I brought my 2022 Honda Odyssey on June 22 to Honda of Ames for regular maintenance. When I arrived, I met with a Service Advisor and clearly requested an oil change and Service A137, which includes: A: Oil change 1: Tire rotation 3: Transmission fluid replacement 7: Brake fluid replacement Later that day, at approximately 3:25 p.m., I received a text message indicating that additional services were recommended following inspection. When I opened the link, it unexpectedly showed: "All services declined (1 of 1 services declined)." Assuming this could be clarified in person, I went back to the service center. Upon arrival, I was informed that my vehicle was still being serviced and that I needed to wait 10-15 minutes. After about 10 minutes, the Service Advisor presented me with a bill totaling $760.64. Knowing that the transmission service alone costs over $500, I paid the bill at the time without much thinking as I needed to pick up my kids. However, after reviewing the invoice carefully at home, I identified several concerning issues: 1. Unauthorized Add-On Services The invoice includes three additional services that I did not request and that are not part of Service A137: Premium engine oil condition ($50) Engine crankcase cleaning service ($50) Ethanol fuel system corrosion prevention kit ($75) 2. Incomplete Requested Services I do not see evidence that the following requested services were performed: Tire rotation (Code 1) Brake fluid replacement (Code 7) 3. Lack of Authorization Most importantly, I was never given the opportunity to approve or decline the additional recommended services. By the time I received the text message, it appears that decisions had already been made and services had already been initiated without my consent. I am very concerned about how these additional services were authorized and why the requested services were not fully completed. I contacted them on the same day and followed up again the next day. I was transferred to the service manager's voicemail and left a message. [Update] The service manager called me the next day and offered to do the tire rotation and brake fluid replacement free of charge. read more

Very prompt in getting my car brought in but didn't mention pricing until after getting papers signed. Standard oil change and rotation came out to 173 with tax. My local Honda dealer out of Mason city does it for a 3rd of the price with much better attitude. Ames Honda found a nail in the tire and offered to patch it for another $100+ when big O charges $35. Not pleasant people unless your willing to get spread open for pricing. read more

Honda Of Ames is fairly incompetent even with performing routine maintenance, but that's not even the biggest problem, the real issue is that they do not even have the courtesy to communicate to you that they are struggling with fixing the issue and need to keep your vehicle overnight and into the next day. They just leave you hanging; they'll keep your vehicle overnight without telling you they're going to do so. God forbid that you have plans that require you to be in possession of your vehicle - you won't be able to do what you need to do, because Honda has kept your car and didn't even tell you that they were going to do so. read more

I spent over $35,000. This was the first time dealing with the Honda in Ames, instead of Des Moines, and will be my last. At first, I thought my experience may be was a fluke, until I found out my coworker's son had almost the same thing happen to him about a year or two ago. I was told the morning of me signing papers, that my car would no longer come with the Honda warranty, like originally advertised. The $27,000 listed price stayed the same, and I ended up purchasing a separate warranty for $3000. When test driving the car, I was told it had not been touched, but come pick up, its going to look "amazing". However, come pick up, it was far from. I was initially being talked to like my concerns were not a big deal, and that it's a used car, so things wouldn't be "perfect". The trunk quite literally looked like a bear had been back there with deep scratches and scuffs everywhere. The ceiling fabric had stains, the interior looked like it had been wiped with a rag, there was gunk and dust in my air vents, center council, door handle, ect. Streaks on the odometer screen and review mirror. I was told how many of the stains could be taken off away right there with some Windex and how, "Oh I know what that is, it's ketchup." (on the ceiling) A new to me car, from a certified Honda dealership, should not be looking like this. The outside had some dings, deep scratches, and paint chip on the side. After continuing to point things out, I am told that they "Normally don't do these things until they know the car is sold anyway," which doesn't make sense to me, as all cars at a dealership are cleaned to pristine condition in order to sell quick on the lots. Mind you, I said I wanted this car 5 days prior, and was told to give them two days to get everything up to warranty expectations. Anyways, after explaining I just spent $35,000 on this car, I should not have to personally take Windex to clean the ketchup off the ceiling and clean the interior myself, they offer me a WE OWE YOU, to bring the car in and do some "touch ups." They said they do not have detailers on site, and they come in on the weekends. This car was most definitely not professionally detailed the weekend prior to me picking up the car. They were very helpful on getting me financed without a cosigner, however, had to run my credit twice, to multiple credit unions, due to an error on their end with the type of car I needed financed for. read more

