I told them the personality I was looking for and she knew right away which kitten would work for me. My kitten is litter trained, plays with my older cat well and is gentle and loving. I tried to adopt a senior cat that had been stuck in a Petsmart cage for almost a month with no interest. I have two cats, and a cat door and they come and go. The ad, for this cat named Coal says NOTHING about any requirement he remain a totally indoor cat but they REFUSED me because I have a cat door in my condo? The woman I corresponded with was a bitch who seems to be able to read Coal's mind and know that he doesn't want to come be loved at my place. I will NEVER attempt to rescue an animal from these people. Bunch of assholes. read more

I have been involved with NBAR for 2 years. I am their go-to person when it comes to grooming (If you see a naked kitty at the adoption center, I probably did it). I have fostered a litter of 7 kittens (what was I thinking?), 3 3-day old bottle fed kittens (I was a crabby, sleepless zombie that week) as well as a blood thirsty man cat that desperately needed to learn manners and how to behave in a home (wanna see my scar?). I have also been involved in adoption events, as well as rescuing cats that are on "death row" at county animal shelters (17 cats...yup, SEVENTEEN). Royal Oak should feel privileged to have NBAR in their community. They are an amazing organization that takes pride in their mission and never looses sight of what is important, the welfare of the animals in their care. The volunteers of NBAR have a thirst for knowledge and strive to make the organization better on an ongoing basis. They attend conferences, seminars and classes to continue their education in the animal welfare field. With this knowledge, they educate the community to bring awareness to the importance of spaying & neutering pets. Not only does NBAR give homeless animals a voice, all of the tools needed to find a forever home and endless amounts of love, they also have a community outreach program that assists low income residents in feeding their pets during hard times. NBAR's food pantry has helped hundreds of pets stay with their families by providing free pet food, instead of ending up homeless and in a shelter or worse. By definition, a no kill organization is one that does not euthanize animals that are adoptable, nor do they euthanize due to space or financial restraints. A no kill organization will only euthanize animals that are terminally ill or deemed dangerous to humans and not able to be rehabilitated. I can attest that NBAR is one of the very few, true, NO KILL rescues. I have seen NBAR pay for reconstructive surgeries on cats as well as nurse sick animals back to health. They also place difficult cats into foster care so that they can learn how to be a cat through socialization and rehabilitation. Since NBAR has set up roots in Royal Oak, they have gathered some fabulous volunteers! Many volunteer 10+ hours each week at the adoption center. There are ZERO employees at NBAR. The organization is solely run by volunteers. If you are looking for a new feline friend or another cat to add to your collection, stop by NBAR and take a few cats home! The cats LOVE getting attention from the public and the socialization helps them become even more adoptable! This place is absolutely amazing! It's a cat only rescue but the staff is so knowledgeable about the personality and history of each cat. A woman greeted us when we came in and gave us a tour of all the cats in the shelter. The application and adoption process were extremely simple and you could tell they wanted what was best for each and every cat. Okay, so I'm biased. I used to volunteer here when I lived in the area. That said, who would know better how awesome a place is than someone who worked "behind the scenes". This organization treats their animals amazingly and truly cares about each cat they take in. The rescue is not your typical animal shelter which feels dingy and depressing. The rooms are clean, decorated, and filled with activities to make the cats feel at home. I adopted my own cat from the rescue two years ago and the process was straightforward and smooth, landing me the most awesome cat ever. Their petfinder listings and website show photos of all their adoptable animals, and their facebook page is kept very up-to-date. In my opinion, NBAR sets the gold standard for what an animal rescue should be. Of note, NBAR only has cats at their building- I believe they work with a dog foster organization and can direct people to adoptable dogs. read more

I recently had to give up two of my furry friends and I kept searching and searching for a suitable place (especially no kill). Then I stumbled across NBAR. This organization is absolutely wonderful. They were incredibly helpful, kind, and caring when it came time to give up my pets. I have met the founders, Jenn and Lisa, and they truly care about the animals in the rescue and strive to make them comfortable, healthy, and happy before they get adopted. The volunteers are a huge part of NBAR's success as well. Honestly, when I left both of my cats at the rescue, I thought it would be months before they got adopted. I was wrong. They got adopted within less than one month, and the rescue notified me that they got adopted! The most helpful aspect of this rescue (and the owners) is that they are flexible. I ended up bringing one of my cats in earlier than planned, and they still took her with open arms, which took so much stress off my shoulders. They also provided me with a large pet carrier to bring the other cat in easily. If you are considering adopting from this rescue or have a feline friend to give up, I very highly suggest considering NBAR. It is well worth your time. Lastly, if you are having issues keeping your pet because of costly cat food - please contact NBAR! They have a cat food bank for those need. read more

Stumbled across this place randomly searching for an adoptable British Shorthair, which are often mis categorized (being domestic shorthairs) so never certain what I'll find. This place had a big black beauty whom I will pick up today afternoon. :) The staff were very friendly, lots of volunteers giving affection and attention to the cats. They were very clean and professional yet down to earth. Was very positive experience. No dogs here cuz neighborhood wouldn't allow it (noise code I guess), which I found very nice for the cats. They constructed shelves infront of windows ( between rooms) so cats have something to watch while in the play area (clever). They also honor donor wishes, such as insisting that certain cats remain together. Adoption fee was $80 for male cat which is reasonable for all shots/neutering. I enjoyed my visit and highly recommend. read more

I got my second cat from NBAR, and they were kind, educated, and super helpful during this process. I was a total "newbie" when it came to adopting a cat from a rescue and they were able to guide me through the entire process. All of their cats are up to date on vaccines and are spayed/neutered prior to the adoption. They charge $150 for kittens and a little less when adopting an adult cat. I believe they also charge less if you adopt more than one. All in all, I would adopt another cat from NBAR in a heartbeat and recommend it to all my friends searching for a new cat! They also offer free nail trimming for all their "alumni" and have a food bank if you're having some trouble affording food. Such an awesome place. read more

The most terrible service. Got directed to see kittens that were already adopted. Was told specifically that a kitten in the other room was available, we went to play with said kitten, fell in love and were then told that someone had already applied to adopt him. extremely disappointed. these people don't take you seriously for these adoptions, they think you just want to come in and look. read more
