I ordered hardwood flooring in February to match my current flooring for a kitchen remodel. My contract said I would get a random assortment of 2' - 8' length planks 4-4 1/2 weeks from payment and approved shop drawings. I was told that they are running late. I had to delay the cabinet maker and the contractor for an additional 8 weeks beyond the 4-4 1/2 weeks on my contract. I finally received my flooring on April 27th. There were no 8' lengths. None. Not a single one. I contacted Homestead Hardwoods to let them know that I was missing the 8' lengths in the order, and they told me that I have the entire order and that they didn't promise 8' lengths because it says "random" and random may or may not include it. I suppose I should be relieved because with that thinking I could have received all 2' lengths. I think I received the 500 sq feet I ordered, but all in smaller pieces between 2-7', which looks quite different from the floor I am trying to match. Emily, the owner's daughter agreed that she also thought if it said 2'-8' that I should have received at least some 8' planks. She sounded like she was going to make good on the contract and send me the missing 8' lengths, but instead, I received an order form for 8' lengths with a higher price than when I ordered the 2-8' lengths in February. She offered to pay for the shipping and crating, which I appreciate, but wants to charge me today's rate for lumber that I already expected to have from the original order. Today's price is now 36% more than when I actually ordered the 8' planks. I'm willing to pay for the shipping and handling, but I'm not placing a new order, and at a higher rate for something I already ordered and didn't get. Even if they pay for the shipping and handling, it's still more expensive than when I ordered in February. Over $6400 later, I think I'm done with this company and I'm pretty sad about it. I love supporting family businesses, but this experience tells me that they do not honor a good faith agreement. A word of advice: do not allow them to write the word "random" on your agreement. For this company it means that you get what you get, and you don't throw a fit. Another life lesson learned. It's just one more foot in length, so maybe it's not that big of a deal? I'm mostly sad that I didn't get what I thought I paid for. Is the wood nice, you ask? Yes, it's nice. It wasn't exactly the same thickness as my original wood so there's a big 'old bump, and the lengths are much shorter than my original floor as I mentioned. We need to adjust our plan because of it, but it is nice enough and this is the only company that tries to match my flooring, which was discontinued in the 80's. Do these folks keep you updated on your order? Not really, but eventually they will email you if you call a few times. read more

I can't speak highly enough of John and Deb. A few years ago, I decided to install all new door hardware for my entire house remodel. It was out of my budget but the hardware was solid and quality (a far cry from the junk at the local box stores). I wanted the good stuff. I shopped around a little, but I decided on Homestead Hardware because of his service. John was patient and helpful. Answered all my questions and taught me a lot about hardware. I received my order fast and 100% correct. Fast-forward a few years. All my hardware works flawlessly except one knob. I contacted John to see if he could help. Without any questions, John offered a replacement under warranty. Best yet... since it was my garage door... John sent me the new handle first and allowed me plenty of time to remove the broken one and send it back. And he sent a pre-paid shipping label. I will always get my hardware from them. For remodeling part of our home, I wanted solid wood doors that did not cost a bundle. Homestead Hardwoods has a great selection of designs and a useful website. Friendly company staff game me good answers and even helped me figure out how to save more money. I bought five Mission style oak veneer doors with solid pine core, and one door with a full glass panel. Instead of ordering custom sizes, I bought in-stock standard sizes. Our contractor trimmed down some of the doors to fit odd size openings. We stained and sealed onsite. The results are beautiful, and every visitor comments on how great the doors look. Why solid wood? They look far better than the hollow doors in most homes. They feel substantial when you open and close them. These doors also do an amazing job of soundproofing. They shut out nearly all noise, even when HVAC, dehumidifier, and washing machine are running at the same time. The company asked for a 50% deposit with my order. The doors arrived on schedule via freight truck (the driver worked hard, and I gave him a tip). Because solid doors are heavy, they are not shipped prehung; instead, the frames, etc., were enclosed with the doors. Everything was packed incredibly well. I now plan to replace all other doors in my home with merchandise from Homestead Hardwoods. Some doors are made in the U.S., some elsewhere, including China. Just ask. This company is accredited with the Better Business Bureau and has an A+ rating from the BBB (spring 2012). Based on my experience, from selection to living with the finished doors, the rating is well deserved. read more

Over the past couple of months I have placed several orders with this business...8 Emtek doorknobs, one deadbolt, address numbers and hinges. I did have issues with a couple of the doorknobs, but their customer service is amAzing. My emails were answered promptly, and John Gray was able to solve all of my problems easily. And I would just like to say how nice it is to deal with a REAL human being -- and a nice one at that! I have nothing but good things to say about this company. If you need any kind of door hardware (or doors -- I think they sell those, too!) you should not hesitate to order from this company. You just don't get this kind of customer support these days. I found their site looking for design drawings to show to my wife for doors I planned to make myself. When we selected one, we looked at the rest of their site, and found that they would build doors of the quality we wanted for mot much more than the cost of the lumber around here, if I built them myself. They were a pleasure to work with, meticulous and responsive. The doors arrived within the time frame promised, and the shipping was excellent; well carted, carefully packed and cushioned. The jambs were well marked for the appropriate doors, so the preying option saved a ton of time. The hardware (Emtek) we ordered was also well packaged and as we had ordered. Very happy with them. The only thing stopping us from using them again, is that our doors will likely be around longer than we will. read more

First of all, buying something as expensive to ship as doors from anyone other than a local company is a really bad idea. Shame on me. The doors showed up damaged and the door company and the freight company pointed the finger at each other and left me screwed. The doors that did make it intact were garbage. Even the "high end" ones. The poplar doors delaminated (crappy Chinese plywood anyone ?) after aplication of OIL BASED primer. When I called they told me, " You should have told us you were going to paint them. We would have used a different adhesive." Who doesn' paint poplar doors? Now I have all this labor invested in the surviving doors. When I asked for my money back, they sent me a legal agreement: double spaced lawyereese. Think they have been through this before. The mission oak doors were disappointing as well. They are assembled with screws, and rather than veneer over the plugs, they are visible. Do yourself a favor. Stay away from Homestead Doors. read more

I hope that this place actually exists. They don't seem to know how to run a web based business. We were in need of a sheet of teak and holly plywood for a bar we are building. Shipping from most providers was more than the plywood! We decided to stop at Homestead on our way home to Wisconsin from a trip to Upstate New York. The place is as charming as you can imagine! Red barns, farm house with a vegetable garden, kittens rough housing in the yard and a miniature horse in the back barn! Everything as neat as a pin! Best of all, we drove in and asked Mike for the plywood to be custom cut, which he was happy to do, and were in and out in less than 30 minutes! We saved over $300 and had a lovely stop! read more
