Smithtown Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care - When I ask for my family I'm told the choice is nonexistent. They always have a PB&J.

My mother stayed at Smithtown Center for a year and a half as a dementia patient and later, a…read morecomfort care (end of life care) patient. The staff always kept me well-informed about my mother's health. This is key for families of dementia patients. For this kind of care, it's the staff that matters most. The key players are the unit coordinators, and we had great ones: Kelly and Jenna. Both were very patient and attentive. Jenna eventually felt like a friend of the family. She took a personal interest, and went above and beyond to resolve issues in my mother's care along the way. I was there constantly during one period of time, and really saw how things work. I was amazed at the quality and number of people involved in my mother's care. Besides the coordinators, I was very impressed by Supervisor Marilyn; NP Liz; Night nurse Christen; Med nurses Garcelle, Angie, and Danielle; Aides Carline and Christia; OT/PT's Gary, Pierre, and Jennifer; Speech therapist Ann-Marie (regarding chewing/swallowing); Social Worker Donna; Recreation assistant Jennifer (who helped me Facetime with my mother when I couldn't visit); and Violetta (who *tirelessly* kept the whole unit clean). Pretty much everyone really knew my mother and the details of her care! My mother REALLY did not like taking medicines, etc., but the team displayed some amazing skills in gently getting her to cooperate. The comfort care period here went much better than home hospice care would have. The team took care of all medications, cleaning, laundry, and other tasks so I could just be there for my mother emotionally. In all, Smithtown Center is staffed by a large team of very nice people who were very helpful to my mother and me. Thanks, Smithtown Center! One last thing is, that in comparing notes with others, I learned that Medicaid patients got the same, high quality level of care as the self-pay patients.

The always present Sophia was on top of any medical needs my husband had and always available for questions and concerns. The nursing assistants work very hard. Thank you to Rose (wonderful), Lisa and Amanda. I cannot forget to praise physical therapist, Joon and occupational therapist Jackie. They were so kind and patient with my husband. The food was very good and plentiful. The dietary staff was very accommodating and concerned. Lee and Clare were the friendly faces that greeted me each day. And, of course, the lovely Fiona was always present in the cafe to offer a cup of coffee and a treat. Thank you to Avi for being so friendly and concerned. I am sure that I have forgotten to name every person who helped my husband, but I want to say thank you to all of you!

Physical and Occupational therapy was great, I had June and Stacy, loved them both they taught me so much. Ellen in medical records was also very helpful, receptionists Claire, and Lee were also so sweet. I was not happy about the weekend staff, they were never around. The only real issue I had was the food, it was of poor quality and pretty horrible. But I made alot of friends, residents included... Ellen

I had a family member who stayed here for two weeks following a hip replacement. During that time they developed a stage 4 bedsore that never healed up until they passed a year later. Whether the problem is the facility being understaffed, neglectful, or spread too thin, my main point is that you cannot leave anyone you care about here with peace of mind. We were there every day in shifts because we had multiple family members take turns since we all work and it was always a struggle to get a staff member in the room to help the patient stand up. For a bed sore to form that quickly, they probably didn't get to stand up at all aside from the times we flagged staff down. I wouldn't recommend anyone to have a loved one stay here unless they can have someone there with them 24/7 and make sure they get attended to.

The aides and nurses have no urgency to get anything done. I told them that my dad was having a fever, in pain, and not looking well. They assured me that he was fine. The nurse on 2N, Andrea, even said he ate an entire meal right before I got there! Meanwhile, my dad could not even swallow a sip of water. We are very present and have been very active in his medical recovery. They were still negligent knowing that we are always there. This place is inadequate at best. The social worker, Jill, is great. Very helpful.
