We signed a contract for a master suite bathroom and a laundry room renovation. The total contract was $16,000. The master suite was never completed, yet he requested the final payment, which was supposed to be due only upon completion of the job. He did receive it early. He claimed he did not ask us to purchase tools. However, after reviewing the receipts following payment, we discovered that tools had in fact been purchased and we paid for them. He even returned one of the tools and exchanged it for a ladder totaling $102. We have receipts showing this from the store he purchased the tool from. The laundry room was never started. He later claimed that "extra work" he performed justified not completing the laundry room. Any so-called extras were never discussed as additional costs. He repeatedly said, "I can do that for you," but never mentioned that those items would incur additional charges. They left our home in a mess and did not clean up after themselves. He also returned lumber and kept the refund, stating we owed it to him. After paying $16,000, we have no completed bathroom and no laundry room. Unfortunately, pursuing legal action would likely cost more than what we would recover. I hope this helps others avoid the same situation.