Visited this dealership twice. Once was back in 2016, and the second time was less than a month ago. Both times I was shopping for a car for my elder mother. Since my experience was similar both times, I thought I would include both. 2016: My father has passed and were looking to purchase a smaller car for my mother. We found a vehicle that would work and were inside starting the purchase process. The salesperson helping us constantly had to leave to "check on something" regarding the purchase contract. After more than three hours and no completed purchase we left. August 2024: Extremely impatient salesperson. We were looking at a replacement vehicle, again for my elder mother. The salesperson was extremely pushy regarding the sale. Every question ended with "what do you think?" or "should I start the paperwork?". We eventually left. I can't believe this place still exists in 2023. Meaning, when you have terrible service and are exorbitantly expensive, how can you stay in business? I can't recommend strongly enough that you never go here. My story is short - my AC was acting up - probably needed some Freon. 4 hours later I was told "you need more Freon." You don't say?! 1 hour and FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS later, my car was slightly cooler than before. I don't get flustered easily, but this experience was infuriating. Again, avoid at all costs. read more

I bought a 2016 Explorer from them back in February after my car got totaled. To say in disapointed is an understatement. They sold me a car with no air conditioning and that's just the start. I've had to replace all four tires, all four brakes, all of fluids (transmission, coolant, brake, etc.), replace a sensor because my cruise control would randomly shut off or not even turn on, my windshield leaks when I go through the carwash, and now my battery and fuel pump need replaced. When I called the dealership to talk about everything, they only offered me $10K for my car. I have purchased three brand new cars, two certified cars, and two used cars from various dealerships over the past ten years - and I visited dozens more before landing on the car I wanted. My two experiences with Honda dealerships were, by far, the worst. The first experience was not about this dealership, but one in Des Moines. I had already been offered zero percent financing at Toyota, but I genuinely wanted a Honda. When the salesman offered me 8%, I told him I was getting zero at Toyota. He literally laughed at me and said, "There's no way with your credit that you're getting zero percent." I walked out of the office and immediately purchased my car at zero percent. Great car. This past weekend, Honda of Ames was having a zero percent financing deal on USED cars, which is unheard of. The Thursday before the deal, I inquired about a 2017 Nissan Rogue and a salesman (whom I will allow to remain anonymous) called me back and said it was included in the deal. I emailed him information about my trade in and what I was looking for and made an appointment for Saturday morning. He informed me that he would have the car pulled up and ready to go. Twenty minutes before our appointment he called stating that the Nissan was not even on the lot - it was still in transit. I was frustrated, but he ensured me that we could test drive a comparable vehicle and move forward with the paperwork if I was comfortable. When we arrived, the vehicle was not ready. He spent 20-25 minutes walking around the lot, trying to find the 2017 (that should have been pulled up before we ever arrived), but ultimately let us drive a brand new 2020 to test drive, which isn't the same. Instead of having our vehicle looked at and appraised during all of this time, he waited to have someone look at it afterwards, while we were sitting at his desk, which took another 45 minutes. At this point, my husband was getting frustrated. They came back with a trade in offer for our car that was 1,000 less than McKee's in Des Moines (who had already appraised our car) and 1,500 less than another offer from a dealership who had seen pictures of all areas of concern. By the time they tried to add on all of the high pressure coverages, the $18,000 used car had a $28,000 price tag. At this point, my husband became curt and brought up how frustrating this entire experience has been. The salesman started arguing with him, and I was over the entire experience. He insinuated that other dealerships wouldn't offer more than they were and started picking apart our argument. It moved past "aggressive" and into "hostile." I explained what my bottom line was, and let him know that my husband and I were going to go to lunch, and he could call me if they were able to come to an agreement. He wanted us to stay and wait, but after several minutes, we decided to go to lunch. He followed us out to our car and said that we could still make it happen, but his offer was still no where close. I explained that my husband and I needed some space and an opportunity to talk and told him to give us a call if he was able to come up with a better deal. He walked off, obviously upset. A few minutes later, he called with another offer that was no where close to what I said I could afford/was willing to pay. He rudely quipped, "Oh, well, I guess I misheard you since you drove off as I was trying to speak with you," and hung up on me. At that point I text him back and told him he could stop all negotiations because we would not be giving him our business even if he was able to meet our price. Not only was he the one who walked away frustrated as we were speaking, but I was hung up on. I understand sales techniques. As annoying as they are, they are a part of the job. But our experiences at two different Honda dealerships were so far from experiences I have had with Toyota, Dodge, Nissan, and smaller companies that I cannot comprehend how they continue to get high ratings. read more

