This place may be called the Hometown Diner but the food is unlike any other diner you have been to! It is unique, flavourful and worth coming back for (we went twice in the three days we were in the city!) The service was amazing! They are hopping busy but so friendly and willing to explain the menu item. The owners are all about locally sourcing the food so the perogies and sausages are handmade in the province! And they are passionate about making good food - there is nothing bad on the menu. The vibe is an upscale diner. Easy going and somewhere you will want to come back to. The atmosphere is casual and kind of hipster-ish cool but is welcoming to all walks of life. I saw young adults wearing artsy fashion styles and groups of families eating with their kids. California always gushes about the avocado toast and I was finally able to try it here at Hometown Diner! It was delicious. This version had a bit too much lime or lemon juice on it for my tastebuds but it was still appetizing. It is called the Avotoast. Went there for Sunday brunch and loved the vibe of this place. It has a young cafe vibe, just exactly what we were looking for to get away from the cold dull weather. We ordered the Salmon Benny, Huevos Rancheros, and Very Berry Waffle. All the dishes were delicious and the poached eggs were prepared perfectly. In a word- fabulous. Loved everything about this place- the ambience, the staff and, of course, the food. Stumbled upon the Hometown Diner while looking to fill some time and an empty belly during a family event on a Friday morning. Although we arrived at 9:30, the place was full with a 20 minute wait. This is usually not the greatest of beginnings for me but we went next door to Prism Coffee and drank some of the best lattes we have ever had and the time just flew by. When we were seated we had an opportunity to speak to the owner of the restaurant, Cara, who told us of their passion for food and how they traveled around sampling the restaurant fare of other cities to measure the pulse of the food scene in various places. It was a fascinating conversation and we followed one her recommendation for breakfast, the Greek Eggs Benny. This was delicious with a perfectly poached egg, hollandaise, spinach, shallots, tomatoes and feta served with hash browns that reminded me of refried smashed potatoes. We also had the chicken and waffles which came covered in peppered maple bacon and was the perfect mix of salty, sweet, savoury and spicy. My favourite brunch place in the city. Giving it 4-stars because of the two times that I've ordered their chicken and waffles and both times the chicken came out burnt and very dry. So I decided to maybe not order anything else for a while and just stick to my tried and tested, the Scrambler. It's so good. The restaurant's aesthetic is a win for me. Over priced brunch style place. The food is average. It is hard to mess up with egg, bacon and hash brown. Avocado toast is surprisingly small. One slice bread, some avocado, two slices of tomato, an egg = $10?? Coffee and tea are expensive here. Ask the price before you order anything to drink. I had better food at lower price in the same style of restaurant in Vancouver B.C. I guess the cost here is higher than in the big cities. 3 stars is for the food. 5 stars for the clean environment, especially the washroom. This is a place for people wanting the "style" not the food. You cannot expect having conversations in this restaurant. I've always been a fan of local diners and restaurants, so when I saw Hometown I knew I had to check it out... and I wasn't disappointed! I've tried almost everything on the menu and everything has been delicious. I especially like their chicken and waffles, and the poutine. Their donuts are also worth it. I will say that their orange juice is quite pricey for the size drink you get, but regardless it still tastes good. Highly recommend! read more

The atmosphere here is excellent! Very unique and a cool place to meet for a meal. Great service and friendly staff made the hospitality stand out. The menu had good options and we appreciated how they highlighted the local businesses that they get food from. Food wise we had the Heuvos rancheros and steak and eggs. The eggs had a deep colour and were very tasty. The Heuvos had a good portion size and were delicious. The steak came presliced (interesting choice) and the side of greens were more of a garnish then a side. (3 pieces of lettuce and a tomato ). But the toast and meal were satisfying. You pay for the quality of the place and we have to say that the low light was that the coffee was fairly watery and a bit of a let down but it could have been the pot that day. The area in which it's located isn't the best, but once you step inside it's super cute, and gives a very earthy and modern vibe. The staff is very laid back and welcoming! Had great music playing while we were there, but kind of hard to hear conversation without having to raise your voice. I wasn't sure about this place because of its location but after visiting it is officially one of my favorite breakfast places. The food is always great, the staff are all friendly and they have homemade donuts! What more do you need! We try to visit at least once a month. A little on the smaller side - we have a baby and the booths are usually always taken and their highchair clips to the table so you need a booth, sometimes the wait is a little longer because of that. I won't take a star away from it for that reason though. This place is great! read more
