 4 months I've had contact with this organization. I first read about them trying to change a bully breed ordinance in my city of Waterford so I thought they were an active and good rescue. I liked that they were active in politics on behalf of animals. So I filled out their form on the website to volunteer with them. I never heard back from them. Then I went to an adoption event at Pet Supply Plus and really liked a male terrier dog. However, they have some weird rule about not adopting out a male if you already have a male, even though they are both fixed. I think this was the first red flag that these people don't know what they are doing. Everyone I know has had multiple male dogs and never had issues as long as they are fixed and introduced to each other properly. So I selected a female dog that I really liked and thought I would be a great home for. Oh, and the lady that did my interview kept saying how 'psychotic' this dog was or how 'crazy' that dog is. I didn't understand why she would describe dogs this way. I don't think she was doing a good job promoting these animals. If the dogs have issues, use better words to describe them. I waited many weeks to hear back about this dog and never did despite phone calls, text messages, and emails to the rescue. And the poor dog is still listed on their website. This rescue is disorganized and has horrible communication skills with potential adopters. read more

Home Fur-ever is the best volunteer run organization I have worked for who cares about health and welfare of animals. HFE cares for the welfare of animals, if they are healthy and getting proper vet care. Some people may not like adoption process but there is more than just adopting a dog. This organization doesn't have any respect for the people interested in giving homes to homeless animals. They make you jump through lots of hoops (which is fine, as it's important to find good homes for the animals), but then they never get back to you; nor do they respond to you when you try to contact them. It's a waste of time to go to their adoption events at pet stores. It's too bad they aren't a more conscientious or honest organization. I hope Pet Supply Plus and other organizations stop hosting them since care at all about the public that supports them and homeless animals. read more

I was truly disappointed by this rescue organization. I originally spoke with one of the owners the of company on the phone and she was excited for me to come to an adoption event. When I arrived, the staff was nothing but rude and condescending, not only to me, but I overheard them talking rudely to other potential adopters. The whole event was so unorganized and felt stressful. During the interview they were giving my husband and I all of these worst case scenarios "what if you decide to have kids in the future and your dog bites one of them, but it's the kids fault?" We told them we actually can't have kids due to infertility and they said "okay well what if you end up getting pregnant or your neighbor's kid comes over?" Are you kidding me. So unprofessional and insensitive. I already have a rescue pitbull and they were so concerned about the fact that she hadn't been on heartworm meds for the last couple months - they lectured me about how awful it is that my dog wasn't protected from this. My dog is up to date on all of her shots has other health problems that I've spent lots of time and money on. I have volunteered for many rescues in the past and have NEVER seen such a complicated process in my life. They aren't doing these dogs ANY favors. They're looking for all your flaws and mistakes instead of the good things that will make a good home for these pups. read more

I'm going to be honest, this rescue has a few more steps to go through to adopt a dog than most. You can't just show up at an event and leave with a new best friend. But that is why I love them. They are thorough and care about making a forever match, rather than just meeting a quota of animals adopted. They really get to know you and make sure the animal - the breed, age, limitations, etc - are a good fit for your lifestyle before allowing you to adopt. When I fell in love with my Annie at one of the adoption events, I filled out an application, scheduled a home visit, fostered her for a week then was able to adopt her. This meant it wasn't a rash decision and they made sure everything on my application was correct before bringing Annie into my home. They care about their animals! I really respect their process and dedication to forming lasting relationships. Many rescues are so over-full they are just concerned about getting animals adopted out, and often those animals are returned. Home Fur-Ever takes their time to ensure a win-win for both the animal and the family before allowing the adoption to happen. I wish more rescues would follow suit! EDIT: Just to let you know from me meeting my puppy at the event to her being in my house took under 2 weeks. Yes there was a lot of steps, but they contacted me quickly and rearranged their own schedules to get Annie out to me, even though I don't live in by where she was being fostered. read more
