The place is practically on the Mississippi River on the Il side across from Clinton Ia were I was hanging out. The place really sticks out from the neighborhood because it's red and black against a pale back drop. The place was smaller than it looked but it was packed with goodies from fresh meats, cheeses, sausages etc with a frozen side filled with homemade and not homemade items to cook at home. One thing that I always look for is the homemade meat sticks and anything jalapeño or hot will be my first choice, they had jalapeño and cheddar. I'm always bitching that if I want a real chicken fried steak I have to make it my self because virtually no one does because there the frozen crap, they have a homemade take home package of 4 that I snapped up but have yet to cook. The jalapeño and cheddar sticks were so on point with nice chunks of cheddar and jalapeños, dam I only bought one package. The take and cook country fried steak package finally got its turn and I must say that it was the best prepared take home frozen country fried steak I have had. They cook super fast and have a tasty crunchy batter with a tender moist center to my surprise. I'm really starting to hate my take a cooler while traveling to bring home items that I can't get where I live because there is great stuff out there and I'm probably never going to get them again because every trip is different. I would really like to come this way again and stop here so I could grab some more items. All in all this was another great county meat market that does what it does well and the whole reason that I now search them out when I'm away from home. I would definitely be a regular if I lived in the area and recommend stopping by if your in the area.

The food was mediocre, menu selection has changed, and the service was poor, and the quaint ambiance is gone (they use to have nice artwork on the walls; now nothing). They had the menus printed on paper placemats (or we thought they were placemats), but they took them back when we ordered. They reuse these???? The menu has changed and not for the good. They had wonderful egg salad sandwiches, and don't even offer it anymore. At least they still had gluten-free bread. None of us enjoyed the food. The service was poor. Our wait staff knew nothing about the menu and couldn't answer any of our questions. We had to ask for items multiple times before she brought things to us (e.g., a glass of water). How sad that what was once a quaint wonderful place to eat, is no longer a place I can recommend.

We walked in around 11:30 a.m. There was only one other customer (a dad and his son) and the person who walked in just before us, who appeared to either be a friend or a regular, based on how all three employees greeted her. While they were extremely friendly to her, we weren't acknowledged at all--not even a simple "We'll be right with you." Instead, the employees stood there for more than five minutes talking about how business was, how they slept, what they did over the weekend, melatonin, and other personal topics. During that time, no one took our order or made any effort to help us. After waiting, I finally said, "If you guys are going to keep having a conversation, can we at least order our coffee and get that started?" They looked at me like I had said something unreasonable. One employee, who was sitting at a table near the counter coloring, muttered something under her breath, and they still didn't take our order. Instead, they continued their conversation. At that point, we left. This experience was completely unacceptable. Great customer service starts with acknowledging people when they walk through the door, especially when your shop is nearly empty. Unfortunately, this first impression ensured we won't be back, and I can't recommend this business to others.