Do not take your vehicle here is you have a student at ISU. My daughter took our Honda Pilot in for servicing because of a noise it was making which she has no mechanical knowledge, but was looking for help. I was providing her instruction on what to ask the service dept and she was relaying my questions to them. Apparently this annoyed the service advisor who said behind my daughters back that "someone has Daddy issues." He then continues to talk about me and my questions to other service managers where other customers could here. They made her feel so uncomfortable she hid in the dealership bathroom until her Uber showed up. Don't expect Lithia Honda to help your son or daughter if they are away at ISU! As for the repair, which was a timing, they charged $1575 and the service advisor said they use certified Honda parts. I thought that was expensive so I called the Honda dealership where we bought the vehicle and they send a quote with "certified Honda parts" and they were 25% lower. Lithia did match the price quote which was fine. However, a week later we had to have the vehicle towed back to Lithia because they placed a used bolt back on the pully which broke and caused my daughter to loose steering and power on a 2-lane highway with 4 other people in the vehicle. If I pay $662 for a certified mechanic & certified Honda parts I would expect them to replace a $2 bolt. read more

I am in the market for 2023 Pilot to replace the 2018 Pilot that my wife has driven since new. Stopped here between visits at the Honda dealer in Mason City and the Honda dealer in Clive. These guys threw me a $3500 better deal than my formerly-preferred dealer (three new truck purchases in the past five years) and I was straight with these folks that I had an app't at the Clive Honda dealer shortly thereafter, assuring them that I would let them know before day's end. After that meeting with the Clive dealer, I called Honda of Ames to tell them they had a deal, only to be told that they could not honor their deal unless I bought $2300 worth of ADP (additional dealer profit) items ($500 floor mats and $1800 worth of "interior and exterior protection"). I declined. They came back offering "only" $1300 in ADP, which I also declined. Total waste of time talking to these folks. The truck looked great (wait for it)...Once my transaction was complete, and I went home, they sent me emails of all of my documents containing both my wife and my personally identifiable information unencrypted and in the clear. Then, a few days into owning the vehicle I noted a crack in the windshield that started low near the hood in an easy to miss spot and started walking its way across the whole windshield. When I reported the issue, the response was sorry about leaking all of your information to every identity thief on the Internet - and sorry we're not going to work with you on the windshield. On top of all the issues I had with the rear end shake and getting my car back after 2-3 months.... and having to drive 2 hours back to the dealership after they SOLD the rental that they gave me.... Now years later, I find out that the "full synthetic" oil change package I purchased, is only a standard synthetic blend. Not only have I been lied to about it, the stickers Lithia has been putting on my vehicle have marked that it's "Full Synthetic " since I've purchased my car. We purchased our 4th car from Honda of Ames (a 2024 Civic EXL hatchback) this weekend. Everyone we worked with did a fantastic job. Let's name some names so I can give well deserved accolades: Aaron Warren worked hard to get us the best APR available and the paperwork process was incredibly smooth. Jon Ballard was our contact person in the initial process and did very well in explaining his role and how he could help me with my trade. Then Cam Evans was the sales associate we worked with. He's very personable, professional, and most importantly, not pushy. This is the 4th Civic I have owned, going all the way back to 1984 when I purchased a new Civic S hatchback for 6800 bucks. No Civic has ever disappointed me and I am looking forward to many years of trouble free driving. When my daughter and I leased a Honda 3 years ago, the process was pretty smooth and easy. However, now that we want to purchase the leased vehicle it's been impossible to get a simple purchase quote to give to our credit union. I left 6 messages, one was with the general manager with no response for over nearly 2 weeks. Our salesman finally responded indicating someone from finance would call me back. we went to the dealership on a Saturday, picked out a car we wanted, test drive, apply for financing, etc. the bank was closed, so we had to wait until Monday to find out if we were approved. Monday afternoon, the salesman calls and says "we got you approved" great, so we make an appointment for Monday night assuming we're just basically there to "sign and go". we get there, find out we were approved for not the car we had picked out, but another one. Car was fine, but NO ONE TOLD US about it being for a different car until we got there. had we known this ahead of time, we could have found childcare, rather than bringing kids to what we thought was going to be a quick appointment, brought someone who is knowledgeable about cars with us to test drive a second car, discuss the affordability of a completely different payment, etc. left the dealership in tears I was so thrown for a loop. read more

