I have had an amazing experience with the crew at home grown gardens. It's a true family run business with quality plants all around. Jeff the owner is super knowledgeable about anything horticultural and really has an amazing selection. I do gardening professionally and I know a good nursery. My kids have had a great time there in the succulent section and I love the edibles. These guys did an amazing job for us. James and crew bid the job competitively, and got us scheduled pretty quickly. We had a double retaining wall installed with stairs. They carted everything in by hand, and were very methodical in the way they installed the new wall with drainage to match the design exactly of our current brick work. These guys were careful not to destroy our yard, cleaned up with hoses after each day, and asked for feedback along the way, in case tweaks were needed. read more

Canceled my yard maintenance contract right after I chose a competitor to landscape my backyard. The excuse was injured employees and one they fired. So they couldn't continue to service my yard. Just my yard not the Albany area. Pretty shady if you ask me. read more

I love this place! They have the best selections of hostas, blueberries, heucheras, fruit trees - the harder to find garden plants. They also sell bat houses which I thought was pretty cool- they encourage residents to support local wildlife. They answered a million questions I had about placement of the bat houses (directional exposure - and yes it does matter), height of placement, etc. The owner even carried my last large purchase of several plants to my car. Their plants are all robust, some a bit pricey, but I've never lost anything I've purchase from them so they sell good, healthy, proven plants. In early summer, they put out trays of multiple varieties of blueberries so you can taste them BEFORE you buy a blueberry variety - very, very cool! They have little cards next to each variety explaining what they are best used for (canning, pies, etc.). They've answered questions respectfully, patiently, and were always glad to help. They are a nice local nursery with hard to find species. Give em a try! read more

This is a well-kept secret--the best nursery in town. Amazing selection, some real bargains in large, well-grown plants. Prices are often a bit lower than I expect, and I have found even lower prices hiding out when I pick through the pots. People are nice. Layout is worth a visit just to enjoy--park-like! Nicest selection of fruit trees around, and all the plants I've gotten here have been healthy and no bugs on them - some others are very hit or miss. They have some harder to find supplies as well. Prices are average, but cheaper than other, larger, local nurseries. Frequently get new things in too. read more

I've gone here 2 times and can't get myself to buy anything from them. The first time the guy was rude and acted like I was wasting his time when I was asking questions about different types of bushes. So I thought I'd give them another try this year and looked around for about 30 mins, not one person asked if I needed help. They have a great selection and are very close to my house but I'd rather give Shonnards or Schmidts my business. read more

I love this place. The staff are consistently helpful and the plants are well cared for. If I have to buy veggie starts I prefer this place to others because the plants aren't root bound and there is a lot of selection. It's a bit higher priced than some other places, but I think the quality of the plants is worth it - you get what you pay for! read more

I frequent most of the nurseries in the area and believe Home Grown Gardens is one of the best! Their plant selection is unique, but always suited for this climate. The thing I like the most is all of their plants are well-cared for by knowledgable owners and employees. My selections from their nursery have always thrived in my garden. They also have competitive pricing (i.e. great!) as they know shoppers have to drive a bit to shop there. I am not associated in any way with Jeff and Donna, but have watched them grow this business for the last couple years. They are not a huge nursery, but that means they are on top of things. I have been buying plants at this nursery for years. What I especially like about them is that they don't constantly hover over me and keep asking me if they can help me find something. Sometimes I don't know what I'm looking for and I just like to look. Sometimes I've decided I want to plant columbines and I'll go straight to the columbines, load up the ones I want and go straight to checkout and be home planting within 30 minutes. When I was looking to plant a wall of photinias, I went to Shonnards, Garlands, Home Depot, Lowes, Jerrys and Walmart and all of their photinias were about 12" high. I went to Home Grown and they had photinias that were 3' high and wide and I bought every one they had. A nice young man helped me trundle them to my car and then helped me stuff them INTO my car and actually offered to follow me home and help me unload them. After I planted them they simply exploded and are now about 10' high and 6' wide and I've got a beautiful privacy hedge. I often find things there that I haven't been able to find anywhere else. read more
