I came in here shortly after opening and it's definitely a local spot, very homey. They had a bunch of options (my only complaint was no maple!!) but they had cake and yeast, tons of flavors and toppings, and a bunch of great pastries. What a wonderful surprise in small town America! Homer's is two shops in one: Bakery (yum) and deli (double yum). Our first stop was the bakery, where we picked up way too many treats and justified it as breakfast for post-marathon and another two days. That counts, right? Actually, we were there on buy a coffee, get a donut free day - something we didn't know until after we bought an apple fritter, cinnamon roll, glazed cinnamon roll and a turnover, plus two coffees. Sure, give us two more donuts. What could be wrong with that? All of them were delicious - loved the turnover the most. Perfect pastry and sugar crunch. Fine, back we went for real food in the deli. Our turkey clubs came with side salads and we both had instant flashbacks to 50 years of church potlucks. This is not a bad thing. Eat a good church lady pea salad or pasta salad and you'll understand what we're saying. We also ordered a blarnie, because we'd never had one. It's homemade yellow cake, cut into a square, frosted with homemade buttercreme icing, and rolled in ground salted peanuts. It was unique and amazing. Though I've never been inside of this location - this is a popular place to stop at to bring goodies to events! Whenever I've been to social get together and ask where the sandwiches are made (as well as the cookies) they always say Sweetheart Bakery. It wasn't until recently that I discovered Homer's Deli and Sweetheart Bakery were located together, if i have this incorrect - please let me know, but it is a smart idea to have something to fill your belly with a delicious sweet treat afterwards. Recently someone went to a Christmas party and brought me sugar cookies that were made by Sweetheart Bakery. They were SO CUTE! There was a reindeer, elf, Santa, and more adorable characters on top. Never have to worry about sitting down to a messy table or finding a trash can because they remove your tray when you are done. I really don't know why there are always ridiculous lines at the Homer's portion of the store during lunchtime other than the fact that it's lunchtime. Seriously, I realize there aren't a ton of options in that part of town, but I will never understand the draw of Homer's. The sandwiches are things I could make at home for like 1/10th of the cost. Everything is just overpriced and not exceptional. Sweetheart, on the other hand, is phenomenal. The quality of their breads, cookies, pastries, doughnuts, etc. is just amazing. LOVE their frosted sugar cookies. I don't know what they put in their frosting, but it's the food equivalent of crack. So good. Great deli and bakery in good ole Clinton, Iowa. I love eating at nice deli's with a bakery, one of my favorite type of places no matter where I am at to stop in and grab a bite. So I was very happy to see a large one in my trip to Clinton, Iowa. I had the rueben, it was pretty good with the homemade bread and overall a delicious sandwich. They have a "subway" ordering system, you order at counter and they make the sandwich in front of you. It does go pretty fast so ignore the line you will see as they are quick at their craft. Also grabbed a cup or broccoli and cheese soup that was done right, not the bright yellow soup you may see but the real kind. Now for the main event, please try their frosted cookies!!! Delicious no-frills egg salad sandwich, wide variety of condiments and toppings on FRESH bread. Decadently delicious lemon merengue pie with a really nice tartness and flaky crust. The soup is from scratch and a cup was plenty. The staff didn't bat an eyelash at my request for a cup of water with lemon, and gave me two wedges that weren't skimpy.