A series of repairs on my 2008 CRV took my trust levels from 100% to 0% over the course of a year. I had my vehicle serviced regularly. A year ago when the engine seized I was shown a phone picture of a broken timing chain and told that it was the cause of the engine running out of oil. No, that ain't how it works. The engine lost it's oil after the last oil change, seized, THEN the timing chain broke. $4500.00. More recently(a month ago) i paid over $1000.00 for exhaust "repairs" and the problem is worse now than when I took it in. The service paradigm has shifted drastically. They are far more concerned with lightening my wallet than with making sure I have reliable transportation. read more

I would not recommend Honda of Ames to anyone. I chose to purchase my car here because I have a disability that makes it difficult to talk on the phone, and in my research found that I would be able to discuss the purchasing and details beforehand via text message, and also had the ability to schedule service online via the website. After they finally agreed to bring in a new Honda Fit in the color I was requesting, I was told to come in and it would take about a half an hour. It took 5 hours. The over friendly salesman that I had been talking to via text assured me that he would check with me the following week to make sure everything was satisfactory. I have never heard from him again. I was talked into purchasing the lifetime service plan with free oil changes. I was told that could stop whenever I was in town (I live 2 hours away) and they would take care of it. I asked if I should make an appointment and was told that I can, but its not necessary. So, the first time I needed one, I stopped in and was treated very rudely because I didn't have an appointment. I had to wait 2 hours before my car was ready. While sitting in the waiting area we had to listen to a salesman swearing and cursing the whole time. Very unprofessional. The following times I have made an appointment online with nothing but problems. One of the questions it ask is how you want to be contacted. I of course always choose via email. This has yet to happen. I've been told via voicemail that the website "wasn't working correctly" and the appointment I chose wasn't really available. Or they call me and want me to call back to make my appointment. I would have called and made my appointment in the first place if it wasn't a problem. I have talked to someone via the online chat (who doesn't know anything about the company, its just an answering service), and I have also sent an email via the "contact us" link on their website explaining my issue, and no one will reply to me. read more

I purchased a used car on 5/27/2021 from Honda of Ames. I am a first-time car buyer not knowing what to fully expect. My temporary tags are set to expire soon so I went down to the treasurer's office to register the car. They had told me the dealership hadn't sent in any of the paperwork and to give the dealership a call. I ended up calling the dealership several times to speak with the salesman Dan Lowe who sold me the car and left two messages. After not hearing back I called for a third time that day and asked to speak with someone who could help. I was transferred to the title clerk Tracy. Tracy let me know that Dan was to call me after my first message that I left that morning. She then informed me that they sold me a car they do not have the title to. She told me she would make this a top priority tomorrow and we would be in touch. After not hearing from Tracy the next day I gave her a call at noon, she didn't sound happy I was calling, she let me know that she has things to do every morning and she would call later in the day. I am currently waiting on phone calls and waiting for this situation to be resolved. I have yet to hear from Dan. They never disclosed to me the day I went to look and purchase the car that they didn't have a title to the vehicle. I also asked about extending the date on my temporary tags as they are to expire soon and them selling me a car they don't have a title to is out of my control. I was told that is something they can't do. They should have never had the car up for sale if they did not have the title. This is in fact illegal. I had previously applied for a loan through my bank. I told Dan Lowe (the salesman) that and after deciding I would like to buy the car Dan mentioned the finance department would push for us to finance thru them. Dan said to let them know we have family at the bank and that's why we are going thru them. We ended up working with Aaron Warren he did push us financing with them almost to the point I was uncomfortable and ready to leave with no car. He wouldn't drop it. He would ask well who in the family works there, what position do they hold, is family really that important and would go on and on. I also had to put in a new battery on 6/21/2021 not one month after buying the car after being told it was in great condition and taken care of. They also stated they would have the car cleaned while we were in the finance department filling out the paperwork and the car never moved and was not cleaned before leaving. read more

My husband and I bought a used car here in 2014. We were excited to purchase the car and we're willing to work with the sales person. However, closing on the car took over two hours! The sales person who sold us the car sat with us in one room and spent 30 minutes trying to sell us upgrades and extended warranties. We told him no very clearly 4 different times. From there, we were walked to another building in the snow and ice where their financial guy tried to sell us the same crap. We were paying for the car in cash and he acted suspicious of our payment. Over the last few years, we've gotten "personal" letters from Honda of Ames asking to buy our car back. All we would need to do is contact the sales department. No way. My husband and I recently purchased a new Honda Fit here. This was my husband's second time purchasing a car from here and my first time. The experience was not exactly pleasant but not horrible either. Our salesman was great, but the day we went to pick up the car we had to sit and wait for almost 2 hours before we were even helped. The guy who we filled out the paperwork with was also annoyingly pushy about trying to get us to sign up for their service of "free" oil changes for as long as you own the vehicle for $500. He continued to try to push the service on us even after we had told him no twice. We were also told that the car had only 15 miles on it but when I got in I noticed it had 125 on it. Not a huge deal but their service could be a little more polished to prevent these small inconveniences from happening. On the other hand we have been very satisfied with the car! read more

We have purchased three vehicles from Honda of Ames because we are long-time lovers of Honda and think they make the best vehicles around. However, after three negative experiences, we will either be looking in Des Moines for our next Honda or switching over to Toyota. The dealership has made a mistake in each of our three vehicle purchases -- most recently, they sold us a vehicle with a lien on the title and then didn't tell us when they realized. It wasn't until I called the county because our license plates hadn't come that the county told me the title had a lien on it and the dealership had been informed three weeks earlier. No one ever called us. It was sorted out eventually, but only due to our persistence in calling and calling and calling the dealership to resolve it. We definitely will not be back. read more

Don't even think of stopping at this dealership for anything. They wouldn't know what customer service is if it landed on their lap. Extensive and unnecessary wait times. Sold us a car that literally had the check engine light come on in 24 hours. Agreed with signing of paperwork to fix the broken windshield that had a crack and a chip and pop dents out. That took a ton of calls to have them uphold the agreement. only to finally make arrangements to finish their agreement with a 9-10 appointment and have us wait all day car still sitting at 2pm. Had massive transmission leak.. gave them all the seals to fix the problem... They SAID they fixed the problem and "replaced ALL included seals" just to notice a month later the leak was STILL there and worse then ever. After informing them and talking to them recently I was informed the bad seal.. that was the CAUSE of the problem was NOT replaced..they said the other ones were though. I told them I went through multiple mechanics for this problem and no one wanted to even try and fix it but Honda ASSURED me they could replace it AND told me they did...soo is lying about services preformed just common practice for yall over at honda or what? I lost my new job I just started last week in Des Moines because I started thinking "I had reliable transportation" but now I dont.. and was forced to leave my new job because they currently have no estimated time for me to expect my car to be fixed OR if they are even CAPABLE of fixing it. I give one star because the scale doesnt go any lower... if the scale WAS -5 to +5 id give a negative 5. Terrible experience, I own a Honda and an Acura and you better believe after this incident this is the first AND last time I will ever go to a honda dealership again. read more

I saw the vehicle I purchased online, but did not call for over a week to see if they still had it. To my surprise their website was up to date and the vehicle was still for sale. Since I live in Des Moines I ended up going to see the 06 Durango on a Friday afternoon/evening. I didn't think I would be driving home in my new to me Durango since it was after 4pm and they close at 6! Wayde the salesman was helpful and considerate, while being discreet and honest. In the end I drove home well after 6pm in my new vehicle. I got an excellent price, great financing and a vehicle that I am extremely happy with! read more

One would think a "special ePrice" would be lower than the advertised price. Right? Nope..."uh...sorry there is no ePrice for this particular vehicle. Not all vehicles have them here." Bait and switch. The salesman and sales manager would not budge 1 penny below the asking price. The Carfax showed the vehicle was recently purchased from an auto auction. They only had the vehicle in their inventory for 2 weeks and clearly should have had room to lower their price. They would not negotiate at all. Advertising a "special email price" only to find out there isn't one is a dishonest marketing practice and unprofessional. My salesman apologized and said the sales staff has asked management to stop this practice. Clearly this was not an isolated incident. Simply don't list an ePrice option if there isn't one on a vehicle. Advertise "one price" or "no haggle" if that is going to be your practice. Be honest with people. read more

Terrible experience, twice! Good price, the salesman could care less if we bought from them. The business office didn't listen and insisted on running the loan through the wrong bank even though I told them ahead of time which I wanted to use. read more

I bought a used Subaru outback from them in the spring. I am a single,senior citizen,female. I was talked into the oil change package. The car looked beautiful. Right after I purchased the car the front and rear end needed alignment. It is a few months later and the rear end wheel bearings need to be replaced. The car has been a money pit since I got it. All the paint repairs they did are coming off. My friend who purchased a used car from them too, is having the same issues with the paint coming off. I was in an accident & needed a new car. Honda Of Des Moines whom i usually shop through, didn't have the car I wanted. I found it at Honda Of Ames. I didn't have issues until the loan portion of the purchase. On my prior car, I had a bank I had a loan through that i wanted to stick with. I let the sales person know this MULTIPLE TIMES. When it came down to payment, the loan specialist had me waiting over 2 hours. After two hours, he came out to talk with me about possible banks & that i'd have to drive back to Ames from Ankeny the next day to purchase all because the first sales person, didnt listen to my voicing of bank choice. The loan specialist asked me why i had him looking at other banks. I explained i told the sales person from the beginning what i wanted & was not listened too. I have decided recently i'm not a huge fan of my purchase & decided to talk to Honda Of Des Moines about trade in, only to find out that my brand new car had previously been IN AN ACCIDENT WITH AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT & never ONCE was i let know of this. Now my VIN will show the accident, causing issues with me ever being able to sell it all because of the lack of communication between myself & the dealership. I'm not happy to say the least. read more

The car salesman Lee kept hounding and hounding us and when we told him we got a better price elsewhere, he hounded us some more. Don't give them your contact info if you value your privacy and sanity. Also, Lee did not wear a seatbelt during out test drive. read more
